The two 2012 models that were available to me when I was in the middle east recently both had the 9700 radeon, I think most companies have similar models in the EMEA.

The dvd-multidrive (plus, minus and RAM) is *not* slot-loading.

About the subwoofer, to be honest I actually cannot tell! There seems to be something on the bottom of the laptop that *could* be a subwoofer, but I've not had time to properly check if it is in-fact a subwoofer. I've come across some specs (can't remember if it was on the official Acer site or in the user manual) that list the laptop as having a 2.1 audio system, which would suggest that there is a sub-woofer.

I just picked up my AS2012WLMi yesterday (I'm located in Alberta, Canada), and noticed that it has something that looks like it *could* be a speaker, on the bottom. There's a tiny speaker grill-looking thingy, about 1' in diameter centered and close to the front. I'll post more details when I can get more time with it.

Regarding the finish, if that's plastic then they've done a really good job of disguising it -- it actually even feels metallic. Very slick. Overall I'm really pleased with it so far, and I'm looking forward to running it through 3DMark tonight.

Shanks, could you please tell me from where you bought your AS2012. I am looking for one in Calgary area. Let me know if you have figured out any cons.[8D]

Are there any good shops in Vancouver? I live in Seattle and have been wanting to take a look at an Acer close up.

for a shop in vancouver, check out frontier pc (www.frontierpc.com). I almost ordered from their store in Vancouver, and at the time the 2012WLmi was in stock (i had one on hold at the beginning of june), so perhaps they have one on display as well. I didn't get a chance to make it into the shop, as i live across the water in Victoria. They were friendly folks as well, for what it's worth. and the price was fair if i recall...

Buy it from Generic Computers. They have the best prices in Vancouver for ACER notebooks. But they don't normally have those on display.

Frontier has better prices for ASUS notebooks. Check CTS computers in Richmond too.

I just recently bought a 2012 off of Newegg for a KILLER price. This was such a great bargain, it was just impossible to resist. I've had the thing now for 2 weeks, and I love it. The only problem I've had was with the touchpad, it has gone a bit crazy a couple times.. the cursor started shooting around the screen at a mere touch. I would put my finger down, and it'd shoot off in some random direction, then return when I removed it. When that happens, it makes it impossible to navigate anything, but it goes away after a reboot and has only happened a few times. I'm still unsure as to why it does that.. I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem, but maybe someone out there knows.

Here's the link by the way. Newegg is the best place to shop in my opinion. Excellent prices, lightning fast shipment, and great customer service. Doesn't get any better than that.

Considering this one... though I have heard that NewEgg will not let you return w/out 15% restocking unless you have more then 4 dead pixels. Anyone care to comment?

Has anyone upgraded the notebook to 2x512mb ram? If so how does it affect the performance and benchmarks?

    Thanks

I have the 2025 model, and i'll have to disagree with the sub sounding nonexistent. If you'll fire up some music then toggle the sub on and off, there is an obvious difference. Sub on sounds much better. Guess its just hard to get deep sound from something thats about an inch in diameter.

Oh by the way..i've read several of the posts that say they cant see the sub. On the 2025 there is clearly a small speaker right under the front of the notebook. I would think that if the sub is exposed on my model..it would be exposed on the other acer models if it is present.

where the sub woofer 'should be' on the 2012, there is an obvious place underneath the front of the unit within which, no doubt, a small hollow cavern presently exists (that is, there is 'room' for the woof, but no woof woof)
