Also scandinavian countries, although I think with the butt ugly 9cells battery

I'm also waiting for availability in Spain... -
I'm waiting for availability in spain too...
For those who already enjoy the 3820.... how much does the power supply weight?
Which is the total weight of the system (laptop + power)...

I am seriously starting to think that i'm going to wind up with an Envy 14 or a Z if Acer doesn't do something soon. -
can you link me to some z12 info? google search just shows me articles from 2008
i would TOTALLY be on the waiting list for the envy 14 but its just too heavy and has a dvd drive. ugh i soooo wish they would refresh the envy 13 instead of eliminating it. envy 14s specs packed into an envy 13... im all over that
i hate to say it but a Z looks likely in my future because i really want a backlit keyboard.
or.. i might even get the ul30vt / ul30jt... because apparently doing the backlit keyboard mod on those laptops is easy.
the only thing holding me back on the 3820tg is the lack of backlit keyboard. -

Thanks Jay!
Ugh... not a fan of 6gb ram and dual ssds w/o trim. just drives costs up.. i'd rather have 4gb ram and a regular hdd standard. i'll be throwing in my own ssd anyway. -
). None of these were offered on our CTO and most of the rest of the world has those options. I am hoping that Sony opens the CTO here in the US to all of the options like it has on initial refreshes in the past. With the standard HD, you could swap in an Intel SSD. I wonder if you could swap a storage drive out for the DVD?
The changes are going to be minor on the Z12, but the full CTO may make a significant difference to you in price and functionality. I have not yet decided what i will get if I can't get the 3820TG before the end of June, I am still considering the Z, the Envy (I have an 11.6" 1410T for travel but need to transport my main notebook for 6-8 presentations a year - so yea I am concerned about the extra weight) and still hoping that Dell gives me a third option before then by releasing an XPS 13.

... GO FLYERS!!! -
Hey guys, just wondering from those of you that already have it are the arrow keys really as small as they look? I have an asus 1005ha netbook with the half size arrow keys and not that its a deal breaker but I expected a 13inch laptop to have regular sized keys! Im hoping for a MAJOR upgrade this summer! I think my current netbook gets about 300 in pc mark06 so the 7000+ would be awesome!

Let's hope that the Acer anouncement next week is followed by the 3820TG I7-620M/HD 5650 showing up on Amazon.com the next day.
Hey, I can dream.

any eta on a new dell xps 13?

You should go to the Acer press conference in New York next week and make them sell us a couple of 3820TG's.I'm sure they'll have some of the high spec models on display. I'm sure you can twist some arms.

Sony Z refresh doesn't look that appealing to me. I hope that all it does is drive down the prices of the curreny Z11 so that I can buy one of those. AFAIK Sony uses a special SSD that is slimmer then most SSD's? That's what I heard, so if you want to swap if out for your own it would have to be a Sony branded.
The 3820t is still a winner in my books... if it ever releases. I don't need a laptop till Fall but this summer will be a pain without a toy to play with. I'm using a 4 year old Sony laptop with a battery life of 1.5 hrs, and a 8 year old Dell desktop at home that has 2 gigs of ram... Hopefully Acer will make some big announcements next week! -
This new asus could be a contender, maybe a 13" without the dvd.....

Oh I agree I'd much prefer the 13" 3820tg! Just the price is pretty amazing! Between 8-900euro!
-
I would buy one here, Acer Aspire 3820TG-434G64n W7HP64 - Notebooks - computeruniverse.net but its got a German keyboard...If someone found an english keyboard I would get it now...
Or anyone know of an Acer parts shop that might be able to get 3820 keyboards? -
Awesome value that! I'd hold out for the higher spec i5 or i7....the keyboards will probably pop up on ebay soon enough they usually do...you'd probably survive a few weeks just touch typing anyway...nice name btw...my surname is Hendrick
-
Actually the ones for the 3810t are up on ebay, you'd want to check compatibility though:

Which one should I buy?
wait and buy envy 14( i5-430m - 5650 - 2.2kg - According to 3820t, longer battery life)
don't wait and buy acer 3820t ( i5-430m - 5650 - 1.8kg ) -
Otherwise, I guess it depends on what country you're from. I have the tendency to believe that southern europe's screens are better than others, but it's a wild guess. Also the german and austrian one, judging on some customer review, isn't so bad. -
-
For those of you who already have the 3820T, which is the "travel weight"?, laptop + power source + battery?
Thanks -
-

2.1 kilos I read for the 3820TG. When i get mine I'll weight it for everyone too.
-
You can legally download a copy and use the cd key on the machine. -

This might be a nice carrying case for the 3820TG. Says no handle, but it sure looks like it has one. Would actually prefer one of their hard cases but none in 13".

