There is an acer model 5741G. Is it the same with 5740? As in, are they in the same series or something like that. I looked around and acer has a lot of numbers...

5741G is the chassis refresh. It seems that it will have models with similar internal hardware components, but the casing has been slightly redesigned into a more rectangular shell, rather than the rounded one the 5740G currently has. Otherwise, people say things like the keyboard and screen are still the same.

5741G also has 3 USB port instead of 4 found on 5740G and the more powerful GPU in it is nVidia GT330 that's a good deal slower than HD5650 (in games as 3D Mark scores are very similar)

Hi there downloads...sorry for the delayed reply... Like you predicted, the green dots appear only when power play is enabled and when the GPU frequency spikes. Also, the dots don't appear when I'm using the PowerPlay in the "Maximize Battery" mode... Here's a snip of my lappy's GPUZ & CPUZ:

    Graphics Card.gif
    cpuz.PNG

As you suggested, I downloaded and installed the new Catalyst but the artifacting continues with PowerPlay on. I might have downloaded the wrong version... The setup file's version is 3.0.765.0 and the filename is "10-3_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc". Did I get it right?

Well, dunno if it helps, but here are my GPU/CPU-Z snaps. Maybe there's some number on it that could help you figure it out?

Driver version is all right however it might be worth it to fully uninstall and maybe clean the system (with some kind of driver cleaner tool) before installing the new one to be sure that nothing (including files and registry settings) is left of the old one. Another option that was unavailable back when I first posted is new 1.22 BIOS that updates VBIOS for ATI cards.
I recommend you try it- download form Acer support (link also provided in the second post of the thread)

Howdy, I've a pretty stupid question, hope someone can help!

According to DXDiag my BIOS version is 1.00, is this accurate? If so, I'm assuming it's an old version. Is it dangerous/difficult at all to update the BIOS? Also, what improvements would I get exactly for updating the BIOS?

    Thanks!

    hey guys,

i have been overclocking the 5650 @ 5730 clocks now.

just wondering if you guys know if the computer protectively downclocks the GPU during gaming or stability tests to protect itself from possible overheating

Hi guys, I just joined the forum. I recently bought the Acer 5740G and decided to wipe it to get rid of the factory clutter software, I recently discovered the webcam is not as good as it was when I first used it. The "Webcam Optimizer" doesn't seem to work anymore and comes across a little dark.

Is there a special driver I would need to have it at optimal levels?

    Thanks in advance.

No. DXDiag is not accurate. It's not difficult to update BIOS- you should use at least 1.16 due to potential battery problems it resolves but since 1.22 contains 1.16 and VBIOS update go right to 1.22

It would throttle if needed but that would probably occur at above 90*C so no way are you going to see that happening as this notebook barely gets over 70*C

Camera driver is windows default not vendor specific but you may try to install an application for camera- maybe it adds some settings.
I will update the second post of the thread with the most recent version of Chicony application soon.

AMD GPU Clock Tool should work. Can't help you with the exact freqs as I have a HD5650.

    Chicony WebCam Application 1.1.149.115

Latest driver I could find, I just installed it I don't know if it would help my situation, I shall test it later. I thought I'd pass the link on anyway.

Take a look at the second post of the thread- there are several more updates there.
BTW what's the non-beep ;) version of the Realtek driver? It's probably not the driver itself but some specific settings hence it may be possible to mod inf file to disable it.

The current driver I have at the minute is the HD Audio Device from Microsoft, Version 1.01.7600.16385. I tried alot of the drivers specifically for acers laptops, they all had the AC beep, I tried modding it too and still no change.
So, I decided to use a different driver all together.

Just had a look at the new webcam app, seems to be working well, though I dont think it is as vivid and as colorful as I remember it to be.

Hmm, thinking of possibly overclocking, looking at AMD CPU Clock Tool. Debating whether to bring the engine and memory clock up.

    Currently:

    Engine 156.99MHz
    Memory clock 199.96MHz

These are just 2D clocks. Default 3D clocks for 5470 are 750 MHz core and 800MHz memory so any overclocking starts above these values.

If you do do any overclocking, could you tell me what sort of performance increase you get? :p

On my 5470 I only start to notice a very minor performance increase after about 790/840 mhz.

    Hi Downloads,

it seems you have extensive knowledge about this stuff.

Question: I own the 5740g-6979 version from newegg. It comes with the i5 430m and the HD 5650. 4gb of DDR3 1066mhz ram. What do you think will be good settings to overclock to, and how? using AMD tool? Also, am I correct in assuming it's not possible to OC the CPU?

Also what are some good temps that i should be trying to stay under for both CPU and GPU? And is it any safer to overclock past the values that you did?

No surprise there- 790/840 is barely higher than default so you can't expect anything more than a minor increase in performance.
Memory is unlikely to go above 900MHz (it may go higher but it also may not- don't expect it though) I've seen the core on this card in the same notebook work fine at 820MHz. Personally I would expect it to work fine at 860-870MHz.
Also remember that 3DMark06 is no good for stability testing- try Crysis benchamark, Call of Juarez benchmark or play GTA IV. 3DMark06 is DX9 based with some DX9.0c (shader model 3) and a lot of DX9.0b (shader model 2) so it's quite obsolete and doesn't have a lot of HDR/postprocessing effects.
Use AMD GPU Clock Tool. 650/800 meaning the HD5730 clocks are pretty much guaranteed to work. You don't have to worry about temperatures- cooling system is good enough- you should be somewhere close to 70*C for GPU.
You may be able to OC more than I did if you are lucky- I've seen three guys go above 700MHz for core and few more above 1000MHz for memory but my system is not stable higher frequencies.

