    Hello ^ nox

that was an extreme stress test for the GPU with Furmark.
Such things never occur in everyday life!
At the final battle with Xesha in Gothic 4 - Arcania I had a maximum temperature of 76 ° C.
    Very many effects!
The ambient temperature was at 25.8 ° C!!
The notebook was standing on a wooden table.
The notebook will be in games never hotter than 76 ° C with TRIXX (800/1080/1.15V)
    In Gothic 3 with 1980x1080 pixels and extreme detail, I had a maximum of 70 ° C.

You can also buy this Cooler Pad:

    Zalman ZM-NC2000Black Notebook Cooler (Black)
    I ordered it myself...

    This reduces the temperature further.
Also, you will certainly have less than 25.8 ° C ambient temperature.
My apartment is under the roof.
Since it was recently very hot (25.8 ° C)
    Summer!

    Best regards from Germany

Depend on the application you use. With more heat produced, I don't recommend increasing the TDP limit.
You can only overclock with extreme edition processor. Because this kind of processor have unlocked multiplier.

The reason why I chose 740QM is because...actually I don't have special reason. Why don't you get 920XM instead? I believe 920XM found on eBay is engineering sample processor but it should work anyway.

    Hello kizwan

Is it surely possible with your BIOS ( Aspire 8942G 3109 microcode MOD TEST R4.rar) my CPU i5 450 M from Acer Aspire 8942G-434G50Mnbk to overclock?
If yes ... How does it work?

    Thank you!

You'll need extreme edition processor, e.g. 920XM, to overclock.

Hi guys, I have freezing problems with my 8942g they usually occur after playing a game, even if I played only for 2 minutes. I can play CPU exausthing games for hours without any problems, but whenever I stop playing laptop seems to freeze within 5-15 minutes, when it freezes I can press the buttons on media control and they work fine, then few seconds after it froze fan starts to work really fast and it makes really loud noise. Then I hold the power button to shut it down, and I can't turn it on for next 10-15 minutes for various reasons(There is nothing on the screen on the boot, it freezes under windows, linux, even while browsing BIOS options).

CPU temperatures after playing games is around 80-85°C and laptop freezes after it starts to cool down around 70-75.

Any ideas what could cause these problems?

    Laptop has i7 720qm CPU, 8gb DDR3, ATI 5850 1gb, 640x2 HDD.

    Hi Seaman,

I'm sorry, but I won't be pushing 4-cores hard, until I'm home again with my 150W Power Supply. I shall then gladly tweak, crash, and re-tweak, and upload some data for you all.

And that could be months away I'm afraid.

    Cheers,

    Erik.

    Hi ErikO,

Do you still in Asia? If you are, what is max CPU temperature you got when on heavy load (or when stressing the CPU with prime95 for example)? I'm asking because I'm going to change the thermal compound I'm using right now which is Arctic MX-4. MX-4 have good review but it tend to perform worse after several month. Just a couple of days ago I repaste with thicker layer. I ran prime95 (In-place large FFTs) for 5 hours. At the beginning, the CPU Core 4 spike to 98C (for a couple of seconds), then down to 90C - 95C (for a couple of minutes) & then finally it settled at 80C - 87C. What do you think of these temperatures? Is it good? bad? BTW, I have i7-720QM. I'm worried after a couple of months it loose good thermal conductivity. I just hope the thicker layer last longer. So, what thermal compound are you using right now? Does it perform good in long period? Right now, I'm considering Shin-Etsu G751 or IC Diamond 7/24 Carat. What do you think?

Don't know about you guys, but I am not comfortable with this kind of temperatures.
I am a long time overclocker, but I would rather not overclock without proper cooling.
And in a laptop, the parts will finally fail with this kind of power consumption and temperatures.
I will give a second thought about repalcing my i5 with an 920XM.
Still waiting for some figures from Erick.
    Thanks

    Kizwan,

I see you are in Malaysia. I was there for a week, one week ago. Where are you exactly? I plan to be in KL in 3 weeks... maybe we could meet up?

I've done no further testing, as I'm busy with work and my CCIE just now.

    Regards & PM me.

Unless there are some bug-fixes in the 940XM architecture, I can see no reason to buy this over the 920XM, IF you are using an unlocked bios.

Reason is that you can set the 920XM mulitplier to the values of the 940XM, and beyond, as you dare.

IF, however, you are using a locked bios, then yes, buy the 940XM, as you've no other way to reach 3.33GHz, which I believe is the max clock for that CPU in such a situation.

So buy the cheaper CPU, learn how to 'lap' a cpu for cooling performance, and invest in a Dell PA-150 watt power supply, as you're gonna need it.

    Hi,

Currently I'm at North Malaysia. I'm outstation there at the moment. Roughly 200km from KL.

I managed to fixed my problem. For unknown reason Arctic MX-4 doesn't work well (worst actually) on Dell Studio 1557. I fixed it by changing to Shin-Etsu thermal compound. Great stuff Shin-Etsu. You can see the comparison between Arctic MX-4 & Shin-Etsu here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/7911260-post1823.html I recommend it to anyone with Intel Core quad core processor.

    hey,
is there anyone who has a acfancontrol.ini for my 8942g with i7-720m? Or are there other ways to mod the fan? The annoying fan just never stops.. the acer aspire 3820TG for example has the possiblity to flash the KBC to control fans..

    greetings from germany

BTW: why is my "windowsleistungsindex" only 5,9 for the HD5850???

