Depends on the types of programmes you're using. 2Ghz is pretty slow if you're using a program that uses only 2 threads, the 3.06Ghz will be faster, however if you're using a program designed to take advantage of >2 cores the quad will have the advantage.

Hi all, excuse the newbie style question but htis is the first time i have upgraded a laptop. Any problems putting 2 x 500gb Sata HD's into the 8930G? currently has 2 x 160gb.

Also, as i will be installing 2 new drives i will need to reinstall win7, i have the upgrade disc which was shipped from Acer to upgrade g=from vista, will this reinstall onto the new hard drive without vista being on to start with?

    cheers

    Russ

    Seagate Momentus 7200.5 750GB 7200rpm 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Mobile Hard Drive

2 of those would work too :p

Thanks for that was thinking about 7200 rpm but was worried about the extra drain on the battery. Any thoughts on the win 7 reinstall?

No problems about installing 2 new drives.

But you cannot install an upgrade OS version without having the previous OS version. You should install a nonupgrade Win7 version and use the serial you was provided. If you got problems when activating it, just call Microsoft - they will activate it in a few minutes.

What is up with 8930G's power charger or battery?

I've had my laptop for at least 2 years and about 6 months ago, I had to replace the power charger (from ebay 19v 4.7A... I even measured it with a multimeter) and now, I noticed that the battery was not able to charge fully. It stopped at 30%.

At first, I thought it was the battery so I got a new one (14.8v 4400 mAh) and that wouldn't charge at all. I've heard stories that users cannot get a new battery to work on the Acer 8930G? Something about a smart chip?

Anyway, I got another charger (again, from ebay) and it was able to charge my original battery ,but not the new one.

I see the blue light flicker on and off while I am using the laptop, which I don't think is normal. What is going on?

It is because I use a cheap charger where the amp may not be enough?

i have had problems charging 2 new batteries as well as my old battery is starting to degrade after having the laptop for almost 2years, the 1st new 1 i got wouldnt charge and the 2nd i got wasnt even seen by the laptop(showed as 'no battery detected' when battery was inserted) even though it ran for a little while off of the battery when the charger wasnt plugged in , weird..so i guess ill try a 3rd battery and hope that 1 charges lol
as for the blue light flickering, is it a rythmic flicker pattern, eg flashing on then off and on then off in a pattern or is it just flickering away like crazy?
i only ask about the light as mines used to flicker away like crazy when i had the laptop charging, and sometimes it wouldnt charge even though it said 'plugged in charging' and after a while the laptop would die off, turns out i had a broken wire at the laptop jack connection, i had to take the cover off the jack and resolder the black grounding wire at the jack...
that sorted my light flickering away like crazy, still havent found a solution to the new batteries not charging yet :(

Well, it looks like my 8930G days might be over...

My dog went into my room, jumped on my bed and pissed all over the left hand side of my laptop.
I as soon as i noticed it I switched the laptop off, and went about cleaning it. However, when trying to switch it back on again, it starts up, but before it POST's it powers off again.
The power button refuses to work after that. If I take the battery out, as soon as I plug the ac adaptor in, it powers on straight away, gets to the same stage then the power cuts out.
Sometimes the remote will turn it on, even when the power button doesn't, but I still only ever get to that same point.

    Is it buggered?

I've tried taking out both hard disks, and the ram and powering it on, but it gets to the exact same point.

It's worth noting that the same thing happens even when the lid is closed in regards to plugging the AC adaptor in, it'll power on for a few seconds then cut out.
I'm hoping the house hold insurance (which we've never claimed) will cover this, but if anybody has any suggestions on how I'd be able to get it working, that'd be great.
    --------------------
Insurance will not cover it. My warranty from acer ran out last week.

Hi, i have just got a 8930g laptop and my ram is being shown at ddr3 (i have checked the part number online and this also says it is truely ddr3) but only running at 800mhz im assuming because i have the T5800 cpu which runs at 800mhz, the motherboard in my 8930g is the psmbou (MBASZ0B001) version, now my question is this, would my motherboard take the M Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 cpu as this runs at 1066 MHz and should then realease the full speed of the ddr3 ram installed? any info on this would be really helpfull, many thanks

Some news of my card reader...

It cost me 10€ for a card reader on eBay + 3 hours to disassemble/reassemble the notebook.
This is nothing compare to the shame to discover that I was not inserting my card correctly since the beginning :D

I never thought, there was a spring in the card reader because mine was
already compressed (refurbished computer) so I inserted cards until I felt resistance.
My new card reader has a free spring, so I discover, I have to push on the card until the "click" ;)

Both card readers works like a charm..

im a 3820tg owner myself and clicked in here by mistake and saw your audio issue. I believe it's the HDD. you said you replaced yours? under warranty or did you buy one? when I first got my 3820tg I had the same microstutter your referring to. I was a real pain while gaming. anyways, I replaced the stock 500gb hdd with a small ssd and the stutter disappeared completely.

