Practice and theory are not always the same!
Very strange ...

That's for sure . I looked at CPU benches and the 740qm performed on some little higher on other about the same although the 840qm did performe about 300 points more on most. If you don't wanna go to extreme CPU and having to buy a 150 w psu. I would suggest 840qm is the best if it's sold for the right price !
God luck shopping ! -
Hello ^ nox,
I'm still undecided.
But thank you!
Can you please make a benchmark?
with 3DMark06
(725/1000) with your overclocking.
Cheers -
My results (such as hardware in my signature)
Hello ^ nox,
thank you!
In 3DMark06, your i7 820QM only have 3% more power (total points)
In CPU score but you have 27% more power
With 725/1000 I can not overclock.
Without overvoltage me crash the graphics driver from there!
In the conversion of videos, the i7-820QM determined much more power
Cheers -
Wow very good results, well i guess that would determine if you want to upgrade or not. I do a lot of video editing so quad core is usefull for me. I was considering the i7 640m which is by far the fastest dual core cpu with low TDP but it still sells for a bit high of a price. You should check it out, because if you are looking to upgrade and only require 2 cores that would be probably the best. But be carefull i have not yet found anyone who succesfuly upgraded to this cpu on acer 8942g.
This is the CPU specs: Intel® Core? i7-640M Processor (4M Cache, 2.80 GHz)
Btw so you increase the voltage to make your gpu stable when overclocking ? I only use AMD Gpu Clock Tool and run my overclocking profile at 1.00v. Ive never had my driver crash. Are you using the latest Catalyst 11.11 ? Ive never overclocked higher than 725/1000 which generates maximum heat of 71 - 72 degrees celsius. id like to stay around 70 both with cpu and gpu, since i had another laptop that was always around 80 - 85 and eventually fried
I am having one isuue still since the upgrade of my cpu. I am gettign crackling audio and cant determine the cause. I seem to have high latency coused by some drivers which is convincing me to mayeb reinstall my OS, did you ever experience anythign like this ? -
Hello ^nox,
Due to the crackling sound:
First Install new chipset drivers (using CMD or. Bat file!)
Second Sound driver to reinstall.
chipset drivers: Look in the readme.txt!
There are the CMD commands in it.
setup.exe on the chipset drivers will not install new!
That many do not know ...
I prefer ATI 11.9 together with the 11.11 Aplications profile.
The Aplications Profiles only work if ATI Catalyst Control Center is installed!
The Aplications Profiles bring the most power in games!
As with the ATI driver works properly with the new games.
ATI 11.11 does not allow overvoltage and that's bad.
With the heat I have no problems.
In games I've overclocked about 65 ° and this is perfectly ok.
In the past I have always taken AMD Clock Tool.
TRIXX is better.
TRIXX regulates the dynamic overclocking!
Cheers -
Oh yeah you do loose on the memory timings i didnt see that, but appearantly games/fps wise the 640m is very strong
Thanks for all the info, how do you btw use the Application Profiles , they do not show up in my Catalyst Control Center. I have 11.11 driver installed and aplication profiles as well. -
Application Profiles you will not be displayed in the ATI Catalyst Control Center!
It works but ...
You should install the ATI driver package user-defined.
There you have to install additionally activate the Aplication Profiles.
Your laptop needs to reboot.
Cheers -
Perfect thats what i always do
So it should be fine, btw after updating my chipset , intel rapid storage stopped working, my cpu score in WEI went down from 7.2 to 7.1 and memory went up from 7.2 to 7.4. I jsut thought you should know
All the best -
Just a quick update thoughts about my new cpu/memory !
Going from i3 330m to i7 820qm is a massive improvement. In terms of raw processing power / gaming i can see two things.
No game has yet fully utilized the quad core or its turbo boost frequency either because of no demand from the current software and or the TDP thermal limits of the machine.
So would i want any higher clocked CPU ? Yes and no...
In terms of gaming NO since the cpu can scale up to 3.06Ghz and i have not seen a game yet demanding so much power (Crysis2, L4D2, Skyrim etc) it is unnecessary to add more heat to the machine and focuse more on overclocking the GPU.
In terms of raw processing power (Sony Vegas Rendering) , YES , hell i would even go higher han 940xm but that wont still make rendering a few minute job as it depends on way to manny other factors (effects, quality, codecs...)
Am I satisfied ? Yes, very much the i7 820qm has proven to be probably the best fit in terms of gaming power / raw processing power for mere 125$. It runs around 40 - 43 idle and peeks at maximum of 72 degrees under load along with gpu overclocked.
More benches and observations to come ! -
Which bios version do you use?
Cheers -
Nice comparison ! I use 3015 just installed it couple days ago ...
-
-
Remember i upgraded from an i3 330mSo the increase for me was significant. I think personally i wouldnt want to go to the extreme series as the machine has enough heat already. My last upgrades for my acer will be a blue tooth, SSD and maybe that is a very big maybe eGPU
-
Hello ^ nox,
the temperatures of the i7-920XM are low in Erik0 Notebook:
(He has clocked down slightly)
The i7-840QM sold any cheap ... (was always my favorite)
i7 740QM there are often used on eBay ...
Go buy this WLanCard.
Super Wireless Range - extreme!
INTEL Centrino Advanced-N 6230
Also has Bluetooth 3.0!
I installed it - great!
Has just snowed in Germany
Cheers -
Oh nice ! That would save me putting in the dedicated blutooth card although i am curious the touch button probably doesnt disable / enable blootooth if its built into the wireless card ?
nice find ! Remember the idle temps are usually everywhere same, u need to see the stress temperatures as thats whats gonna matter , i was worried since i have ES version of my cpu that it would be runnign hot as they usually are tested overclocked/tested through the roof yet its running just fine but remember the XM version have higher TDP 55W extra 10 W from i7 regural and they are also clocked higher in turbo. Try and see if erico can provide some stress temps.
Before i cought my cpu i researched and researched based on price/temperatureunderstress/performance in the same order -
Bluetooth is always on and the sensor button does not work for it (INTEL Centrino Advanced-N 6230).
But anyway I've written a separate launch manager.
Nicer icons, finer volume control, etc.
I start with the Bluetooth key "Firefox"!
With the "battery sensor button" I start the GPU Overckocking ...
Was a lot of work ...
I've tuned a lot
The extrem CPUs are damn (i7-920XM & i7-940XM) expensive.
Cheers -
Wow thats crazy ! Is it very difficult to to reprogram those buttons ? Would you be able to create a tutorial ?
Yeah the extreme versions do sell quite high. I think if you want some extra juice and not worry abotu TDP bottlenecking 840qm would be my choice going from i5. I mean soon you will be looking for another laptop, once new technology comes up and when the 5650 is outdated
Good luck searching -
Is also difficult for me with the language ...
I come from Germany.
In my German forum you will find everything (including all downloads):

