Has anybody else experienced problems with the blu-ray player recently?

I purchased my 8940G on Boxing Day and tested the blu-ray player shortly after that. I haven't tried it for the last couple of weeks until today, but it doesn't seem to be reading the blu-ray disks correctly.

    Let me clarify:

Windows Media player says the blu-ray disks are empty. (it does recognize and play normal DVD's so I don't think it is a hardware failure).

Windows explorer recognizes the blu-ray disks (shows the correct name) and shows the directory structure and files on the disks.

Acer Arcade is refusing to play either the blu-ray or normal DVD's....weird.

    Hi all,

New to the forum. I've had this beastie for almost two months. So far i am pretty happy. My only gripe is the sensitivity of some of the touch buttons. While typing an e-mail, my finger brushes the wireless button and woomph!!. Disconnection. Will take some getting used to i suppose.

Also i see my specs are different than those posted on page 1:
    Mine are:

    Core i7 1.6
    NVIDIA GTS 250M - 1MB DDR3 dedicated
    4GB memory (can't wait for 4gb dimms)
    2 x 500GB hard drives (5400rpm)
    BD-RE
    Bluetooth
    Wireless
    Full backlikt keyboard

Came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit (Upgrade to ultimate took 10 minutes)

All in all, a great laptop i think

Anyone know as to if there are alternative American configurations of the 8940g that are available or will be available soon (like within a month). This is at the top of my list and i'm needing one by march.
I had seen an article or post mentioning different configurations of the 8940g, but today my looking around was only able to find a configuration that must be a europe only config, the Aspire 8940G-724G50Wn.

Just wanted to give folks an update on this problem.

It turns out it was the drive enclosure I was trying to use. The eSATA port on my Acer 8940g works great!

I bought and el cheapo drive enclosure that seemed nice because it offers both IDE and SATA connections internal and USB 2.0 and eSATA ports external. The first time I tried it was with a 320GB IDE drive to pull some data to my internal drive before hooking up my new 1TB SATA drive to the enclosure.

Already long story cut short: My new enclosure only allowed me to see the IDE drive through the USB 2.0 connection and once I hooked up my SATA drive to the enclosure I could see that using either the USB or the eSATA connection to my 8940.

My eSATA connection is pretty fast. I can transfer 10GB in about 2 min.

Acer sells at least two different models of 8940G: 8940G-6865 [US] and a different configuration in Europe, Australia. All of these configurations include an nVidia GTS 250M video card. You can find comparative laptop video card rankings by Googling to sites like this: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

There is apparently an as-yet unintroduced model named 8942G which will include an ATI 5000 series video card. There is an entire thread dedicated to this model here.

Has anyone ordered the recovery media from Acer? If so, and if you've received the actual media discs, can you tell us what you actually received?

I ordered a set as soon as I received my unit back in mid Nov and just received the media kit today. To my dismay, the kit only came with 1 CD/DVD that is labelled a "language disc". There was a single instruction sheet that the media came with that reviews the recovery instructions, but that sheet references the insertion of both a "System disc" and a "Recovery disc" as part of the recovery process. I did not receive that "System disc" or "Recovery disc" with the kit - just the language disc.

I'm pretty annoyed at this - especially as I paid for S&H and waited so long for the kit to come in. I've submitted a query to Acer support and am waiting for a response.

If anyone else has had a different experience, I'd like to hear about it.

    Thanks,

    Tariq

I haven't experienced any of this. I have no idea why your web-browsing experience is so bad.

I've played Mass Effect on this laptop - I got it for 5 bucks off of Steam.

Although the game was difficult to get running through Steam, once it did run, it ran great. All that to say that I think the game sucks, and I won't play it anymore.

Any breakthroughs on your browsing experience? It sounds like something is using up your memory or CPU cycles, since browsing and gaming sucks. Check your task manager for any memory-heavy or cpu-heavy operations.

2nd time poster here - the first being the post previous to this.

I love the laptop...love it. But, I want to make two upgrades.

Has anyone found the proper bluetooth chip to purchase? Are there installation instructions anywhere?

Has anyone found the proper hard drive rails to order, that will fit my SSD that I'll order soon?

    Thanks!

    Hi fantomasz

I ended up get a intel x25-M 80G for the 8940G......the acer was fast but with the Intel SSD the lappy flys!

Only disappointment is running the CrystalDiskMark 2.2 test, as the 4k read and write are slower than there supposed to be, all the other stats are on par.
Installed a fresh copy of Win7 64bit as I found using the backup disks did setup the SSD driver correctly. Would be interesting what you get on yours?
windows experience score 7.7 as does your.

