You could try at step 3 again, since this is the more 'complete' way to stack the drivers. If it doesn't work, then install Catalyst 11.8 instead. Alternatively, you could wait for Catalyst 11.10, which will be released on 31st October :D

    Hello there!
Been reading these forums for several years now, and i must say that you guys are awesome at solving pretty much everything! So thanks for that :)

Right now i need some help of my own that i really cant find in the 600+ pages i have read :/.

Im currently have the choice of buying two different specced 3820tg, and would like to know what you guys think.

Theses are the different spec and prices:
    Comp nr1, Core i5 480M, 750 GB, AMD Radeon HD6550M. Price: around 990 $
    Comp nr2, Core i5 450M, 320 GB, AMD Radeon HD5650M. Price: around 706 $

If you have any thougts, please explain them aswell. :)
Ex; How high can you clock this vs that and so on (if you know ofc)

Gonna use the computer for school - writing + playing Diablo 3, Skyrim and games like those.

Thanks in advance for your time!

    /Vileplume :p

That is a tough call. $200 more is a lot for the small performance increase in the models. You will see about 1000 marks more in 3dm06 from the HD 6550. Both drives are 5400 rpm and should be replaced with a faster drive.

Yeah its quite a big difference tbh. The thing is that on notebookreview the 6550 actually outperforms gt 540m in 3dmark 11 gpu test for some reason: 993 vs 888 score. I thougt that that may be welcoming since the 3dmark 11 is more accurate with new games like Skyrim and Diablo3?

10% GPU increase for 20% more $. Plus, if you run GPU overclocked like 99.999999999% of 3820TG owners the difference is even smaller. The real difference between the 2 in-game is a few frames.

Oh, yeah you got a point there :). I could just buy like 3 year extra warranty + a decent gamingmouse for those extra $ when you put it that way haha.

    --------------------

    OH before i forget it:
I cant find any info about game performance decrease when OCing the CPU, and if it still persists?
Is the any chance to solve that problem or should I just stay away from OCing the CPU when playing, and only focusing on pushing the GPU as far as possible? :)

Hey guys, I've been browsing Acer drivers site for any notebook that has Radeon 5650 to see if Acer hasn't released some new ATI drivers with updated Intel driver. This is what I've found under TravelMate 6594G:

VGA AMD VGA Driver 8.840.7.3000 218.4 MB 2011/10/13

By date, it seems to be newer than the one I found last time under 4820tg. The thing is, 6594G has got Core i7 so I'm not sure if it sports switchable graphics like my/our good old 3820tg so it all comes down to whether that driver is likely have the Intel driver as well, or just a standalone 5650 catalyst?

@maikvalberg no that is not dual channel. Dual channel only works when memory size and frequency are the same.

@sumdumguy It has an i7-640M which has Intel HD Graphics, but AFAIK it does not have switchable graphics, might be wrong on that. So I wouldn't advise (for now) to use that driver.

Hmm 8.840.7 seems to be released somewhere between Catalyst 11.3-11.5 since it does not correspond to any driver I know of with that driver version. A cursory checking of the files indicates that it should work with our 3820TG, 4820TG-only be damned, although I don't have my 3820TG with me at the moment so I can't check if the hardware IDs match. If they don't, just add them to the inf files and it should work.

anyone who uses the digital output should appreciate this :
anyway to use hotkeys to switch sound output? - Windows 7 Forums

A program which allows hotkey switching between audio devices so you can switch back to speakers with alt 2 when not using digital output.

If you read this bronsky, might be a good idea to add it to the first post.

Hi, I have this laptop for over a year and in last months I have problem with overheating. When I bought I played SC2 and other games without problem but now when Ï tried play game like Duke Nukem Forever or Age of Empires Online I get laptot overheat and shotdown after 30-60minutes. This model should have good cooling what I read. So where is the problem? Do you think that I get dust in my laptop? Or there is something broken and I should give it to store for repair? Thanks

You could check for dust in the fans, and if you feel you're up for a challenge then replace the thermal paste with good quality paste such as MX-3/MX-4, IC Diamond etc. As long as you follow the instructions in the service manual to the letter, you won't go wrong.

    In theory yes,

though 35 bucks for a pair of any 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM is a good price I think.

