There's a plastic covering on top of the aluminium which has your exact specs and then below the white line is on the plate itself...I wish everything was printed on the plate and no plastic it looks much nicer...

Any one who has tried to play All Points Bulletin on a 3820TG ? If yes, which specs? :)

I'm considering buying this baby with i5-450m, HD5650, 4gb and then pump it up with a SSD.

If not, I would be grateful if someone could run either one of these for me:

    Can You Run It?

YouGamers - All Points Bulletin System Requirements

    and post the results :)

I've found the same 3820 US keyboard from Canadian sellers on eBay for US$30 with free shipping. Haven't ordered from them but I imagine it's similar stock.

Now if someone can find me a backlit one ... ;)

Whoa, wait a second, what's all this about aluminum plates? This spec list (see picture) isn't just a sticker?

Can this be removed for a clean look?

I have this problem and want to see if anyone else here have experienced this problem.

I was working on my paper on my laptop last night till 2am, and then I shut done my laptop.
Next morning I turn on my laptop but when I press the circle power on button, the laptop has no response at all. No light indicators. I have my laptop plugged in to the power outlet and with my battery out. So I check to make sure my AC adapter is properly plugged and I see a green light on my AC adapter so it was plugged.
So I tried to put my battery in and tried to run it from the battery only.
    And it still didn't work.

Is sending in my laptop to Acer my only hope?
    Thanks.

I wanted to to the Thaiphoon modding too, but wasn't brave enough to do it. All you need to modify is one byte, and the checksum bits of course. And maybe you need to use RWEverything to do the actual modding, as Thaiphoon wasn't Win7 / 64-bit compatible the last time I checked.

BTW, come over to the tweak thread.

Yes, had to make a dual boot with XP to get it to work. I managed to flash the module a few times with different timings but it did only clock worse... I finally took a chance of removing all except the 533MHz entry with loose timings, but then it got bricked. No big deal, I have 2x4GB modules coming in so I still have one 2GB module to play with. :D

    Sure, I'll pop over.

How much was your total and did they give free shipping? I might order one from NCIX but I'm watching out for upcoming competitors since so many laptops are being shown off right now.

I think only the 3830TG or alienware M11X R3 could compete with the 3820TG but we'll see.

Maybe but 14" laptops are too big and they ALWAYS have useless DVD drives.

I wish they would make DVD drives optional on all laptops and let us put giant fans or batteries in there instead.

wow pretty good price. I guess they don't do the free shipping outside of canada then lol.

Yeah no tax luckily. I'll have to change the keyboard though. How different are the keyboards anyway? Could I make it by just using the canadian keyboard?

Another question: Where's a good place to buy a 9 cell battery?

I think you can unbrick it by the sleep trick. Boot from a working RAM, put the computer to sleep, swap them, resume it and flash back the original timings.

the bilingual keyboard is actually driving me pretty crazy. I play fps games so the small/short left is pretty irritating. i'm still in my 7 day satisfaction guaranteed and i gotta admit i'm contemplating on sending it back. but its more personal preferance cause i'm so used to my 15inch asus m50sv-a1. i may end up sending it back and wait for the sager np8150 (hopefully they can configure the 6970M on it).

I have a question... Haven't really noticed it before now, and I don't know if it is normal... But my 3820tg can't play youtube video in higher res. that 360p on the intel gfx, no problems with the hd5650. Is this normal or should it be possible to play higher res. video online??

I have a question are the video drivers stable on this machine?

If I understand it right, when you mod the bios you can install the regular intel + regular ATI drivers and it will use them depending on which one is enabled.

Or if you leave the machine stock you are forced to use Acer drivers for video switching?

    Yes.

You have to install first the Acer to enable the switch option and than you can upgrade to the newest AMD one but not Intel one.

Don't worry about the basic things, it is all inside the hardware.

The time for apps like this are gone for years. Or the user who use software like this doesn't see that the time changes..

The Intel driver in the Acer package is old and full of bugs. I always had problems watching Youtube videos on Intel. And SP1 installation is not enabled because of the bugs in the old Intel drivers.

