Hi guys,
I want to draw your atention to the posibility to overclock this laptop without using an Extreme Processor. As we all know, the PLL used, SLG8SP585, does not allow for a FSB higher then 133MHz.
But it looks like somebody found a way to increase FSB, for this clock generator, using a software named Setpll and an optional harware mod to untie PCI-Express from FSB. The mod was tested on another Acer model, but it is said that it should work on our laptop too.
Now, my experience with this mod, brought a very modest overclock to just 135MHz - then laptop will crash. If others are interested, maybe we can come up with decent overclock, by experimenting or finding proper settings for the software.
Here are the links were software and details cand be found:

Hi guys a bit of advice here would be great. I have an 8942g with a possible faulty mobo. It went from working to not booting . I took it apart and with nothing to loose I had a go at a home mobo reflow. So now it is booting but the temprature goes straight to hell basically. The GPU and CPU are heading for 100 within minutes.
I installed the fan control utility and copied in the ini file that is on this site for the same laptop.
I am now seeing the temps raising but I also notice even though the fan say it goes from level 1 to level 6 I cannot notice any difference in fan speed at all. The question is does your fans go into hyper mode when the laptops get hot or do they casually sit there and watch the mobos bake. I am wondering if replacing the fan might help this. Or should I just bite the bullet and source a mobo. -
How is your good old 8942g?
Mine (almost 3 years old) is great - hinges ok, screen great (backlight, pixels, colour), keyboard works as it should (after almost 3 years now and I am sort of a gamer) All ports work (and I have multiple USBs, HDMI cable always in, eSATA disk always in, UTP, battery is ok (but I keep it out most of the time). No scratches or palm rest smudges (like my asus and toshiba used to have), no funny noises or rattles - all screws are in their places (not like some of my laptops that ended up missing a screw for some reason), all rubber pads are in place (and it is a heavy laptop and I pull it on the table sometimes). Camera has no bright pixels, background light on keyboard works well. DVD recorder works. Card reader works. IR works too (and I use HP laptop remote on it
)
A few issues:
My space bar sometimes doesn't register keypress if I press only the left tip of the key and glossy black cover is always dusty. Also when it goes to sleep with headphones in, and then after wake up I disconnect headphones, the sound is messed up. It uses only bass speakers and 5.1 system doesn't work despite the settings. Normal boot solves everything. What sound driver are you all using? I actually run some new legacy Realtek drivers.
Also I find microphone settings messed up too. There are two mics on my system (I think System default and Realtek) and sometimes they are either too low or too sensitive. I am never sure how will I sound on skype in videochat. It must be in connection to the previous issue with computer going to sleep and then Realtek sound system doesn't work correctly afterwards.
I removed fingerscaner software and use old Synaptics touchpad drivers (no Scrybe).
I also have 4GB of 1333 MHz RAM in 2x2GB cards. I would like to upgrade to 8GB (I updated BIOS a couple of times already so it should work now).
I use ACFanControl (50 degrees C at 1st fan speed which is very quiet) and have an SSD as the main (Cdisk and the second disk (320GB 5400rpm) goes to sleep after 5 mins of idle time. So my 8942g is very, very quiet.
I overclock Ati 5850 in Trixx and I get roughly 10-20% better performance in games at almost no temp difference. I use latest ATI released drivers, but betas work too. Actually I have no issues whatsoever with my ATI whatever drivers I use.
I never get any BSODs in Win 7 or anything. Windows 8 RTM is overall faster than Win 7 on this laptop and it boots in around 15 secs from the powerbutton press. Apps start faster and I think sound works better (see above issue) than in Win 7. All devices work in Windows 8 and no additional drivers are needed but I installed new ATI betas and Realtek for 5.1 sound.
So if you are still using 8942g, is it all ok? For me this laptop is one of the best I had (and I had I think 12 brandname laptops in 11 years - all well above average models or desktop replacements). This one still works great.
Cheers,
Ivan -
Hi people,
I've been thinking recently.. How is our Aspire 8942G compared to modern mid-range multimedia desktops? I bought mine in september 2010, it has Core i7, 8gb ram, Radeon Mobility 5850HD (ddr3 version). It maybe a problem with my system, but even recent World of Warcraft seems to be slow now, although automatic recommendations ingame seem to be high, but on them it runs even slower. I thought that graphics card might be a thin point, I read once that i have the worst one of the series (ddr3 against gddr). So now I'm thinking whether it would be a good idea to buy a mid priced desktop as an upgrade or not. -
Hello Folks!
I want to upgrade my current system into Windows 8 but Acers hompage dont show me any drivers for my 8942G
for windows 8 ,Any solution ? -
Hello guys, iam having this acer aspire 8942g 18.4' i7 2.66gz, ati 5650hd, 4gb ram and 640gb hdd for 2 yeas now... and iam thinking to upgrade it and make it a little bit faster... what i want to upgrade is my ram and to import a second hard drive "sdd" so there i could install my os for more speed... i know that i must take 2x4gb ram (but how much speed "mhz" on ram my laptop support? and i know that my port is sata2 so i wont take all the read and write power from the ssd sata3 disk.....so i want your help and i want u to recomend me which brand memory ram should i take and which brand of ssd should i take(sata3)... the ssd i want must be 120giga-180giga no more and no less(of course i want to be sure if all this will be compatible with my laptop)...Thank you very much waiting for your reply.

