tinkeringmc, last I heard, the word on the street is no, because they are dropping the timelinex series. I didn't see anything for this model/series listed on Acer's new offerings announced at CES 2011. But if anyone else knows differently, please post. Thanks!

Acer's 11.6" are popular, I bet this will get update but not under the Timeline name anymore.

I think there was talk that they were going to market select lines exclusively under Gateway in the future and I think the Timeline series was one of them.

I think I read something about this right around the time the 1830 was released. Lil'puting maybe??

    Nice video... thanks.
Can you give us some feedback on how you like of dislike your little i7 Acer machine?
Does it get hot at all?
Seems slow or fast? What were you using before?
You are the first to post here with an i7.
    _____
Thinking about the future of 11.6" notebooks...
For now, nothing is more interesting or hotter than Acer's i5s and i7s
(except if you decide to pay double money for an 11.6" Mac Air)

Our little notebooks are on the edge of a new, yet to be defined
product that will bridge the gap between them and the 10" tablets that
not many folks will want after hauling them around a few weeks.

OK so over Spring Break I will be sending Acer my 1830T to see if they can fix/remove and replace the heatsink+fan for quieter ones. This works because I will at home I can use my 3810T then bring it back to school and use it until my 1830T is returned. Hopefully it will return with a quieter fan (which is annoying me as I type this) and allow me to use it happily for another 2-3 years.

I remember reading this, that ultra thin models would become Gateway's.

That would be an interesting and rather questionable business decision...The Timeline series is "the" flagship consumer line of Acer, and sells like hot cakes. Putting a new name on it but retaining the Acer brand could be problematic from a marketing viewpoint as customers like the name Timeline and associate it with slim but powerful notebooks...branding it Gateway...well lets say, this would be like VW selling the Golf as Skoda or Seat exclusively...such decision would be idiotic to say the least.

The article says that the ultrathins will be produced under the Gateway brand, except for the 11.6" Timeline. Nevertheless, Acer is rumored to be ending the Timeline model. It's sandybridge successors will be Aspire models only I guess. I don't get that move by Acer. These Timelines are well loved and have a great reputation.

Well, I have read through the entire thread! It took me about two weeks to read everything. What a let down to get through 242 pages, 2400+ posts just to find out that Acer is bailing on the Ultra Portable!

I bought my 1430-4857 from New Egg in late November. This model has the i5-520UM 4GB RAM and 320GB 5400RPM drive, it also has the smaller 4400mwH battery. I paid $599US plus $12 for shipping, a pretty good deal for such a powerful little machine. It is missing the Bluetooth transceiver but otherwise is identical to the 1830. I am really surprised to NOT hear more about this model in this thread.

After I bought it from New Egg, they set it's listing to "Deactivated" or some such similar state and they no longer sell the unit. Perhaps related to the supply based on Acer's new plans.

I picked up a 5800mwH battery from an alleged "Authorized" Acer parts retailer, it was sold as an OEM replacement for the 1830 but I think it is knock off. Battery Bar shows it as 5800 but I only get about 5.5 hours out of it with pretty low power settings and light web browsing, email usage. The 4400mwH original lasts nearly as long.

I purchased an after market Broadcom Bluetooth module for the 1830 and was hoping to install it in this 1430. Does any one know where the module is located? I opened the bottom and saw the HD, RAM and wireless card, but no connector for a missing Bluetooth module. I can't find any detailed technical documents anywhere online so, I either have to live without Bluetooth or strip the machine down to its skeleton.

By the way, the box for my unit says it was manufactured in 05/2010 and it has the Synaptics touchpad, which I have found to be nearly useless, too small without even trying the gestures. I prefer a wireless mouse, hence the need for Bluetooth.

Am I the only 1430 owner out there? I feel so lonely ...

Yea... you the only 1430 owner I've seen on this thread.
So interesting because all the currently listed USA 1430s have the U5400 CPU
(which is roughly equivalent the older SU7300)

I've been following the Acer 11.6" line for the last 2 or 3 years.
I'm convinced Acer tries to offer the best product for the best street prices.
But there is no methodology used on the offering of models.
The upgrades and changes come too fast to implement marketing strategies.
New machines are just dumped on the market whenever to be grabbed up wherever.

