Hi,
I got the same problem on my 6920, freezing when usin firefox 2 or 3. Well, I resinstall the system using the alt+F10 function. Then step by step, I found out that the problem came from the acer bio-protection fingerprint program. I uninstalled the software and now everything works fine... except the touch panel... for some other reasons...

did you install the lunch manager ?

thanks for letting us know.

Ben, I had the exact problem you describe... it's not mcafee, you'll see. Check this out and make the changes in your registry... For me, it's a miracle, I thought it's HDD problem, I installed windows 3 times... this fixed my freezes.

Hi, I have also a new Acer 6920, everything was fine when i connected thru wireless, but the last days I am in a hotel room I used the Lan connection for the first time and I start loosing it after some minutes, and after that it disable the network connection. I upgraded the driver to the last version available in Windows vista updates ( version 30). The connection last longer but then the computer start crashing with the blue screen you mentioned. I am using Internet Explorer. I uninstall macfee but still same problem .
Any thoughts? -
I agree with Mix3. You can also change the parameter to IDE for the hard drive in the bios, and then reinstall vista. By the way, my issue with the touch panel came from the batterie. I removed and replaced it and now everything works fine. Concerning the bio-fingerprint stuff: when it is installed and functionnal, there is a bug with firefox 3, a panel that appears when clicking on the bookmarks tab. The combination of Acer and Vista leads to weird issues.

I just want to point that there is a new version of Intel Matrix Storage Manager that(hopefully) solved the issue that some people had with the previous version..

I would rather say "The combination of ANYTHING and Vista leads to weird issues"
Just Kidding

I purchased the Acer Aspire 6920 last month and after the first day of using it, the screen froze and I was unable to get it to boot up after power cycling. I took it up to Circuit City where I purchased it and they replaced it with another Aspire 6920. The new laptop was running fine with occasional crashes (about once a week). Two days ago, the new laptop froze , but I was able to recover it after removing the power and batter pack for several minutes and then restoring power. I was surfing the net this morning and the screen froze, this time for good, just like the last one did. Took it to Circuit City and the tech there told me that there is an issue with the mother board and he has to ship it out to be fixed. I asked for the HD so that I could back up my files while the laptop is being repaired. So, here I am, backing up my data from my and without my Aspire 6920 for at least a week!!!
What are the odds of this happening TWICE!!! Makes me think that the laptop is a piece of crap!!!

makes me think there's a build quality issue so tell them its not fit for purpose and you want an upgrade
could work and its worth a try. -
So has anyone come up with a working solution to this problem?
I also have a 6920 and get the increasingly annoying freezes and bluescreens. I mean it's a powerful laptop in theory with all the latest hardware so it shouldn't be happening. -
Well I tried that already and updated to the latest NVidia driver but still the problem appeared so I tried what mi3x suggested above about changing the registry manually and this seems to have worked so far. Also noticed an improvement in the speed of opening programs, and menue's!
In order to access registry run regedit.exe for anyone that wants to know.
Anyway will post here again if the problem reappears but looking good ^^ -
I have a 9420 and struggling with this some seconds long freezing problem since many months now. It seems a very common problem worldwide and no clear cause has been determined, many theories... from heating to battery management... i can exclude all these from my tests... many just complain about ACER quality and flaw of design, also to send the laptop back to assistance did not fix the problem... just google a little to verify.
I have only one clue at present: the freeze never occurs on my laptop when running Second Life client... i realized that recently and no idea yet the reason. The freezing happens otherwise many times a day and now it is 20-30 seconds long. If someone has any idea of the effect of the Second Life client on the System please share... video card management? disk cache?
In the meanwhile i will look at the LPM suggetsion i found here and wil report....

It happened to me too. I wouldn't blame acer. It seems there's something wrong with Intel's SATA driver. Here are my findings:
The crash happens when the HDD attempts to go to sleep. Unfortunately, it attempts to do that every few minutes, regardless of the setting in the power control panel applet. You will hear the hard disk click, and the HDD light will remain permanently on (or off, depending on the version of the matrix storage driver you are using), and you will not get any response from the HDD. With the latest version of matrix storage, i got a bluescreen saying iastor32.sys malfunctioned.
I tried updating the firmware of my WD HDD because I saw a page in the WD site saying there are some laptop hard drives that cannot understand the sleep command in APM and constantly try to go to sleep. That didn't work because I already had the latest firmware.
To solve this, use the default IDE drivers, and to enable that, you have to disable AHCI in the BIOS. Reinstall the OS after changing that, just to be sure. After doing this, my 6920 worked like a charm. -
May you kindly elaborate further the steps to perform... thanks in advance
Is the reinstall of XP really a must?
