Well, the computer froze less when I used the default Intel storage drivers. It wasn't constant like it was before. Every single time the game started freezing, I would hear the harddrive making a spinning noise. So I assumed that was what caused the freezing problems.

I'll try to help you guys when I receive my 5740G from the Acer repair shop.

In the light of what aylafan wrote could you Osiyo or anyone else check in power-saving options of Windows is the HDD set to ever spin-down when the notebook is plugged in?

My hard disks are supposed to turn off after 20 mins of no activity, plugged in. Should I change this? I assume playing a game constitutes doing an activity, right?

Mine is set to never spin-down when plugged-in. What aylafan hears seems to be drive spin-up so apparently if you have enough RAM your drive may not be needed for 20min and then when new level/texture loads it starts again but the game freezes until HDD becomes available and loads the texture.
Just a theory but worth testing- set it to never spin down when plugged-in.

I recieved this notebook today and I'm generally very happy with it. However, there's one (quite big) problem. The power connector is loose and was when the laptop was taken out of the box and requires e a bit of fiddling around with it to get it into position whereby it makes contact and powers the laptop.

First of all, I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem, (users who bought the laptop from the UK/ Europe specifically?) and I'm also looking for advice to guide my next course of action. Should I just return to the laptop to Amazon, send it in to Acer under the warranty or live with the problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Edit: Tried a different power brick, must of cleared something in the socket. Its fine now. Apologies.

i'm really happy with the performance of my lap, i've tried playing COD 4, it was fine and the lap didn't go hot! the game was maxed out and it played seamlessly! i'm gonna try playing battle field bad company 2 today or the day after. :)

it is a beautiful lap! the only trouble i'm facing is getting used to the keyboard which is not really centered :D

Hey i've got this little problem with Gta 4. Everythime i press down some button like accelerate or breake or turn left/right it lags for the moment i pressed button down. Theres no lags when i drive straight but even when i press down random button it does lag.
If i press random button rapidly it does alot lag but when i stop pressing buttons atall then theres no lag.
All other games run smooth with no problems, only this gta4 does this kind of tricks.

I've finished GTA IV (with OCed card, settings can be found in the first post of the thread) with the fifth patch ( 1.0.0.4).
The most recent one has introduced some changes but performance seems to be worse judging from other users' opinions. Which patch are you using?

There is a button "P" above the volume change buttons that is used for selecting some shortcut programs. I am curious to know what 5740 owners use it for and how can you change it once set to open some specific programs.

I use it to launch Outlook- my old lappy had a dedicated button for this and I got used to it. You can change the program by clocking Launch Manager icon in the start menu- and choosing another one.

Hello guys, I've had my acer aspire 5740G since febuary now. Since I've had it, i have a freezing problem. It only lasts around 2 - 3 seconds, but it's very annoying now. I've tried searching the internet for solutions but have had no luck. It's got nothing to do with how many applications i'm running, i could just be surfing the net and the mouse, screen everything will freeze and then return to normal. What seems to happen before, is the laptop fan will really quieten down, to the point where it may not be running at all. Then, all of a sudden the fan will whirl up and i can hear a noise of some sort which sounds like the HD trying to read or something? At this point is when the laptop freezes. I saw one solution i found on google, one guy said to check my event viewer, then check the system tab for any errors. Apparently i keep getting a disk error type 11. something to do with the driver detecting a controller error. I don't know if this is the problem, but it's the only lead I have at the minute.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, I too am an owner of an Acer 5740 (the 6454 model) and I have a question/issue.

Firstly, I think my laptop is running hot. When it idles, it goes around 48-52 degrees celsius (same when I'm surfing the web or working on a word document).

When I play games (such as Crysis, Modern Warfare 1 and 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2 etc), it goes up to 65-75 degrees celsius.

Furthermore, my touchpad gets hot. Sometimes too hot for me to comfortably use it.

I just want to test my temperature against yours: what temperature do you guys have when your computer idles/is under load?

And is there any way of fixing it if my laptop is running too hot?

Edit: And does anyone know why the 6454 got discontinued?

No need to worry all is cool and not harming any components of your laptop. But if you want to even lower your tempture (if it's possible) you can disable some useless startup items and services.
Type msconfig to search programs and files in start to edit startup.

    My tempture at Idling: http://img709.imageshack.us/i/88026082.png/
And when i play it usually is 65~71

btw i have the 6979 version

Good news is that temperatures achieved in prime95 are higher than real-life gaming and stress temperatures. That said if you get 40ºC in your room you live in hell ;)

    Hey downloads,

I'm not sure if you would happen to know why, but my battery won't charge when plugged in. I'm not sure its a problem with the battery itself as just the other day it was charging and it didnt drain extremely fast like you'd see in a traditional battery problem.

Another reason I think it may not be a battery problem is because Windows 7 reports it as not charging, while my sister's laptop (it's an older Aspire model) always says "charging", but her battery is borked.