This problem has happened to me today it seems that when the laptop screen moves the jack casing rubs against that black wire and eventually works the wire loose. I have had mine for 5 months but have decided to send it back to be fixed as I am not that brave to try and fix myself. Has anyone found a solution to this its a definite design fault.

i dont think anyone has found a solution to it, its more just a case of fixing it as it happens, i had to resolder the black wire, ive not had to move the laptop since i did it a wee while ago but its holding for now......no doubt in a while i will have to open it back up and resolder it again :(

Hello everyone. I have an Acer 8930G and I'm wondering, how can I determine the motherboard version?
I mean whether is MB.ASZ0B.001 or MB.ASZ0B.004, in order to upgrade with a Q9000.

I think the general opinion is don't bother and get a T9900 or X9100 instead.

    Indeed, T990 - X9100 or a E8435 (cheaper but hot)

a quadcore might be worth it but not at 2ghz, a Q9200 @ 2.6-2.9ghz would be fine but bios supports is missing!

I'm asking because most of applications I use are multi-threaded, and as I read in this thread,
many people say that Q9000 is a better choice for this kind of apps.
In addition concerning benchmarking scores, Q9000= 36780 vs X9100= 32472 approximately in Dhrystone.

It would be nice if someone give an advice on how can I determine the motherboard version.
    If I have the MB.ASZ0B.001, then inevitable I'm going for a X9100.

from what i can gather, it should be wrote(or on a sticker) somewhere on the motherboard as whether it is a 001 or 004, although im unsure as to where abouts on the motherboard it is....i think perhaps the location of it is in this thread somewhere but this thread is over 200pages long lol...happy reading :)

as per this post found from x64man, in these forums, it appears the sticker for the motherboard number is underneath the RAM

Could not find a part number in that post only a vague reference to e-bay and China (as German is not my native tongue I might have missed something) costing 500 Euros. When I look at the specs on nVidia's web-site it indicates parts only for Dell, HP, & Lenovo.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M is a 128-core CUDA parallel computing processor, high-end mobile workstation graphics solution delivering 1 GB memory and excellent image quality and optimized visual computing application performance meeting the demands of a 1

128 CUDA cores sounds (in comparison to the 32 on the 9700M GT, hoping for double performance increase versus theoretical 4x performance increase) awesome for some of my applications (HD video editing), and running games at full 1080p with no throttling sounds too good to be true -- I'm very much interested in this upgrade

    -----

Thanks to others here, I've upgraded to 6GB RAM (no noticeable performance increase, benchmarks noted minuscule performance decrease), not that much of a performance boost; however, upgrading to a SSD as the primary drive and a 1TB as secondary (will fit 12.5mm form factor snugly), that upgrade rocks with time to boot performance increase of 600% and time to launch applications in the similar range :D

    check ebay.

Try to buy an HP card with the 0.10 bios, those can be flashed to a 280m which gives you game profiles etc.

Pretty much every mxm card should work in the 8930g since the fx 3700m is card with the highest power consumption which has a 2.1 connector (the real 280m is 55nm, the fx 3700m is 65nm).

difference between the 9700m gt <=> fx 3700m

    32 vs 128 shaders
    128 vs 256bit memory bus

so it's way faster, my fx 3700m has faulty memory so i'm stuck at 450/800 and it's almost twice as fast as the 9700m gt!

Another great option would be a 9800M g(t)s or the quadro equivalent fx 3600m. 64 shaders, 256bit but higher clocks then the fx 3700m. not as fast but still great and consumes less power!

Thats still pretty impressive though, considering what your system was scoring.

Would have been a similar percentage increase.

    9600m GT -> GTX280m
    GT240M -> 6770M

Just a quick one for you, if I upgrade my cpu to an x9100 or t9900 and my gpu to one of the higher spec cards as metioned above by Fragzero, will they be drawing extra power and if they are will the stock power supply (90w) manage or would it be advisable to try and get a 120w one?

    Cheers :)

i'd get a higher rated one, 120watt or even a bit more if you can find one!

First time poster, long time reader.

Just to add to the list of CPU upgrade success stories: the E8435 (SLAQD, C0 stepping) for $110 (all in price) from eBay arrived yesterday to replace P8700 in my 8930G. Thoroughtly cleaned the fan and heatsinks, applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste to both CPU and GPU and restarted the beast.

I also undervolted it to 1.1150 VID at 11.5x with ThrottleStop and it's running at about 41C idle (using PowerSaver functionality in ThrottleStop) and went up all the way to 65C after 30 mins of Orthos test. The temperature reading are from TZ?? thermal zones using Hwmonitor, as it appears the CPU reading in 8930G doesn't work. I am using the NXBT Cryo LX notebook cooler though.

This was my first ever laptop upgrade, so many thanks to the posters in this thread to encourage me to give it a try. Now it's time to get that FX3700M! ;)
