No electric sound neither for my Acer 1692.
Got it yesterday here in Italy, no probs with the battery leak effect.
Probably Acer corrected the problem with this second delivery :)

Unfortunately I was wrong. The buzz sound is there even if not loud. The battery lost 4% in 9 hours. I don't know if I'll send it back to Acer now. Think it's better to wait until they find a better solution.

My Aspire 1691 is not making any noise either. Maybe you should get it checked.

To the owner of 169x: did you try to burn some DVDs? I read somewhere it accepts only good-quality blank DVDs and it got problem with no-big name disks.
Another question: is so slow the hard-disk (I know it should be a 4500)?

haha, yeah I agree you don't to ask so much, you can just buy it straight away, because I am so satisfied with my Aspire 1691. But the truth is, its suicidal to buy something without surveying and asking around first.

I don't know about the burning problem because it burns well with my Imation discs. Although I had encountered only one problem so far which is on one occasion, I tried playing the "Shall We Dance" DVD which ran well with my Sony DVD player but it couldn't be played in my laptop. Other DVDs are OK, except that one. Maybe there's something wrong with the DVD or maybe the DVD ROM is a lil sensitive. Who knows...

    Good luck!

[V]PLEASE CAN YOU TEST THIS ON YOUR MACHINES AND LET ME KNOW IF I'M THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE:[)]

    I have an Aspire 1693wlmi

When I go into the Device Manager and go to properties for the Intel 2200BG Network Connexion (Centrino wireless card), and click Properties, Advanced, I can't see the left half of the dialogue box, and can't make it bigger. As I need to change these properties, it would be very useful to see this last half (left hand) inch or so.

Any ideas... I have changed every font under the Appearnace tab, but none affect this tab... also it is the only th eAdvanced tab that has these oversized fonts

    Anyone managed to sort this?

I wrote to Acer and they wanted me to return the pc, which didn't seem a great idea. I wrote back asking them to check if they had this problem too and I'll post their response.

You can affect the slider and other things even though you can't see the result. I found it a good idea to stop the centrino intel wif chip using power saving as it boost reception on wireless

    Hi guys,
I have a problem with my DVD writer on my 1693wlmi.
I have burned until now 2 dvds Memorex dvd-r and both were
not well written. I have used Nero and integrated software (NTI or whatever).
Both reported that the writing went well, but
after I sorted out the disc, I could see it was written just a half.
Of course, after I've put back into drive, it was not recognized.
The laptop was buyed in France.
Do you think a firmware upgrade will resolve the problem?
Can the upgrade provided by Maker be used on any Aspire 1690 ???
(I have read that depending of the country you buy, you may have different dvd drive?)
Thank you in advance for your responses,
    Moco

I have an English 1693, which uses the Ma****a UJ-840D drive and that appears to work fine (only used it once). I used Datasafe dvds (from eBuyer 8x speed).

I'd also be interested in the firmware upgrades, and is there any way to make them multiregional?

I have an aspire 1691 since few weeks.

The laptop looks fine and with a good performance, althought when running on max cpu speed (1.6 Ghz) it gets very warm and is uncomfortable to touch. Also the fan works several times, comparing with some friends laptops which fan works only very few times.

Is it normal on this acer laptop??? Does anyone have this problems?

    hi.
    i bought 1692 @ 1250 euros @ greece.
    pentium M 740, x600, 80GB@4200.

    for some benches, check
    http://www.thelab.gr/showthread.php?s=&postid=217899#post217899

good performance, could be killer laptop with:
    1GB ram (2*512 sodimm333) like http://www.memory-configurator.com/ACER/TravelMate/TravelMate-1690-series--1692WLMiv-.html

and a faster HDisk (propably @7200).

    some answers:
it has a very hard noticeable buzzing sound when closed&battery=on, but it doesn't drains battery.

about S/PDIF: i was surprised, but it has optical s/pdif output from the black audio connector. the plug is mini-toslink, propably you'll need a mini-toslink - toslink interconnector. audio quality from s/pdif is awesome, i connected it with Creative digital 5500 decoder that has optical input :)

about Linux: one live cd that booted was KANOTIX, a knoppix-debian based live cd.
    http://www.kanotix.com/
You have to set nopcmcia @ start.
If you like it, you can install it by typing kanotix-installer-latest-web at a root shell.
I use SuSE Linux 9.2. U can install it by choosing manual install, and at 1st boot, u must type NOPCMCIA=yes @ grub menu.

