Thanks for the heads up! I'll be sure to use the conventional drivers then.

    Thanks. :)
When I turn on my laptop, the Windows clock always resets to the last setting that I made. I also tried updating the BIOS clock but the same issue happens. A depleted CMOS battery is the only thing that I can think of which causes this.

Replaced the CMOS battery and my clocks are behaving normally now.
Thanks to Bronsky for the Service Guide and maikvalberg for confirming the battery model. :)

i have posted a question over here:
[WIN7] W7 thinks i have Dual Monitors, but only have one....
(hope i havent broken some rule about including a link, if so... sorry)

but as my laptop is 3820TG, i feel i should also ask the question over here.

does anyone know how to change the settings for primary display? my machine has the main set to #2, but for the life of me, i cant seem to change it to screen one.

or is this even a problem that i should be concerned about?

    thank you
    Pine

Hi everybody, sorry to bring back up again an old topic.

I have the u2711 monitor and I am having trouble forcing the native resolution 2560x1440 over HDMI.

I tried following penan's instructions, but unfortunately the referenced dell_new_2.edid file is no longer to be found online so i'm stuck.

    penan:
I am very excited to read that you got this working.

I wonder perhaps if you could post the contents of the .INF file you generated?

I was able to use Switchable Graphics last time, but not anymore. I'm stuck on the Intel Graphics and can't seem to switch over to the ATI graphics and vice versa unless I change it in the BIOS. Anyone know a solution, aside from driver update? It was fine just a couple days ago..

i have had similar problems, seems that some how that the software is dis-abled, found that it was an easy fix (wasnt easy to find out how to do it first time)

    left click on "Start"
right click on "Computer", left click on "Properties"
    left click on "Device Manager"
    left click on "Display Adapters"
double click on "ATi Radeon HD (whatever you have)"

somewhere on that pop up window (4 Tabs), it will say that the device has stopped working and if you want to "enable" it.

last night i tried to BF3, and i couldnt, origin said that my hard/soft ware didnt support DX11 or what ever...
so i did the above steps, "enabled" it, went back and all worked...

hope that this makes sense, and works for you....

    Dell u2711 2560x1440 over HDMI

Ok. I actually figured this out myself spending countless hours messing around with monitor asset manager and phoenix edid designer.

I have produced three working drivers for 2560x1440 at 35hz, 40hz and 43hz.

I prefer the 43hz driver. I believe that this is the most hz we can get out of the 3820TG for 2560x1440 over hdmi, as the pixel clock is maxed at 165Mhz in this configuration.

I am using a HDMI->DVI converter - so the .INF files might not work with a straight HDMI connection to the display.

    1. Right click desktop, select 'Screen resolution'
    2. Click 'Advanced settings'
    3. Click the 'Monitor' tab
    4. Click the 'Properties' button
    5. Click the 'Driver' tab
    6. Click the 'Update Driver' button
    7. Select 'Browse my computer for driver software'
    8. Select 'Let me pick from list of device drivers on my computer'
    9. Click 'Have Disk' button
    10. Browse to directory and select a u2711 driver override .INF file
    11. Pick the desired driver to install (35hz/40hz/43hz)
    12. Complete installation and restart computer
    13. Right click desktop, select 'Screen resolution' and pick 2560x1440

    Hi again,
i've got some serious problem. I'm trying to install windows XP, without ACPI. But the installer hangs up after loading the drivers (before getting to the partition thingy). I've tried several windows copies, both with switchable and intel graphics , and now with the modded bios, with the intel card only, but the installer always hangs there, doing nothing. Maybe somebody knows the solution here... Messing with ACPI settings in bios maybe?

Hey guys, I just got an Intel Centrino 6230 yesterday, and I can't get it to work in my 3820TG. Oddly enough the Bluetooth seems to work, but the WiFi radio refuses to turn on or even be recognized in my device manager. I have the latest drivers from Intel, and I updated my BIOS as well. The radio still turns on and off on my previous card, but nothing I do seems to solicit a response from the new Intel.