I'm also convinced that Acer and Asus and Lenovo, Dell just push the 5 or 6
Taiwanese companies that make almost all of our notebooks
to give them the best "batch" of notebooks currently available.
Americans are so naive about this process of productivity.

Simplified... my 1830 i5 and your 1430 were just part of a batch run
thru by one of Acer's contracted company.
Don't worry too much or even think about it.

Living with a new computer lasts just a few years.
Getting married means thousands of dollars
of divorce expenses and child care. (not me)

Thanks for your thoughts yus9. I agree, it does seem as if the offerings of models, specs and availability, etc is completely random. Like have no real plan at all!

Does any one have any thoughts on my Bluetooth dilema? I did find a few service guides which show the location of the card under the palm rest area on the right.

Looks like a complete dis-assembly to get to it. I am also unsure if the required cable will be present. Something tells me it will not be there ... :-/

It sure is a kick-butt little machine!! I love it ...

Very fast. screen brightness and quality is good, keyboard is nice, touchpad is . multitouch features on kb (scrolling etc) are . having bluetooth is nice

runs relatively cool... the advertised battery life are only on power saver + low screen brightness, doesn't get unnaturally hot when on hgh performance mode with all radios on, just warm on the left side (assumed where the cpu is)

runs very fast, i was using the lenovo x61 b4 and that was a very zippy laptop

i put a 128gb ssd in it and cloned via acronis, and my cold boot times are ~20 seconds. The only things faster are the sony vaio Z and the new macbook air, its pretty sick.

if you get this i highly recommend you get an ssd. I might also be upgrading the wifi card, but i haven't tested the stock wifi's throughput on a high bandwidth connection, we'll see...

I've Aspire TimelineX 1830T-52U4G32nk : i5-520UM with 3G and I'd like to oc it using SetFSB.
On SetFSB, I tried to use clock generator Asus G72JH but it didn't work...

    Hey guys

I managed to smash the lcd of my new 1830T-3927. I bought a new one but when I removed the plastic tabs hoping to see screws i was surprised... no screws... looked for the service manual everywhere but no luck.
how on earth do you remove the front bezel to replace the lcd screen???

    Thanks

    Evan

For your Bluetooth problem look in the 1410 thread. I have seen methods described that do not include complete disasembly of the computer. Do a search in the thread.

Here I did it for you- http://forum.notebookreview.com/5446911-post320.html

I beleive there is also a method of somehow slipping it in without all the dissambly. Look around the info is here.

Hi: there has been some discussion about using the keyboard of the 1810T in the 1830T. Some say it's possible while others are in doubt.
Can anyone for sure say that they have succesfully used a 1810T keyboard in 1830T?

I bet it will work -- I swapped the keyboards in a 1410 and my 1830t

also swapped the screens between these two models -- it's very easy just pry the bezel off with a thin tool, no need to open the case and access the mobo

Yes, thanks. I asked a supplier of acer spareparts if it was possible to use the 1810t keyboard in a 1830t. They forwarded the question to Acer who confirmed that it was possible.
So am ordering a Danish keyboard now for my 1830t :)

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone might know why my HDD is making a grinding noise and if it was normal amongst the community? I haven't dropped my computer, it only happens when I tip my computer, such as positioning it on my knees, or picking it up. I don't remember when it started but it doesn't sound good. My computer hasn't experienced any performance issues so that's why I didn't promptly look for answers when it first occurred but if this isn't normal, how do I fix this? I know I'm not going to deal with the less than stellar Acer repair service I've heard so much poor news about. I guess this is what I get for not installing a SSD.

That sounds more like a fan impinging just a little. My 4820TG did it for a few weeks when I first got it but it seems like the part of the fan that was ever so slightly hitting the casing wore down enough for it to stop. Fan still works, so that's good.

