Intel shipped x25-m drives with a spacer that allowed the drive to be used with either 7mm drive bays, or what is standard in most laptops, 9.5mm:

Intel X25-M G2: Dissected and Performance Preview - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

Mine also came with this spacer.

Unfortunately, my drive is in my desktop, so I'm not willing to put it in my future 1830t :p

EDIT: This page on Intel's site lists which models of the x25-m came with a spacer:

    http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/apac/eng/products/nand/feature/index.htm

The 9.5mm ones use a spacer.

The tests performed in this forum to do not bear that out. Nirslsk got a 3DMark06 score of 1097 on the i3 model with Intel graphics, while I got a score of 1297 on my Acer 721 with ATI graphics. Keep in mind the Acer 721 only has a single core processor, so I think it's fairly certain the ATI graphics are faster than the Intel HD graphics, at least as implemented in these notebooks.

Here's the link to Nir's post:

I thought that benchmark was for the non UM processors. the UM processors have a slower clockspeed and no turbo on the i3-330UM and, my rudimentary understanding, was that also translated to lower graphics performance than the 4225. I could be totally off-base so perhaps someone that knows more can chime in.....

Search "A180-116*" to see all Acer 11.6" models they have available. You will often see different results from time to time because they will pull models from the site if they are sold out. Also, "G180-116*" will display the 11.6" Gateway models they have in stock.

Since it was all backordered, I don't know how it's going to work but...when I placed my "pre"order, it was through Bing and it showed the cashback amount on the page under the price. However, nothing is pending.

Anyone know if Bing will still work on backordered items? It hasn't shipped or been fully processed so I don't know if my card's even been charged.

    Have you tried 1810Tray?

It does wonders for 1810T,it may work for 1830T.

No luck with 1810Tray on the 1830T. I was looking for a PC health status option in the BIOS, but it's InsydeH2O and offers very few configuration settings. Apparently it hasn't yet been unlocked on the Acer.

    hi,

just ordered a 1830t-5434G32NKI with i5-430um. The i5-520um Version costs 100 Euro extra here in Germany and according to the spec sheet of Intel it should have a very similar performance.

i just tested the acer with i3 and 500 gb hd a bit in a shop. i tried out the muppets bohemian rapsody in hd on youtube, and i wasnt really convinced that it was in 1080 as fluid as in 720. i wouldnt really mind that, im just curious how this would be working when hooked up on an full hd tv via hdmi, as i want to use this little thingy also as portable video player (like if i go to a friend to watch some movies). Therefore i am dying for a review that tells me how long a movie or a stream can be played on a single battery charge. very very curious.
also, like now, im hanging on my balcony with my hp dv5 and watching some family guy and surfing the net for the cheapest price for the 1830. i cant wait for a comparison of brightness. not enough brightness would be a killer for me.
and last but not least, i cant decide between black, silver and brown. in stores in switzerland its always in black.

im sorry to only post questions and not really about technical things...

Can't really help you with your other questions as I don't own yet a 1830T, but regarding the colors, it seems to me that only the lower end models (like the u5400) will come in something else than black. I can also tell you to avoid brown at all cost. :D

The cash back amount, around 80 dollars, showed up on my bing account the next day.

Still says backordered on the tiger direct website. I don't mind waiting, 615 is a really good price for the i5 version of this laptop.

Hopefully it's here in 2-3 weeks.

    Hi.

Just ordered my 1830T-i5 from Amazon in Germany. I would like to know if the keyboard is the same as the 1810Tz. I'm from Portugal and i would like to replace it.
I searched through the discussion but i found contradicting comments.

    Thanks.

    Amazing..
My wife's AS1830T-3721 i5-430UM arrived here in CA today from Amazon.
Unpacked it, but will wait for her to turn it on.

Already noticed a couple of negatives.
The battery color is a very dark grey, but the computer is black.
Doesn't look right... especially because the battery in my 1810tz matches very well.
The batteries are similar, but definitely not interchangeable. I tried swapping.
And the 1830 battery sticks out 3/16" beyond the rear of case, as if there
had been a design error. The 1810 battery is flush along the back.

Good thing is that the display now opens 160 degrees as
opposed to maybe 130 degrees in the 1810.

Bad thing is both the left and right mouse buttons feel weird.
Loud definitive clicks toward the centers:
quiet mushy clicks at the outer ends of the buttons.
A mechanical thing that might get better after some use.

BTW... for folks who know about and want a SSH solid state hybrid drive.
Almost as fast as an SSD, but high capacity & much lower cost.
See this video comparing an SSD, SSH, 7200HD, and a 10,000HD.
TigerDirect has the Momentus XT 500GB for $129
    minus 12% Bing cash back = $113
Free shipping & no tax for most states.

    Expect mid august,

Acer australia are having issues supplying the 5800mAh batteries, you can purchase the 1430 at the moment, same specs and casing as the 1830 just with a smaller battery (4400mAh) and possibly pickup a better battery down the track.

The school I work for just took the plunge on 450 1430's. delivery next week. man I'm going to have fun imaging them all q_q.

I'm completely with you on the buttons. It's by far my biggest peeve with the unit. Although as IKilledYourHamster discovered, tightening the screws on the bottom does help the problem quite a bit. Just be careful not to overtighten, them screws don't always easily loosen up again without stripping a bit. At least a few of mine did. Anyway yeah, I'm pretty annoyed with the buttons. Even with the screws tightened and the mushy zones almost gone they still take way too much effort to press. I can barely even muster the effort first thing in the morning. I'm leaning toward keeping the unit since there just isn't anything better in that size category out there, but the touchpad buttons are certainly making me debate whether or not I should.