To the people who are using this card, what did you do to get it to work? What drivers are you using, what hotkey software, etc.?

Thanks a lot for the info guys.

Did not work as everything is enabled already.

Still doesn't work. I ended up uninstalling the drivers and just using the BIOS to switch graphics instead by using the latest Intel and AMD drivers. No more hybrid drivers :(

After updating the drivers as per too456's wonderful consolidation post, wifi can no longer be toggled by Launch Manager v5.0.6

    Bluetooth still works.

Any advise on this issue is much appreciated.

I just bought an Acter 3820TG with the following hardware:

    Intel Core i5-480M
    4 GB RAM
    750 GB
    AMD Radeon HD 6550M(1024 MB)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

Which drivers (especially for the switchable grafics) do you recommend?
I would love to be able to switch the grafics manually in Windows. Would be perfect to be able to turn automatic switching on/off.

    Thanks very much

Hey guys, somehow over the last 6 months I ended up breaking my graphics switching options (perhaps by using the modded drivers). I've tried uninstalling, sweeping, and reinstalling several drivers to no avail. Right now I have the 12.8's installed and the newest Intel drivers, and I can switch from the AMD card to the integrated intel chip, but I can't switch back. The option in the CCC completely disappears, previously it would list that I'm under the power saving GPU. Any ideas?

I can't switch back to AMD either. It works for a while after a reboot but then something seems to break it. I was on Leshcat's 12.3 when it first started happening last week so I uninstalled it and cleaned up (very thoroughly) and tried Leshcat's 12.6 which worked for a couple of hours before that something broke it. Also when this happens, the LED on the right side indicating that the Intel GPU is enabled doesn't light up. Yesterday I just gave up and switched to dedicated GPU in BIOS. Will try to fix it again sometime in the future.

    Hi,

As posted earlier I had a dead lan board on my 3820TG. Yesterday I got the new part and today I exchanged the lan board. The first boot after the re-assembly showed the installation of the lan drivers. Lan works well now. But now I have stripe on the LCD screen which "move" when I use the touch pad. There are not permanently but come and go.

    Foto 1a.jpg

I disassembled the 3820TG to look for bad connection etc. but found nothing. Any ideas what went wrong?

Yep, that's where I am. I've found I can switch back to AMD by manually enabling it in the Device Manager, but my biggest problem is that the power cutting functions aren't working, so my battery life is abysmal. I think leshcat's drivers were the culprit in my case as well. Driver sweeper cleans a lot but doesn't seem to get everything since the function is still off. Eventually I'll probably just nuke this install and reload everything when I get a moment.

I think the shareware version of 3820Tray supports this. http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/562583-3820tray-hardware-control-powerprofiles-cpumonitor.html

BTW all ... I sold my 3820TG . Since we have a new mobile workstation in my office, I just didn't need the graphics power anymore. It has been a great little computer. I'll be selling my slate 500 next and picking up a new W8 tablet/notebook to use as my new portable/travel unit, probably a Microsoft Surface Pro or a Samsung S7H Hybrid. Both will have an I5ULV IB CPU and HD 4000 graphics and will be decent presentation devices. I will miss my old Acer. It was the best all-around notebook I've ever owned.

Did anyone successfully install catalyst 12.8 with switchable graphics? It wold let me boot unless I had discrete set in bios. I had to revert to 12.7 (beta) to have switchable on.

And Bronsky, thanks for all your help in these forums. My 3820tg wouldn't be as it is now without you.

Did you buy it from ebay/second hand? If it was pulled from a Lenovo or HP laptop, it may be blacklisted to only work with Lenovo/HP motherboards.

    AMD Catalyst

It doesn't mention the 5650 at the top (in bold), but scrolling down, it shows it supports all 5000 series. Anyway, this is the link I got it from and it works fine.

