From a Bond/McGuyver standpoint, I'd go wired....the cord turns the mouse into a handy weapon for flailing or garroting....and if it's long enough, maybe rapelling to escape.

MS wireless laser 6000. Had 2 weeks got it at Staples $29.99 on sale. Best I ever had. Has great precision for light CAD work and battery life seems to be good.

Corded. Every wireless mouse (and keyboard) I've ever bought has stopped functioning within 10 days of purchase.

No, no, and no ! I attest ! I have nothing but praise for my $24 dollar Logitech cordless mini optical mouse! I got it for $23.99 from Amazon.com. Its ergonomics are perfect for a portable mouse, hand fits just right on it. Battery life is excellent. It has a battery LED on the mouse itself. I've had it since New Years and have yet to change to the battery. Yes, I do no use it constantly, just for FPSers and on tables (uncommon for me). I have the scroll wheel programed to automatically go back/forward in webpages when I bump the trackwheel left or right, which I think is pretty cool. Build quality doesn't skimp either, the regular, excellent Logitech quality is mantained throughout.

Your laptop is wireless, so why shouldn't your mouse be?

I owned (and loved!) my logitech MX700 had pretty good battery life ( lasted about a year) but it wasn't completely wireless it had to plug in via usb. The new G7 is cool to but I hated the looks and cost and am at my desk mostly anyway so I bought the G5.

Now for travelling I am considering a V400.

I use a logitech wireless mini mouse. I got it off ebay for $20 shipped. Some people say they don't like wireless because the cost of the batteries. I use rechargeable batteries. They cost like $2 each per AA or AAA and work great! I would strongly recommend people to get a charge and some rechargeable batteries, and you will save a lot of $.

Has anyone had any experience with logitech LX7, i am looking to use it both on the home and on the road, but at home more often. I am also looking to use the mouse for light gaming... Day of Defeat: Source, and Command and Conquer.

It looks as if i could get the mouse for 40USD out the door. how does the 1100DPI compare to other mouse? right now i have been using a Microsoft Optical Basic for years with out a hiccup. Would 1100DPI be good enough to game? BTW: i have tried my roomate's Razer Diamondback, (or something) if i remember correctly it has DPI of 1600? how would the two compare, in sensible terms, in everyday usage.

I am not looking to spend more than 50USD, but i am open to suggestions, as well as newer mouse in the pipeline.

    Thanks,
    BankBen

Corded. Dont have to worry about battery. Also, if you are sitting next to someone with another cordless mouse (in college), your mouse will go crazy.

    Its a no brainer.

Hmm, I thought I had weighed in on this already. Guess not.

I use a wireless mouse (Logitech MX610) with my laptop, and I absolutely love having the freedom that a 2.4GHz wireless mouse gives me, especially since I use my laptop in a lot of different locations and shove all over my rather expansive desk when I'm working. I like that I'm not tethered down, and being able to wave my mouse around without tugging it out of the computer.

I use a corded mouse (Razer Diamondback Plasma LE) with my desktop, and I absolutely love it, too. It's so insanely light and responsive, has an almost perfect shape, and the buttons have fantastic tactile feedback. Using it is practically a pleasure. Since my desktop doesn't go anywhere, I don't mind being tethered to it, although the cords do sometimes get tangled.

Both mice are fantastic. I just need to figure out how to mash the two of them together...

representing kensington! the laser wireless which is probably 8/10. i got it for 25 at best buy (they've been having sales on it on and off for the last 3 months or so) the tracking is good, though nothing can beat a corded mouse i suppose, but i don't feel the difference when gaming since if im losing its more than likely my fault. the great thing about the kensington though is the ribbed rubber siding which i find to be very comfortable. oh and the wheel suc ks i need to make a warranty claim on it or something because the micromovements of the wheel are just pathetic and spotty. that aside, perfect with 1.5 month battery life which i use rechargable for anyway so no worries.

I just bought a MS  Laser 6000 DeskTop keyboard & mouse. Thought I was bidding on a notebook version :( , but wth. Works fine on both DT & NB. For use @ local library where I WiFi surf/research (aka now)
Can use the mouse on my pantleg w/o problem, NO NEED for pad! Synaptics touch pad still usable, but why bother?
I like the magnifier button (getting older, small print harder 2 C). Control is great. NO lag if recvr set proper distance.

Are there any slightly smaller DT type kybd / mouse combos y'all found OK [aka at least until they bring out something lighter] ? TY d8d

with all the stuff about mouses could anyone explain what the difference is between optical and lazer? Is lazer really that much better? I could understand right away how much better optical is than a wheel mouse with all that cleaning and gunk, but I just don't know about lazer since my optical mouse seems to be pretty good at pointing to things.

I'm using a Logitech MX Duo(Elite & MX700) wireless keyboard/mouse set for my desktop. The battery on my keyboard has never been replaced and been using it for more than one year. The battery on the mouse is rechargable and it's charged while I'm asleep. Great combo.

I'm also using a Logitech V200 wireless mouse for my laptop. Great little mouse but wish the receive fits inside the unit instead of sticking out. Overall, it's a good mouse.

