Just placed my order for my 2nd TimelineX 4820TG (from newegg). My friend should be happy with this gift :D.

Oh and I got newegg via chat to give me free shipping as well. Saved another $15 right there.

$830 for this beast = WIN .

Just bough the laptop from microcenter yesterday and my uncle is shipping it to me in canada. I just want to ask, what programs should i remove when i get the laptop. I would do a clean install but no time for that as i expect the laptop to come on wednesday and first year uni starts on thursday.

Also how do you guys find the battery life? Just for basic tasks such as web browsing and word processing.

Laptop was a bit expensive as it was around 970 because newegg wont even let me ship to the usa with a canadian visa so i had no choice. But for the price it seems better than most.

Ugh I really wish I didn't have CA tax on newegg.

On another note where did this bounty of 4820TGs come from? Kudos to the poster that found out about these. Is it a good sign that more units are coming to the States?

Looks like Newegg.com put up the wrong price for the 4820TG. You guys should order it before they correct the price.

    Core i5 4820TG and Core i5 4820T are both $829 on Newegg.com

When I saw the same price for the 4820T and 4820TG I thought the TG listing was a mistake, as in they don't have that model in stock at all and it's just a false alarm so to speak.

All versions of the 4820T & 4820TG are in stock at Newegg.com. When it has "Auto-Notify" then it is out of stock, but currently it has "Add to Cart". Also, it will list "In Stock" or "Out of Stock" when you click on a laptop's page.

Just got my 4820TG w/ core i3 (core i5 540m on the way)

    first impressions...
    - decent build quality, obviously doesn't compare to my old Elitebook 6930P, but amongst consumer laptops... I'd rate it above average. However, the lid being so thin is a bit bothersome, but not concerning. The bottom can easily flex to hit the battery. And since it's so thin and light, and maybe the hinges aren't strong enough, but when the lid is closed, it can sort of flap a mm or 2 while carrying it around.
    - the contrast on the 4820TG seems to be a bit less than my 5820T. However, the 4820TG doesn't have noticeable pixelation like the 5820T. Maybe because the screen is stretched out so much on the 15.6"? The 4820TG has an AUO screen and the 5820T has a Samsung.
    - this HDD is god awful slow. The 4820TG came with a Hitachi 320gb 5400rpm while the 5820T came with a WD Caviar Blue 320gb 5400rpm. Can't wait to put my Corsair F120 in.
    - battery life is exceptional. I've realized, there's almost no point of compromising CPU power by getting a CULV. My HP TM2 got about 4.5 hrs and under similar conditions the Acer gets 6.5 hrs. Adding the Corsair F120 in the TM2 stretched the battery life to 6+ hours, so I'm eager to see how it does in the Acer, I expect it to be able to reach the advertised 8 hrs with ease.
    - oh yeah and of course, can't forget gaming. Installed BC2, but had weird issues with the mouse. No matter where I direct the mouse, the character would just stare at the sky and spin around. Strange... never had this issue on the TM2 or my desktop.
Played a bit of Dirt 2 and it ran a consistent 30 fps @ medium settings. CPU temp hovered at 85 degrees. Only issue was when driving over water, it would drop about 5 fps, but it dropped over 10 fps at one point... maybe due to CPU throttling?

Bronsky, can you post a step-by-step on your CPU install when you get it?
and btw, I'm ditching the Seagate Momentus XT for my secondary HDD, I'm gonna just reuse a Hitachi 7k500 or WD Black 500gb since I already have them and not being used.

same here... otherwise I would've sent my core i3 unit back to TD. But thanks to 9.75% sales tax bumping it over $900, I figured for a bit more... I bought a core i5 540m and if I sell the core i3 350m, it'd come out to roughly the same price. And I'm already replacing the HDD with a SSD, so the extra capacity doesn't matter much.

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but the 4820T has the 9-cell battery.

By the way, yes I think people know what "In Stock" and "Out of Stock" mean. However, sometimes there are glitches or errors in a system such that an item which is not actually in stock is listed as "In Stock".

No need for the sarcastic, childish print screen and arrows. All of your posts in this thread are so defensive - why? It's a message board. People can discuss things freely. You need to chill out, brosef.

What made you switch to the dark side (Mac --> Windows machine)?

I'm hoping that this is a good sign more 4820TG-3195 units are coming to the States. If amazon gets it hopefully it'll be something like $850 and I can order without tax.

Currently, Tigerdirect has it for $293 minus $50 rebate. That's pretty much $2.00/gb. It beats Intels price, performs better in most benches, and has amongst the lowest power consumption ratings.

However, you should be aware that most people are having issues with this drive, actually anything with the SF-1200 controller (OCZ Vertex 2 and Agility 2)

    Quick Questions.

