Your new DDR3-1333 is running at DDR3-1066 (533MHz) speed. Your CPU-Z\Memory tab confirmed this ( DRAM Frequency). What you see in CPU-Z\SPD tab is the maximum bandwidth ( Max Bandwidth) the DDR3-1333 module can support. Meaning the DDR3-1333 module can support up to 667MHz but due to processor compatibility, it only running in DDR3-1066 (533MHz) speed.

Check CPU usage during tests, malware/viruses can affect battery time.
If you want to clean your laptop without voiding the warranty send it to Acer.
Battery wear level is suspicious - try formatting it by following one of the tutorials found on the Internet (dunno if it really works but worth trying)

I used the auto detect tool from ATI and it downloaded 11-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe. What does the ocl thing at the end mean? The ones downloads gives links to are with out the "ocl" at the end. What is the difference and which are better for our laptop?

Guys, I was messing around to calibrate my battery and I have a problem now. I think when I typed power (supposed to have hit power options) into search I got a battery meter on the taskbar.

You can now see it behind the bar but when I play a video it shows up. I took some screenshots.

Anyone know how to get rid of it?

No idea but while we're talking battery- mine has reached wear level of 48% which is ridiculous but than again it's Sony.
I have an old laptop that I keep just-in-case- 6 years old with Sanyo battery and it's reached 50% wear too.
There's some difference between having half of the battery gone in less than 18 months an the same thing happening in almost 6 years.

I'm going to have to look at possible replacement batteries and consider if it's even worth it at this point.

It may not be real wear level if you haven't fully drained it (aka re-calibrated).
    What battery do you have?

It used to be until recently- new 3830/4830/5830 series has serious issues with Panasonic but that doesn't concern 5740G.
I presume there's going to be one hell of a difference between your 15 month old Panasonic and my 15 months old Sony battery.

Hello everybody, thanks for all your inputs (read upto page 35so far), especially Download.
I just ordered a pair of 4GB Ram chips, and wanted to ask if there is absolutely no point in installing them. I dont run any intense processes (autocad would be the heaviest i guess) Should I just sell them and be happy with the factory installed 4GB?
Thanks again (btw I wrote a whole song and dance praising u guys and this laptop but pressed the wrong button)

My battery is made by Simplo (never heard that before) and my wear level is 3% after 1 1/2 years, I have to admit that I not use it that much...just put in in when I go on vacation. So...most of the time my battery sleeps in the fridge with 40% charge.

Same battery, 11% wear level after 1 year of using (89% of design capacity). I used to have it inserted all the time, even when my laptop is on AC power. I'm stupidly simply using it.

It's my second laptop with such a good battery condition and I wonder whether you are breaking it by keeping in fridge with ~50% discharge level... Maybe not :p

    @newuser3

I don't use TurboBoost monitor anymore- it's not required to make TurboBoost work so unless you want the widget on-screen to see when it engages you can safely uninstall it.
The same goes for Intel Rapid Storage- the most important thing is the driver, all those apps and services that start with it (there are two) can be disabled.

Mweh, looks like you'll have to almost completly disassemble your laptop, take apart cooling system and clean it, and then apply new thermal compound.

If you don't want to loose warranty by screwing sth up, give your laptop to Acer and they'll fix that for you.

Anyone know if we can enable ATI Overdrive in our mobility drivers?I found a thread for Alienware M15x on this forum with some regs that have to be edited to enable it.The thing is that i don't have those regs(not the whole part of the regs). So can we enable ATI Overdrive for our laptop model?

LMFAO, I though that you are looking for ATI LCD overdrive xD

My mistake... anyway: try to create registry entries if you want - you shouldn't break anything down. Personally I am using AMD Gpu clock tool for OC'ing. Setting frequencies manually can be annoying but it quickly becomes one's routine before launching any demanding game :p.

If you find out - share it with us, please :)

    Hey all.

I'd like to point out that this laptop is great exept for 1 thing.

It's HDD cooling method is bad, on average i's tempture is ~44...52 -> (using ashampoo hdd control) <- great program with quiethdd capabilities.

Which means it will wear out faster. There are also other problems like it's constantly spinning up and then down causing system lag.

2 years after purchase and i've got quite alot bad sectors already.
It's about time to replace it because this slow HDD is dragging it's capabilities down.

Now i'm not really sure but if i put 10k rpm hdd in it, is it gonna be in normal working tempture or it's gonna work in critical tempture?

Are there 10k notebook HDDs? Or did you mean 7200rpm?
Anyway- my Hitachi's working temp is 41-43*C and after over 7000 hours of operation is has no issues at all.
That's why I suspect it may be the HDD that's to blame in your case.
Upgrade to a 7200rpm and you'll probably see lower temps than with your soon-to-be-dead 5400rpm.
    BTW is it WD drive?

Hey i've got a problem lately that i can't solve by myself.

It's that i have tiny lag in every game that i have. In game 1 seconds i can play then 0.5 seconds it lags, then again i get smooth 1 seconds and 0.5 second lag again. And when i return to already explored area it won't lag. but it happends when i'm in new areas. It didn't happen before.

Problems begun when i reformated laptop. (got infected by this new boot worm)

It has latest windows updates, latest ati catalyst driver (i also tried the one on acer support forum 2009 version).
Hdd is set to max performance, it's not anti-virus, and power option is set to Max performance. CPU usage at idle is ~1...0% so no backround programs.

There must be something off with the Gpu and i can't figure out :(

Edit: wow the problem is gone after i uninstalled eset smart security. It was probly scanning the game files and aready slow hdd couldn't handle the read pressure.

Those kind of little stutters are mostly caused by HDD.And as you stated the AV scanning the game files(when in new areas) put even more load to the HDD.About the constantly spinning up and down problem you can try quietHDD program and disable the drive APM.This will disable the insanely low timeout for parking of the hdd heads. For me it was 5 sec. That meant that every 5 sec of no activity the hdd parked the heads and when you get hdd activity you get lag and stutter until they unpark.Personally i used the WD wdidle3.exe under DOS to lower the timeout to 300 sec(this was the maximum) and now i don't get stutters and HDD lag. This also reduced the Load Cycle Count drastically(the vendor gives a guarantee of about 300k load cycle count events before failure).

Seems like a really useful program but unfortunately it tells me it's not compability with my windows version and can't run it :/

Perament fix for the hdd problem would be nice, since tierd of manually having to use quiethdd.

wdidle3.exe doesn't run in Windows. You boot it up from a floppy disk or USB drive in DOS mode and type in commands. You can Google the commands online.

    hey guys

thanks for all you great advice!! it has been really helpfull for a while now. But I have a couple of questions that I really need answered:

1)there is something wrong with my battery. It has been heating up to so much that it makes my computer shut down. Is there any way I can solve this? I also want to see how much my battery has worn out and want to re-calibrate it. with which program can I do these.

    2) my ram usage is always around %45-55. is this high? if yes how can I decrease it? because I think it effects my gaming and computer speed.

    thanks in advance