Agreed! I just ordered my Momentus drive through Tiger Direct with Bing Cashback. However it is not in stock currently. :( But that's ok, I'm willing to wait to get the cash back. If someone can not wait, the drive is in stock at Newegg but there is not much of a bing cashback and you have to pay $6 for shipping.

I took delivery of my 1830T on Monday, however I made arrangements to return it to Amazon ($10 shipping cost) due to the better price of buying the i3 model from TigerDirect with cash back. 12% off is a great deal. Yes, I am a cheapskate. :p It was tough not to keep it but I had my wife do it while I was at work so I didn't even put my hands on it. That's probably all for the better. The TigerDirect shippment should be here Thursday. Can't wait. :D

I have the AS1410 and I am used to the buttons. They are really easy to reach without having to strain or twisting and need very little pressure to engage.
I recently bought a AS3810 and hated the "setback" buttons! I returned it and picked up another AS1410 (the Gateway version). To each his own I guess.

Not having a way to compare laptop setups that only differ on the IGP, that still tells us little about actual Radeon 4225 vs Intel GMA HD performance deltas. However, since I guess most won't be tinkering with laptop innards, it is more productive to compare models like runemark did.

Myself, I would love to see a three-way comparison between an Acer TM8172, the K625-equipped Acer 1551 and an Asus Lamborghini VX6 (the latter mostly to see how its Ion2 discrete graphics stack up).

That uses ATI hardware and not NVIDIA. Until Adobe offers ATI Stream/OpenCL enhancements, I have to have an NVIDIA GPU. Also, the TM2T is over $1,000, placing it too far from the 1830T price. Thanks, though.

I know where most people think it comes from (Firesign Theatre), but it is complete coincidence. I've been using this avatar since the dawn of the Internet - it's a mashup of my real name and the way my old football coach mispronounced it. I thought it was funny and it stuck. Sorry to burst le bubble.

Battery life, games and 3Dmark06 - sure. I can't do WoW, since I don't play it, but hopefully the other stuff can give you an idea of how it'll run.

I think I might actually make a video once I get it. Look at the build, how it multitasks, runs flash and regular video, games, etc.

Here's another possible GPU/ultralight. The Gigabyte M1125 was on the Gigabyte site up till a few days ago. I noticed it a week ago and posted in the tablet site. Tablet PC Forums, Discussion and Support - View Single Post - Gigabyte M1125 Competition for the TM2T? It was to have an I5 CPU and a NVIDIA 310M GPU. Display is 11.6" 1366 x 768. No word on level of brightness that I could find. 2 USB 3.0 and 1 Esata plus wireless and BT 2.1. 6 cell 7800 mah and 1.3 webcam round out the specs. I could not find the wieght.

Planned release in August/September. It has since been pulled from the website. I hope for adjustment of specs.

    Bronsky

    Odd coincidence about the name.

i tried browsing this thread and read some reviews, but couldn't find the answer. this may be a little tech savy question, but how does the power consumption compare to the older generation of separate ULV + 4500MHD chip as opposed to this 330UM with on die IGP? the most important thing is battery life for me. how long is the battery lasting you guys on one charge and typical usage?

I've been setting up and using my wife's new 1830t i5-430 since Tuesday.
Took some learning time because she needs the multi-language features
now available with Win7 Ultimate, that previously required a hard drive
partition and the installation of more than one operating system.

Just wanted to say that I've been using both the new 1830t and my old
Acer 1810tz (SU4100) side-by-side and have rarely noticed the 1830t being faster.
Of course the 1830 measures faster, but most users won't notice.

BTW... happy to report that Acer has dumped the Synaptics touch pad in the 1830t.
But can't figure out how to change the sensitivity level in the Alps Electric touch pad control panel.

But I still can't decide between these ones:
    US$ 549.99 Acer Aspire AS1551-5448
    US$ 598.00 Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-3927
Is the US$ 50.00 difference worth it?

Go for the 1830T if 5+ hours of battery life is important. Otherwise, go for the 1551, as it has better graphics (but only 3+ hours of battery). That's my 2 cents! :)

Nice! They compared the Intel GMA HD, the Radeon 4225 and the Ion 2 :

"Compared to the 1810TZ, the 1830T's graphics scores were much improved, owing to the upgrade to an Intel HD GPU with 128MB of memory. The 1830T scored 1278 on 3DMark06, more than double the 1810TZ (586), and about 200 points higher than average. However, the 1830T is rivaled by the Aspire One 721, whose ATI Radeon HD 4225 Graphics (with 384MB of memory) produced a score of 1237. The Nvidia Ion GPU in the Asus Eee PC 1201PN did even better, notching 1,329 in the same test."

But battery life is waaay down (thanks to the core i5) :

"The greater processing power of the 1830T means that users will see less endurance compared to previous generation Timelines. On the LAPTOP Battery Test (web surfing via Wi-Fi) this laptop lasted 5 hours and 53 minutes. That's not bad at all, considering the ultraportable average is 5:34, but the dual-core Pentium 1810TZ saw 8:47. Then again, the AMD Athlon II-powered Aspire One 721 lasted just 3:15."

Welp, just got my 1551 and it seems like the screen doesn't work.

Anyone know which I'm better off going with - Acer repair or Amazon replacement?

Amazon replacement. They are very helpful and it's easy to return anything not in your fault.
