Hello, new here. I'm having a problem with the built in mic on my 5672wlmi. I didn't have a good go with it before doing a clean install of xp pro but I'm pretty sure it was ok. since installing pro and having installed all the drivers the mic is almost completely unresponsive. If I shout it will just pick up even though the record levels are at max. The test hardware facility says it can't detect my voice at all. Any ideas??

the ATI x1400 does work in Linux, but you have to make sure that XFree86 or X.org to use the default Vesa Driver. I've read reports from people having gotten upto 1280x800 resolution with the default VESA driver. You could try that...

Maybe after some time, you can check out ATI's site if they have actually put up some linux drivers...

ATI does say that Linux drivers for the xX00 series are available in the package that they've released ( https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=300)
... But most people say that isn't true... well... till then, I guess it's all about VESA.

ALSO: a version of Linux, "Mepis" does work out-of-the-box and the ethernet etc also works without any issues.

    You could try that...

    Hope this was helpful...

Yes, I have SimplyMEPIS as well as Fedora Core 4 working on my laptop without any problem. Just make sure you pass on 'noacpi acpi=off' options during boot time (atleast for FC4)

What is the minimal amount of work I need to do to get my bluetooth mouse working reliably? I'm really hoping I won't have to go cleaning out the registry...

EDITED TO ADD: Actually, I would love to see a simple set of instructions on what to remove and what to tweak to get this laptop running as well as possible without a re-install.

Anybody who's tweaked to their satisfaction willing to take that on?

    Thanks!

    @Skullnrose:
ME, I do no further tweaks to the display once I've installed the Omega Drivers. That's kind of the reason that I use his drivers - he has tweaked them for gaming, and ease of use - I love the old style Control Panel, not that bloated ATI thing ;) so once installed I just set it and forget it.

Hi everybody, i just got my 5672 and encounter a couple of problems.

    1. My spacebar when looked from at eye level seems to be uneven. The Piece of plastic around the touchpad also seems uneven. Does anyone have the same problems?

    2. Is there anyway i can restict the resume standby to only the power button cos when i put the laptop in the bag, it seems to come in contact with one of the keys on the keyboard which then resumes standby. Today, when i reach home, i opened up my supplied acer notebook bag and realise the notebook was buring hot and critical battery cos it resumed standby. when i touche the touchpad, it was like touching a kettle.

Hope anyone out there can share your views on this issue.

Anybody try overclocking the CPU or GPU?

I've got the omega drivers and ATT installed, but the overclocking options say "disabled". I thought I read somewhere that the x1400 was locked and "couldn't" be OC'd, vague memory... probably wrong. Maybe it just takes something more than ATT.

    What about OC'ing the CPU?

It's been hard for me to find anything that claims to support OC'ing these new mobile chips, let alone support them and run stable.

I would turn on hibernate in the power options of the control panel. Basically, it turns off the computer. But it will boot back in only a few seconds. All of your windows will stay open and everything will lokk the same. Standby turns almost everything off, but things are still running. Power is still used, and heat is still made. It will come back into action sooner. But it is not worth it to me. Try it... hibernate is great. I set my computers to hibernate when to power button is pressed. Only pressing the power button will bring it back.

I like the 5672 but the heat issue some people have talked about concerns me. I do play games and this has been reported to cause the palm rests/touch pad area to get hot.
I went to a CompUSA and looked at one and that area was warm with nothing running.

It looks like Acer makes 4 different english versions.
LX.AA705.104, ram 1gb, hd 100, os xp home
    LX.AA705.106, 2gb, 120, xp home
    LX.AA706.003, 1gb, 100, xp pro
    LX.AA706.005, 2gb, 120, xp pro
Some web sites I have looked at report that the ram is 533MHz and others 667MHz. It looks like the versions with 1gb of ram may have the 533MHz and the 2gb 667 or the xp home versions have the 533 and the xp pro have the 667.

    Fantanstic thread guys ;)

I'm just about to commit my hard earned cash to one of these babies and would appreciate answers to a couple of questions:

:p How does the creating the recovery disk process work when you first power up (what type of DVD is required)?

:p Has anybody used the recovery disk? Does it really restore back to the original factory install?

:p Can anybody recommend how I can use Norton Ghost to make a true image of the factory install? How can I image across a network to my desktop? There's been posts here that talk about a hidden partition - will Ghost handle this?

The reason is that, like most, I wan't to get rid of all the dross but am somewhat nervous about screwing things up.

Your help would be most appreciated

@LucyHi - Firstly, after the machine spends it's first 20 minutes installing basically unattended, all it's software, it asks you to insert a DVD for burning the recovery disc. Have one handy, or you can always do it later, but be sure to do it ;)
Any DVD, whether -R or +R will work. Use a quality disc. Don't use a RW that you might erase later by mistake! ;) Then later, make a spare copy to store anyway somewhere just in case. IMHO. You can also do a subsequent backup using eRecovery, which backs up the drivers and apps only into a more accessable format, which is arguably more useful if you just want to replace a corrupted prog or driver. I have tested this as well ;)
I have also used the recovery disc, it brings your machine back to factory fresh software/driver install and formats the disc first.
AFAIK, Ghost will image your C: drive, and not access the hidden partition. For me Ghost choked and wouldn't image successfully (and I binned it), so I can't guarantee that, but I am 99% that it will not image the hidden partition.
FWIW, get rid of the dross without fear as long as you have those 2 backups of the original system.

