Does anyone else find it annoying long it takes for the back light on the keyboard to kick in? And is there a way to edit that somewhere? I finish typing whatever I needed to type by the time the back light would turn on. Dos not make sense to me that it takes 5 seconds for a back lit keyboard to light up.

Got my 392 today and it looks good and feels good. still, it's hard to switch from the MacBook where everything "just works".

Can't find the "reverse scrolling" anywhere...I see the Zoom Perfect option in the Elan settings, but a "reverse scrolling" option never shows (I just don't see it). When i install the synaptics driver I can't change anything...like there is no option at all in the settings tab. I'm really confused right now.

And even the back/forward swipe with the touchpad in the browser doesn't work. Crap.

And the 2560x1440 resolution is extremely small, even with 150% scaling. I have to check out if it's better to switch to FullHD.

God, I really hate me right now for switching to Windows8 ;-)

Got my S7-392 yesterday. Sharing my experiences and mainly comparing it to VAIO PRO because people are considering which one to get:

    1. Wifi is working great, unlike the VAIO that uses the same wifi adapter, this one doesn't lose speed drastically when further from the router. It's an important factor.
    2. Compared to VAIO this one feels bulkier :( Yes, at 1.3kg after you get used to 0.95kg of the VAIO it feels already too bulky, but of course its still good enough. The other reason I find it bulkier is because it's physycally bigger, there's like a huge place between the top keys and the screen, totally unused and useless if you ask me.
    3. It's much more beautiful than the VAIO, imho.
    4. Touchpad is awesome, much more smoother and the clicks are easy, on VAIO the clicks are hard
    5. Keyboard is flatter, which I personally like, however it feels like something is not perfect about it. For example when pressing backspace it takes a small small while for it to start deleting, if I plug an external keyboard it goes faster, also on VAIO its very fast. it's like the keyboard is not as responsive. Also when deleting a lot of text you can see that it's like jumpy in the deleting, like the backspace button was released in the middle of the deleting and pressed again. This does not happen with external keyboard, so it's something about the build in keyboard imho, not about the software. even though I type A LOT, I still find it OK, but the VAIO is better in this aspect. Also the keyboard position takes time to get used to and the lack of F buttons, might be annoying for some. I don't have any problems with SPACE as mentioned here and that buttons don't click or something like that.
    6. Resolution is insanely high, which makes the text looks smaaaaaaall. I like that personally, but sometimes it is even too small for me :) When I use the scaling option of Windows, everything looks disgusting, thick, like I am using some very low resolution. of course you can put resolution lower to 1920x1080 and that's it, but then you lost the advantage of this screen, so I am sticking to this one for now.
    7. The laptop is very very quiet. even when it gets louder under load, somehow it's not very audiable, maybe because of the position of the fans or something. that is much improvement compared to VAIO, because there you hear it when there's a CPU load. Also, the moment the load goes away it instantly becomes quiet and when on idle it's SUPER quiet. for me that's very important.

So the only thing that really could be improved is keyboard and the size. The rest is almost perfect.
Let me know if you have any questinos

What irritates me is, that I can't see wheather the "caps lock" is on or off, should there be an indicator somewhere? Also the left shift key is a little bit further "down" than the others.
On the swiss keyboard, the "enter" key is huge, and not splitted like on the US keyboard. That's a plus

I still haven't fixed my touchpad problem and I still don't know how the ideal display settings are (I have exactly the same thoughts like "whatever61" with his comment on point 6).

Right now I have the 2560x1440 resolution with a 150% or 200% scaling, don't know for sure, the S7 is at home, I'm at work ;-)
it looks ok, but some menu or windows (like the touchpad settings) look awful.
I have tried the FullHD resolution, but it wasn't satisfying. The full resolution looks fantastic, just the text is a bit too small.

I'm really desperate with my touchpad.
the Elan drivers do work, but I can't see the option to disable inverse scrolling (not even a grayed out option, only like "light" drivers) and there is no gestures like forward and back in the internet browsers.
And I couldn't find a way to proper install the Synaptics drivers. I tried the one from the Acer website and the one directly from the Synaptics website. They are installed and active, but there are no settings in the settings menu (just the left- and right click).
I disabled everything, uninstalled everything, re-installed multiple times...no success. There are a few people in (non-Acer) forums having the same problem. But I couldn't find a solution.
Is there some magic application to really uninstall every little bit of the drivers? Or is there any other way to fix this? I'm really desperate right now. thanks!

Okay, it seems that my 392 has an Elan touchpad, not a Synaptics...despite i read that it would be a Synaptics.
I got some new Elan drivers and at least the weird scrolling is gone (i can see that option now).

