I know.. not the best place to post this.
But it is sooo nice to have the advantage of
a high res display desktop on our little 11.6" notebooks.

Its a simple but somewhat hidden set of options in Win 7.
Take a look at the sample of my current desktop.

hey guys. just wondering. On my WEI, my graphics shows 2.4. but I noticed that others' ratings were 3.3, 3.4. I made a clean install of win7 after installing my SSD and already downloaded the latest intel HD graphics driver. Am i missing something? why is my graphics rating so low? thanks for any replys

Hi... Anyone try using the media card for readyboost? Seems like the linmit is 2GB for the reader. Is that true? I have 4GB RAM. Would like to use the slot and be able to leave the card in all the time, as opposed to the Thumb Drive...

1830TZ units seem to be with Alps...but I don't really feel it much worse than my 1810T which has Synaptics...although I had to play a bit with settings after a complete reinstall.

THanks a lot DJ. I got the 3505 from Overstock like you - should be arriving in a few days. I've heard numerous folks getting the i3-380UM (1.3ghz)...is this a product refresh or just bad labeling you think?

EDIT: Also, can you confirm you have the Intel 1000 wifi? I already purchased the Intel 6200, assuming the 1830T shipped with crappy broadcom, but the 1000 isn't so bad?

Yes, mines is the Wifi Link 1000. It seems like Acer has used this model quite a bit on their aspire models. Much better than any atheros or broadcom I've ever used. Good luck on that. Who knows what the luck of the draw will bring.

So I installed an SSD into my 1830T, and did a clean windows install.

The only way I've found to disable tapping on the touchpad is to install the Alps driver from Acer's website.

This is all well and good, except that every time I start windows, it asks me if I want to run apoint.exe, ApMsgFwd.exe, Apntex.exe, and HidFind.exe, and requires an admin password check. There is a checkbox to tell windows not to always ask for this file, but it does every time I startup anyway.

Anyone know of a way to get around this?
At the very least, why the hell does it need to run 4 separate exes, and are there any that I can disable?

I bet it is something loaded at startup. Do msconfig and look at what is starting and unselect anything Alps.

Wondering if there is any benefit to upgrading to DDR3 1333?

What concerns me is some previous posts showing their RAM running at 400Mhz...could that be because the 3505 model (3GB) is not dual channel...or does Acer really down clock the RAM?

ULV Core i3/i5/i7 can only run at 800MHz, so 1333 is a waste of money.

It may. I've noticed that some sites will just say: Touchpad. Whereas some sites will say MultiTouch Gestures. I hope that's an indicator. I will find out soon enough. I ordered the 1830T-3927 from amazon and should be getting it in the next few days.

Yea... many of us knew the 1430Z was coming.
I think its a great trade-off to save big cash.

Its got the 4400 mAh 6-hour battery, not the 5800 mAh 8-hour battery.
The 320 GB hard drive, not the 500 GB.
3 GB memory, not 4 GB.
And seems like Bluetooth may have been left out.

Too late for me, but I would have gladly paid $495 for this new 1430Z,
instead of the $699 that my current 1830T i5 cost.
Its also got the slightly faster 470UM CPU, not the older 430UM, BTW.

    NOTE
Interesting.. connector locations in the 1430Z photo look different from my 1830T.
Also the 1430 photo at the USA Acer.com looks different.
Wonder if the 1430 is another total redesign?
    Can somebody please verify?

Ok, I just got my 1830T-3927 from amazon and it's an ALPS touchpad. I really have a feeling that because they've downsized the mouse to fit a larger battery, they had to go with a different company? Who knows. The touchpad is terrible not because it is alps, but the surface's brushed aluminum promotes horizontal motion and resists vertical movement on your finger. I owned the AS1410 when it contained the SU2300 celeron processor and that laptop didn't feel cheap at all compared to the 1830T. This new one feels fragile.

My guess is that the 1430z that's soon to be released is going to resemble the 1410 because they share the same battery capacity. I am hopeful then it will replicate the quality of the 1410. In the meantime, I'm going to keep this despite the shortcoming and replace it with the 1430z when it is released. If the 1430z touchpad isnt synaptics, then I am no longer going to purchase an Acer.

The upside is that they loaded it up with an intel i3-380um even though the box says i3-330.

Lastly the battery capcity I have is 62,640 mWh

Anyone know if the SAMSUNG 470 Series MZ-5PA064/US 2.5" 64GB SATA II is a good choice for a 1830T-3721? I am in a unique position to get it for fairly cheap.

If I do get an SSD like that one what should I expect with the installation process? I am completely wiping my OS and Data so I don't need to transfer anything.

Thanks for any input and any additional information I haven't thought of asking.

Every time I upgrade, after a while, I'm disappointed.
    Add memory, install SSD, etc.
Its because our brains adjust to existing conditions.

But yea... get and install the Samsung SSD and enjoy.

The Samsung 470 SSD is a very interesting piece of technology. It is one of the rare examples of proprietary hardware and software sold directly by the manufacturer. Differently than Indilinix and SndForce drives, in fact, firmware updating is guarrantied directly from the manufacturer.
I posted a video some pages behind showing how I swapped my original HD with a new SSD.
You'll find it also here: YouTube - Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830t-3721 upgrades.wmv
You'll enjoy your upgrade, A LOT!!! :spinny: :spinny:

How is it? Does two-finger scroll and two finger right-click work well? Is the motion smooth?

