    For 1830T Linux Users:

My Ubuntu 10.04 would not put sound through to the headphone jack. It would cut off the speakers when I plugged in my earbuds... but no sound to the earbuds.

SOLUTION: Click this link to get the Alsa Upgrade

NOTE: At the bottom of the first post (by Soundcheck) download the script (AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.tar) and then find the section in the post that says: "Short Alsa-Upgrade script install instructions:"

Follow those directions meticulously and you'll have it fixed!

It takes a while to download and unpack all the dependencies but the compiling is only a couple minutes and the install takes a few seconds.

    hey jayayess

you say that your fan is loud
is it always on as well? and if so, is it always on and loud?
also, do you notice a difference with the fan when it's plugged in vs. on battery

    thanks

I had sound from the speakers right away. Did you turn the volume all the way up and check the sound properties? I installed the 10.04.1 version (latest released & updated one, I believe). I haven't been using Ubuntu very much because of poor power management... laptop runs warm and battery life not good. I know there are some adjustments to ACPI you can make but I haven't investigated that yet or made any changes... been too busy tweaking Windows 7 for the SSD.

The next release (10.10) due out on Oct. 10th, will have the newer kernel which will have TRIM support built in. I'm hoping it also includes some power management features for the HM55 chipset as well.

Finally got this original 1830t i5 system migrated to a new 64GB Kingston SSD.
    WOW... this machine is flying.
Can't believe how fast it feels!

But take a look at the screen shot of my HD allocation.
I've only got 22GB of the 64GB left after installing only
OfficePro and a couple other apps.

There is an empty 11GB "Recovery Partition"
that I don't seem to have any way to delete
or add onto my C drive using Win7 Disc Management.
    Any ideas?

That's strange. That recovery partition shouldn't be listed as "empty". If you assign a drive letter to it, you should be able to see it's contents. You'll have to set "view" settings to show hidden and system files. Maybe your cloning software had a problem copying that partition.

Anyway, you can delete it by booting from a Linux LiveCD and using GParted. However, that may make your drive unbootable, I'm not sure. If your cloning software had to downsize partitions to get them to fit on the SSD, that may be the cause. Another way is put PartEdMagic on a USB stick and boot from that. Windows Diskmgmt.msc is very limited in what it will allow you to do. I didn't do any cloning to my SSD, I did a clean install of Win 7 Ult. x64 because I didn't want the recovery partition on my SSD and was afraid re-sizing issues would cause a problem.

    Two tips:
    1. http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...l-possible-freeing-up-diskspace-new-post.html
    2. If you create a bootable USB key with a partition manager it should be easy to delete the partition (Acronis Disk Director would do the job).

    Thanks to raydabruce and Phil.
The Acronis demo let me see that the 11GB drive was actually named PQSERVICE without a drive letter.

Did some quick research and found that PQSERVICE contains Acer's full OS backup, which I don't need on the 64GB SSD. Especially because I still have the original 500GB with the same PQSERVICE partition.

I used freeware called "MiniTool Partition Wizard" to delete and reformat the missing 11GB.
See the screen shots and thanks again.

could some of you guys be so kind and post up screen shots of your temps using HWMonitor?

or, just reply back with your temps during idle and during use

I'm trying to determine whether my computer runs hot since the fan is notably ALWAYS on
i know it's a bios setting that we can't change, but i still want to make sure my temp levels are similar to other acer 1830ts

It's quiet when Idle and starts working when I do something.

It's fairly quiet though, it's doesn't disturb me. The 1810tz with SU4100 was more quiet.

hey phil, no it does not do that...
at first, i thought you meant your screen distorted at the point you applied pressure to from the lid, which all would do, but yours turned green

but after i saw the video, i realized your whole screen was turning green

    it doesn't seem normal

and i hear you about sending it into acer, i'm always trying to avoid that as well...

I just flexed the HECK out of my screen because you got me paranoid. It did not turn green like in your video.

When you flex your screen in your video your whole screen changes colors 1. globally, 2. uniformly, and 3. simultaneously.

It is well known that putting pressure on an LCD can change color due to the pressure disturbing the liquid crystal matrix (warping), but those changes are:
    1. local to the pressure (they don't spread globally across the whole screen)
    2. the color changes are random (rainbow colors and not just a single color like in your video)
    3. the colors fade in and out at different rates from the point of pressure.

The behavior being displayed in the video you posted is not normal LCD color warping behavior.

The color flipping you are seeing seems to be an electrical problem. Perhaps the video cable/ribbon is getting pinched by your flexing? Or perhaps it is some kind of circuitry/wiring in the bezel that is being pinched/disconnected.

Since your picture does not disappear it seems like the flexing is causing a break in the signal for a single color signal.

    > Amazon sells the i3 version for $599 and the i5 version for $699

Amazon (themselves) isn't selling the 1830T-3721 (i5) right now. The only one listed is from TigerDirect, who I wouldn't buy from.

This puzzles me because the Amazon listing was there a few days ago. I would have thought that they would have kept their own (Amazon) listing and just said "currently out of stock" like they usually do. I'm trying to figure out if this means something.

Hmmm. i5 not on newegg or buy.com either. What's happening?

If after installing new graphics drivers your WEI rating went down, check the Intel control panel and make sure it's set at maximum performance.

Mine was set to maximum battery life, even when plugged in.

    ________________

I replaced my C300 SSD with a Kingston V+. Batterylife has gone up by 30 minutes. Battery Bar reports 6:33 now.

Yeah, I checked that before I ran the test. I'm using the ppm and processor tweaks you posted in the SSD thread. Maybe that's affecting it... (slightly lower CPU speed) -- either that or the Acer ePowermanagement service. But it's okay, I don't really care about Aero ratings anyway. I like to use the latest drivers, even if it costs a bit in performance, because newer drivers usually have some problems fixed in them.

I suspect they are no longer in production. At least, not at the moment. Acer did the same with the AS1410 (SU2300 CPU). They made so many, then just stopped. Maybe an 18 40T will soon take its place.

    Update for LINUX users:
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 (beta). New kernel with built-in support for SSDs (TRIM) in the mass-storage driver.
Atheros ethernet works out of the box.
(don't know about Broadcom... but Intel wireless also works OOB)
Sound and Headphone jack works as supposed to
    Fn+F7, F8 & F6 work (haven't tried Sleep yet)
    Sound and Brightness controls work
Touchpad (ALPS) works but no scrolling or gesture features

The beta seems stable, so far. Final release on 10/10/2010.

Right-click on the network manager icon and click "enable wireless". Your wi-fi light should come on and it will start scanning for signals. After a few seconds you can click on the icon and pick an SSID (network) to connect to.

Well, you can tell it's a beta -- obviously still needs some work on the GUI but overall it runs well on my 1830T after installing all the upgrades it offers after the initial install. It was nice not to have to manually compile and install a driver for the ethernet hardware.

The ratings drop was with "Maximum Performance" enabled before and after installation of the new drivers. Good advice though.

I'll go out on a limb and say that the i5-470UM will perform faster than the i5-430UM. It looks like the only change is the clock/boost speed.

    1.2/1.73ghz vs 1.33/1.86ghz

Noticeable in benchmarks, not as noticeable in real life.

Where are you seeing it? What section of Device Manager? Does it have a "bang" on it (yellow triangle with "!") ??

If so, it's either bluetooth or Intel AMT. Probably the bluetooth.
