mine will be going back tomm. very poor build quality imo. some of the rubber design on the front was not even stitched to the bag, they show it with 2 rubber feet in the web site there is only one. the padding is very very thin around the laptop area. so yeah its going back.

so looking for suggestions once again. anyone have anything to recc that will fit the 5791 for around or under 100$ ... please no bags that are like 250$ i just cant swing that right now. maybe in a month or two but not right now. thanks for any help

Sorry to semi-necro this thread again - just my $.02.

I purchased the Slappa after you posted the very affordable link via buy.com, zfactor.

    My comments here are twofold:
-First, I'm a new owner of a Dell 1730, a very heavy laptop in and of itself.
-Second, I also travel with a Dell 620, a work laptop.
-Third, I always have about 300pages of documents I carry with me for work.

Add to that I travel (via airports) about 50% of the time. I've had this bag for about two weeks, and I haven't experienced one problem with it (YMMV). My only dislikes about the bag are that the base of it isn't designed in a way that it will stand up by itself (or even pretend to). It's designed in such a way where it remains very slender at the bottom.

The shoulders are quite comfortable, however they don't have the elastic at the top of them to absorb shock like some do (Swiss, etc). However, I almost prefer this, as the bag isn't constantly bouncing and sliding up/down my back.

Happy with the purchase so far. The internal pocket for the laptop barely accomodates the 1730 - probably one of the largest 17" laptops there is out there - but it works. The overall backpack is great in side, and accomodates both laptops, both power bricks (the 1730s is absolutely huge), and several books/proposals.

No quality issues with mine, but again, YMMV. Best of luck Z - lemme know what you do incase mine suddenly goes south :)

Check out the Mobile Edge SecurePack and Premium Backpack. Both hold 17" laptops perfectly. In fact Mobile Edge is currently offering 10% off AND free shipping for all NB Review readers. You can also find reviews of both of these bags at MobileEdgeBlog.com. By the way both of these bags are well under $100 and come with Lifetime Warranty.

Hope all this info helps you out.

    Cheers,

Just wondering what you're basing your decision on to discart it?
There's 1 negative feedback, but also 2 peeps (1 being me :p) who like it.
I see no basis for your rejection.

(Ow, no I'm not on slappa's paylist :p ... just wondering why people make certain decisions :D)

what everyone needs top be careful of with the slappa is there are 2 VERSIONS out there shipping. the 19b and the one i got the 19. many web sites are advertising the 19b but shipping out the 19. the 19 imo was way sub par construction. some of the rubber mesh on the front was not even stitched on it was literally hanging off the bag. no holes even ever made in it for thread. also it only has one foot on the bottom not two. it has about half the padding in it and the back strap is only stiched on at the top.. the 19b is stitched using a much larger section of material. the 19 is the older wet suite like material not the buckskin as adevartised.

when i recieved the old one which supposedly "is no longer shipping" i called slappa they said there is simply nothing we can do for you. the lady also told me they only warr bags bought from them directly just fyi not surre how true that was but she didnt basically even want to talk to me about it i had to pry the info i posted above out of her as it was..

Well, if you see a deal that's sounds good to be true, it usually is.
In this case, apparently, the warranty isn't included. So for warranty, you'll have to deal with your reseller.
I purchased mine directly from slappa.co.uk, so I should't have any problems ;)

Weren't you the one who wanted me to get a slappa bag lol? I love mine so far. It's durable, and looks cool in all black. Not too heavy, and can hold a ton of notebooks. My only complaint is that the inside is some kind of fabric and seems kind of easy to break...compared to my older bag which had thicker stronger fabric

yep.. the one from buy.com was the 19. but i have afreind who ordered one and he got the correct 19b. you can tell which it is by a lot. on the bottom there should be 2 rubber "feet" if you got the 19b if there is one you have the 19. if the material is like wet suite material and not a suede like material you got the 19 model. these are the first 2 things you will notice to tell which you got

i have my own account now with slappa. im awaiting the buy in amount and i will let you guys know when i get any price info. if i cna help out i will. i can say they sent me a 19b to play with and ITS MUCH MUCH NICER THAN THE 19 MODEL.