Terrible, actually. There is a lag in recognizing the two finger stroke. So the mouse pointer moves downwards a bit (as if you only had one finger on it), then it realizes that you're actually scrolling with two fingers and it kicks in. Sometimes when you put two fingers on the touchpad, it will jump to somewhere else on the screen. I tested this on a few other acers at walmart, including the larger acer laptops that have a larger touchpad surface. Same thing.

The bottom line is, to get the mouse to be anywhere near usable is to download the DELL's ALPS Driver/Software. It allows you to adjust the touch sensitivity whereas the Acer one doesn't. But in exchange, you don't get multitouch, which is useless anyways so it's not really a loss.

Another thing thats very annoying in ALPS and Elantech touchpads is that sometimes it loses sync, so when you move your touchpad around, it freezes and skips. You would have to lift your finger off the touchpad and wait 2 seconds for it to "self calibrate" before using it again.

There is a reason why people demand a synaptics touchpad. They are designed perfectly in every way and responds accurately to every stroke. There are cases where people complain of synaptics, but I'm willing to bet that it's because they didn't configure it properly.

Cool video. How hard is installing the SSD? Actually not that I think its hard or anything, more about is there any trick to taking out the mechanical drive and installing the SSD? A plate the flips up or anything weird?

I have worked on countless desktops and know them in and out, but this is the first time upgrading anything on a laptop outside of memory.

SSD installation is a piece of cake!
    Tips:
    1. After you remove the 5 screws from the cover on the bottom of the laptop, you can find hard to remove the panel. Don't worry, it is normal. Many people, and me too, reported that it is stiff. You can force a little bit more!
    2. The HD bay bears only one screw on the upper right corner. After its removal, slide the HD to the bottom. Extract the HD from the top, were there are the contacts. Even this process can need some strength. Be certain that the HD is fully at the bottom of its bay.
    3. At the end of the day I made a fresh OS install. Anyway, I didn't find any difference in performances between the cloned image installation and the fresh install. Acronis Home 2010 worked very well.
    4. Remember that any SSD will work at not MAX performance because of the intrinsic limitation of Intel Series 5 chipset based laptops. There are tweaks available that need registry changes and I tried many of them... Even if these tunings resolve this limit, I found that the gain isn't appreciable on everyday computing. So I ended up to put back everything to manufacturer settings. I'd rather don't stress the system, my boy must work for long time...
If you want, this last issue is described at http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/517916-how-improve-ssd-performance-intel-series-4-5-965-chipsets-stamatisx-tweak-11.html
Thanks to Stamatisx and Phil for their immense work on this! :notworthy:

I've seen others mention this problem, but have not found a solution. If I go into sleep mode on my 1830T-3505 and then wake, wireless will not reconnect. The wireless adapter is on, but it will not automatically reconnect to my preferred network (yes, "connect automatically" is checked). I do not broadcast the SSID from my wireless router, so my connection does not show up in the available networks list. I've found the only way to get the laptop to reconnect to my network is to go into the wirless adapter configuration and "disable" and then "enable" the adapter. Immediately it reconnects. But having to do that every time is a real annoyance.

I tried under the wireless adapter properties, power management tab, unchecking "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", but that setting appears to do nothing (at least for sleep mode). Turning wireless off and on via the [Fn]-[F3] keys also does not help. Only disabling and enabling the adapter in Windows does the trick.

    Any ideas?

    That's a nice Christmas gift!!!
I got the 3721 (i5) and swapped to the same Intel 6200 Newegg.com - Intel 622AN.HMWWB Mini PCI Express 6200 Centrino Advanced-N Wireless Adapter Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, WPA, WPA2
    Very good product!!
    ... and the A-DATA S599 64GB Newegg.com - A-DATA S599 AS599S-64GM-C 2.5" 64GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Really happy with that, and consider that it's the cheapest SF1222 out there. It bears some issues with suspend mode because of the firmware (3.1.0). A-DATA says that will make a firmware upgrade online at the beginning of 2011. If I could, today I would purchase the OCZ Vertex 2 instead Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
I also have the Intel X25 on my desktop and it's excellent!
For bluetooth, why not the nice and cheap DealExtreme: $8.60 MSI Tiny Bluetooth V2.1 + EDR Adapter Dongle (Vista Compatible)?
I purchased many of them in the past and they work perfectly!
Anyway, don't worry, you'll enjoy your new toy A LOT!!! :spinny: :spinny: :spinny:

Most SSD drives will give you a large increase in performance across all areas of disk operation, so you should go with what you can afford or you believe is suitable for you. In order to make the most informed decision for yourself based on what your needs are, I would suggest reading the following..

Firstly, before I decided to buy a SSD I searched around for some information concerning the way SSDs operate. If you want a real in-depth understanding, read the following:
    SSDs 1
    SSDs 2

Getting to the chase on two drives (the ones I was looking at):
    Intel x25m G2
    OCZ Vertex 2

Start of graphs if you don't want to read lots

Intels next generation x25m; will it beat the OCZ Vertex 2?
    Intel x25m G3

After reading all the above and then some (around other places to double check) I decided to buy the OCZ Vertex 2.