The only thing missing right now is a way to do some touchpad gestures like back/forward in the browser. I haven't figured out that.

Does anyone has a problem with the backspace? it's like when I wanna delete something quickly there's a small small delay between the press and the actual action and also when I keep on deleting it sometimes like stuck for a very small second.
I tried with another keyboard (but on this laptop) and the problem doesn't exist there.

I have configured the keyboard settings to have the shortest repeat delay.

Actually now I tried to just hold the letter "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" and it slightly jumps every 5-th, same happens when deleting.. a bit hard to explain the issue :) Hope you'll understand

So just an FYI to everybody: your screen might be getting scratched by the edge of the trackpad when it's closed.

I noticed it before but thought it was just smudgy stuff. I tried to wipe it off today and it really is scratches. I'll be putting a pad over my keyboard/trackpad whenever I close my computer from now on. It's the top edge of the trackpad rim that's doing it on my machine.

Could anybody with an Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 run HWMonitor or the Windows Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report and tell me what you get as the battery's max or designed capacity? Much thanks.

Got the s7 392 as well since a few days (the one with 2560x1440) and couldn't be more happy! Such a nice machine, sturdy, nice keyboard, flawless working touchpad, silent, fast. Didn't notice any scratches on my display so far, the edges don't see to be sharp on my machine.

The SD card slot is extremely shallow, even moreso than the macbook ones... I'd look into a physically smaller one if possible. Also remember that the SD card slot is likely implemented via USB 2.0 internally, so you'll be looking at 30MB/s read/write speeds max on a gigantic flash drive.

The SSD inside is a standard mSATA slot I believe. It's just one card even though it's RAID 0. It'll cost you more coin but it's user-replaceable.

Hi All, I have owned an S7-392-9890 for 14 days now and I must say that I am quite happy with my S7... :) I changed the factory-installed mSATA SSD to a Samsung 512 GB one. Unfortunately I cannot find the wifi card - seems to me that the wifi card is not easily accessible - originally I planned to change the wifi card to an Intel 7260AC.

I recently got my Aspire S7 and I love it. The keyboard is a bit non-responsive and I really dislike not having the F1-F12 keys and the missing CTRL button on the righthand side of the keyboard. But other than that, I love the portability, speed, battery life, and touchscreen.

I'm indifferent to Windows 8. I can live with it, but would have been happier with Windows 7.

AFAIK, all S7-392 already have 8 GB RAM, and the RAM is soldered, so no we cannot remove and add RAM in S7-392.

At first I also like Windows 7 better than Windows 8. But then I installed StartIsBack and suddenly Windows 8 is OK for me.

Hey guys, I am really close to pulling the trigger on this laptop, but had one question. I've constantly heard and read rumors about the QHD screen coming to the US and am wondering if it would be worth waiting for. There are some fantastic deals on this right now for the Black Friday weekend, so I'm not sure if the wait would be worth the money. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I also do a lot of typing every week, I've read comments about the keyboard not registering. Is that just due to the low key travel or is it actually a design flaw?

Hi Juilin, I cannot comment about whether it would be worth waiting for S7 with QHD screen, but I can answer your second question: I am a touch typist and so far I found the keyboard is always registering. The only issue I have is, I feel the keyboard repeat rate is a bit weird, i.e. sometimes there is a delay although I have set the shortest repeat delay and the fastest repeat rate. But maybe it's just me.

    Hi Guys,

Just picked up the Aspire S7-392-6402 Ultrabook yesterday in Canada from the acer store. I just have one question regarding the left shift key. From all the pictures of the laptop the shift key on the left is just like the same size on the right, but the one I got the shift key is much smaller on the left and beside it is the forward slash button.

Does anyone else have the same thing? I'm so about to return this thing as I keep on hitting the damn '/' every time I need to use the shift key.
    thanks

I have the exact same model.
It's because Canadians are given the bilingual keyboard due to having both English and French as official languages.

You would have to order a model from the US in order to have an english keyboard.

I've found a workaround to this issue through rebinding the bilingual keys via registry edits.
You can refer to this video, the tweak helps a lot.

<strike>I thought that there were 2 mSATA ssds, one soldered to the board and one removable mSATA for its raid 0 configuration.
How did you configure the drives when upgrading one of the mSATAs?</strike>

    EDIT:
Looks like there's only one mSATA port, I would assume you switch the bios configuration from RAID to AHCI.
Larger capacity at the cost of read and write speeds.

Yes there's only one mSATA port inside the S7-392, and you're right, I switched the bios config from RAID to AHCI. I use my S7-392 as primary working computer, so I prefer larger capacity than read and write speeds. AHCI mSATA SSD's speed is fast enough for me.