Intensecure - Thanks for that :)

One follow-on question: Once I've de-drossed the machine (and fixed some of the bugs mentioned in this thread), I will want to create a new recovery disk. Which bit of Acer bloatware will I need to keep to do this? :p

None. The Acer software contains no such function, it only works with it's original set of images, AFAIK. You will need a 3rdparty prog like Acronis True Image, or NortonGhost.
There, that'll teach you to stick yr tongue out at me..! ;) :D

I played with one of these at Compusa. I thought the build quality was okay from what I could tell. The screen was almost as good as some of the upper end Sony screens. The one thing that bothers me is how to create one partition without a Xp disk. Is there any workarounds for this dilemma?

i've been trying to install winxp pro on this for a while, with no luck. only because i'm trying to use those "unattended" version you can find on the net.

so anyways, because i've been playing around with the partitions, and all these installs of windows, i decided to go back to the DVD eRestore disk. the thing actually detected that the partitions were wrong. (ie, not factory size). but it still went and copied everything over and everthing was like new. ..except i have some weird partitions now (nothing Partition Magic or Formatting can't fix)

i just thought it was interesting how it could detect i changed the partitions.

WOW! A thesis have been written. I was doing some search online for a better price on it and found this topic. Took me some times to finish reading. Excellent research!

I just became a member of this great forum. I never had laptop, always a desktop user, now I have to buy one to send it to my brother. Learned a lot about laptop, thanks to everybody.

I seems to a bit late for the CompUSA deal. ZipZoomFly currently looks like the winner http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=265257

Is there any other place I can find a better deal that you guys know of?

Also, will the US model work in Asia (110V vs. 220V)? Another TravelMate model support this option. I can't seems to find this little info anywhere.

    Thanks.

well.. I have owned two laptops so far... and I've used them both here in the US (110) and in India (240), and I just used a plug converter... not an adaptor. The bar on your cable does the job of the transformer for you! :)

    Hey guys,
I left my wonderful Aspire 1664 for a superb Aspire 5672 and I'm quite happy for the deal.
I'm having some problems with the suspend to disk feature (FN+F4). Sometimes it works but most of the times it gives me a crappy message that goes something like ("Not enough resources to execute the API"... I get the message in Italian, sorry for the translation if it's not correct).
This really sucks because I develop a lot and often hibernate the pc with dozens of open windows to start from where I left.
Has anyone had the same problem?
May it be due to the ePower Management?
I was thinking of uninstalling that huge Empowering Technology package but I must admit there are some interesting features that I don't dislike.

    thank you guys,

From what I read... Maybe one day. Right now it is intended as a replacement to pcmcia. Right now there is nothing that uses the new slot. the slot is very open ended. the limits are the bandwidth of the slot, So I put that in the very maybe category.

Have you tried upgrading the BIOS? It does fix at least one hibernate problem. Look in the 5672 New BIOS thread.

ginu_lee & tejaspadekar, thank you all for your information. I am pretty much determined that I'll buy one.

I went to my nearest CompUSA, they didn't have one. So I guess I'll have to rely on the online pictures (looks nice though).

You're thinking of ExpressCard, which is the CardBus/PCMCIA replacement. ExpressCard uses either USB 2.0 or PCI Express x1 (one lane) as its bus, so it would not be very adequate as a video card replacement; it's about as fast as AGP 1x (or double the speed of PCI). (The video card is PCI Express x16; that is, it uses 16 lanes.)

PCI Express is the bus used for the video, wifi, and lan internally. The wifi card should be replaceable with any compatible card; however, the lan and video most likely are integrated on the motherboard. This is similar to how systems have integrated/onboard AGP video; the video uses the AGP bus, but is on the main system board.

The specs on the laptop say that the video card is pci express which would lead me to believe that it is a card in a slot. That's why I asked about it being upgradable. Has anyone taken theirs apart enough to see if the vid card is soldered onto the MB or in an actual slot?

Thank you for your reply but the problem remained after the BIOS upgrade.

I'm not sure if the problem had already been fixed by Acer on my original XP Home because one of the first thing I did was an upgrade to XP Professional but there is undoubtedly a recently discovered bug in Windows XP (KB909095) that prevents the system from hibernating 80% of the times if you have more than 1GB RAM and you've messed a lot around with heavy programs.

Luckily enough I discovered there was a hotfix patch to resolve this problem.

All I had to do was ask ACER support to send me the patch (Microsoft won't if you have an OEM Version) because having an Italian Windows XP I couldn't find the patch on the net while the English versione is easily downloadable.

I hope this will help other guys who use the suspend mode (which does not consume all the power that standby does) and is so useful when you want to resume your work where you left it the day before!

Well, I pulled the trigger and ordered one... awesome deal at 1199.00. Nothing else comes close to these specs for that price. Should be here Friday, then I'll do a little comparison with my Emachines 6810 which is also a great laptop for the money...

Hi Speedfrk: where'd you get the acer 5672 for 1199.99? You're in the US right.

I ordered one as well I got it for $1195. Bang for the Buck I couldn't find anything close to it. I do have a few reservations though. After I ordered it I realized it doesn't have an ezdock port. I hate where they put the usb ports. Why can't they put atleast one port in the back? Does anyone know if they make a wireless bt usb port or would that be too slow? The second fault I see has to deal with Acers partition of the Harddrive. I think I can fix this though with partition magic. Has anyone tried to remove the partition with PM?