    Hello maikvalberg,

The reason is that you have a slow hard disk installed!
The Windows Experience Index reads always the weakest hardware and displays this number on it.

With you that's the hard drive - buy yourself an SSD and you have a higher index!

    Hi Kizwan

I just ordered the product couple days ago from ebay. I am curious do i have to apply this compound by itself or do i need an actual thermal paste as well ? Thanks i will report back once i test it out.

Also i am thinking about doing a further upgrade of my cpu to 840qm. Do i have to update my bios or is the stock one fine and will recogonize the cpu ?
This is the one im considering : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-...-ES-/300607201827?pt=CPUs&hash=item45fd95e223
Im not sure what engeneering sample means though

On another note, does anyone know if it is complicated to install a bluetooth adapter into my laptop i found one on ebay : 2.1 Bluetooth Module + Cable acer aspire 8942G AS8942G | eBay

    All the best !

What do you mean by " ...apply this compound by itself..." & " ...do i need an actual thermal paste as well..."? "Thermal compound" & "thermal paste" are the same thing. What you need to do is to put the thermal paste on the CPU & GPU, then put back the heatsink. On the CPU, I use single line method (meaning I put single line of thermal paste on the CPU). On the GPU, I use pea method (meaning I put a small "ball" of thermal paste on the GPU).

Before putting new thermal paste, you'll need to clean out the old one first. This require a lot of patience. Do not use any metal or hard object for cleaning the old thermal paste. Use lint free cloth or old t-shirt or coffee filters paper to clean the old thermal paste. Do it gently. To clean it faster, you can use Isopropyl Alcohol (91% strong). Make sure to air dry if some of Isopropyl Alcohol liquid came in contact with pins or other components.
ES or Engineering Sample means the CPU is not final product. This CPU actually for testing before the final product produced. ES CPU is cheaper than original OEM one.
It should be easy. You might need to use a double-tape to secure the bluetooth device.

Thanks for the tips, yeah i was abit shocked appearantly there is 3 different thermal solutions i gota bit confused : Thermal pad vs. Thermal grease vs. Thermal Paste - Geeks to Go Forums

As for the replacement as far as i know the 8942g you can just take the bottom off to get to you hdd's ram etc and then the heatsink above the cpu can be unscrewed. I dotn think i can get to the GPU i would have to dissasmble further. In my case i can lift the heatsink jsut high enough to swap the cpus.

Thanks again for the tip , all should be coming in a week or two im jsut hopign the 840qm wont throw a hiss with my current bios.

    Gents,

Taking a break from CCIE study, I did some modifications to my 8942G wireless internals.

The attached pics explain it all really, but to summarize, I order a custom pig-tail, in low-loss cable, added an Intel 5300N (actually added that long ago), for it's 3x3 capability, and the fact that I trust Intel.

I, like others, didn't have the TV card installed (Boo), so punched-out the hole that the TV antenna would have connected to, bought a bunch of tools, and made the hole nice and clear to take the RP-SMA bulkhead.

I also have a couple of external antenna's to connect to it, a 3dBi, and a 9dBi version. Results were 2 to 4 networks visible at the condo, to 6 to 7, networks visible now.

I also have a 3m low-loss length, to add to a magnetic base for the extention to window-sills etc, so that I can capture, connect, and do as I please really.

Of course I should say that I initially had marginal connectivity, forcing me to experiment, or suffer the hourly disconnects.

So far I've not been 'dissed' this evening.

Anyway, just sharing. Happy tweaking & modding!

Yes, I think it is better, I pulled the Atheros in the first week I think. I planned to run my home on the 802.11a 5GHz network, and I don't think the Atheros covers that band. Only, I've not spent so much time at home to get that up and running.

    Hello kizwan,

I have eSATAp in use for half a year!
Plug and play works in the Windows operating just like USB stick.
I have used up to 100MB / s when copying data - super fast!
    A great thing ...

The matching enclosure for a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive can be found here:

Delock Gehäuse ( 6,4 cm (2,5 Zoll), SATA HDD Power Over eSATA)

Can you tell me please answer this question yet?

Depend on your hardware. I won't be able to list all useful settings here. You can experiment yourself or ask seamen. The C states settings are useful where when you disabled some C states, SSD performance will increase. You can disabled Hyperthreading if you use software/games that doesn't support HT.

    Thank you!
(Bios - C states disabled) I'll test it and make benchmarks of the SSD.

    See you soon...

Do not disabled all C-states. Try disabled only C6 & C7. Please refer to this post.

    That's no good.
The result is even bad in my benchmarks.
I have two benchmarks performed with C6 disabled ...

Now I have made a total of eight benchmarks and all
    possible C-State settings are tried.
Even more, the SSD charge too much.

hi everyone, ive has my 8942g for 12 months now.

    its spec is as follows
    i3 330m
    6gb ram
    500gb hdd
    5650 gpu

I started getting a bit bored with it so ive just upgraded the cpu to an i7 720qm.

    1. What core temps should i be seeing? is 40-45 on idle normal? and it has hit 100oc a cople of times under load. i'd be interest to see what the factory i7 machines do.

2, what other upgrades are worth doing? ssd? 8 gb ram?