Has anyone tried the new intel wifi driver that is showing up in Windows update as of 1/8/14? Also, my USB 3.0 Blu-ray writer only functions correctly if I disable the bios option for a USB 3.0 controller. Does anyone know anything about that issue, and if so, is there a solution?

I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago and up until today had no real issues with it.

I'd had a few wifi dropouts but not many at all. The real issue that I've just found is that when I connect it to my TV via a HDMI cable it cuts out my wifi. I've updated my display and wifi drivers and it still happened. I've tried it with a couple of HDMI cables and different TV's but no change.

Has anyone else had this issue and slightly more importantly does anyone have a clue on how to fix it?

    Hi all,

I have tried basically everything to perform a clean Windows 7 install with no luck, the computer freezes on the windows 7 booting sequence.
Also, i can't seem to find anything online directly relating my problem with an Acer Aspire s7-392.

Has anyone had any luck with installing a different OS (hopefully Windows 7) on their 392? :)

    Thanks

I've had no issues with my screen getting scratched. I've been on the lookout for it because I read the same comments. My leather case seems roomier than the case on the s7-391 which may help, but fortunately I haven't had the need to keep a piece of paper between the keyboard and screen while closed.

Sort of? I put a screen protector on mine and it was heavily scuffed where the touchpad was. The clearance is extremely slim and the screen protector likely made it too thick at that point.

It looks exactly as claimed in this review:
Acer Aspire S7 review (2013): the second time's a charm for Acer's flagship Ultrabook

The storage is an mSATA ssd, it's rare finding mSATA ssds but i think it would be more worthwhile to get the 128gb and upgrade it.

I've personally upgraded my 128gb with a 480gb Crucial M500 and it's working perfectly fine.
You would also have to switch the setting from RAID to AHCI.

Have you tried enabling the F12 boot menu option in bios, then selecting the USB with the installation files to boot from?

I have opened my S7-392 to change the mSATA SSD to Samsung 512GB (I bought the i7 model with 256GB storage), but unfortunately I did not take any photos. Anyway, the storage is not soldered so you can upgrade it yourself.

It's quite easy: just unscrew the 11 screws using a Torx screwdriver (no. 6) and lift the bottom cover.

Does anyone have any information about the s7-392 (instant go) version listed in the driver downloads portion of the acer support website. I tried to install the live updater, but it seems stuck on reboot needed even though I've rebooted several times.

I am looking at the 392-9434 with its WQHD 2560X1440 screen. I have 2 questions, please help.

    1. Saw a review that stated this hi-res screen has poor viewing angel with quick drop-off of picture quality with increased angle. Some one with this machine, can you confirm this?

    2. Does this model come with the leather case?

    EDIT:
I purchased this Ultrabook at the Microsoft Store, $1,499 plus tax. The screen is the same or better than my IPad Air and I have no issue with view angle. I did get the very elegant leather sleeve carrying case. This is a class act and I am having fun with it. Never thought a touch screen on a notebook was of much value right up until I got this and what a great treat to finger scroll and select boxes, eliminates the need for a mouse. the touchpad is great and everything works great out of the box. I am even starting to like Win 8.1. Glad I have this notebook.

Hi Feral1, how about the brightness of the WQHD screen? Have you by any chance compared your screen to the older S7's FHD screen?

On a side note, I just changed my SSD (again) - this time to a Samsung Evo 1 TB. Used Macrium Reflect to clone the drives without any problem.

It is a bright as I could want. I use the ultrabook unplugged most of the time so I don't drive it at maximum brightness to conserve the battery. I love the screen but still dealing with some programs like my on line poker app comes so small I am having some difficulty seeing all the info I need to select games and play. I am new to Win 8 so it has been a challenge but slowly I am getting things to work right.

I am interested in your changing the SSD. As this is an ultrabook is the SSD smaller than the one in my 1830T? Did you use the free version of Macrium Reflect?

This is the mSATA SSD I bought: Samsung 1 TB 840 EVO mSATA internal SSD. I used Macrium Reflect Server v5.

    Hi guys,

I'm planning on buying the Aspire S7-392-9439 in a few weeks and I have a few questions.

    1. Has anyone here tried to run some games on it? Preferably MechWarrior Online. I'm going to be moving to another city for work related reasons and won't have my desktop computer for a few months. I was wondering if this S7 can handle some gaming as well.

    2. What's the battery life like if you're working on spreadsheets a lot?

    3. Can it handle Adobe Photoshop?

    4. In general, have you guys noticed some major performance or quality issues with this notebook?

    5. What comes in the box?