Haha. You know I think it is the fan. It only REALLY happens when my computer gets hot. After I posted my concern I gave the laptop a breather then came back and tested it again (tilting it) and it was fine (no buzzing noises). The common thread is that it does that only when the computer is really warm. So in that case what can be done?

Had the same problem in my wife's 1830T.
    Got worse over time.
In the USA, get it repaired by going to FixMyAcer.com
Very easy, but it will take about two weeks including shipping both ways.

PS.. Acer will NOT return your original box. So if you want
to keep it, Send your machine in other packaging.
No need to send your battery or power supply, BTW.

    Pease help.

My L key suddenly has started acting like it has a big piece of rubber under it. It works but takes 3 or 4 times the pressure to get results than the other keys. This is a change that happened yesterday. I can’t remember dropping food or anything else on the keyboard but I do have a bad habit of eating while on the computer. I think there may be something under it but cannot see anything. Before I go and pry at the key I want to ask if the keys can be pried off and then replaced. If I have to replace the keyboard I will but would like to fix it in place. Having a key that does not respond but requires an extra effort to press is a drag. Any experience repairing a sticky key?

Yes, you can pry a key off and then replace it, I've done it on 1830t keyboard. Regular key will be held in place by 4 small plastic clips along the edges of scissor mechanism, one at each corner of the key. The best way to go about it is to pry one corner at a time. You can start with any corner you like, I usually start with top left one, then move onto bottom left one and then do two on the right side. Now, when you will be prying key it will look like it's about to break, and yes, there is a chance that it will, you will have to accept that chance, but it should just pop off. One more word of caution: when you pry the key, make sure you pry key and the key only, make sure you do not accidentally pull the scissor mechanism along, otherwise you will break it!

Thank you Thy, I started to pry carefully at the corner and found there was lots of flex ao I lifted the bottom edge and tilted the computer with the coma and period keys presed down and a chunk of food lell out. Problem solved. Must resist eating cokkies at the keyboard, next investment is a can of presurized air(and maybe a bib.)

Happens to me.. I'm always using my machine at the kitchen countertop.
As a low-tech fix for keyboard crumbs & cat hair,
    try "The Doctor's Brush Picks".
Its flexible thin brush end extends a half inch,
and can displace stuff from under the keys.

    Available everywhere, CVS, WallMart, Amazon.
    Works for for teeth too.

For a quick fix, you can reprogram the function of any key
or keys using a free application called KeyTweak.

For example, I've got my unused "Menu" key to the right of the space bar
reprogrammed as an additional more convenient "Backspace" key.
KeyTweak is very easy to use, and can always revert to the original configuration.

Yus9 Thank you for the tip. I installed Key Tweak and changed the Cap Lock key to match the Shift key. I was often changing to cap lock when all I wanted was a single cap word. Works great, thank you.

I`m thinking of purchasing the 68u118. I`ve looked at some pics of the inside where the hd, memory, and wifi are and notice there is an empty PCI-e slot. Has anyone here tried installing an aftermarket graphics card and routed the display? (or would this patently not work?)

Hey guys. I posted about a possible fan issue two weeks ago but lately it's been bothering me more and I don't think the prognosis was correct. I recorded the noise and posted it on youtube if anyone cares to listen to it.

    YouTube - Acer 1830 T Noise

I'm getting annoyed by this noise. Whenever I leave my laptop plugged in for a while it makes this sound when I tip it ever so slightly. If I leave it alone it is quiet and if I tip it on it's side and leave it that way the sound goes away until I tip it back to a flat position it will make the noise again. It'll make this SCRATCHING noise and then the fan kicks in to a high whoosh without scratching so I don't think it's the fan making that noise; then it adjusts or something until it's tipped again. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

Well gentlemen, this afternoon my Acer 1830 crashed. The partition recovery failed, my CD backups failed, I don't know what's wrong but I have to either send this into a Acer repair shop, risk it somewhere else, or I can cut my losses and ditch this company and purchase from a company that has better support when I need it in the future. They claim I'm covered but I'm hesitant to believe that when I send it in, I won't be receiving a call that I owe them money for something. I have opened this thing up to try and access the fan and snapped a couple of the clips that keep it locked on tight, I assume they'll just go ahead and say I owe them money everything right? Anyone have any valuable words of advice?