Express service, I don't know if thats via air but I assume so. Guess i will find out tomorrow when its shipped out. -
Once we find out if the keyboard is switchable (thanks for being the "crash test dummmy" on this one). I'm going to look my hardest to see if I can find the place to snap that cable into.

So, I could use a German Win7x64 cd key to install and validate/register an English version of Win7x64? Is that what you are suggesting? I'm guessing it's legal, but do you think it would work? Have you tried it before?
Thanks man. -
-
It will work for sure
-
-
Still won't make a German keyboard into an English one.
Will reserve judgement on the legality and practicality of using the sticker key . . my guess is you may end up talking nicely to microsoft as some of the keys no longer work online (too many W7 clean installs being done using the ones on the bottom of demo machines in shops I hear) -
As for the CD key, I don't see how it won't work online? How can it be used if the box is sealed.....? I'm not talking about a demo machine. I don't think you understand, that key on the windows 7 sticker is the installs cd key and you own that. Its your machines key.
I'm not talking about using another machines key, my key, my notebook....
If all else fails I have a legal copy of Windows 7 Premium I brought..... -
So…for my 201st post: I finally have my 3820TG! Picked it up on Saturday…430M, HD5650, 500Gb, QWERTZ layout, 3 years warranty, and 9 cell (though I’ve ordered it with a 6 cell battery, I’ll contact my retailer about changing it, I’ve also ordered a slim (170g) samsung external ODD, and though the produt number is correct, I was definately given the standard (370g and larger dimensions) one).
Built quality:
So far the case seems to be solid, no sign of the plastic parts bending or anything (even with the 9 cell). The weight feels OK (I’ll measure it later), can’t wait to see how lighter this notebook would be with the 6 cell I was supposed to have it with.
The keyboard is something I must get used to, by this I mean I have or one has to get used to the hitting points of the keys. The keys are not shiny, but tend to collect fingerprints. There’s a slight flex – You have to push buttons hard to notice it - , but not as serious as the Latitude E6500 had I was using last month.
However there’s a flaw I don’t know wheter it bothers me or not: the plastic line connecting the speakers bend upwards a bit, and no matter how many times I push it back in place, it pops up again in a minute or two (I’m talking about the part of the line where the „Virtual SurroundSound” sign takes place, maybe because of the bass coming out-haha). Not that big of a problem, though Acer could have done better.
The lcover of the lid and palmrest is metal, looks nice, feels solid. The bottom plastic also feels rigid enough, the laptop can be lifted by the edges without any sound.
System:
I haven’t refreshed the BIOS yet, and I don’t think I would, well, definately not till I contact my retalier (next Tuesday), so the notebook functions as the german users mentioned in their early posts. Anyways the first refresh did more harm than good, I haven’t read anything about the second refresh yet, so sticking to the original BIOS seems to be the right thing to do.
While owners still wait for the proper BIOS refresh (there’s been 2 so far), members of notebookjournal forum posted a the solution of the pci-e, screen flickering, and screen issue. By screen issue I mean the germans figured out Acer calibrated the screen to be dimmer than avarege, re-calibrating the screen solves contrast issues (edit: I’m happy with the screen so far, OK my nickname isn’t „eagle eye the maximalist”, contrast and colors are OK with me so far).
So the germans found the remedy, currently the discussion is about OC’in the HD5650.
The system utilises 3.68 Gb of RAM, even with the HD5650 active, I recall someone reporting this anomaly, explanations welcome.
Another strange thing: the notebbok dosen’t seem to have bluetooth, I thought all of the TimelineX series would have it. Bluetooth I could do without, but hey, dosen’t it supposed to be equpied with?! The latest models (the ones with the 450M) have BT 3.0, so why wouldn’t the earlier one have BT 2.1?!
(BTW I’m a bit sad, so typical…the 450M became available in Germany after 3-4 days I ran out of time, well, You can’t win’em all…Ok, it would take at least a month till it’d hit the hungarian stores, definately out of my time.)
The system runs quiet, the CPU fan seems to run 80-85 % of the time and probably on the lowest speed possible – it’ really quiet (the behaviour of the fans are not surprising knowing the first reports.)
Temps seem to be alright, sorry I don’t want to install any additional monitoring software till my retailer solved my misery.
If interested in pictures, let me know, I’ll post some.
That’d be for now, I’ll keep You updated. -
Congratulations!! Details on the recalabration would be nice. Glad to hear that the display is ok for you. It's going to seem like a movie screen after 3 months on my 1410T. Keep us informed. Now it's official that we're the last to get the Timelines.
I just saw a 14" travelmate on the US site. That's 2 refreshed timelines without a single GPU model.
Best of luck with your 3820TG. Would be intersted in how portable it is after you carry it around for awhile.

ofcourse we're interested in pictures man!!
