Don't buy second hands one, big chance there aged too. ( not Shure for new one's )
    You can change it to USB3, but not simply, see;

Yes, I think the foam had not the stiffness anymore to put the coil in the middle.

    Hi everyone,

still using my good old 5740g from time to time and was wondering if it is possible to set a custom fancurve. Atm I have to manualy set fanspeed with RWeverything everytime I boot the Laptop which is very uncomfortable. RWeverything also only works for Windows so I cant use Linux. Usually it is enough to set very low fan speed to run my 5740g cool, as I'm not running very demanding software on it most of the time. If I dont set fanspeed manually, fan stays at off until I hit around 80-90°C. Then Fan goes off at 100% for a short while until it turns off completely again. This repeats and goes on and on.

Anyone got an idea for an easy fix for this issue? I already disassembled the Laptop and cleaned everything from dust, applied new thermal compound etc.

I've tried the new left_speaker(used condition)bought some days ago, and it's better of my old two broken, but not very very good...
Where we can buy one brand new?
In my search I found it in new condition only in China...

That good be a bit of a problem, in HIFI-forums I read things that foam used in speakers are decaying over time, as a reaction
from oxygen with the foam, so its possible that a new old stock speaker will be bad soon.
I think really new one's from China will be your best chance or to find a replacement without foam.
For me its good enough to used only the right one.

Asus X72 speaker, no foam as far I can see. Don't now about dimensions.
Expensive here, about €30 pro speaker.
Sony also, €123 per set, maybe buy a broken laptop with them.

Don't now if you have the schematics, but on page 38 you see the fan.

Pin 1 PWM connected thru 2 Ohm resistor to PWM out from chip U15a on page 39
    Pin 2, 5 and 6 to ground
Pin 3 Tacho connected on page 39 thru 10K resistor RN54 to +3,3V, so laptop will (can) not measuring fan speed.
    Pin 4 connected to +5V

Now you can cut wire in halve from pin1 ( on a place where you can connected again, if necessary )
Don't now if it needs ground or +5V PWM to run, but it's always safe to start with ground.

Touch with the FAN wire ( never use the plug wire ) to ground.
Fan will run at full speed or does nothing.
If run at full speed, you can try with a set of resistors, say 10 ohm, 20 ohm, 50 ohm, 1k ohm in serial with the wire to select the speed you like, FAN will be always on this way.
First take some 1/2 W resistors until you find the speed you like, but depends on the current the fan need ( better say you blocked with the resistor) the can run very hot, or even burn, so only touching ground when trying !!
If they don't run hot you can use this or a potential meter to adjust the speed, if the run very hot then buy from the value you need a 5 or 10 W version.

If the FAN don't run when hitting ground then try the +5v connection and do the same with the resistors as above or use +3,3V if it give good results. (somewhat more of half speed against +5V)
For both voltage's use +5V_S0 or +3,3V_S0, you don't want in any sleep state no cooling.

At last you can put a double contact switch on you laptop where you can choose for original working or always fixing speed.

Thank you for your detailed explanation. The thing is, this sounds like more work than using RWEverything and not less ;)

Yes, but not without updating the BIOS to V1.28, not Shure for i7-920/940XM.
Without BIOS update you have to press F1 every time you start-up your laptop.
    Quad Core only in 5740G.

@crazydrake It's not needed for anything. TurboBoost works without it anyway.

@newuser3 This sounds like the GPU is on its last legs. I don't think you can do anything apart from replacing the motherboard. The fact that these artifacts appear in BIOS as well indicates hardware failure.

@newuser3 I can't see any with 5650 at the moment - neither motherboards nor whole notebooks. It's often cheaper to buy a working used notebook than a new mobo.
You might consider a repair service - maybe re-balling the GPU will fix the issue.

Probably not. It was never offered with this laptop so it won't be supported by BIOS and it has a TDP higher by 10W than the strongest CPUs that were offered with it, so you would be looking at likely overheating (if it worked, which I don't think it will).

Holy Crap! I totally forgot about this forum. I missed you guys. I used to check this religiously hoping for new drivers from our SUPERMOD!! I recently revived this old laptop with a processor upgrade to an i5 560 from the 430m. With the new thermal compound, a fairly old samsung ssd, and a fresh install of windows it's almost like a new laptop. Can't seem to find ram sticks that are compatible, so I'm still stuck with the 4 gigs of ram it originally came with. Any links to a known good set would make my day. And downloads man, thanks for the years of dedication.

Much appreciated. My 5740G is exactly like yours coincidentally - Core i5 560M, Samsung SSD 830 256GB and still 4GB RAM plus an Intel 7260 upgrade (I need 802.11ac) and an extended battery.
Nothing on RAM from me though - I'm fine with 4GB (oddly).

@crazydrake Intel 7260 is probably your only choice as you need a mini-PCI Express card.
I have it and it works OK.

    Hi everyone!
I am new here. I have some questions about our acer 5740G.
My new acer had 4GB of RAM, i5-430M and ATI 5470.
First of all, I upgraded the memory to 8GB and bought Crucial 275GB 2.5 '' SATA SSD MX300.
The next step to upgrade is CPU.