So im not sure if you know anything or why this would happen. I did change some power settings recently but I can't seem to find out what to do to get it normal again.

Please let me know if you have anything. Thanks

What BIOS do you have? You need to have at least 1.16 so as not to have any battery problems- update if necessary.

At boot- when you see the Acer logo you need to press DEL or F2 (don't remember but it's written at the bottom of the screen) to enter BIOS setup. You will be able to see which version do you have there. Links to the most recent BIOS versions are available in the second post of the thread or you can find them on Acer support website on your own if you choose to do so.
Go straight to the most recent BIOS that's 1.22

    It's normal ;)

I have the i5 520M model and it ranges aroung 45-50º celcius idle (only browsing pages, email, msn, maybe a movie.

When I do some heavy gaming, it goes around 65-75º also.

Now my old HP was ranging to 80-96º on idle and 100+º on heavy load. Now that's a bit too much hot lol

Hi I have been following this thread from the starting and after reading all the comments i have bought this laptop and It's awsome. Currently I am playing left for dead on high settings and it's playing very smoothly.

Hey could you provide the software to monitor the temperatures. Also I tried to OC the card using AMD GPU tool provided in this thread and when i OC it to 620/800 it freezes. I set the engine to 620 and memory to 800 in the AMD GPU tool and click on 'SET CLOCKS' option. Is this the correct way to OC the card or am I doing it wrong cause I am not able to go beyound 610/800. Any help is appreciated.

You're doing it OK. It's possible that not every chip overclocks very good- if it doesn't go beyond 610MHz leave it like that and try to OC VRAM- it should go higher than 800MHz. This GPU is limited by memory bandwidth so if you manage to OC the memory you are going to get decent performance improvements.

I've had this laptop for about a month now and it's great. I got the 5740G-6395 which has the 520m on it. The first day I got it, I created the recovery disks and then proceeded to updated the BIOS, wipe the hard drive, partition it to install both windows and linux and then reinstall Win7 using a non-recovery install CD (for those who didn't know, you can easily backup and restore the windows activation as long as you install the same version of win7.) Then I updated all the drivers. I have not had ONE problem with it. It doesn't freeze on me. I think it stuttered ONE time but it was still loading something in the background so I forgave it. Ubuntu 10.04 runs great, too.

You should leave it alone. There is a hidden partition with Windows 7 on there for system restore purposes. You can activate it using ALT + F10 at system bootup.

You can't extend it because there is nothing left to extend. What you can do is separate it. I turned my one partition into two partitions, 290gb +- each.

Hello, I am contacting here. Because I currently have a gaming problem

The game that I play is called Command and Conquer Renegade. It's an old game made in 2003.

Anyways when I am playing it the FPS is 60 but then I get FPS freeze from 60 to 5 for a few seconds then it goes back to normal, I have pretty much tried everything but I do not seem to have any luck.

I will copy and paste here from the Renegade gaming forum what I said.

You can find out the Video link here, Yfrog Video : yfrog.com/e0sdc11678z

I recorded it with my digital camera and uploaded it to the website. I just bought the laptop about 6 days ago brand new.

I am at loss at what is causing this. I even installed windows vista on a parition hard drive and it's still doing the same thing. I had my friend to install win 7 64 bit on his desktop computer and it runs fine. so bascially it's not the OS that is causing it.

It's still doing the FPS freeze when I am on window mode and I even checked the CPU usage when the FPS freeze starts the CPU percent drops down to 2%

I have updated all the stuff on the laptop, Bios, Chipset etc.

Any help would be greatly appreicted.

The website I posted this is http://www.renegadeforums.com/index....&start=0&rid=0

My msn is [email protected] if anyone wish to add me on MSN and help me sort out this problem? Surely someone will know what to do. Could it be the laptop is ie faulty? If so how do I find out it is?.

    Thank you again.

I have tried Just Cause 2 demo, it isn't running as smooth a game is supposed to be doing. It kinda plays in like slow motion.

    Any other suggestions?

Most people have narrowed it down to either the harddrive or the harddrive controller drivers. Some people have mentioned that they see harddrive errors in the Event Log when they play games. I usually hear the harddrive spinup when it starts to freeze in a game.

There isn't a clear solution to it yet. People are still trying to figure on how to fix the freezing problem.

Aylafan, Would reinstalling the drivers help at all? Or yet remove a driver?

    Would swapping hard drive help?

I dont think anyone has tried swapping the harddrive with another one...I would be interested in hearing if that fixes the problem, but my gut feeling is it won't.

We really can't figure out what is causing the freezing, that's the sad truth of it.

My HDD is a Western Digital WDC WD5000BEVT-22A0RT0

I have the default BIOS settings, I haven't messed with them...BIOS version is the latest, 1.22. My SATA/AHCI driver version is 9.6.0.1014.

Can you try installing the chipset drivers?
From other threads many freeze issue result from improperly installed drivers.
-Intel Chipset Drivers & Intel Rapid Storage Drivers.