OK. ATI cards have a feature called Poweplay that automatically downclocks the GPU and memory when you are not playing games or doing other GPU stressing tasks (like HD video decoding)
So your card has default 3D clocks of 750MHz core and 800MHz memory and when extra power is not needed the GPU automatically downclocks to 2D clocks- in your case 157MHz core and 200MHz memory.
When you launch AMD GPU Clock tool you are obviously in 2D mode- no game or 3D application running- so you AMD GPU clock shows you the current frequencies- that is 2D ones.
If you want to OC you need to OC starting from the 3D level- so you type in i.e. 790MHz for core and 850MHz memory- that's overclocking.
Keep in mind that when you manually type in some frequencies these are going to stick until you restart your notebook so after you are finished with gaming it would be wise to use "restore default clocks" in AMD GPU clock Tool- otherwise the card will stay in OCed 3D mode instead of downclocking to 157/200 2D mode.

Just make sure that it's definitely stable- run some Furmark to monitor temperatures and some demanding games and benchmarks.
TDP of HD4570 is 13W and up to 19W for HD5650. Overclocked HD5650 could be close to 26W- the TDP of HD5730.
So if this cooling system can handle 26W from the GPU it surely can handle 13W + OC from HD5470.
It seems your only potential problem is stability of the GPU- or rather lack of it- if voltages are too low for your OC.
Just be thorough and test it to confirm it's perfectly stable and you should be good to go.

We've had this laptop for two weeks but already one of the letter keys on the keyboard is coming loose. It pops up at the front so only the rear of the key is attached as though it was on a hinge lifting up at the front of the key. I've tried pushing it down into place but it will just become detached at the front again after a few key presses. Everything else about this computer is just wonderful

Is there a special way of putting the key back on? Really disappointing after just a couple of weeks use!

    Hi guys,

I have had this NB with configuration i5+HD5650 for 14 days but I think there is a problem with CPU overheating on my machine.
The FAN during web browsing switch on every 3 or 5 minutes, when the CPU reach 52°C. I mean the huge fan noise. Then the temperature go dawn (46°C).
How often the fun is switched on during web browsing on your machines?

Thanks a lot for your reply

No problem here, the fan is supposed to act this way to keep the notebook cool so it switches on/off quite often. There's no overheating obviously as you can see from the temperatures you provided- these are normal.
I don't know how many notebooks have you owned but that fan is pretty silent so if you call that a "huge noise" you should be glad you bought this notebook not something not considered silent ;) - that's unless there is some kind of malfunction regarding your fan but that's very unlikely.

I totally agree, I have worked with a lot of laptops over the years (This being the first I own) majority of the time I work on a PC but I got the laptop for work related reasons. and I honestly was surprised at how quiet it was. I didn't look for a quiet one I was looking for one with a good ability to carry a work load. I was expecting it to be louder to be honest.

Subject changer o_O anyone found the latest Chipset for this laptop?

I just got this laptop a few days ago. I have had no troubles with the laptop except for a minor annoyance with the audio jack for headphones or speakers. When I use the port to connect speakers or headphones, I end up with a small buzzing sound that seems like mild interference coming through the audio port. Has anyone else seen this happen on their 5740G?

I don't get it. What do you mean?

Basically you can't OC the CPU. 89*C is quite hot- probably not dangerous but still hot. I got up to 75*C after several hours of GTA IV with 670/900 and since the core is generating most heat we should be pretty close.

Someone already reported it somewhere in this thread (or the other one about artifacts) if I'm not mistaken.

I think the issue is from interference from inside the machine - either the gpu or cpu - that is making the buzzing noise in my headphones. This only happens when I run 3d programs such as games.

what do you have wired into the laptop when experiencing buzzing noise?(ethernet, cooler, external devices etc)
do you have other things plugged into your powerbar?
    ( a fan/heater for example or TV?)

try having only the laptop plugged into the powerbar with no other peripherals see if this does it, it may also be due to a poor quality powerbrick.

even try running the laptop on battery see if this helps.

i used to have this problem on another laptop it was due to having poor grounding at the old place i lived in resulting in a number of devices experiencing "feedback" and interferinf with each other, since they were all on the same system

    Hello All,

First time poster on this forum and first time owner of a laptop. I have had the laptop for a day and i simply love it. There are a lot of questions lurking in my head and i hope that many enthusiasts will assist me and enlighten me.

I have the 640GB harddisk which i tried to shrink and create a new partition. Somehow the system is restricting the amount by which :C can be shrunk. The max i could shrink was to ~250GB not any less. From convenience and space point of view i wanted my new partition :E to be around 500GB and C: to be around 80GB. Is there any easy way to accomplish this?

My laptop seems to be loaded with a lot of applications/programs some of which are for 30 day or 60 day trial period and some are there for good. Is there any link where i can find the usage of these programs?

Sorry for being naive, but i am not very experienced with own laptops.

Had the laptop for 3 days. No issues till now. but then, I did not run any heavy apps( games) on this. played only a few movies. Had a problem with the internet connection at home. Once I get my net connection i will start my updates/heavy apps. The best thing of this notebook which I like is the cooling system.
My old hpdv6226 used to be so hot that I was tempted more than once to break an egg on the palmrest ;) .
Will report back any problems when I get
speacial thanks to the thread starter...really
