1810tray doesn't work on 1830T and as far as I know there isn't something similar for the 1830T.

Okay, does anyone care to get wireless (and wired) networking up and running under Ubuntu? It's a little involved, but it does work...but I hate to take the space if no one cares. If someone does care and there is a way to post something like a text document (I'm new to this forum) let me know and this can cut down on space too.

I would really like to know.
Also, almost done the battey drain test, 40 minutes left to go. -
The pricing of UL notebooks and netbooks is very interesting. The Lenovo IdeaPad S12 is $499 compared to the Acer 1830T at $699. Yet look at the specs: 1.6 Ghz Atom vs 1.7 Ghz i5; 1 GB RAM vs 4 GB RAM; 160 GB HDD vs 500 GB HDD; 1280 x 800 resolution vs a full 720p; 10/100 Ethernet vs 10/100/1000 Ethernet and no bluetooth. The Acer 1830T is very competitively priced for the features you get, being substantially more computer than a standard Atom based netbook.

Thanks for the tip!

Congrats on your new laptop! I'm very happy to hear the mouse buttons don't have any problems. It's starting to sound as if all but the very first units are free of these issues. I shipped my i3 and i5 units with a heavy heart back to Amazon yesterday, but it sounds like I might be able to get a proper replacement very soon.

Could we have more feedback about the battery life with the i3 using only websurfing with WIFI...
In France, i3 has the bluetooth :
Acer Aspire 1830T-33U3G32n :: Materiel.net
I have a second question : do you think that SSD's increase battery life ? Is there a recent review that shows some graphics to compare ?
Thanks -
It mostly depends on the SSD in question, here is one example:

Question to acer 1830 owner :
I would like to know if bios contains overclocking options (cpu, graphics, ...)
Thanks by advance for answering -
I would also like to know this info..
Also, it might be a good idea to post the info here:

I ran the Acer 1830T last night on batteries with power saver mode on and the battery meter indicted six plus hours left. I didn't stay up all night to test it, but it appears to me if you use power saver mode to cut the screen consumption, you should get six hours or close to it, enough for two in-flight movies. Given the stated advertised time is 8 hours, that seems reasonable.
I'm very surprised to hear they put the bluetooth in a country specific model, but congrats on that. I think the ability to add mice and keyboards to such a small computer is very important. -
I would assume, whatever is standard implementation procedure for a UL i5 using this chip set is what would be in the bios. I doubt Acer did anything out of the ordinary they wouldn't need to do to implement this processor and chip set in the smallest physical space possible. Otherwise, I seriously doubt it would be added in a netbook configuration.

I'm trying to decide between the SU7300 or the Core i3. In Canada, the 1830T-3730 w/ i3 comes with 4GB of ram and a 500GB hard drive. I presume that the above score for the i3 is the U.S. edition with 3GB of ram? Will that extra 1 GB in the Canadian edition improve performance enough to differentiate it from the SU7300? -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Correct, there are no overclocking or performance enhancing BIOS options.
I would say yes. Despite the slower clock speed you have architectural advances from being a Nehalem processor, plus Hyper threading helps. And along with a full 4GB of ram, the i3 will perform better.
That image shows how much better the i5-430UM is over an SU7300, and the i3 is lower, but still better. -
Awesome, thanks!! Alrighty, then! I'm starting to get excited over an i3. I'm going on vacation in three weeks so I cannot wait for the i5 to get here. I shall console myself with the thought that the i5 will cost $100 more anyway.
-
Just want to throw this in ... you can overclock the 1810 and probably get close to the 1830's speed (of course you void your warranty and you need to be good at soldering, but it's an option).
OR ... you can add a couple of 100 bucks and get an alienware m11x, that you can actually play games on (the entry version actually uses an overclocked su7300, but i3, i5 and i7 are available). The runtime is also better than the 1830 ... oh, and it has an illuminated keyboard
Seems like a dumb move by acer to go from cheap/awesome battery life to average price/average battery life. -
I'm not a techie person so I find the idea of overclocking an 1810 to be intimidating. The 1830-i3 only costs $50 more so this option is more appealing to me. The illuminated keyboard is a tough one to walk away from, tho.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Since when do you need to solder something to overclock? And as for the 1810 overclocked beating the 1830 stock, don't know about that since architectural differences may still give the Core i an advantage.
And the M11x weighs a pound more and not everyone likes its looks. And the Core 2 powered M11x is not overclocked by default.
Acer put in the latest processor, not Acer's fault that it happens to not give the same battery life as a Core 2 Duo. Also, the i3 1830 is cheaper than the SU7300 1810, and the i5 1830t only about $60 more. Not sure how the 1810t is "cheap". -
Microsoft is still offering BING cash back but only until July 30th.

The 1830T with the i5 is a superior performance machine and 6+ hours of battery life for that processor is very good indeed. I fail to see the obsession over sacrificing the i5 technology for possibly another hour of battery time. It is amazing to me to have an i5 chip set in a computer this small and this light and this price point.

