IIRC, the difference for me was less than $5. When I placed the order, I was just thinking of avoiding the additional 3% international charge from Paypal, which I hate/hated paying. I should have probably looked closer, but I the stress just isn't worth it for the $10 (or less) difference. I still have no buyer's remorse.

I pulled the trigger on the 3820TG because of the dual HSF cooling. From what has been posted about the 3830TG, this design has been scrapped making this product line less dissimilar from other powerful models with insufficient cooling like the HP Envys and AW m1*x's. That's why I moved to get the 3820TG before it went OOS everywhere.

Oh, yeah that sounds like you're missing something for sure. Sorry, thought that would have fixed it, but it seems something is actually wrong with the space bar lol.

I'm now a proud owner of a new 3820tg-6829! Thanks for all the help in this and other threads. Hopefully this will be my second successful NBR encouraged purchase :D

It takes a damn long time to install all these useless things though! Like windows live essentials and others. I will do a clean install of w7pro, but for now i'm eager to take my new baby for a spin :D

Welcome to the club! I'm at this very moment burning in the IC7 that I've just applied. The temps dropped 10C right of the bat! I must say it's very well built, from what I've seen from the inside of it. :D

EDIT: Got a new best CPU-Z validation! (3.86GHz!!)

    EDIT 2: Got me a new 3Dmark 06 high:

    Good to know :)

Has anyone come across some strange sound skipping! basically i'm playing some music while uninstalling a bunch of stuff, and every once in a while theres a random skip with buzzing noise.

Will a driver update help this?

Yes, I have had some issues with that. It is some kind of static sound that comes from the left speaker from time to time. I figured it was some kind of interference from something near by. It has been quiet for a couple of days, so I did forget about it. Where is the sound coming from in your setup?

I have external speakers setup, but I haven't noticed the sound favouring one side. Let me see if I can isolate it next time it happens. Seems to be whenever the hard drive is under load for some reason... :S.

New to this site, and I have a question. I have a 3820tg-7945 I have noticed that when graphics are in switchable mode the ati 5470 card only runs at 300 mhz for both gpu and memory. When in discrete it runs at full 550 core and 800 memory. Is this normal? Is there away to get the card to run at full power in switchable mode?
Also when in discrete mode the card will cause bsod if I try to run wei assessment, at media decode assessment.
This is why I would like to get full power from the card in switchable mode.
Any thoughts or knowledge about this would be appreciated.

Nah, the 3.86GHz was a max for CPU-Z only. Max WPrime is a bit lower:

How many slots does the 3820tg have for memory?

SIW seems to say 4 - is that correct?

Erm download the final version (intel build 2281) and run the install.cmd from there. Do not install using that setup.exe, go back to the beta setup.exe and directly run it from there. No need for install.cmd anymore after running the stable version.

PS. Please don't quote the whole post, it's quite long :)

    Hi!
    Nice job Lennong!

I can see only CPU 2 threads, how did you disable hyperthreading and why?
will it give you a better max OC without it?
Is it better to disable hyperthreading for 3d gaming? I suppose it depends if the game is multithreaded.
I am really happy with mine! 22 x 160 (HT on + TB on), nice peace of harware!

Yes, I've turned it off becuase the benefit for using HT in gaming on a dual core is basically nothing today. There is an overhead related to administer the threads that some games actually suffers from. The extra heat and lower OC when on HT gives me a overall worse performance than when turning the HT off.

If you flash the modded BIOS with the unlocked INTEL menu you can disable HT, Turbo and the dedicated gfx for example. I think there is a link in the 3820TG mod thread. ;)

BTW, I'm home from uni due to eastern leave and will have a go again on the SPD editing of the RAM timings. If we can change the timings to something more forgiving I think 4GHz is within reach. Should be fun :)

Help! My 3820tg suddenly shutdown while watching online streaming and connected to a tv thru hdmi. When I checked the bottom of the laptop, it's hot to the touch. Temp in my room is around 20C when this happened. Did any of you experience this? What might have caused this?

Fans working? DL hardware monitor from CPUZ. Check temps. Streaming and driving the LG dispkay at 75 hz or better through the HDMI causes heat.

I have a 24" LG and it stresses my 3820TG to keep up. Let us know if it's heat.

Does the computer always reboot to ATI regardless of if its on battery or not?

Also, I've successfully remapped the programmable 'P' key using autohotkey. Its pretty crude right now, but I can switch graphics using the button :D

Did have a lot of time and even more beers yesterday. :D The result of my SPD modding of the RAM sticks were mixed. The chipset in this laptop do not support CAS9 timing at 1066MHz, it won't boot and it's nothing we can do about that. However, with the help of Thaiphoon burner we can reprogram the RAM to boot at CAS8 timings without much effort. Simply choose the PC-8500 G alternative in the editor and flash your sticks to the settings given with that alternative.