I got the suede material, so I guess I have the 19.
However, I still have no complaints :)
When I remember, I'll try to count the feet when I get home :)

then I don't need to count feet :p

When there are just a few responses and one is very negative, I want to be very cautious since I will be buying on line without being able to handle the product myself. Since it's for an expensive laptop that I carry back and forth overseas every month I want to be overcautious.

If the tone of the comments turns more positive, I'll certainly reconsider.

Hehe, I can understand that :)
I returned my first backpack as well (was from Swiss Gear or something)

However, the one with the very negative comments is saying himself that the revised model is much better. So maybe you can go for that one after all :)

That's what I was thinking. It is compelling to hear zfactors positive comments about the 19b after the strong negative comments about the 19.

I'm loving the 19b then.... Why wouldn't buy.com take responsibility for sending you the wrong order though? If we all got the 19b version?

    That's a tad more (about $1 :p) than what I paid.
Difference is that, ordering in the UK, you pay a VAT of 19%.
So actually, I think I got it at a rather good price :)

Hello to everyone! I was kinda worried when I saw the title of the thread, since I too was about to order a Slappa bag. I thought than both the spider and the matrix were the same except for the front design. If it helps, I found a couple of sites with pictures and reviews:

    http://laptoplogic.com/reviews/detail.php?id=168&part=full&page=1
    http://www.atpm.com/13.10/velocity-matrix.shtml

Can those of you who already have the bag confirm anything about these reviews? Is there any great difference between spider and matrix?

    Guys

I am the President of SLAPPA and I'll try to clarify the statements/questions in this post.

    1) Yes there are 2 versions of the SPYDER bag....there is the original version (the 19, that uses neoprene material as the base material) and the revised version (the 19b, that uses our BuckBlast material as the base material)

    2) We did stress test both versions of the bag to 80lbs, but found that the original version (the neoprene bag) had a flaw, in that the stitching where the strap meets the main bag would tear when "tugged". When we do the stress test it is not a “tugging” test but a “dead weight” test. We made a number of revisions to the bag to fix this, which resulted in the new 19b version of the SPYDER which withstands 80 lbs. of dead weight and 50 lbs. of “tugging” weight. The revisions we made are: (a) changing the base material to BuckBlast (which is a synthetic suede-like material) (b) we changed the strap design to a "harness" design which gave more room to add more stitching (c) we added a ballistic nylon cross strip that we stitch the strap to. The Matrix is a new model that incorporates all these changes, and was NEVER made using the neoprene material.
    3) Since we have launched this new SPYDER 19b version (along with the Matrix backpack) we have not heard back from 1 customer with regards to a failing of the strap..

    4) We have offered (and of course still offer) EVERY customer who has purchased the original 19 version of the Spyder at SLAPPA.com, the choice to "swap out" the original 19 version for the new 19b version. If any of you guys have purchased a 19 from SLAPPA.com, and want to swap it out we will do so. We as a company take customer service VERY SERIOUSLY. If you have purchased a product from us at SLAPPA.com from an authorized SLAPPA reseller we will do everything possible to make you happy. If you have purchase a product from an unauthorized reseller, we will help you out, but you are going to pay a certain amount for the replacement.
    4) Unfortunately, there are a few companies that still sell the original version of the SPYDER, and they are NOT authorized SLAPPA dealers. If you have questions on where you can buy "legit" SLAPPA gear, just send me a mail.

I'm sorry that there was an issue with the original bag, and I’m happy that most of you came to us so we could help. Please understand, we really do strive to make the absolute best products out there and if you EVER have a problem we want you to let us know so we can help you and fix whatever is wrong.

I do appreciate you guys taking the time to let us know your thoughts, and appreciate your supporting us. We're a small company with goals that are set quite high, but we believe are achievable as long as we keep listening to you all.

    Thanks

    Dominick