    Cheers

I cannot find the American model 8940G-6865 anywhere for sale. This may be because of the impending release of the 8942G model. Have you searched for that model? The specs are different, mostly with respect to the discrete video adapter, which is an ATI model, thought to be a 5850 with 1GB DDR3.

    Hi guys!

I'm new here. I'm also in a serch for a Laptop. I find wery interesting also this Acer Aspire 8940G family. I was wondering, is it poible to install in that free mini PCi slot:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/shared/picture.asp?f=47977

an Mini-PCIe SSD something like this:
    http://www.supertalent.com/products/ssd_category_detail.php?type=Netbook

    and wich one?

I think the main question is: is it an IDE/PATA ore SATA interface an that Mini-PCIe slot?

I would be wery happy if somebody could answer it. That woud help me a lot!

    Thank you!

    Thank you for reply dwjp90!

I kow taht most of them ar slow acordin to the normal SSD drives, but I was thinking of geting the SATA Mini 2 PCIe model wich has the 150/100 Read/Write (MB/sec) speed. I think it would still bring some "speed up" effeckt.

My whole idea is to hawe the OS partition and the GAMES partition on the Mini PCIe SSD (64GB) and still hawe the two regular HDD as work, storage, backup, ....
What du you think? Is it worth the trouble ewen if man could get one with 64GB for 160€.

    Thanks again!

It could work, one problem with those ssds is they tend to choke.
I suppose at worst it could equal the HDDs r/w speed.

Unfortunately I have deleted the inf file I used for installation. But the Device ID can be found in devmgmt.msc by choosing GFX card -> Properties -> Details -> Compatible Ids (in the list). The part that was different from the other lines in nvam.inf was only the two bytes in the DEV_XXXX part. XXXX was 0CA9 (Rev. A2) on my 8940G so it's probably the same on yours. I added the line in all sections that had other graphics cards just to be sure.

Hey guys, i recently installed a fresh copy of windows ultimate x64 onto this laptop. Ive gone to the Acer website and installed all of the given drivers, and all is working fine except for one problem in the volume control. Whenever i mute the laptop, whether using one of the various mute buttons or going to the volume control and selecting mute, any time i adjust the speaker volume either up or down, the laptop unmutes itself. If there is anyone who has experienced this problem and found a fix, could you please tell me how you did so.

    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Mike

Just wanted throw my first post in on this thread and say this thing rocks! Picked it up on Newegg (open box) for $1000 and am amazed at the bang for the buck and build quality. I had my vid card crap out on my dell i9400 for the 4th time and decided to jump ship. I picked up ann Acer for my dad and was impressed and couldn't pass up the deal on Newegg. UNBELIEVABLE for that kind of money!!!

Thanks for the good info in the thread. Hope to see the 894x line grow and accesories like the drive caddy's and BT modules be easier to obtain.

With the original factory os and settings, messing with the volume dial wouldn't unmute it.

My issue is mainly of accidentally moving the dial and unmuting it, which can be rather annoying.

    OK download this
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3237434/test 2.exe
double click the tray icon, a window will pop open
IN the window go to view > Key history and script info
Hit the mute button, then f5.
there are 2 coulombs, Vk and Sc I need both for the mute button. (make sure you don't copy them for the f5 button)

The repeat for moving the volume wheel up then down.

Post (or pm) me the results.

I'm also installing a vertex SSD. Does anyone have a photo of what I need? I followed the link to Acer but no photo, just a model # from Europe. I will move the existing drive to the secondary bay.

I've got a mini PCI-e 32gb SSD in a Runcore external case not really dong anything right now. Once my 8940G arrives, I'll try popping it in and let you know how it works out. It's a pretty -poor SSD (came with my Dell Mini 9), so I doubt I'll want to use it day-to-day, but it should suffice for testing purposes.

That Port Designs bag does look pretty nice. Especially the rain protection bag. Now I just have to figure out how to buy it in the US.

ANYONE? I just ordered an SSD and want to know what mount I should buy. (US stores only)

Also, where can I buy the compatible bluetooth module in the USA?

    Hi!
I own Acer Aspire AS5942 (Win7 x64), but I'm missing the "Acer® Backup Manager". I tried to download it from the Acer's support site - it was not there. I asked the Acer support team to send it to me - they said it is not available yet ?!?

Could someone provide me with the "Acer® Backup Manager" link/download or to "Acer Driver/Resource CD/DVD" that includes it ?

I use Belkin USB micro Bluetooth adapter, and leave it inserted. It uses the already-installed Widcomm stack, and works great with MS BT Notebook Mouse 5000.
