    Some of the CompUSA stores were purchased by Systemax who owns Tiger Direct the mail order company. That is great for us Orlando residents as the 2 stores were reopened. www.compusa.com

    If you have made the recover cds there is a utility on one of the disks that enables you to change the sensr reading direction so that you can use it how you want (infact running it I found it now accepts finger prints in both directions). I haven't got the disks to hand atm so can't confirm which disk and directory but memory serves it's cd 3

    Im just wondering should I get this Laptop.

    The price for the specs are really good, the price on the website Im looking to buy is €1016.

    Specs:
    * Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 / 2.4 GHz ( Dual-Core )
    * RAM - 4 GB (installed) / 4 GB (max) - DDR2 SDRAM ( 2 x 2 GB )
    * Hard Drive - 640GB (2X320GB) - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm
    * Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
    * Screen - 18.4' TFT 1920 x 1080 ( WUXGA ) - 24-bit (16.7 million colours) - CineCrystal
    * Optical Drive - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM / BD-ROM - integrated
    * Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT - 512 MB
    * Bluetooth - Yes
    * Notebook Camera - Integrated - 1 Megapixel
    * Warranty - 1 year warranty

    Now Im just wondering if this would be able to play new games such as Empire:Total war and such, you know yourselves all the new games out there.

    And also is there any other Acer Laptops I could get with a good price but better performance than this??Couldnt find any, Im really impressed with this one.

    It does play games quite well but tbh its main focus is media playing. The games I play wow, quake live and sumpreme commander all work well in 1920x1080 with a good-high detail settings

    I've just looked on my recovery DVDs. Provided you made DVDs and not CDs you want disc 3 and it's in the following directory

    Y:\Patch\Modules\Acer-HQ1\SET\Fingerprint patch

    You then need to extract the archive MO01SET0O00000002.WIM (I used the free 7-Zip).

    Now if you look in the folder 1 that you extracted there will be three batch files just run then one for your windows bit version (reverseSwipeDirection_
    32 or reverseSwipeDirection_64)

    If you dont have the recovery disks you can do it via the registry by editing/adding the following keys

    32Bit

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Validity\vfs101]
    "swipeDirection"=dword:00000001

    64Bit
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Validity\vfs101]
    "swipeDirection"=dword:00000001
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Validity\vfs101]
    "swipeDirection"=dword:00000001

    I presume to change it back just reset the dword to 00000000

    Hi Guys
    a newbie her, just had delivered my 8930g 584g32bn. Really impressed.
    Don't know if this has been covered before, but there are 2 hdmi sockets, one says hdmi and the other says display. Am I right in thinking that the one marked display will allow me to dual display to an external screen. The reason I ask is that I run a karaoke from my computer and just want to make sure that will work.

    Cheers

    No you have one HDMI port the labled Displayed is a Display Port this is almost a competitor to HDMI and some computers are using them on this screens mainly due to the fact that it is royalty free where HDMI requires manufacturers to pay yearly fees to use sych Tech. Regardless of this though it does seem still rare to find tvs/monitors with a display port regardless of the royaly free satus.
    As you don't know what display port is chances are your monitor doesn't support it but you may be able to use the VGA to output a 2nd external screen I have not tested if the the graphics card suppors this.

    This might be very useful information for you if you ever come across a problem when minimizing/maximizing windows especially a browser (any browsers) and it caused to lag/stuttering/etc.

    The problem I was having is when minimizing/maximizing a web browser (doesn't matter which browser it is), it caused it to stutter and the vertical scroll when scroll up/down a page was very chopping/stuttering.

    The problem came from the Nvidia video card, which mine is a 9700M GT and Nvidia is using a throttling program called Powermizer. Now, the Powermizer set the video clock speed to the minimum level until you are doing more intense 2D/3D graphics, it will kick-in and the clock speed reached the maximum performance.

    As soon as I opened up a browser, the video clock speed reached it max (to deal with the 2D effect), but it wasn't quick enough. It is too late by then.

    To solve that, I used a program called Powermizer Switch to turn off the throttling function only under AC mode and on when in battery mode. You don't have to have it running in the background. Just set it and reboot.

    No more 2D/3D stuttering or sluggishness.

    Hi
    I recently bought the 8930g. I've had about 2 weeks. The problem I am having is that it freezes quite often on startup. It has also frozen a few times while installing a game or other software. And last night I got the blue screen of death which said something about Page/stack......while playing Half-Life 2.
    I'm not sure the blue screen is related to the freezing as I was running the game on the top resolution.
    Does anyone have any ideas why it might be freezing? Has anyone else had this problem. I have heard that the 8920 or 6920 had freezing problems which was due to an error with the HDD.
    thanks

    beatbee,

    Is the heat that comes out of the vent pretty hot? If it is mildly warm then it cannot be the video card.

