I want to get a controller for my PC games, but I dont know which one I should get. So far I've settled on the Xbox 360 controller, which works with the PC. However, are all PC games compatible with gamepads/controllers, and specifically the 360 controller? Also, is it the best controller? Also, will it be a futureproof controller, as in will newer games support it? How is its build quality?

    Any comments are appreciated thanks

    btw i have 64bit vista

and no I dont have an xbox360 but for some reason I really like the idea of playing games on my PC with a game controller. I'm just worried that other controllers might not work with games or they might have bad build qualities

I don't know if it's been supported in 64 bit yet, but I know for sure it'll work in 32 bit.

If you have an xbox 360, then this deal is very worth it.

You're getting into the age-old debate as to whether WASD beats a standard console controller. Of the current generation systems, I would have to say that the 360 has the best controller out there in terms of comfort and ease of use/play. Any game that features support for a gamepad would work with it, it's nothing special in that respect.

I recommend the Logitech Cordless Rumblepad as another alternative. It costs less than the 360 controller and has stellar battery life ( I have only changed my batteries once a year in the two years i have owned it.) Its very rugged and well built and it gets excellent range, if that was ever an issue. It also does look a bit like a PlayStation Controller.

no I'm not trying to get into that debate. All I'm asking is if getting a controller is worth it, as in whether future games will utilize it and such.

i'm talking about the wired ones

and btw, i got one already. Gamestop didn't have any official Microsoft xbox360 wired controllers anymore. THe only one left was the "Gamestop brand" one, which is made by Mad Catz and officially licensed by Microsoft. It ended up being cheaper ($25) than a regular xbox360 controller.

Does anyone know if Mad Catz makes good controllers?

I would say go for the wired 360 controller, as it is natively supported in all new games, so you don't need to program buttons, and make profiles, etc.

But, I recommend that you buy the normal 360 version of the controller, because it is cheaper than the special pc version.
The only difference is that the pc edition has a driver disk, but the drivers can be downloaded from the microsoft site.

I am not talking b/s :p, I actually bought the 360 one and d/led the drivers and it works, just install the drivers before you plug in the controller the first time.
I love this controller, once you get used it there IS NO OTHER :D :D :D

Hope this helps, all the best

    He's right :p
ALSO, be sure NOT to get the wired xbox360 version though because that one, DOESN'T work.

As build quality, it's a very good controller, especially ergonomically.
To be perfectly honest though, the D-pad is bugged a bit. Apart from that, the controller is perfect. But they already might have fixed that issue, or not?

lol he said to buy the wired one and u said he's right but you said not to get it lol

the only one at gamestop was a Gamestop brand 360 controller that was officially licensed by microsoft. It's made by madcatz

does mad catz make good controllers?

I've always found the madcatz versions of the controllers to be inferior in terms of how they felt and how they played. I'd go for the actual 360 controller.

If you buy the wired 360 controller, it'll work on both an Xbox and PC. The difference between the two "versions" is the packaging and that the PC version comes with a CD with software that can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=Gaming

If you buy a wireless controller for the 360, then you'll need a receiver for the PC to use it on the computer: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b

I picked up a wired Xbox360 controller for 15 dollars at radioshack (damaged packaging, so it was on sale). Works fine on my PC, Vista X64 as well. Only use it for emulators though, FPS is meant to be played KB/M

nice. I wanted an official one, but Gamestop didn't have any as Microsoft stopped making them. Plus, I had to use my gamestop gift card.

Maybe I could buy it from online?

    You stupid ****

First you say he's right, when I said get a wired 360 controller then you contradict yourself by saying be sure NOT to get the wired xbox360 version though because that one, DOESN'T work.

    W.T.F.????? Get your facts straight

It works perfectly fine on the pc, after you get the drivers for it from the microsoft website, and it's cheaper then the pc edition beacuse it doesn't have a CD containing THE SAME DRIVERS AVAILABLE FOR FREE FROM THE SITE!!

    Why not???

Amazon sells the wired 360 controller, and to get the drivers for it, go here
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=Gaming, and choose controller, wired 360 controller, followed by your OS and language
You might also get a cheaper price from buying online

    Regards

If he did mean that, then there was no point in his post as he was just repeating what I said, or he was too lazy to read it properly (unlike you ;))
I'm not getting hostile, it's just that every once in a while these things really pi** me off

    And if you think I'm a stupid ****, I don't give a $h**, whatever makes you happy
I;m not trying to be hostile I just got a little angry

(lost it, but I'm in control again :p)

Nah, I even deleted my post because I went back and read his and then agreed, that his post doesn't really make any sense. What I posted initially was based on my interpretation of his post when I read it earlier.

Still, no need to be hostile, just correct them and move on (though I understand... I get that way myself sometimes... >_>)

    Thank you

I thought it was strange that my inbox showed your message but no matter how many times I refreshed this thread it didn't show up :p

I know I apologize for being hostile, I don't know what came over me, I'm usually a calm person, if you see my other forum posts, don't know what came over me (lack of sleep), but I'm good now ;)

PS - After some time have the analog sticks on your gotten a little looser.
By this i mean that they move slightly even when in the centre????

Sorry to go a little off-topic but has anyone used any of the splitfish controllers made for the Playstation series? I have a PS3 and was thinking about trying it out. I would buy it right now if it can be confirmed that it works on the PC as well since it comes in either USB 2.0 or Bluetooth, which my Sager NP5793 has both.

It seems to have the best of both worlds by having a stick for movement and a mouse for precise aiming.

Oh and BTW I used my X360 wireless controller on BF2 and had so many problems getting it work correctly. Is there a software you have to download before using it?

I bought a generic USB dual shock controller on ebay and I have to say that I am very disappointed. Although it works on some games, the button layouts a skewed. Button 1 is seen as button 4 on Assassins Creed. It's very annoying when the games is telling you to press button 4 when ur suppose to hit button 1.

The button layout on the screens also don't match. This can be fixed via Options..

But there is no way I can fix the other issue. I should have gotton a 360 controller.

Also, dual shock doesn't come on when playing Grid.

I was just wondering, I'm good as well, but a friend was complaining he has this issue