Now i have temperature around 60C in normal work, and around 75-85 in stress (I do not clean heatsink yet ).
In my place i can buy those CPU:
    i5-560M ~19$
    i7-620M ~40$
    i7-720QM ~32$
    i7-740QM ~40$
    i7-820QM ~48$

Which one will be the best performance/cost? I afraid too high temperature after replace CPU, Should I? 90W supply will be enough for power consumption new CPU?

Nest quastione is aobout therm paste, which You recommend to use:

    Arctic Silver 5
    Thermal Grizzly
    Coollaboratory Liquid ULTRA

And the last one, after exchange CPU, what Can I change else in our Acer? ;)

    Thx for all reply! :)

    Welcome Karol

About CPU chance, it depends on your needs, if you do a lot of multitasking and quad core stuff or you want 16Gb RAM, QM will be your best choose.
But remember that a CPU must at least 30% faster to be noticeable in all day use, it will give you not the same experience
when moving from HDD to SSD.
I always go for the best performance, but not to every price, you only upgraded once ?
This laptop have a good cooling system, it will not over heath, but with more demanding CPU the fan will be more on.
I had temporary i740 and in normal day use 65W power brick was oké, used Arctic Silver.
I chanced to USB3 but that's a tricky one, maybe Bluetooth, a bigger battery, a better WLAN card ?

    Good luck

    Hi,

Does anyone know a way to check the brightness/lumen levels on the display? My screen is on max brightness, but it doesn't seem that bright.
The brightness controls don't seem to work on windows 10. Changing my display driver to basic microsoft driver allows me to change the brightness again, but even at 100%, it doesn't seem to bright. I don't have the adaptive brightness activated. This has happened to me before when I had the lid pulled down to a 45 degree angle. I am not sure if my screen is max brightness, but I really feel that it is dimmer than last night.

    Thanks for the help.

I suggest if you use it as portable a 10400mAh battery that ensure in the first time at least 5-6 hours, aesthetically this is bigger but I prefer more autonomy.
The statistics are: the stock battery lifetime is 3years with a max of 2hours when it healt is 100%, so when the healt decrease at 30%(last year) you can't use it as a portable because you have 30-40mins of autonomy
the 10400mAh have also a 3years lifetime but you have 6hours when healt is 100% and 2hours when healt is 30%
the numbers are approximate, but the logic is near what happen in real

    Since I have installed win10(I have the possibility of use win7) I almost always used it...(95% win10, 5% win7)
Peraphs for this laptop it's better win7(officially supported until 2019), but if you prefer win10 you will not have more problems(but prepare you for have it) which depend of your use
for monitoring themperature use a program like "coretemp", don't block the air intakes, and use a base like this: http://notebookitalia.it/images/stories/microsoft_accessori_2009/microsoft_base_raffreddante_2.jpg also unplugged and your themperature will be always under 60celsius

In an effort to extend the life of my laptop I've purchased one of these from the Chinese retailer Bangood. I'll post results when it arrives in a month or so. Really interesting product, though you lose your wifi card to install it. Basically it's an external graphics adapter that connects through the pcie connection your WiFi card lives in. My inner nerd couldn't resist.

Should note that it looks like only an Nvidia card will display to the laptop screen though. Amd will need an external monitor.

What are the difficulties you face with the ram? Any 1.5V DDR3 SODIMM will work fine. I found hynix 4GB and just bought Samsung 4GB for 15 EUR. Both are 1333MHz but are working fine in dual channel with i5-560m at 1066MHz

On another note, has anyone tried and succeeded in installing mini PCI-e SSD into the spare slot (not the WiFi one)? Thanks in advance.

Very nice find !! I never thought the will make something like this.
I'm very curios if it will work, let us now !
But there are some things you must now,

phoenix222 did a same sort of thing in the past in another way but was unable to get any video out of the graphics card, see
page 508 #5071 (Permalink didn't seem to work?), I think this will be the hardest part.

Mini-PCIe support only PCIe - X1, so you have to put in a very fast card, but who knows ?

Don't think our laptop support eGPU, so you always have to connect to external monitor.

The good news however, we have two Mini-PCIe slots, so you not have to remove Wlan.

Good luck and let us now !!!

Never heard of mini PCI-e SSD, It's not the same as mini-Sata if you where Thinking that.
And if you connect a drive on mini PCI-e, it must have a BIOS of it's one if you will boot from it.

Edit: About the RAM, some type's are giving problems, especially 1600Mhz type's.

Then I got it all wrong. There were many ads for mini PCIe SSDs, but as you said they also state mSATA. I am guessing that our second port doesn't support that since it was designed probably for a 3G modem.

There are these however, which state miniPCIe interface, but not much else.

Maybe your right, but like you say specs from this drives give not complete info, see
    https://superuser.com/questions/688...tween-mini-pcie-and-msata-interfaces-and-ssds
But I now for Shure there must be an Sata controller chip integrated on SSD will it work on mini PCIe and if needed external 5V
    connection, see page 591 #5902 and #5904

And no, both sloths are free to use, I have a mini PCIe USB3 card in it.
Did some experience with a mini PCIe Sata3 controller in it, but there was no way to boot from it, see page 542 #5416
So, best thing is to put a second drive in DVD drive bay.