    Have you tried remove the video driver and install the lastes one?

    Try disable the background programs via msconfig.

    Do you have a spare SATA hard drive laying around?

    I don't think the heat is very hot. I've tried new drivers and disable background programs.
    Acer told me to do a ALT + F10 and restore factory settings. Do you think this might help?
    Will try tonight.
    Thanks for your reply.

    Hi Peoples
    I have a 8930 which is about 6 weeks old now and has started playing up
    i came on here to see if anyone else had the same problem.
    when i re-boot my laptop now it lights up but nothing except a black screen if i use the fix from here, i.e. remove power lead and battery for a few sconds then it boots fine, i was going to send it back to Acer as faulty but now i'm not sure what to do ? has anyone found out what causes this problem ? i have updated just about everything i can heeeeeelp :confused:
    second problem i have since updating the nvidia drivers is that realtek audio device throws an error at startup saying realtek audio notification has stopped working ??

    I too have the same problem when rebooting. I have installed vista x64 in dual boot ob D drive and this re-boots fine so can only assume its acers software causing the problem.

    Hi, don't know about the black screen issue but the realtek one can be rectified by performing a system restore to the point before you installed the NV drivers, then when you install the newer ones make sure untick the audio driver..

    thank's chris, i did think about that but the sound works fine through either device, the reboot problem is annoying though with a brand new £1 k laptop
    I think there may be some conflict comming from the Acer enpowering software as when i try using certain parts of it the computer locks up as well

    Hi, the problem is not the laptop but the install of the NV video drivers without unticking the audio ones first. It is a known conflict that happens between hardware drivers..

    Lol flashback all over;
    had the same problem
    it went worse when i kept ignoring it and just pull out battery each time to restart.

    SAVE Asap all your files you want to keep on the other storage disks.
    then just use the Acer recovering system and its all gone then.

    as mentioned before its becaus the conflict of realtek driver vs nvidia sound driver
    it messes things up really bad.

    your PC laggs like hell CPU is fully taken in :/

    secund
    when i play a game;
    it starts to glitch after a while if not cooled probally with a extra fan :/
    sounds just start to go slow motion and the game does 2 :(

    Any fixes for that ?

    Hi, seems strange you are associtating this to the sound drivers, before I learned the install procedure for the gfx drivers I had that bootup error message with the realtek drivers failing to load, however the laptop worked fine aside from the error message...

    same here

    also there is no need to use the recovery, just uninstall the nvidia driver by selecting only the audio hd driver from the nvidia uninstaller.

    this solved all my problems (this and the swipe reversal a few pages back, mine was upside down) :p

    What risk? It's only a driver...
    You can always use system restore or just reinstall it if the situation gets worse.

    Formatting the harddrive to restore one dirver issue... Now THATS a risk...

    You will need to partition and format the drive for it to show up in "my computer". You should be able to see it in disk management from the control panel. Make sure you choose the right disk when partitioning and formatting.

    You might check the boot options and the bios.
    Raid is useally set there.
    As you need to reformat your drives I believe to make raid work.

    Be sure to make backups ;-)

    Hi, you cannot hardware raid the drives as this does not exist, common to the majority of laptops. You can use the OS to software raid them but the are more negative issues than positive...

    Hi. :)
    Sorry for the daft question but just got my new 8930 yesterday and i see it comes with a small DVB-T adaptor so i'm guessing this for a indoor aerial? so am i right in thinking the acer has a TV tuner which has to be enabled somehow or am i way off track here. :eek:
    EDIT: Worked it out myself no problems in the end.

    Hello,

    I would like to buy a 8930G but I also want to buy 2 ssd's for it.
    Can anyone tell me if this can be done? Does 8930G support ssd's ?

    Thank you

    It depends on if the SSD has the right connector ;-)
    Check the manual for the definite type, all I can say right now is that this laptop has sata connectors.

    Personally I would only buy one ;-)
    Use a regular disk for all your junk & data
    Use the SSD for games and the OS.

    SSD's are still quite expensive

    SSD's are normally just recognised by the pc has a harddrive. It's the hds controller which determines if the pc can communicate with it. You have mentioned it's SATA2, the 8930g is sata2 compatabile so these ssds should work with no issues.

    Also good to know you have money to burn :D. The two hds are gunna end up costing more then the system itself :D
