Can you make it log the temperatures? So you could check how hot it was when it crashed.

Hey guys, just going back to the initial graphic switching problem quickly. i notice all of you can boot using the media button...however, whenever i boot with it, the windows logo etc shows and then *blank*... i always get a blank screen! It doesn't even show up on my external monitor. so unfortunately sanke's help is lost on me because i can't actually boot using the media button and therefore can't carry out the rest of the steps. Is there any reason why when I boot with the media button i get nothing but all of you do? It really is starting to seem like i have the ultimate problem of all! i never get a post screen anymore either...i can only assume that goes back to when i initially updated my bios or something. hmm.

Cheers for the advice Hmoodie, unfortunately i had tried this before and it had not worked. I tried it a second time but unfortunately it seems my problem is a little more complicated :(

@ Sanke1, i have just managed to get the ati driver running on mobility on 10.6 and intel running on 8.64 driver etc...however, windows still boots up with the ati card using the external display. argghhh. so despite having the drivers in this setup i am still unable to use my laptop screen unless it is using the intel chip.

Any recommendations on which version of the bios i should have or anything like that if that makes a difference in this case?

The reason you are not able to boot into windows using media button is probably, you have acer recovery partition set to boot to that button or some boot files corrupted. I wiped clean all partitions including acer's recovery partition from hard disk. The hard disk showed 1 partition. Then while installing windows 7, i made new partitions. (I don't care about acer recovery anyway)

After following this, hopefully your media button will boot you in windows and allow you to install latest drivers

Edit: The solution partly works. Still 60% of time i end up with black screen in Win7.

    Losing my mind
For those who are really unfortunate - HDMI cable and HDMI->DVI will allow you to use ATI with external beautifully.

    GL everyone

Hi, guys, What about issue like rubenb and scorpion2001? I have same problem, but sometimes I have not VSOD with screen testing colors, but BSOD with atipmdag.sys message.

And I have this problem simply in office work (not only in games). This problem is very random (for an example, today I have BSOD right after loadings Windows) and its not resolved after I have windows 7 x64 reinstall. Maybe its a hardware problem?

Also I have minidamps, if anybody whants them.

Some recent developments, perhaps useful for anyone.

I have gone through all bioses and recently downgraded to original one; I have dual boot OS ( xp and win 7 32bit ), complete format, have gone through most drivers and even modded some, opened the behemoth 2x and done everything else humanly possible.

It all comes down to observations and seems ACER has some low level mess. To begin with when things work - they work so damn beautifully(hardware's fine)... when they dont you want to rip your hair out. I say low level mess because the only way for me to enable ATI acceleration is through the second boot media key on the right - it only works 20% of time (with some tricks ) and usually results in white screen.

This is really interesting - when it works you can clearly hear different startup sound as ATI card is launched ( more fan noise ) - so it fails at very low level. Second thing - if it boots up to windows with white screen or even black screen - enabling or disabling (mostly must be enabled ) WIFI key on the right would bring the screen back to life!? I was personally shocked.

Further more It appears as bootup tests are done 1 in 3 lights on the right ( where wifi button is ) is LIT - as a startup test? Well it does not light the other 2 but by holding WIFI button down it appears chances of successful bootup with ati card are increased.

So it really does appear to me, at least in my specific case, there's lowlevel messup (bios, chipset - intel wifi*, intel* chipset mobo, intel gpu ).

Perhaps this info is of any help, i am also grateful for feedback. Does anyone else have dualboot (and formated recovery partition)? XP, win7 both? Or got it all working on XP? Tnx

Working fine with Catalyst 10.7. Switchable graphics works well too.

But make sure ATI driver v8.64.4 is installed from here

    To Sanke1:

Thanks for posting your guide - I can see the sense of your method.
I have not been able to get it to fully work.
By that, I mean that I can do everything but get the latest driver to install.

I am setting up my Mom's new PC, an Aspire 8935G with Quad 9000 CPU:
    - I formatted the HDD, wiping the EISA partitions
    - I repartitioned the HDD, C for OS and software, D for data
    - I installed a legal copy of Win 7 Ultimate x64
    - I installed other drivers first, including Dritek Launch Manager
    - I followed your method for installing the VGA drivers

When I get to the stage of installing the latest Catalyst (10.7):
    - the Catalyst software installs but,
    - the latest driver does NOT install
    - in the Catalyst options, it shows the v8.64.4 driver as being the latest

Is there a part of this puzzle I am missing, a step I have missed?
My Mom's a little worried that I have spent most of a day trying to do one thing and cursing a dumb machine...

Make sure you have v8.64.4 correctly installed for Intel and Radeon.

Download official mobility catalyst 10.7 installer from amd website.
Boot using media button and once in windows, run 10.7 installer. It will just download the files. Unpack them and install the drivers from device manager manually.

Then boot back to normal mode using power button. If done correctly, Intel would be on 8.64.4 and Radeon would be on the latest version.

    Hi, sanke1

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, it just didn't go my way.
I tried repeatedly with the drivers you recommended, but the Catalyst installer wouldn't run.

I had to go with the Acer drivers, as my Mom needed to have a working laptop before Monday..

I'll give it another crack on the weekend.

Hi, guys, if you have troubles with grey stripples and other colors in hi demanding games, just downclock gpu yours videocard. I downclock it from 675 to 550 (like 4650). I now that its not a good solution, but its really help. Maybe you can try play with voltage and its can help too, but еo me has bothered to experiment.
Many thanks Ati (AMD) and Acer for notebook.

    Any update for the solution?

I hv tried all the solutions, e.g uninstall and install v8.64.4, use button beside 'HOLD' to startup only ATI video card, etc. Still give me blue screen and colour test screen.

sent back to acer support, they replace motherbod, whatever....

Now I decided to fall back to vista.

Bumping this thread due to a related problem.

I accidentally removed the ATI display drivers via the windows control panel thinking that I could just install the new ones afterwards (like any sane person would do :p). Well, now my laptop only boots in intel graphics mode, and I cannot update the ATI drivers or even install the default ATI drivers back due to an unknown error.

How do I proceed from here? I'd like to avoid a reformat if I can. Can windows repair or system restore restore old graphics drivers that have been uninstalled?

I'm pretty sure windows restore would fix that, it gives you the option to "undo" the restore if it doesn't or somehow makes things worse. But it should work just fine.

    It's me again...
My problems with the 8935g got worse a few months ago and i sent it back to acer with the problems of getting the weird colors screens and they replaced/repaired the cooling. Obviously they never checked if it worked and I still had the problem and sent it back to them. They sent it back to me stating there was no problem, clearly they still didn't perform any kind of decent stresstest. I immediately sent it back for a third time and they eventually replaced the motherboard.
Now I still have issues with it, after playing crysis for half an hour, it goes black green red etc. and sound is stuck. Is there no real solution besides downclocking?
The odd thing is: I used to have this problem with my desktop with demanding games on my nvidia 8800GT and i solved it by placing a fan in my casing, so I think it's an overheating issue.
One advice: NEVER BUY ACER! The hardware is just crap.

rubenb I don't thik that broblem is in just overheating. I have reinstal win7 x64, and have no issue while play in "starcraft 2" 6 or 7 ours. But have issue after 2-20 min of gameplay on old system. But in aero inteface I have this problem. I think the problem is half hardware and half software. But you are right ACER is suck.