p.s. Notebook review is a very nice forum, congrats[ :D]

Hi to all Aspire 1691 or 169X Fans.... Although I don't own a Aspire 169X. I've read and come across all survey, overview, specification reading on this Model... I feel is a worth specification of Notebook for that Price... If you are considering to get 1 go ahead you'll never regret of getting it.I heard though there is some problem like I've read in this Topic pages.. If you get a new 1 then I think all this matter and problem shall be expose to "ACER" and you'll get the solution, cause is still under warrantty. The problem that I read are DVD+-RW burning & reading problem, the battery drain out, sound of the fan, matter with Wireless Devices Manager Interface, problem with heat. I think you guys should make this topic a merge and send an E-mail to Acer and ask about all this Matter. If you guy want to know more specification about this Notebook... drop a message maybe we can share the information.. I have all the brochure, specification in softcopy format. Last word I love[:I] this notebook but I can't afford I'm using a old Compaq wanted to Sell it off the get this one(it was a good news) but I got cheated by the buyer last minute cancelled the order[V] I'm so pissed off with that customer[ :(!]. Now I'm happy that there is not only me that treasure this wonderful specification and I'll try my hard best to get this notebook.[ :)]

I'm really interested in the 169x Series, but I have a few queries:

    1. What speed does the Hard Drive and DVD+-RW run at?
    2. I'll be playing games such as The Sims 2, Football Manager and FIFA Soccer. Would 64mb graphics suffice or should I get 128mb?

I have a budget of 900 including the Acer 3-year extended warranty with accidental damage cover (I believe is 100 quid including VAT in some places). The 1691 model should be sufficient for my needs.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I checked this (1691) computer in a store and I have to say, that I was quite disappointed to the Crystal Bright screen. It was/is terrible. Absolutely terrible. Every light reflects from it and you can't find any position to avoid these reflexions!

If you are sitting in the dark room, they might work well, but if there is any light source... [xx(]

Hey guys - thought I posted something yesterday here but obviously not! I purchased a 1690 in April this yr and so far has been back 3 times with a quiet buzzing(have to hold to ear) with drains battery (1-2% per day). Totally sick as received back again with same problem and now after 40 mind on AC the screen starts flashing & then goes black not off, just colour black.

Also just discovered that although computer is supposed to have 128K graphics (says so on the tin) actually only 64MB!!!!

Anyone else had similar/any solutuions - Acer do not appear to be much good & refusing to replace even though broken straight from the box.

If it worked however it would be a good machine me thinks!

I have the 1691 and succesfully overclocked it from 1.6 to 2.0. Thanks Meaker for the info. Can you help me with this:

Now I'm thinking of upgrading the RAM from 512 DDR 333 2700 to 1gig DDR 400 3200. I'm thinking the higher frequency will help with the overclocking.

Will this work, or should I stick to DDR 333?

The one being sold at CompUSA has integrated graphics. I didn't like its screen, it was even more reflective than most of these new reflective screens.

I think the DVD may be a tad loose and vibrating a bit too much when it spins up. I'll have to open her up and tighten the screw a bit in my case.

    I'll be getting my 1691 next wednesday (6th July), with X700 128mb.

It appears i've made an excellent choice, and I can't wait to try DC and 3d rendering on the X700. :)

Does this SetFSB program run in windows? If so, what happens when you set the FSB too high, and the laptop crashes before you can change it back in windows, or what stops this from happening?

    Dj,

Is this the Catalyst version that came with the Acer (provided by Acer) or is it the one from the ATI website? If it's the one from the ATI website, that could explain it. This version is not designed for the Mobility chipsets. Plus, there could be some minor changes made on the drivers provided by Acer to make it compatible.

it's from ati's website. maybe there's the problem. tweaker for powerplay would be nice... because, power consumption at battery saving mode is 16W and max performance mode 24W. so there is a lot of difference.

It's just voltage and frequency control. Hopefully Acer and other companies will allow the x600 to be supported in the mobility series as my laptop is proof they do work very nicely.
