Hi guys. Just a quick question.

The 8930g has 2 Drives, one is 329GB and in mine the other is 150GB. I bought it in Japan.

What's the biggest Drive I can replace the 150GB with?

I believe you have a 500 that is partitioned.

    2 Drives, 1= 320 GB (ST9020320A ATA) and the other a 150 GB(WDC WD1600BEVT - 22ZCT0 ATA).
At least that's how we get here in Japan. It's not 1 500GB drive. According to Partition Magic anyway.

So if I wanted to replace the smaller one, how big can I go? Is there a limit?

I can get a 500GB drive pretty cheaply over here.

The lost 10gb of your Western Digital 160gb drive is your PQSERVICE partition, I believe. You should be able to put another 500gb drive in your system in place of the smaller drive if you want to. The only limit to drive size should be that 500gb drives are the largest they make for laptops. If speed is a priority, I would get a 320gb 7200rpm drive for the boot drive. I think that is the largest size for that speed drive. I would use an imaging utility to clone the drive so I wouldn't lose the recovery partition while changing drives.

Thanks for the reply. The bigger drive is my primary. The smaller one is just used for media stuff. I'll replace it next month.

    It's a great machine!

New bios v1.10 has been released.

    ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_8930/bios/

Okay, I took the plunge and performed the bios update too v1.10, as you can see below it is now reporting correctly in cpu-z (~533 MHz) other than the DDR2 part. Yes, for those of you who noticed by the Send Feedback in the cpu-z images, I updated bios in Windows 7 with the supplied WinFlash utility in Vista compatibiliy mode and ran as Administrator.

I'm waiting till mid summer so I get the Windows 7 coupon but I love the 8930 7665 which is now a gaming machine. It comes with a quad core processor 2.0 4 gigs ram 500 gig hd Nvidia 9700 blu-ray for 1799 at Newegg or you can get the 2.53 core duo with 320 gig hd Nvidia 9600 fro 1599. My Acer AS 9810 is still performing great so I can afford to wait.

Hey guys, just a quick question for you 8930g owners. Do you guys have any LCD Bleed? I purchased one from NewEgg for my wife's B-Day (which is tomorrow, the 27th) and noticed right off while checking it out that there is substantial bleeding. I played around with the contrast settings & the angle of the screen (while watching Rambo on blu-ray & while in windows) and couldn't really find a position that was acceptable. Perhaps I'm too anal, but I thought I'd ask you guys if you had any issues before I went off for an RMA. I'll post pictures after I can snag it out of her hands. =) If ya'll have any pictures of your 8930g while in a dark scene I'd appreciate it for comparison sake.

try to reinstall the 1.10 bios. i dont think 1.05 is availible on the site.

or restore to factory defaults? not sure if that resets the bios

I have read this post and have a similar problem I believe. My laptop had Vista Premium installed and worked well with Acer Empowering Technology. Load.I installed Vista Ultimate 32 bit and it took away my Acer softwar and all the drivers. I have tried Alt F10 to no avail. Any suggestions. do not have an erecovery disc.

When you install an operating system other than the one acer supplies you (I.E. restoring using the recovery disk or recovery partition), this then disables the ALT+F10 function. The reason is this overwrites the ACER MBR (master boot record) which enables the ALT+F10 feature. Now you may be able to restore the ACER MBR by following the instructions below found on another website:

If your having problems finding drivers and the empowerment technology, you can find everything you need here for the 8930, this is acers europe site, and all the drivers on here should work with vista ultimate:

    Hello!

I'm a newbie here as well who is seriously looking into this laptop (As well as the Sony VAIO FW and AW series). My question to you guys is, have any of you guys been able to actually see this laptop in person in a retail store? I've had the opportunity to see the Sony VAIOs in person, but not the Acer....and I can't find out where that laptop is sold. Of course I can just purchase it online, but I'd like to actually get to play with the laptop first before I decide to make the plunge.

    Thanks guys.

You upgrade your bios at your own risk, if it goes wrong your laptop is toast.

If there's nothing wrong with your laptop, and your unsure about doing it, then maybe it's not worth doing it.