I own a Logitech G7 wireless mouse and its awesome so far.
Using it on my desktop at this time as my laptop is still not due to be shipped until June.
Also ordered a Razer Copperhead to try it out and decide which goes to my desktop and which goes to the laptop :D

So far if you are worried about buying batteries or batteries dying on you, the G7 is awesome for those worries.
It comes with 2 rechargeable batteries that you can switch on the FLY!
(So you have 1 in your mouse while the other is charging in its base station)
ALL the buttons are customizable and you can even switch the DPI settings on the fly as well!
The USB base for it that doubles as its charger has 2 charge settings.
Normal that charges the battery to full in 10hrs and the Burst mode that can charge a battery within 2 hours!

Each battery lasts me around 2 days per charge but not worried about it when I can charge it on the fly :D

This may be coming a little late now, but the advantages that laser mice seem to offer are a higher maximum resolution - currently, the most sensitive laser mice run at 2000 dpi, while the most sensitive optical mice run at 1600 dpi - and better tracking than optical mice on difficult surfaces. Personally, I haven't really noticed a difference between my optical and laser mice when it comes to tracking (except that lined paper really screws up my MX610), but I haven't been too tough on any of them.

    Hopefully that helps a little.

    OK.
I just opened the box for my newly acquired Razer Copperhead.
Touched it and put it on my hand to see how it feels.

Initial impression: I prefer my Logitech G7.
The Copperhead just doesn't feel right on my hand.
The side buttons also feels awkward for me :(

So now I am going to get an RMA from Newegg to replace my Razer Copperhead - Tempest Blue for a 2nd Logitech G7.
So I can have a G7 for both my desktop and laptop.

For gaming, buy a wired laser mouse - I find that if you buy a wireless laser or optical and do a lot of gaming, you'll need to recharge the batteries every fortnight or so. Otherwise though, I prefer to use a wireless optical - best of battery life, style and freedom.

Corded, but with the provision that it's a trackball not a mouse.

If it's a mouse, well not sure I'd remember how to use one. I hate those damn things... scampering all over the house when your not awake...

Go with a Kensington USB Pocketmouse. Theyre awesome and with the software (free from website) you can assign clicks, drags, scrolls and pop-up menus with it.
    PMZ
PS--I've had mine for at least a year or two and it has had no problems and it hasnt broken.
PPS--I bought mine because my notebook's touchpad always seems to go screwy after a while, and even though my new NB has a trackpoint, I still would prefer to use a mouse or touchpad. Anyone else with the same problem?
PPPS--How do you get used to using a trackpoint anyway? Mine is so sluggish it would drive me nuts.

Corded here as well. Just use those *new* models w/ super-thin wire if you fear it getting in the way. My choice is the MS Laser Mouse 6000, for gaming.

edit- What is the ultimate corded, laser mouse for a heavy gamer, graphics/CAD designer, web surfing for as low a price as possible?

    Corded for me as well.

Even those 1600dpi cordless laser mice is of no match to the cheapo US$20 corded optical mouse. I am one of those suckers who bought a US$130 Logitech cordless laser mouse. For casual use, it's good the laser mouse is convenient. For games, it is still not up to par - occasional lag and stuttering.

I have the MX1000 for my desktop and am planning on getting a g7 for my laptop, and I have to go with wireless all the way. I have not noticed any lag or stuttering while gaming with my mx1000, and the g7 is supposed to be even better than the mx1000. I can't deal with cords anymore, they always get caught on something or stop your movement at the most inopportune times, and the limited area you can use them with sucks. The batteries aren't a huge problem, as the mx1000 batteries last a good week of pretty decent use without a recharge, and all you have to do to recharge it is toss it in the base station every night. The g7 actually comes with an extra battery, so one is always charging, and you never have to worry about the battery dieing.

I don't see how peoples cords get stuck, in my 10+ years of gaming I've never had my mouse cord actually get caught on something. If you ask me, people need to learn how to properly manage there cables and keep there gaming area free of clutter. If you've got 5" of space on your desk and try to game, then yes you are going to have your cable get snagged...take a few seconds to clean up people! lol

My cable gets snagged because I don't have a ton of desk space to have excess cord up there on the desktop. It usually falls down behind my desk, and then gets caught on the edge of the desk when I try and pull this mouse down. It wasn't a huge problem, just an annoyance every now and then. Also, the way my system is set up I don't usually get a ton of slack from where my system is to where my mousepad is. So I used to have that problem as well. But like you, I don't see how people complain about stuttering and lag from cordless mice, as I have never seen it once in the last 4 years I've had cordless mice.

Just about every cordless mouse I've used has had lag, or just doesn't respond sometimes. But unlike most people I cannot go and spend over $50...for a mouse. Seems ridiculous, people spending $70 or $80 on an accessory as simple as a mouse. Have had my $15 optical mouse for about 4-5 years as well, would prefer it over and high priced cordless mouse. I also use a $0.99 cent mouse pad, best one I've ever used lol.

You don't even have to spend that much to get a decent cordless mouse without lag anymore, logitech has some with the 2.4 ghz wireless for around 30-40 bucks. But yeah, before that if you wanted a decent one you had to spend 60-80 bucks. I had no problem spending a bit more on a mouse that was comfortable and functional, because you use it every time you use the computer.

And i hear you on the mousepad thing, I don't understand people shelling out 50 bucks for a mousepad, when they aren't even needed with optical and laser mice.