I have noticed something about my 3820tg and wonder if this is normal. Whenever I start gaming and the GPU temps shoot up, sometimes I hear a creaking sound coming from the chasis. It also happens when I stop gaming and the temps go down. It never occurrs at idle or at load. Only when temps go up and down by a big delta. Is this normal? Is is just the case/heatsink expanding contracting due to change in temps? The sound is a creaking/buckling type sound. Almost got me kind of worried. Another theory is maybe the factory heatsink paste has gotten old and hard, and it cracks when expanded. Any input is appreciated.

Except Wally33's post was concerning digital (optical) and standard output, which go through the same jack but different settings in Windows.

I've previously tried to change the "jack assignments" (i.e. try to make the audio-in another audio-out), using this guide but it doesn't seem to work with the 3820TG

I've just noticed that the link I posted was wrong. It should've been this one:
    Intel® Core? i5-430M Processor (3M Cache, 2.26 GHz)

...still it doesn't mention 1333MHz sticks. Though, I've also noticed that the modules that came with my 3820tg were 1333MHz as well. :D
BIOS will probably recognize that the CPU doesn't support such high clocks so it will underclock them and adjust timings according to SPD. So basically, you'll lose some frequency but you'll get lower latency, too. Decent trade-off, I think.

It isn't that i5 processors do not support 1333MHz, rather it's because of Intel having some arbitrary limit on i5 processors and limiting them to 1066MHz. And you are right, when you use 1333MHz RAM, it will underclock the RAM to 1066MHz but drop the latency from CL9 to CL7.

So basically the latency drop is no reason to buy a 1333MHz Ram, because there are virtually no 1066MHz ram modules with CL 9. They all have CL 7 already. Or am I wrong?

Those of you disappointed in the 3830TG and wondering what you were going to replace your aging Acers with, it looks like LG has released the P330 in Korea. It looks incredible. Stock model looks to have I5-450M CPU and GT 555M GPU. Display looks like LG's new thin bezel design. Can't tell if it is IPS but it was supposto be. Resolution is only HD :(. USB 3.0. No idea on price. It looks like one beautiful notebook but we will have to see how LG deals with the Fermi's heat. G¸¶ÄÏ - ¡ÚLG XNOTE 11¿ù NEW¡ÚP330-UE40K¡Ú5½ÃÀÌÀü´çÀϹ߼ۡÚÅùè...

You could say that. On the other hand, I've noticed that the price difference between 2x4GB Corsair 1066-7-7-7-20 and Corsair 1333-9-9-9-24 (JEDEC@1066 is also 7-7-7-20) is less than €1 so I'm gonna go with the 1333 ones ;)

Choose automatic. It will automatically negotiate 1Gbps if it is supported. It's like that because of the IEEE spec which doesn't allow for 1Gbps option. As far as I know, only Intel has fudged with that spec and gave a 1Gbps option.

too456 is right. If you don't end up with 1Gbps it's either because the switch in your networking device doesn't support that speed or because you're not using the proper cable (Cat 5e as a minimum).

Actually, I am considering replacing the 3820TG with the Sony SE.
0.2 kgs more for a brilliant 15 inch 1920x1080 screen! Also the power brick is lighter/smaller, so it could actually be the same weight as the 3820TG.

For heavy computation I'm using a desktop these days.

I updated to Catalyst Software Suite 11.10 and I have experienced a problem.

When I watch a movie or play a videogame, I sometimes get a kind of screen-tearing effect. This only happens when something is moving from left to right or vice versa on the monitor. I experience this on both the laptop's screen and on external monitors.

I'm considering going back to some older drivers, however, I'd like to stick with 11.10 because of the BF3 improvements...

    Any suggestions?

The 9 cell is quite large. The 6 cell lets the notebook sit properly as it is flush with the bottom of the notebook. The 9 cell extends down a couple of inches and lifts the computer off the table quite a bit in the back.

I have both. I use the 6-cell for travel as it's lighter and means the bottom of the notebook is flat.

The 9-cell sticks out (see this picture http://i.imgur.com/GDnW5.jpg ), so there's some better airflow. I use it on my desk or around the flat because I can get get about 7 or 8 hours of battery life out of it with ease.

Needing some advice. I tried to repaste my 3820tg last night. All I had laying around was some Best Buy thermal paste. Didnt really seem to help any. If anything, it's worse. Idle CPU/GPU -50C/50C, Load 77C/88C. Ordered some mx-4 and will try again when it gets here. Question is, what do you guys do for the parts on the GPU heatsink that have thermal tape? Do you replace those or leave them alone? Heck, I wouldn't even know where to buy new thermal tape.
Also, would you recommend bending the screwclips that hold the heatsinks in place up a little so they result in more tension onced screwed in?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