Thats the biggest reason I started using BIOS switching. Now I have the newest official Intel driver with no Youtube problem and SP1 installed.

I get my replacement 3820TG back tomorrow!!! It's been over a month of waiting, I think. Anyways, I've been out of the loop this entire time. Great idea on a part 2. Already bookmarked a lot of the links in the OP for when I do my fresh install again.

EDIT: That 3820Tray, is it relatively new? I recall trying to use a version of it previously and it didn't work.

    you can use this driver:
    Grafiktreiber (ATI/AMD) & Hybrid (ATI/AMD + Intel) & Realtek Audio Treiber + HDMI >>> Download + Anleitung - Acer-Userforum.de

this driver are modded ones and you can install it without switching graphics in bios and without install anything before. just like the acer orginal ones !!!!

use the hybrid version for switchable (hybrid=switchable)

this driver contains the newest ATI 11.2 AND Intel drivers !!

this link lead you to the "stable" version. in this forum you find a sticky thread to a "beta" version, too.
    Grafiktreiber (ATI/AMD) & Hybrid (ATI/AMD + Intel) & Realtek Audio Treiber + HDMI >>> Beta Tests - Acer-Userforum.de
this contains a bit newer intel drivers. (2321 instead of 2281)

but the "stable" version works really good !!!

    have fun

The backlight turns back on, when I switch graphics back to original which it was during windows started.. sorry about bad english...

    Hi guys,

I'm planning on getting a Aspire TimelineX 5820TG and mildly overclock the CPU via SetFSB/ClockGen.

    My question is:

What kind of memory brand and speed (1066/1333) are you guys using to achieve higher FSB?

Here is the specific model I'm going to get:

Acer AS5820TG-6406, Notebook - Intel Core i5-480M 2.66GHz, 15.6" LCD, 6GB RAM, 640GB HDD, AMD Radeon HD 6550 1GB, DVD-RW, Wireless BGN, Bluetooth, HDMI, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium | Canada Computers

    CPU is i5-480m 2.66Ghz (2.93GHz Turbo)
    Multiplier is 20, so 133 FSB x 20 = 2.66Ghz
6GB Ram (Most likely generic Samsung DDR3-1066)

    I want to achieve a 150 FSB x 20 = 3Ghz (3.3Ghz Turbo) O/C

Would DDR3-1066 be sufficient for 150 FSB, if so what brand?

Or do I need DDR3-1333, please recommend brand (Kingston/Corsair, etc)

    Thanks,

It does not really matter since Core i5s only support up to 1066MHz anyway. 1333MHz RAM is downclocked to 1066MHz when installed along with an i5 or below processor. Intel's arbitrary limitation.

Sorry I should have stated that I already know all i5 non-Sandy only supports 1066 and 1333 would be downclocked but that still does not answer my question if 1333 would help with overclocking FSB since it's 1333 native and going to be run at 1066 + OC FSB.

I suspect if I buy 1333Mhz Cas 9 say Kingston ValueRam that it would be run at 1066Mhz Cas 7 on my i5 but does it help when I raise the FSB to 150 for 3Ghz CPU overclock and 1200Mhz Ram respective?

AFAIK (correct me if im wrong) the RAM can only run at 1066 max no matter how much you overclock. A higher-frequency RAM module should help, but I have no firsthand experience, you have to ask Bronsky/Hendrickson :)

I raised this point in an earlier thread and have since done some reading.
It has been stated before that the HD6550m is actually an overvolted and overclocked HD5650m.
Now from what I have read, in order to overvolt the HD5650m to the same level as the 6550, the VBIOS must be modified. This would be fine except that no one has been able to successfully extract the VBIOS of an HD5650m on ANY notebook so far.
It is believed that this is because the VBIOS is actually packaged with the BIOS.
I am slightly sceptical about this as one would assume since the same bios is used to update all 3820TG models including those with a 6550m that the GFX card would be automatically upgraded. (there may be something in the BIOS update that sets each model differently.)

What I have deduced from all of this is we need someone to overvolt the GPU in the regular BIOS in order to see 6550m performance. I'm unsure whether anyone else is interested but I know I am!
Anyone out there savvy with the Phoenix BIOS?
