    Hi guys,
Anyone tried SetFSB with this laptop ? It is posible to overclock main processor ? Does anyone know wich PLL is used ?
Latest SetFSB includes some Aspire models with new Core processors.
I am asking because I am about to buy this laptop with a core I5 430, but I want to know if it is posible to squeez more out of it.

    Hi shaneee,

Can you try SetFSB with clock generator for Asus G73, to see if you can get some valid clocks ?
You can get some instructions here - Asus G73 Overclock Thread | Facebook.
This notebook is not so new. It has been annouced in december 2009.
I just want it because I can not get a fully loaded G73 in the place where I live.
    Thanks

Yes, I have seen that page - 8942G is not in the list.
But according to the service guide I posted above, the card looks like MXM.
That is way I ask. Maybe only models with 5650, have an MXM Type II card ?

If many of you have spare cash around 300 USD, please upgrade your laptop screen to LTN184HT02(from Sony AW RGB LED). Then your life is different.

Review Acer Aspire 8943G Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

    Maximum: 207 cd/m²
    Average: 195 cd/m²
    Illumination: 86 %
    Black: 1.06 cd/m²
    Contrast: 189:1

The overpriced product accompanied with low-end display.

btw, your only choice is LTN184HT02 due to your LED backlight configurations.

I have to admit, that is very sexy notebook. 4 slot for RAM but the maximum it can go still up to 8GB RAM. So I don't know what is the advantage with this configuration. If I'm not mistaken (I'm not a computer geek ;) ) this should improve memory performance.

Did you have overheating problems when you overclocked your video card ?
What do you think was to much overclocked - core or memory ?

i think i overclocked core 2 much, i clocked it 750, i noticed that it gave me only an increase of 1-2 frames:S! it also was verry unstable!..mem instead, i clocked it 2 1050, it gave me an increase of 5 frames max. i have tested it with the game Metro 2033..after oc, this game runs better :D

But then i starder 2 see strange green pixels all over the screen. i thought my screen was broken.. but acer replaced the whole motherboard!

So my advice is don't clock core 2 much stay under 700mhz...mem can be overclocked 2 around 1000mhz.

    my lap:

    core: 700mhz
    mem: 1000mhz

    i saw a part of an 8943g in notebookcheck.net:

"VRAM also only has a speed of 800 MHz rather than 1,000 MHz, which is a further hindrance"

8943g has the same card as 8942g

So i think stupid acer downclocked this card 2 800mhz:S this card is made foor 1000mhz..core is @ max speed so don't overclock it 2 much

also don't forget 2 plug in the power suply when overclocking this machine :D or else you will get some driver errors

My GPU temps never went higher than 74° C (that's the highest one I managed to record in midst of summer), no matter what. Usually they're under 70° (depending on the game - that GTA IV and Crysis are real GPU/CPU heaters). Overclocked to 700/1000 GPU is just slightly hotter (+ 3-5° C), no artifacts or anything and performance gain is up to 5-6-7 fps.
Speaking of temperatures, the highest CPU temp recorded was 82° C, usually under 78° (full load).

By the way, my laptop is still being repaired... They ordered a new screen bezel to fix that dust problem but they've got two variants - standard & flush (mine is flush - you can see both of them - standard & flush versions in Acer's Service Manual). I'm not sure if both of them can be attached, but I'll choose that 'standard' one which doesn't cover the lcd display all over and has two screws instead of plastic clips.
And, unfortunately, one of my two HDDs just died so they'll replace it too... guess I'm lucky.

i assume it is also i7 like mine..because i have the same max temps on full load when overclocked 2 700,1000mhz..i think the cooling is ok with 8942g.. i owned a 8930g 9700mgt and there the temp was a big problem.. max it was 97 degrees @stock clocks...the ati 5850 runs much cooler because of the lower clocks

@kizwan: when i reversed the clockes the pixels were still there.. i think something broke on my mobo, i thought it was the screen because i tested it on external monitor and the pixels were not there.

@Seaman: i don't have pictures or anything.. iw ill post it later.. but iam sure it was that temp, because i monitored it all the time. clocked @ 700, 1000,mhz gave me a temp of 74-75 max when playing a heavy game like Metro 2033

So, I bought an Aspire 8942G with I5 - 430M, Radeon 8550, 8Gb RAM, Bluray, etc. Unfortunatelly , I am overseas - didnt even see the laptop wich was purchased by my family at my orders.

I hope I5 with Arrandale core will be cooler than I7; Bad news is that clockgenerator for this laptop it's a Silego SLG8SP585V wich does not support changing FSB. So, no overclock. I supoze, I have to replace CPU for a quad core, later, if I am satisfied with the laptop.