Try sending it to Acer, they can replace the heat sink and fan. But really it is a loud notebook, that's partially why I got rid of mine.

So, is this design a dead-end? Is Acer going with the Fusion E-350 for its 11.6" or will there be an low-powered second generation SB UM I5 CPU?

    Hi guys,

I am having this problem and looking for some advices:
Yesterday night I shut down my 1830T-3505 and, before the screen completely turn off, I closed the lid ( which means put the computer to sleep). when i got home and turned it on again, the laptop showed the POST screen and the window boot option, but it cannot boot into window 7 and immediately go back to the POST screen. And this loop continue, the only way that I can get into window 7 is press Enter repeatedly, but when I got to the log on screen, my keyboard seems malfunctions as well and I cannot put in my password ='=

Also, the laptop was really hot when I got it out from my backpack.

Anyone have experienced this trouble ? I really need advice, my assumptions are:
    1- window 7 update issue ?
2- because of the shutdown - closing lid , it damage the bios ?

If it's a dead-end, it's a pity cos I'll have to start looking at Sony or Lenovo.

    Kinte,

Try powering down the system and removing the battery. Also be sure the A/C is unplugged. Let it sit for a minute or so.

Now plug the A/C in (leave the battery out). And start up. If you're able to startup and login without incident...then power back off, unplug the A/C and plug back in the battery. Plug the A/C back in and restart. Let the battery charge fully back up before trying to use it on battery.

If you still encounter problems, send it in for warranty repair/replacement (before your warranty runs out.)

    Hope this helps

Could be hardware, or could be a corrupt operating system.

Try starting up in Windows 7 Recovery Mode by tapping F8 as your Acer starts up.
    Then pick "Safe Mode"
Then find "System Restore" while in safe mode.
Then restore to an earlier restore point.

    More info at this link.

    Let us know...

No news on an Acer 11.6" SandyBridge machine.
Nothing mentioned or leaked anywhere that I can find.
Usually new machines pop up in China, Taiwan or Japan, but nothing.

But next week, April 15th, Acer has a new 10.1" detachable Windows Touch tablet for sale in the US.
Its the Acer W500 10.1" Multi-Touch Screen Tablet at $549.
Quite interesting with a pretty fast AMD processor.
Its even got an HDMI out port.

    See more at this video.

It looks like the ULV sandybridge CPU's will not be available for a month or so yet. The ULV CPU's will have HD 3000 graphics so an 11.6" replacement for the 1830T will have significantly improved graphics. Hopefully, Acer's tablets won't interfere with its 11.6" refresh. BTW, the W500 needs a digital pen. :(

Just doing a quick check on bluetooth and Intel 6200 wireless on 1830T
before I go ahead to install it to replace the Broadcom....

I read from other note warning on losing internal bluetooth
after replacing with Intel 6200 on Dell Laptops.

This same problem should NOT happen on 1830T I suppose?
By the way, where's the Bluetooth hardware implemented
inside 1830T? Can't seem to find it in device manager on
a quick glance? (Ok it's showing in device manager after
    I turn on bluetooth...)

Also is it easy to remove the 2 antennae with nose pliers
from Broadcom and then reconnect to the 6200?
I'm just doing at home with no full-scale-lab-bench,
so am very cautious of not damaging the delicate antennae
    by ANY chance.....

    Thanks =)

Cons: Replacing the internal card with this one in the Dell Inspiron Duo means the loss of internal Bluetooth capability.

It's not a "Con" for me, but easily could be for someone else, so please be advised of this when considering this card as an upgrade!

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to replace the anemic Atheros AR5B195 card that shipped with my Dell Inspiron Duo.
I only use Bluetooth when docked in the Audio Station dock, so I have a USB BT dongle plugged in there that has worked fine for my BT mouse.

    Performance is outstanding by comparison.

    Thanks.

How relaxing feel with the BeeGees music... :)

6200 has no bluetooth itself (vs original Broadcom),
so will lose Bluetooth function after swap?