Did anyone else install the 12.8 version? It seems to be running a bit hotter then what i had before. From 85c max up to the low 90s (in a couple games I play)

My beloved PC won't start, and once again I return asking for help.. I have run on a SSD, Intel 320 120 GB, until this very night. Watched an episode of Community connected to my TV with HDMI. Suddenly the screen became black, while the sound continued. I panicked and turned it off, and now the PC won't turn on again, as it's stuck before BIOS and everything. If I try to press F2 or F12, it will hang too. I have positively tried to boot with the old HDD, so it's pretty clear that it's the SSD's fault.

    Please help!

    @ aunmar

    - get a usb stick with your S.O. in it. There are some programs to put the iso into the stick in order to make the pc to boot from it.
    - With the old hdd change the boot order in the bios to start with the usb
    - put the ssd into the tray, but don't connect it
    - connect the usb stick
    - boot, and when it has passed the point where it used to block, slide the ssd in
    - it should boot from the usb pen and take you to the windows installer. Choose REPAIR

This did it for me, when my crucial m4 started seizing up before I updated its firmware. Now it doesn't do it anymore, but I had to try this procedure twice, that's why my 4Gb usb drive is now a permanent Win 7 installation device =)

Not wanting to rain in your parade, but from that article the 5650 in the 3820TG seems to be PowerXpress 3.0, which they said isn't getting any benefits, only from 4.0 upwards...

I hope I am wrong, I would love to be able to get the latest switchable drivers from AMD without any hassle or BIOS enabling of dGPU and such

HD6000M are supposed to be PowerXpress 4... Is the HD5650M/HD6550M BACO?

I follow you anyway, as AMD interest is near 0 to develop such feature on past platforms, but hope...

Hello everyone, I've bought 3820TG just a few days ago, used but in incredibly good condition. This dude who I bought it from put i7 740qm instead of i5 CPU, it works very well but it doesn't have switchable graphics plus it is overheating when under full load so I'm planning mods.

I've paid 250 euros for it, did I get it cheap or overplayed it, what do you think?

This is what I've got for money:
    i7 740qm
    8gb ram
500gb hdd (says worked 0 hours in hd tune o_O)
    Ati 5650 1gb
    2 new batteries
screen is not glosy and it is very bright (found out that it is LG screen), I guess it is new.

I updated BIOS to 1.19 from 1.13 hoping that it will have more aggressive fan speed control but it is the same. RW everything with 0x00 option is able to spin them up much more, I've looked at modified ones on this site but all links are down (this one in particular is very interesting: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...x-3820tg-mods-tweaks-only-16.html#post7467467), does anyone still have this file and if so can you please host it again?

Since the Quad I7 fits in the PGA 911 socket without major modification, you can swap in a dual core I5 CPU with no problems. I think the I7 is ill-fitted for the 3820TG and will always have cooling issues, no matter what fan profile you use. You should be able to find a dual core Arrandale I5 at a decent price. If you're going to keep the quad, the fan profile is the way to go. Somebody on this site will have it.

Used 3820TG's here with upgraded I5s or I7s with SSDs are selling around $500, so you did okay. LG was one of the OEM displays offered in the 3820TG. They are very bright. The LG was said to be a bit grainy.

I thank you for your answer. I think I'm going to keep the quad as this guy who I bought the laptop promised a few new heatsinks with fans with it and another dim of 4gb, plus 4 more batteries once they arrive. This will cost me additional 40 euros so I think I have a pretty good deal.

Anyhow, I'm planning to mod my cooling somehow (have some left over copper heatsinks for GPU ram laying around so I'll try to solder it to the copper shim of CPU and GPU since there is space for them. Also I'm wondering if it is possible to do quad fans (there is space for that too) and connect them to original fan connection, but do you think the mobo will be able to provide?

With RW everything with max fan speed temps are fine for both CPU and GPU, however its pretty loud I must addmit.

The LG display is a big griny, and like you said it is very bright, however I like that it is not glossy, they displays manufactured date is March 2012 o_O so it must've been swapped.