Check out this thread about this clock generator - http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/497374-pll-8760-w870cu.html

    It is i7... Blu-ray, 8GB, 2x640GB, etc.
Before this Acer, I had Dell (with Core 2 Duo), Asus (AMD Turion) and Toshiba (i3) and Acer is easily the coolest (and the loudest) one.
I've never had an overheating issue of any kind even after a few hours of playing Crysis.
However, I'd like to buy some cooling pad but I just can't find one that's big enough...

    Can I ask you something?
As you know, they replaced my LCD panel under warranty. Later I've heard 'off the record' from some service centre guy that the whole back casing (LCD panel, covers and everything above hinges) should have been replaced in the first place, not just that LCD panel itself.
I kind of doubt his statement, but if it's true, I can complain and demand other replacement. What do you think? Or does anybody know what is usual notebook manufacturer's policy regarding screen replacement under warranty?
    Thanx!

    Guyz..
First of all you cant put an i7 720-740/820-840/920XM-940XM/ on a i5 laptop, its a different platform.
Secondly the i5 will be a little bit cooler i suspect around -5C/-10C than the i7.
Thirdly i dont think this laptop can handle those 920XM or 940XM cpu's.I believe it can't cool them down with this "simple" cooling system.

i5 & i7 laptop use similar chipset (either PM55, HM55, HM57, etc). What do you mean by "different platform"? If you have any source (e.g. white paper, technical blog, etc) regarding this, please share with us.
We can always "improve" the cooling system, for example mod it with copper shim.

The stock cooling system should be enough. It is important that your notebook power supply/battery can supply enough power. For example, i7-920XM require 55W max TDP while i7-720QM require 45W max TDP. So, I think as long as your power supply is higher than 90W, it should be OK.

Not only the power suply is important also the mobo.. Some mobos's are power caped..so if the 920 is not working.. And you buy for example a 120w powersuply it still won't work

LOL. The only reason if 920XM doesn't work on 8942G is because the motherboard is not compatible with it. What is the specification of 8942G's power supply? I doubt it is 90W since it have i7-720QM (45W) & ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 (31W). So power supply shouldn't be a problem since you only need to squeeze 10W more for 920XM (only if you run it in full speed Turbo Boost). If I have 8942G & I want to upgrade to i7 extreme processor, I will be worried on motherboard compatibility than power supply.

EDIT: I think when we discuss about i7 extreme processor compatibility on 8942G, we actually forgot there already at least one people who have successfully upgrade from i7-720QM to i7-920XM. ErikO's 8942G is the proved. :)

Thanks. :) I think if you improved the heatsink for CPU a little bit like I mention earlier, you can get score higher than that. i7-720QM a little bit lazy to Turbo Boost to highest speed. ;)

Does anyone know if VT is enabled in this laptop? Heavy VMWare applications is one of the reasons I bought this laptop.
I understand VT-d is disabled in core i5 processors, but there is still VT-x if not disabled by bios.

The latest driver is 10.8... For some reasson 10.9 had to come out... But didn't arrived...compared to the first driver.. 10.4 i think. It is better... Ati doesn't have good driver support like nvidia. For example.. Ati radeon driver are for all the series:s... Nvidia comes with moire specific driver not for all geforce series... I just don't get it why ati. Doesn't come with drivers specific for 5000 series....stupid ati

This is incorrect. There is no driver for specific geforce. One driver support all geforce card. Like ATI, it is split to two platform, desktop & notebook.

What i mean is... If you look @ nvidia driver it is for about 6 series.... Iff you look @ ati driver it is for 18 series!... So nvidia is more specific... i said it i little bit wrong

Also I was wondering, does anyone else have this problem? Sometimes when I use the scroll bar on the touchpad, occasionally it will stop working for no reason and I have to restart the laptop or logout and re-login to get it working again. Any answer for this?

Maybe you accidentally activated that lock button near the touchpad? Anyway, try the latest Synaptics drivers, sounds like a software problem...

Has anyone noticed their Blu-ray drive scratching cd/dvd/bd discs?
Mine is drawing thin lines here and there consistently... Discs are still usable but it shouldn't happen.

Yes, mine does that too. In fact, it won't let me use my touchpad at all while any key is kept pressed. When the key is released, touchpad restores its function after a second, so... apparently it's "normal". Mouse, however, works every and anytime.

I've got a question... I need to order two pairs of rubber screw covers/bumpers, the upper and lower pairs - for Aspire 8942G standard bezel. Does anybody know the correct part name (those names usually look like long passwords)?

Here's the photo (upper two are marked... well, obviously...):

Yes, I think it is normal too. I believe this is Acer answer for preventing accidental touching of the touchpad while typing. On my Asus notebook, touchpad can still be use when typing but it won't respond if I accidentally put my palm on the touchpad area while typing.

According to 8942G service manual, the screw is M2.5*4. This is taken from service manual:-

    M2.5*5 2 86.ARE07.004
