Yes, we have solid info. From Facebook we had an end of June release date. Today Bronsky got some solid inside info. Here's the quote:

Ok, couple of questions to folks who may be familiar with the Acer Timeline X series (like going to touch one or see one at your local Fry's for example, or actually trying a friend's out or already own one)... Does the exterior durability of the Timelines seem good? Like, does the plastic feel flimsly like a netbook (Asus EEEpc, Acer Aspire One)? Or, does it feel durable/thick/hard plastic feeling like a HP pavilion notebook or a Macbook?

Also, in terms of price, would it be cheaper/more-expensive to get an ENVY 14 instead with the i5+5650switchable?

    Thanks for your assistance!

You should ask this question in the new owner's forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...-info-benchmarks-tweaks-mods-upgrades-11.html

They will be able to give you a sense of the build quality, if it has not been addressed already.

I think the HP and the TimelineX will be close in price. If HP gives the kind of discounts they did when the 17 was released a few weeks ago, you will be able to pick up an Envy 14 with the specs in my sig for a little over $1,250 (+ cost of slice) with the factor 160GB SSD. That is a great price for an SSD equipped unit. The Acer will probably cost in the $950 range for an I5/5650. Add $380 for the SSD.

I find some things about the envy really attractive. The display for one. The weight keeps me focused on the Acer. I think the MBP look of the Envy is going to make it a winner though.

I agree that build issues would be better asked in the 3820TG owners lounge.

Pricing can't be too different from the UK pricing. The models are all selling in UK on amazon.co.uk

not too bad... I can't wait to get one!

What is add 380$ for SSD? I dont see any with that... (solid state Drive)

I meant putting it in after market. There is a model of the 4820TG with a 160GB SSD. It is for sale in Germany ATM.

    Hi,

Does anyone know which models have "sim card slot", so one could install
UMTS module inside? As I've understood there is one free mini-pcie inside?

I can tell you that LX.PTC02.055 (AS3820T-334G32n) doesn't have sim card slot, it's just a hole without sim card reader.

If you have 3820TG you can check do you have sim card reader by removing battery and removing black (very similar colour as the plastic) tape which is located in the same wall as battery pins. Under the tape is hole. That hole would eat SIM cards, but check it carefully that it really has a reader.

Based on what others have heard from Acer USA, the T models will be available to resellers in late June. The TG models may not be available until sometime early July. :(

I was hoping to get this before I left for a trip on July 14. It doesn't look like that is going to happen, but I think I'll wait it out and stick with my Dell dinosaur for a few more weeks.

So I've been trying out a DM3 with a 1.6 GHz AMD dual core and an ATI3200 card (320gb 7200 drive, 4 gig ddr2 mem and win 7 64 bit). But seems slow to my liking, and the battery is getting about 3 to 4 hours max with simple browsing.

Came accross this for an extra $60 at NCIX ...

    NCIX.com - Buy Acer Aspire AS3820T-5851 Intel I3-330 4GB 320GB 13.3IN Screen Intel HD Windows 7 Prem Notebook - LX.PTC02.093 In Canada.

Appears to be teh 3820T with an Intel integrated graphics chip (I assume a 5400 rpm drive?) but an i3 330M processor, whereas the talk here appears to be about the i5?

Would this be a big improvement over the DM3 with an L335 AMD processor with the ATI 3200 card, or the SU4100 Intel with the 4500HDM card for that matter (also trying that out)?

You can probably find 3DMark06 scores for notebooks with Integrated graphics and the ATI 3200. I know the Intel scores in the 500 range. My guess would be that they are about the same. The I3-330M will run about 30% faster than the L335.

The 3810T with the Core i3-330M and Intel HD graphics will give you better battery life, better graphics performance, and better power. The 330M is much faster than the L335 and SU4100 despite not having Turbo Boost like an i5 or i7.

The ATI 3200 seems to get mid 1000's (double the 4500 card). But what I'm wondering is whether I'll notice this given I NEVER game. I.e., is this noticeable with video streaming or viewing say DVD's or bluray via an external drive?

Leaning towards the 3820T. Prefer the chicklet keyboard of the DM3, though I hate the F key layout of it and the Page Up/Down, home and end keys which I use alot require one to hit a FN key.

Build of the Dm3 is likely superior, zero flex. But again, can likely live with teh 5820.

Think I'm almost sold ... problem is I can't test drive the 3810 or 3820 series as I can't find a place in Toronto Canada that sells them and would have to ship in from BC. Hmmmm...

With the proper driver and flash upgrades you should have no trouble with the video with the Intel GPU. Of course, the better the GPU, the more seamlessly everything runs.

The funny thing about the laptop location is that NCIZ has all of its 26 units in a Toronto warehouse but has none at any of its retail locations. See inventory Check Inventory

$729 for that? Wow, at NCIX it's $649CDN, but the NCIX one appears to have the i3-330? How much faster is the i3-350 vs the i3-330?

Guess the Amazon model also has bluetooth.

Wait ... the Amazon model also lists an 8x DVD burner? Is that an external as I thought the 3820 did not come with an option for an internal drive???

Those of you who don't care about discrete graphics should check out the Toshiba Portege R700. It was recently released. In form factor it compares to the 3820T though it also includes an optical drive and comes in almost a pound less. The Acer is likely to be cheaper than this and include a discrete graphics card, so I would probably pass on this one. Still, glad to see companies coming out with new products that seek to go after the ultraportable market.

