    SSD installed.
I cloned me HDD with acronis true image home and then i restarted using for the first time ssd as my main drive.
The thing is that i got a read error no matter how many times i tried to reboot, repair disk etc.
After a while i gave up, i put my old hdd in and started working.
When i had time i plugged in the ssd again with the intention of installing windows 8, as i was sure that a fresh install is going to be needed in order for my ssd to work.
Unfortunately there was a problem again as during the installation i was asked for a serial for windows 8.
When downloading i didnt notice any serials mentioned and the one from my windows 7 install didnt work.
So i tried repair disk from windows 8 cd and for once more i got the message that it can not be fixed.
So i rebooted and for no reason it started normaly booting the cloned windows 7 installation.
    No idea what changed.
The speed is good and im happy with performance.
My windows index fro hdd drive went up from 5.9 to 7.7
I will try to get 8gb ram and that was preety much it as gpu is on the mobo.

Does it make any sence to look for 1600Mhz ram or higher?
Can the laptop run at this frequency or they clocks will be dicreased?

I have a problem with temperature lately and i want to open my laptop and clear the fan. My previous acer laptop had a cap with 3 screws. I could easily open it and clear the fan. With this model though (5942g) there is no cap =/. I tried to remove all the screws and open the bottome of the laptop but i can't open it. Something is holding the bottom and i can't find it. Has anyone tried to remove the bottom of this specific laptop or find another way to clean the fan? (I tried to clean it with air but it is not that good)

To reach the fan you have to go deep.
It is not only one cap away..
Look for a service manual and good luck...

Corsair Vengeance 8Gb is on the way.
Can our laptop support 16 Gb?
    ----------------------------
Ram installed with no problems at all.
Performance index for ram jumped to 7.4 now.

    Hi again.
I need advice/help, do we gain performance by installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver (previously known as Intel matrix storage manager) or in other words do we loose performance by not having it installed? I was using intel_rst_11.0.0.1032whql version and my 5942 was slow both on startup and shutdown, Intel Turbo Boost would not start for 30+ sec and my Windows event viwer was full of error messages wich stopped when I uninstalled IntelRST. I installed Windows 7 x64 freshly and Rapid storage driver, same problem again as before with it.. So I'm gonna reinstall win again with out it and check out if any of you have any advice.
I play a lot of games so that's why i'm concerned about performance It took me big chunk of time to figure out what was causing problems on my system

    Cheers

I have IRST installed and i havent seen any problems or slowdowns with it.
    Also, no error messages.
On the other hand i doubt that we gain anything much, speed tests didnt show anything.

Well, gents, allow me to start by introducing: My name is Rafael, and I'm the owner of this model, evidently. I'm from Brazil, but I live in Ireland. I'm also working on a contract in Ethiopia right now (and this is relevant because I have as much access to hardware and spare parts as the moon has access to wildlife). I like videogames. =)

Well, with that out of the way, I've been lurking this topic for quite a while, and googling the hell out of the internet to solve my problem. My laptop is overheating. Drastically. I used to be able to play games on it just fine, until about 3 months ago, when it started overheating. Games get laggy, sound goes nuts, you get the idea. I've updated the ATI drivers, tested the fan (I thought it had died on me, turns out it hasn't). Tried using MSI Afterburner, SpeedFan and Argus Monitor to set the fan speed to 100%. They say it is at 100%, but it doesn't feel it's 100%. Mainly because my core temps never drop below 60, and my GPU never drops below 50, even when idle!

I've tried about everything. I opened the laptop, cleaned it up. Did not change a thing. I got into a fight with my PC to remove the BIOS password, did that, and the goddarn thing has no option for fan control. So, in short, I'm about as hot as the computer itself, holding the urge to just throw it out the window and get a new one. Which is also not an option as they have nothing of the sorts around here.

Oh, and I also have that lovely, excellent and distinctive guide from Tim's website. Helped me lots.

Anyways, that's the info I have. If you guys need any further information, just as and I'll find a way to provide (as long as it's not my credit card password). Thanks in advance for the help.

Well I meant to ask for a credit card number but with that out of the question I have another one. ;)
Since you have cleaned it and the fan works I assume both these can be ignored.

Did you re-paste it with a new thermal compound?
Also is the GPU temperature very high too?

Assuming the thermal paste is fine, the radiator is clean and the fan is working- the heatpipe might be broken (that is unlikely but happens sometimes and when the liquid spills there's nothing to vapor/condensate so it doesn't work anymore).

It's also possible that Ethiopia is to blame. What's the ambient temperature? What's the GPU temp at idle? And the highest temperature CPU achieves?

Acer Aspire 5942G Windows 8 BIO PROTECTION

I have just upgraded to Windows 8 Pro and I'm having problems getting the Bio Protection / fingerprint logon to work properly.

Anyone had the problem themselves and solved it?

I upgraded from W7 and all seemed well except I had to 'logon' twice, PBA (Pre-Boot Authentication) fingerprint logon then Windows logon, previously under W7 PBA logon took me straight through to desktop.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing, did not help, I tried uninstalling and installing a later version 6.2.56, did not help, I have 'upgraded' to the latest version I can find:

    ABOUT shows:
    Acer Bio Protection // 6.5.76 ID796 // Egis-Tec Sensor

As usual ACER help is pretty poor with updates for Drivers etc, you can go to Driver support and pretty much nothing has changed since the drivers that came with the laptop.

Hi, I have faulty fan on my 5942g and where I live there is no store with spare parts like that. Im just wondering if anyone can point me in to right direction about fan specifications that I shold know before trying to finde one that fits this model. I'll buy it over eBay. Voltages, number of pin connectors etc?
I don't need housing for it. Any help is much appreciated and sorry for bad english, I don't know the correct words for parts of the fan