Hi,
I just got my 1830T w/i5 CPU. The fan seems to be running at high speed. It's definitely high enough to be noticable in a quiet room. Does anybody have any recommendations or personal experiences with their 1830T w/i5 CPU on reducing the fan speed? I tried ThrottleStop to slow the the CPU speed, but the fan speed seems doesn't seem to slow down.
I looked around this forum and it seems like there's no way to undervolt Arrandale CPUs and no way to control the fan on the 1830T (yet).
Anybody can help?
Thanks. -
I have the TM8172 and have found the fan to be spinning up and down when plugged into the AC, without any thermal issues. I then changed the battery/power settings of windows under "CPU power control/system cooling rule" [Prozessorenergieverwaltung/Systemkühlungsrichtlinie] to "passive" (passiv/active are the options). That stopped the needless spinning of the fan. But I haven't done a LinX test afterwards (it reached 75°C for both cores with my i3 300UM after 10minutes).

A very useful cheap and easy upgrade for the 1830T would be to replace the Broadcom WiFi card with an intel 6200 WiFi card.I don't know if the Broadcom is a full size mini Pci-e card ,but even if it is it would be easy to fit in the slot the half size Intel card. The gains in reception would be considerable.
-
Given the size of the 1830T, especially the thickness, I doubt there is anything under that keyboard but a single small pc board with the broadcom chip soldered in. You won't find any pci buss connectors on the board I am sure.
-
The Broadcom is a mini-PCIe accessible when opening the back panel. The Broadcom is on the left, 2 DDR3 DIMM slots in the middle and the HDD on the right.

The card is half height. I just bought an Intel 6200 from Amazon for $27.46, should be here in a couple days. -
Thanks. I set the cooling policy to passive for both. But the fan is still on full blast.
I'm also getting pretty sucky battery life on this unit. It' only lasting about 5.5 hours. Using Outlook and light surfing.
Dumb question: The Acer ePower Management tool, how do I bring that up? I see ePowerEvent.exe and ePowerTray.exe loaded in Task Manager. But I don't know how to bring up this tool to configure it. Sorry for the noobie question, but this is my first Acer. -
I just got the i5 version of this notebook from Tigerdirect, so far I think it's great. But I cannot find extra batteries for sale online, anyone locate them ? Also I plan to install Ubuntu pretty soon so I appreciate the work on locating drivers, etc.
-

That should take care of the Broadcom/Ubuntu driver issues. Broadcom sucks!
-
Because I have already done it(not on a1830T)keep in mind that you cannot screw a half height card on a slot for a full size miniPCIe card(there are no holes in the middle).Even if you don't screw it it stays very secure. If you want it even more secure you have to devise your own method involving tape or silicon or some small pieces of foam. All and all it's pretty easy though...
edit:It may cost $27.46 but it's worth every penny!!! -
This just confirms my feeling that the ultra-light 11.6 inch notebooks is the hot new computer category. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for Best Buy to figure this out.

I can't find it on there, can you please provide a link?

The i5 version at tigerdirect is now out of stock, may return at some point

Just finished the rollout of our 450 Aspire 1430's (1830T's with a smaller 4400mAh battery)
Had 15 DOA's in the batch, no hard DOA (wont turn on) just little anoyances, like dead HDD's LED's etc.
Had alot of quality control issues that i have passed back to Acer, about 90% of the units had their back panels not popped in correctly at all points. also had a few with different serial numbers from the lable to whats hardcoded in the BIOS.
Otherwise very happy with them all

What are you talking about???
Did I miss something???

Just finished setting up my Acer i5 1830T with all my software development stuff. I can tell already that this chip burns a Dual Core 2.66 Ghz P8800 processor. It is real snappy. Still having a hard time believing my entire software development life is sitting in this little tiny machine. Amazing.

When the PLL is locked by the TME, which is basically a "hardware" lock on not being able to use something like SetFSB to modify the PLL frequency. (Of course, this is a bit different for Arrandale now). Acer locked the PLL with the TME on the 1410 and 1810's.
It's pretty well documented and not for the faint of heart. I think only a small hand full of NBR folks even did it since it involves SMD soldering skills. There's a very high chance you could permanently brick your notebook.
Cheers,
Kermee -
Just took the i3 1830t on my first cross country flight. I was able to watch the daily show, one DVD (into thin air, about 1:30), one blu-ray (moon, 1:30), another episode of the daily show and read a book on the Kindle PC for about 40 minutes before getting to a 4% battery life remaining when I shut down.
This was using the default Power Saver profile and wifi turned off.
Not too bad. I was pretty pleased with the performance. Although, getting two full length movies might be a challenge. Of course, I should be reading more anyways.
The glossy screen is sharp but man is it reflective. Lots of bright lights on the plane to make it hard to see the screen. I had to run the screen brightness at about 50% to make it enjoyable. -
Ok say you want to put an ssd in this notebook,I have finally got windows 7 on a usb stick, what folder or how can you back up some of the programs so you can use them on a fresh install of windows? Thanks

I just posted my hands-on findings of the 1830T-3927:
DailyTech - Hands On With Acer TimelineX 1830T
I must say that I really, REALLY like it. -
I like it too.Apart from the technical part which was great you have some excellent writing skills.

My biggest concerns holding me back from buying this were hd playback from a hard drive (I don't care about hd youtube), build quality (flex, etc.), and money, and this review answered those concerns. Thanks!
EDIT: And battery life! -
did anybody compare the battery life with the i3 vs i5 version?
