I am currently on the market for an external hard drive since my old have become unreliable (files are becoming corrupted). I want to buy a an external hard drive that will let me change the actually 3.5" hard drive so that in case I run out of space I can just buy another 3.5".

what do you guy think of seagate freeAgent GoFlex desk?. Cnet has given it pretty good review. Are there better options out there.

    thanks.

After 2 seagate 500gb failing and losing data trashed the other 3 not trusting any data on them.
Seagate producing a line of drives that all fail in the firmware bug even after they had been updated ...
Went back to WD green for storage and blue/black for inside.

    Using 2x 2Tb and 5x 1.5Tb 3.5'' -s in external docks, and got 2x 2TB WD mybook elites I like the eink labeling :p

Every data I got is saved on 2 or the most important on 3 hdd-s. Backups keep in a fire/waterproof safe.

Got vantec and thermaltake, a docks dual shot vantec died.

Unless you already own an extra 3.5" hard drive, there is no benefit to building your own external USB drive kit. Just buy a pre-made kit.

Just make sure whatever you buy has good reviews, and a good warranty. Anecdotal stories from individuals about reliability are useless... "Oh, don't buy Seagate / Maxtor / Hitachi / Western Digital... they are crap, because this one time I had a drive that failed..." You will hear those stories about any product, brand, and model of anything that is ever sold. Things break. It is a fact of life. What is important is the warranty and support you get when the product breaks.

there are a few NAS units that support direct USB interface but for me I use a NAS unit with 4 drives and just wait the extra time to move files.

Yes, there are. Personally, I have a lot of great experience with Vantec USB enclosures, so I have exclusively bought them over the past few years. You can find a list of the Vantec Nexstar (2-drive) enclosures here:
Welcome to Vantec ? Leading Brand of Storage, Thermal, and Mobile Accessories! -

The difference between the models are the multi-drive support options (JBOD, RAID-0, and/or RAID-1), and the connection options (USB, Firewire, and/or eSATA). I personally own the NST-400MX-SR, for its eSATA support and RAID-1 mirroring support.
