Does the latest BIOS updates solve the issue?
I used Phoenix BIOS editor to check it seems there is thermal control in the new BIOS.
Topo you might want to enter BIOS and check BIOS settings as well.
-
So.... I already check the Bios is an Phoenix one, I cant modify the CPU activity(speed , etc) from Bios.
This new model of laptop doesn't have yet another Bios to proced with an upgrade ....
My last laptop Acer 5315 it had the same problem with the CPU but I updated the Bios and the problem was solved !
For the moment is not disponible any other BIOS version for Aspire 5542 ...
I am still waiting the Acer answer reguarding this problem(I emailed to them yesterday)....
I read something about Bios Editor ....is safe...I mean, can this unlock some hide Bios features ?
If "Yes" can I have a link for download and an HowTo if exist?! -
Nevertheless here is the link.
Don't worry for now since the official BIOS for your laptop isn't out yet.
Edit:
I was wrong the BIOS for your laptop is released in Acer China Site version 1.03.
If your BIOS version (use CPUZ to id version number) is the same don't bother. -
Yes, I confirm, the Bios version is 1.03. What do you think, is it some place on Internet from where is possible to buy or to require a service manual for a new model laptop like this?
-
-
-
Otherwise I could tried the new BIOS on my 5542 but unfortunatelly is doesn't exist other BIOS for this laptop. -
-
I already emailed to Acer. Hopefully them will read my message ..... For the rest I am looking for some good thermal paste and some documentation to desassembly the laptop.
-
have you gotten any news?
-
Nothing for the moment.
Acer Support didn't answer me for the moment - I told them the problem(I sent 2 emails to them).
I am still looking for an HowTo or something to help me to open the laptop, some image, etc. After I will cahnge the thermal paste - definelly I will improve the situation with this!
Also if someoane has some more stuff about this model or another model like this please post it here. -
I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5738z. As soon as the fan goes to full speed when I use a demanding application
(1080p decoding, video editing, etc), the fan stays at full speed even after I stop using the demanding applications and
the temperatures are back to near the idle temperatures (with < 5% CPU usage). When I contacted Acer for this issue, they
told me to make a complete system restore with the Recovery Partition, flash to the latest bios... but none of them worked.
They concluded that I could send the laptop because it was hardware problem, but i'm not sure it is... since it seems to be
a common problem. What thoughts do you guys have? -
Finally I received the Acer answer to my inquiry.

This was really healpfull for me !!!! I' m joking!!! -
Right now I looked on Acer web site and I seen that is already a new version of BIOS from 19/11/2009. I already downloaded but I didn't see any changelog.
Any way I will start the Bios upgrade right now! -
That's the downside of acer, I think.
-
-
yes good advice...usually i used winflash(for acer 5315) but , i don't know why in this case(win 7 64 bit) this utility on 64 bit is not working so I will tray in dos ....
I am looking for an how to ... -
Read the README.
In DOS Mode use tab to autocomplete the command
I recommend the following flags
>phlash16.exe /c /v /s /x bios.wph
Don't interrupt flashing and do it with AC connected.
/c = Clear CMOS Checksum
/v = Verify after flash
/s = Slient otherwise you will hear irritating beeps
/x = ignore XMMS Memory Checks
DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT USE /BBL
This is the bootblock for emergency recovery in case of flash failure it is the only hope so do not flash it.
Touch wood in case of failure see here -
Thanks again,
I will try to update this weekend ! -
did it work?
-
The way to do this update for windows 7 64 bit was a bit different.
I mean: I took off the HDD from the laptop with preinstalled windows 7 64 bit on it ....I put in a spare one in laptop, and I installed on it Windows 7 32 bit !!!!
After that with WinFlash I done the BIOS update from 1.03 to 1.05 !
Note this : from windows 7 64 bit was impossible to do the update ! (I tried from DOS also (I couldn't do the bootable drive)), and I tried with WinFlash 64 bit --->> is not working also(when I tried to lunch the aplication was giving me some errors). So I undesrstood that the problem is windows 7 64 bit(is impossible to update the BIOS from it).
The bad point is that I didn't see yet any radical change after the update !!!
Probably just one:
The CPU temperature is moving from 46 C to 54 C during I am working on laptop and the FAN ROTATION are the same !!! NOt very noisy during the day but a bit disturbing I think during the NIGHT when is very quiet.
If I remember well - first to update to BIOS 1.05- the fan rotation was a bit more noisy from 52 C in up ....
The bad thing is that when the CPU is to cold again(when from 53 C is going down to 46 C) the rotation are the same ....
Is all for the moment ! -
Same Problem here. No Solution yet!
BTW can you tell me CPU usage when you play 1080p MP4/MKV/WMV HD video
Mine going upto 50%-70% depend on the format, but my L500 with Intel Graphics keep it below 25% for all the formats.(Sometimes below 10%)
Just wanna know it's common or not. To be honest i expect less CPU usage with ATI card. -

I have an Aspire 5542 as well. I wanted the service manual so I could install a bluetooth module since mine did not include one. Acer wouldn't give me the manual so I did an extensive search online. I finally came across a place that had it for sale. I went ahead and bought it. If you would like a copy, please let me know and I can send it to you because there is no sense in making others purchase it too.
-
Wow that is awesome, could you please send the service manual to me? I could not find it either. Thanks in advance!

Service manual is here: [REMOVED BY MOD]