Acers are typically lower priced offerings for whatever reason. I haven't been looking for a laptop since Dec 2007, but I recall back then that Acer's were considered "cheap" and prone to issues.

I've had my Acer 5920G since that time with, knock on wood, very little in the way of issues. Still hoping the 8600GT card it came with doesn't succumb to the issues I've read about!

I had a HP DM3 in my hands for a few days before returning it, and honestly, the Dm3 is built beautifully. But for some $70 more I can get a 3820t, i3 CPU vs SU4100, slightly better integrated Intel graphics card, DDR3, only minus appears to be a 5400rpm drive vs 7200. Not sure how the build quality of the Acer will compare to the Dm3 though, but I'm guessing it will be good enough that I don't have to worry about spending an extra $200 to $300 on laptop that will be mainly used for internet surfing/email/youtube, etc.

Keep staring at this model as I'm looking for a smallish laptop for Office/email/Youtube and occasional bluray playing (external bluray drive). Have a few Qs:

    1. Given that I will do ZERO gaming on this, is there any reason I really need to spend the extra $200 or whatever it is and wait for one with the Radeon cards?

    2. Just how bad are the speakers on the 3820?

    3. I was looking at purchasing this model ...

Canada Computers - Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3820T-5851 Notebook - Intel Core i3-350M, 13.3" HD WXGA, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, Wireless BGN, Gb LAN, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (LX.PTC02.093)

But whereas the above link states it's a i3-350, this link (with the same model number) shows it as a i3-330?

    NCIX.com - Buy Acer Aspire AS3820T-5851 Intel I3-330 4GB 320GB 13.3IN Screen Intel HD Windows 7 Prem Notebook - LX.PTC02.093 In Canada.

Does anyone know which it is and whether the i3-350 model has bluetooth built in? I went to CanadaComputers today and the guy was beyond useless. Wouldn't open the box (understandable), but the box didn't state which CPU it had. Showed him the various websites and he said "well, I think it's the 350 one and I think it has bluetooth".

The Acer website appears to need a serial number to check the information on the computer (contrary to say the HP site where you just need the extended model number).

    Thanks!

The 330M is just an earlier version of the I3 model. When the 2nd gen Arrandales were released, Acer put them into production. It's likely that they are both right.

No, for office and videos at Youtube and 3D charts you doesn't need an ATI card.

The speakers are lousy for my ears. Don't think to hear something like a opera on it or doing some sound editing.

It's printed on the Acer package. The service need you just look at the specs on package. It is listed on the same place as the wlan, cpu, ram and ...

    Just ask them.

    Best regards

Hey pbc, I just joined to answer your question :p

I picked up a 3820T-5851 from canadacomputers myself today. :D

When I first got there I was skeptical about it having a i3 350m myself cuz ncix had the same model with 330m and canadacomputers listed it as a i3 330um at first . But when I looked at the package 350m was printed.

But it doesn't have bluetooth though.. a little drawback i guess. I'd take a picture of the label but i cant find my camera atm

    Hope that helped you out!

Ha, thanks. Ended up picking one up from the Newmarket store and am typing off of it as we speak. He took all of $5 off and threw in a $10 bluetooth USB dongle with it.

Will post some 3DMark06 and PCMark scores when I get a chance.

    Initial thoughts:

    - island kepboard takes a bit of getting used to, but nothing to complain about. Not as nice as the chicklet keyboard of the HP DM3, by far, but nice that it has dedicated Page Up/down, home and end buttons (unlike the annoying DM3 which you had to hit a Fn button to get these).
    - track pad is not the greatest. Would've prefered two distinct buttons vs the single bar, and the right button seems a bit "mushy" on mine
    - MUCH faster than the AMD version of the DM3 (which I returned, though it was a refurbished unit)

That's it for now, will post more later!!

    Hard Disk: 5.8

Compare this to the AMD Neo L335 DM3 I had with 4 gb ram, ATI3200 card and 7200rpm drive:

Surprised at how much the graphics score has improved given the Radeon 3200 vs integrated Intel GPU. Nice. Also surprised the hard disk scores are that close!

So what are most people doing with their Windows. Fresh reinstall, or just uninstall as much bloatware as possible? Is any of the Acer stuff useful?

Great to hear you picked one up too! I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy the 3820T or the 1830T to replace my aging AAO-ZG5 at first (performance vs size) but I think I made the right choice.

I think I am gonna pick up a SSD for this machine in maybe a week after I confirm that everything is ok with this baby, and thats when I am doing a fresh w7 install.

One thing I noticed though is if I try to launch something via the jumplist, instead of getting what I want, I get a window explorer session at "C:/Windows/system32" instead. You get this too?

Hi guys. I´ve been long lurking around various forums and reading review to finally take the plunge and pick up this lappie. I´m pretty confident it will suffice my needs in terms of performance, I also trust in the build quality and the battery endurance of the Timeline series, since my dughter has been using the larger predecessor Timeline 4810, and so fa so good-she´s been quite happy with it-the battery runs as long as a year ago, which I find peculiar. What I´ve been really totally confused by, however, is the quality of the display of the 3820. While I rate the display of the 4820T as average-not great, but subjectively OK- I´m puzzled by how much some of the professional reviewers´scores of the display vary-between 50-96%. Isn´t that strange ? So, what do you think ?