The i5 840QM not sold second hand.
Maybe I'll take the i7-740QM.
I asked Eriko0 here (i7-920XM)
Otherwise, the sound cracks!
In addition, the notebook is stronger without the driver.
The driver is only for "HDD RAID" - if at all...
Cheers,
searcher? (tree) -
You're right!
Worthwhile for me is the i7-920XM of Erik0.
With CPU overclocking, there are a lot of power (150% or more compared to the i5-450M)
The i7-920XM is much cheaper than the i7-940XM!
I'm still waiting for Erik0, because of the temperatures in the stress test ...
With 150 Watt power supply I can possibly reach 4GHz!
That would be extreme!
Just at what heat?
Test: Intel Core i7-740QM, 840QM und 940XM
Cheers

I did this and W7 x64 ultimate hangs at the windows start screen.even when loading from a usb to install, will start and run in safe mode when W7 is installed with the i3,changed to the modded bios Aspire 8942G BIOS_3109 Blind-MOD R3 but still hangs,in the bios it shows as genuine intel (R) CPU 000 @ 1.73GHZ?do I have to upgrade to the latest bios?or is there something that I need to enable in this modded bios?any ideas?thanks.
-
This error I am not aware.
Try the latest BIOS (3315)
Best regards from Germany -
I would do what searcher suggested. I am running on stock bios and it picked up my CPU change no problem. Any chance to test the CPU in another unit or perhaps try reformatting and new install of widows in case it's a diver problem ?
-
ok,thanks for the replies,I cant reformat and re install as it hangs on any form of windows starting, maybee because the W7 disk is a live pe disk and starts out with windows running from the disk, will try the new bios but dont want to do it in windows,it has an exe file and a folder for dos,I think I can boot from a bootable usb and execute the exe file?the modded bios was pretty sweet though.
-
Ask for a Biosmod (kizwan > Bios 3315)

Cheers -
Tried the new bios, didnt work, tried swaping memory,my memory is only pc3 8500 but dont think thats it?still cant redo windows as it still hangs on the installer, may have to go back to i3,this is the cpu I bought
Intel i7 820QM 1.73G 8M Socket PGA988 Mobile CPU Process... (160795849735)
it is an engineering sample I believe, could that be the problem?I am useing a ES T9400 now in my 8930 with no problems. -
Do you have another laptop (8930)?
I do not understand...
Cheers -
yes have had an 8930 for 3years now, great machine but cant go any farther with it allready maxed out so I bought the 8942G and will sell the old one,I am starting to think its the ram states 1066 in specs for the cpu ?I read in an review someone put 16GB ram in thiers?price isnt much more.
-
I give up.tried the 10666 ram and same problem, would only run in safe mode, going back to the i3.

Hi !
I have read your article, 1 year ago. It's an excellent article...And I have try to do the same things.
I have i7 820 QM and I have install it in my laptop (the same like in this article Acer Aspire 8942G with a i3 - 330M) with a little bit of thermal paste.
But, actually, I don't understand : When I start my laptop, I have immediatly just a black screen and it shutdowns itself a few seconds after.
I have supposed my motherboard was dead but, no, because now i have reput the i3-330 M cpu. It works
...A problem with my PSU not enought powerfull : I think No, as you say in your article, it's not necessary to change it. An other thing is I have try toi start with the i7 without my second HD and less one RAM barret, to be sure, and, no, the same symptoms come back...
So, my CPU is dead, you think or it may be an other problem ? You will be nice if you have enought time to reply to my message.
Thanx a lot. Regards.
Julien, Lyon,France -
Hi there. I recently upgraded to an i7 840 QM. I used the thermal paste that came with the processor and was getting very high temperatures. The temperature would gradually increase over the space of an hour until it was well into the 80's. I cleaned the processor and used a different paste, Jetart Nano Silver, and now my temperatures are stable but still too hot at 50 degrees idle. I tried some 3d rendering in Photoshop and temperatures went up to 85 degrees. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with my fan? It's not dirty but it doesn't seem to make much noise when the cpu is under stress. I'm a complete newb, Not technical at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Update: Looks like this was a dust issue. Out of desperation I took a vacuum cleaner to the vents in my laptop. The core temperatures dropped by 10 degrees. -
hello
anyone know what is the best CPU to upgrade a 8940g now please ?
thank