Also, make a backup of the bios before you flash it. If you do it in windows and it doesn't complete, don't turn the laptop off, try and revert to the backup or flash it again.

    Just a thought.......
Unless a newer Bios solves specific problems you are experiencing with your computer....or if it adds increased functionality to your system that you want/need......IE: increased DDR2 capability, fixes temperature problems etc.
Consider leaving your current Bios as it is.

Also, some notebooks require Bios flashing in the order that the upgraded Bios were released.
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable with your specific notebook can comment further on this.

I have experienced one bad bios flash that required me to flash the notebook three times (each time from Post-not a Windows based flash program) before it would complete.

Needless to say I was sweating Bullets even though I had other systems (all desktop) this was my only good laptop and did not want to turn it into a brick. In this case, I lucked out.

Definitely follow the suggestions of the earlier poster if you do flash....could well save you some grief. And when you do flash....make sure you are plugged into power!

And with all that said, I also can say I have flashed the bios of all my other systems several times with no problems.

If your running a 32bit version of vista, you have to do a clean install, you can't upgrade from 32bit to 64, it's impossible.

So if you did install 64 bit, you would have to reinstall all of the acer stuff, programs you have and drivers.

Just got the as8930-6058. I'm pretty impressed BUT; is the motherboard generic for all 8930 models, and can I upgrade the Dual core to a Quad core? What is the fastest CPU this board will take? What is the most mother board RAM I can put in? What is involved in uping the 512MB on the NVidia 9600 GPU to the allowable 2303MB? --And can I do that myself?

Anyone know of any system performance tweaks? Overclocking potentials?
3dMark was somewhere around 5200 and I want more. lol :D

So.... I'm looking for some feedback from someone who actually owns an 8930-7665 Quad core machine.

There aren't any reviews yet of these and I'm looking for an honest opinion before I lay down the cash for one.

I'm debating whether or not to get the 8930-7665 or an HP HDX 18t quad.

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

After researching for 9 hours now I don't have much hair left to pull out.
I am trying to overclock the nvidia 9600m gt in my acer 8930-6058. I have the latest Insyde mainboard bios v1.10. I have downloaded NibiTor (Won't tell me squat). I have tried EVGA (no joy). I have tried nvFlash (still nothing). I have downloaded an iso image of both 98se boot cd and DOS boot cd to try these tools in a non 64 bit environment (I'm running Vista home 64) and the system refuses to boot those CDs. I'm not a noob, I'm a former network engineer so this is starting to bruise my ego. MB integrated video bios? ?

I know this can be done cuz I was able to get halfway there (modding speeds with EVGA) but the system wouldn't reboot afterwards without using the no-plug Battery-pull reset trick.

    HEEEELLLLLP!!!!!!

    8930-6058 18.4 inch display :D :D :D
    9600m GPU with only a T5800 and I'm just amazed!!! :D  :D  ;)

Finaly figured it out. Was the crappy burning documentation or lack thereof that came with the Super\multi burner which kept making coasters instead of bootable disks. Ended up using HPs bootable thumbdrive method to boot to Win98/DOS environment, then used nvFlash to backup the original 9600m bios. Booted back into Vista and modded the bios to overclock with NiBiTor. Then booted back into the thumb drive to flash the modded bios with nvFlash again. ;)

    Very sweet 3DMark score of 6875pts for nVidia9600m on a T5800 Processor :D

In case anyone is wondering; I would never run with these settings. Too scary for crash potential.
I'm just going after the 3DMark record for the T5800 Processor with nvidia 9600m.

I updated the bios to 1.10 here everything seems fine. Except I ran Cpu-z it still shows dram frequency as 400mhz. Also the same in EVEREST. Strangely mine shows type DDR3 though, unlike the screenshot that was posted earlier here by a different member. Also the bios windows flasher has no backup feature so be careful!

I found another problem with the new bios on my system. When i was running on battery and closed my lid my system shut off. Even though i have it set to do nothing. And when I started it up the next day it said there was a shutdown problem. I haven't tried the sleep/resume functions yet to see if something is affected there as i run on ac power most of the time. I wonder if this bios is not fully made for 8930G as my system is the G version. Anyone know what the G version means anyway..