I do have one issue with my ACER Aspire 8942G laptop. I am unable to install the ACER BIO Protection software. However which way I try it sits at about 50% install and nothing happens.
Task manager reports intall as running
But although the device is detected correctly, I cannot use the fingerprint device -
Laptop now functioning as well as can be.
Used the Bio Protection software from a Travelmate 8572G -
Acer says:
Dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM support
Up to 4 GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, upgradeable to 8 GB using two soDIMM modules
//rmi -
For example my 8930g can take 6gb of ram and is rated 4gb.
And this Ultra M3 PTG i own can take 10gb though its rated for 6gb Max (2gb soldered onboard 2gb in slot)
Just means this mobo actually utilizes it. -

I have mounted new ssd beside original hdd. I used the place at side and I'm going to put windows onto ssd, should I use the place in the middle or is it ok to put 'main drive' on 'secondary place' (is there speed difference or so)?
Another thing was that original drive was mounted with metal bracket and I don't have such bracket for ssd. Should it be inside or do I need to get it elsewhere? If so where can I find this metal bracket?
Thanks. -
hello again i want to buy the vertex 4 for my 8942g and as i saw many videos with it says that it comes with a pc 3.5'' bracket and not a laptop 2.5'' bracket, so i decided to look if my 8942g 2nd hdd placement has a bracket and as a result it dont, so i have some questions: first of all will this ssd drive fit to my laptop and can i use it without a bracket and if i will, will i have some problems after that without using a bracket.... Or if i should get one bracket it must be an acer one or any bracket will fit to my laptop?
-
the bracket is only so you can fit it inside a desktop case.
all ssds are 2.5" by default aka it will just naturally go into your laptop. -
yes but in laptop will it be stanbilized? i want to say when i will close the case it wont be damaged without a bracket? cause i am rly thinking of not buying one cause i cant find one

Nice lounge for this Acer model here
Just got on 8942G (744G64Mnbk)
The laptop powers on, all lights on, but nothing appears on screen, when I press the power butten again (just once) it turns off. I do not need to hold the button to power off.
I have checked everything including RAM etc... the CPU gets warm so there are some signs of "live inside"
I dont want to read the whole thread so just asking some advice, before I scavenge it for parts.
I suspect the GPU again, as it is routine now having GPU failure on all these laptops... -
Laptop scrapped for parts, didnt get it working

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what's wrong?
So I read that you could upgrade ram to 16gb here so I bought a couple of sticks of 8gb ram to replace my current 2x4gb ram sticks. I install them and power up my laptop and you see the windows logo screen come up for a few seconds before it crashes and I get a blue screen with a 'bad_pool_header' error and then it reboots and the cycle repeats itself.
So I'm curious can you actually install 16gb on this laptop or not? Or does the fact that I have an core i3 CPU rather than a core i7 make any difference? I've tried everything I can think of but nothing seems to work. -
Also another question is that I was thinking of upgrading my CPU to an I7 840qm. Just to confirm is that supported by the 8942g? -
2. Yes, you can install an i7 840QM. However, It would be easy to do. However, if you have the patience, you should obtain a Dell 150W power adapter, one of the i7 Extreme models (920XM, 940XM), and add a custom bios to unlock it's potential.
If you like to tinker around, you can get around the SATA-2 motherboard controller limitation with a mini PCIe to SATA-3 adapter, and then custom wire a SATA-3 SSD to it. There is enough space in there to do this.
Enjoy. -
I am looking for a screen upgrade.
Does anybody know if there is one compatible with our laptop with a higher resolution? -
Hi all , ex gaming pc, now laptop bound