The result on my 2x2GB Samsung sticks were that I gained absolutely nothing in terms of OC, apparently they are maxed out already on CAS7. My guess is that anyone that has less stellar RAMs in their laptop could gain something by using these more relaxed timings.

I do also have a pair of Corsair 4GB sticks that OC'ed horribly on the standard SPD settings. Before I attacked them they could not cope with more than 1120MHz on CAS7 (140 BCLK). Once I flashed them with the PC-8500 G table I got a very healthy OC boost up to 1280MHz (160BCLK) on CAS8, which was more than I expected. Normally the heavier the density on RAM, the harder to OC. 1280MHz on 8GB is no easy feat! For anyone interested the 4GB sticks are named Corsair CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9. ;) They are cheap and once flashed with more relaxed timings will let you OC up to some 160BCLK or so. :D

I can hear the fans working. I downloaded hardware monitor and recreated the same scenario when the sudden shutdown happened (online streaming while connected to TV thru hdmi, utorrent on the background). 1st core had a max temp of 68C (ave: 60C-63C) while the 2nd core had a max temp of 61C (ave: 57C-59C). GPU had a max temp of 63C (ave: 61C-62C). HDD's temp is 39C-40C. Room temp is 20C. Are my temps too high?

This was the first time that the sudden shutdown happened since I had my laptop in June 2010. I don't know if this is relevant but last December I spilled beer on my keyboard (whole keyboard covered with beer but i was able to immediately remove the battery and turn the laptop upside down and wipe the beer off). I just let it dry and didn't do anything else about it. After that, I had been using my laptop on a daily basis and had no problems.

Those temps are fine. GPU max temp is 95 and anything under 85 is technically running cool. CPU max temp is 105 but typically 90 to 95 is as high as it usually will get.

I would not rule out beer damage yet. As I learned the hard way, the Acer does not like liquid in it. There could have been damage done initially that worsened over time, there could have been corrosion that is just catching up with the system. There is obviously no heat problem.

If it passes Memtest (as I think it will), looks Like RMA time. I would send it back under warranty.

Hey, so I just bought the 3820TG and I'm loving it but I have a driver issue:

Scrybe does not work properly, I have the latest synaptics driver (15.something) and the latest version of scrybe. When I turn the computer on, scrybe takes about 5 minutes to appear in my system tray but the multi-touch features still don't work.

Has anyone else had this issue? Alternatively, is there any other way to get 2-finger scrolling?

Right click the Synaptics icon, go to device settings, highlight Synaptics Touchpad v7.2 and select "settings", and configure it as you wish. However, can you verify that your touchpad is Synaptics and not Alps? Using the wrong driver can cause instability sometimes.

Yeah, confirmed that its Synaptics and not ALPS

    Imageshack - scrybe.jpg
    Synaptics v15.2.7 with Scrybe v1.6.4

In settings (which I have open), there doesn't seem to be any option to modify gestures.

Any further insight? Like which version of Synaptics and Scrybe do you have?

I think your touchpad is Alps because in Device Settings it would identify the device as "Synaptics Touchpad v7.2", and it would have a whole range of settings like the one shown here. Try downloading the Alps driver and see if two finger scrolls and zooms work. Unfortunately Scrybe is a Synaptics only application and is not compatible with Alps touchpads :(

Ah, so the entire touchpad is Alps :(
What a shame, the Alps driver (I tried) didn't come with 2 finger scrolling though.

Anyone know a way to get advanced gestures to work on the touchpad? Alps only comes with the basic pinch and zoom type things.

    That's strange because.....

I updated the Alps drivers (to v7.106.303.111) and I have two finger scrolling on my touchpad.

I just want to Mouse properties>>Advanced>>Advanced Feature Settings and selected the "Enable Pan Scroll" option.

See if that works for you!

    hi guys,
has someone tried to install a 1600 ddr3 RAM kit in our 3820tg??
i know that our system supports just 1066 RAM speed max, but if i install a 1600 cas 7, Will works at 1333 at cas 5 or 1066 cas 4 or cas won't be reduced??

Because of Intel's arbitrary limitation, if you use an i5 the RAM will remain at 1066, but cas depends on the memory. If you are lucky and use an i7, maybe you will be able to reach 1333 but afaik not 1600 because of motherboard limitations

that's because i wanna buy (a bargain) a 1333 cl7 hyper x kit from a friend, my original nanya ram is an 1333 cl9 kit that works as 1066 cl7 kit...
so a 1333 kit that works at cl7 maybe works at 1066 cas 5 too.. imho of course...
and maybe i'll have more overclock possibility with that kit (with fsb working at 166 fsb)... is it possible in your opinion?