Hello everyone, I have a question, since there are 14 pages of posts in this forum and everyone seems to obiously have or own one of these laptops, i figure this would be the place to ask :)

    Acer Aspire 8930G-6448 (of course)
The hard drive as stated by many ppl here is a 320GB hard drive, which is partitioned into two 140GB drives. I was wondering, if by any chance i could use the Acer recovery discs to return this laptop to its factory state (with the OS reinstalled, vista ultimate 64-bit, all its drivers, etc.. garbage programs not a problem, they can be removed), but only making one change to its factory condition:: the partitions being REMOVED and changed as loading into ONE 320GB Drive, since using 2 partitions, i end up LOSING about 60GB of availalbe space where-as using ONE 320GB partition, normally only about 5-10GB is lost (for cache).

Basically the quick version: i want to use factory discs to restore, keeping everything the lappy comes with, but only having one partition rather than two. Is this possible?? i'd like to make sure before i LOSE EVERYTHING just to be disappointed lol, that would suck coz it takes forever.

My email is in my profile i believe, if not, go to my homepage and use the contact us link to send me a reply if anyone knows.

    Thanks,
    DevilzEye

EDIT: i'm also looking for a service manual for this model if anyone knows where one is located online (in case i have to replace hardware in the future)

it will come back with the partiions thats how its program
actually you have 1 (15gb)partition 1(3.54gb) that leaves you with C: that is roughly (124gb) the previous two are hidden then you have D: which is (144gb)

here is the good thing I did a clean install and merge the two to one which gives me a total of 279.5gb to install vista business which is light and funtional notice I didnot have my full 320 gb that because the previous two partition are still hidden, I leave them intact just incase I need to restore to factory setting.

but any ways once you use the recovery disk you will get the default factory setting

what you could create your own imaage of your pc and set the parameters like what to do with hard drive

ps does the bluetooth work on your laptop,

i dont remember if i have proile email on this page, its almost 3 am and i'm tired so use the contact page on my web to send me a reply

see the external enclosure is a bit luggish to cart around as i work in a paper mill, and i take my laptop with me to play games during my many breaks at work (if we're lucky enough), and yes i did notice the second hard drive bay that was SATA, i was thinking about buying a 320GB 7200RPM drive as an added storage, but i would only need it if i couldn't remove the partitions. What i did was i used Macrium Reflect free edition to create an Image of my hard drive, and i took the hard drive out of my Dell Studio 1735 and put it in my Aspire as a secondary to store the image file of my HDD. After using a vista disc to delete the partitions and combine them into like you said, a 279GB partition, i restored the image from the Dell HDD, then removed the Second drive and all is perfect now :D had to re-install my Steam software though, and that was all so far, and everything else is just exactly how i left it. I will keep this Macrium for anyone local who wants me to replace their hard drive as this program works very fast, and its reliable. Only took me about 2 hours to complete a 110GB image (creating and restoring the image).

And yes nattygreg, my bluetooth does work because i use it with my LG Dare cell phone with file transfer, and i also have a Microsoft Bluetooth notebook mouse 5000 OEM and it works flawlessly even for games :D

But an external enclusure to lug around with this lappy, eh... laptop is heavy enough, add an external HDD with that and thats more added weight (externals weigh almost 3x as an internal, plus the power cord, data cord, etc..)

    Hi,

Anyone knows how to get the bluetooth on as a default, I use a bluetooth mouse and that would save me switching and waiting for the bluetooth to come alive :)

    Thanks in advance,

    Serge

Hi, as I've just purchased one of these laptops I did the bios upgrade becuase it was running the memory slow and now it reports the speed the memory should be running at for the P8500 CPU.

Strange that the bios update did not fix that for me. I've tried flashing it twice. Do you have a Aspire 8930 or 8930G? Also under mainboard what week does it show yours mine says Week 38 of 2008..Also mine shows DDR3 Micron Ram, do you have the same brand? The only thing I can figure is I have a T5800 Cpu which runs at 800mhz fsb but I dont think that should not let my ram run at 1006mhz?