The AS4820T-3697 (which does not come with the 5650) But comes with a 9 cell battery, Does that 9 cell battery work with/compatible with the AS4820TG-3195 which comes with the 6 cell battery? Please advise...

    Hi everyone!

Had my 4820TG for a few day now and loving it, except I've come across a bit of an issue with the mouse pad and was wondering if you guys new what to do.

For the first few days the mouse pad was working fine, but recently it has disabled the right click function and I don't know how to turn it on! I've looked in 'Pointing Device Properties' and can't find anything that will enable it. Another issue with the mouse pad is that when I turn on/resume my computer from sleep the mouse disables the left click and right clicks everything instead! I can fix this by opening the task manager and closing out of it but then the right click is disabled again. Does anybody else have/had this problem and know how to fix it?
Mouse works normally when I use my USB mouse

    Thanks!

aside from the lid. and the battery, whats the diff? both have the same screen, same bezel, same lower assembly, same keyboard, same thickness (i suppose)

    so whats the diff?

edit: okay sa the 4745 is a weee bit thicker. is that it?

okay so I got the AS4820TG-3195, love it by the way.. Screen can get really bright... Did a test run on battery (6 cell) got 3.5 hours of actual use. Not Bad. Had Screen brightness about 50-60%, Wi-Fi enabled and I was constantly browsing the Web and doing word processing.. None Stop (was actually working). I am sure if I dimmed my screen to the lowest setting and turned of Wi-Fi I could get another hour maybe. I shut the Laptop down at 6% with an estimated 12-20 mins left.

Not Bad. Good enough for me. BUT!! If I can get my hands on a 9 cell battery I would like one. But I cannot find one Anywhere online, also looked at International amazon and ebay sites nothing, only 6 cell batteries. But Acer Makes the 9 cell for certain models so there must be some place you can order it from. PLEASE help me out, anyone know of a reliable place to order a 9 cell battery for the AS4820TG-3195

Also curious where can you buy the original 6 cell battery 6400MaH? can only find the knock offs on eBay. which are 4400Mah

Yea, they look great. Any trouble? Did you use the USB for power and what switches did you use. Feel free to add a write-up to the backlit KB thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/491169-acer-timelinex-3820tg-backlit-keyboard-mod-16.html. I would guess you have the first 4820TG with a backlit KB. Congratulations.

    Back again Guys.
I've just gone through the detailed procedure to install the ATI vga and radeon drivers. I'm using the 10.8 version from the website but Device Manager is reporting that the driver version installed is V.8.753.5.0 dated 30th July. Can anyone confirm this or tell me I'm still getting it wrong???

P.S. When I unplug the laptop, the power-saver mode switches to the Intel integrated card. But when I plug it back in, while the power-saver switches back as normal, the graphics card switch-over does not happen. I either need to press the button beside "eject", or right-click to "configure switchable graphics".
Any one shed any light on this?
Fresh install of Win 7 ultimate, by the way!!!

Those are awesome prices! Tax still blows. Thank goodness $829.99 via newegg is still cheaper than $799.99 + tax via MC. I'd be so pissed lol.

Also LOL @ only 2 new in box in stock in the ENTIRE Micro Center inventory. Good luck getting those.
Yeah I tapped into the USB. I used a switch I got off ebay. Fit it into the kensington lock slot. I'll get some pics up later this week when I can.

Alright, after the last few hours, Device Manager is now reporting V. 8.762.000 dated the 3rd August for "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5600/5700 Series".
I did NOT use the 10.8 download from AMD however. I grabbed the driver update from here
On the other hand, Intel GMA HD driver version is coming in as V. 8.692.1.0
    dated 22nd January.
Answer me this: Am I getting close?

I'm probably going to purchase one of these soon (just need to save up a little more money first), and I noticed that Microcenter has both the i3 and i5 models for a $100 difference in price.

For those of you who have one, is the i3 sufficient or am I better off going with the i5? Can they both be upgraded to an i7 later if I feel like it? What about the throttling issues I've been reading that some people are experiencing?

I was thinking about getting this, and then I saw that it's 1.9" thick. That's huge! Is it really that thick?

I don't know where you got 1.9" thick from. The thinnest part on the laptop is 0.94” and the thickest part is 1.13" due to the rubber stubs on the bottom of the laptop. It's a very thin laptop.

Yeah I tried with my 3820tg and I get the same mess-up screen. Changed it to ATI GPU and it's fine. Weird.

Not all that weird. Intel IGPU performance is over-hyped.

The driver version for 5650 is correct but for Intel it should be "8.713.3.3000" if you install the latest version from Acer.

I always switch to "Discrete" in BIOS before I uninstall the drivers and then back to "Switchable" to install the Acer drivers, and then back to "Discrete" to install ATI drivers and then, guess what... back to "Switchable". Seems to work better that way. Any particular reason for not downloading the drivers from AMD?

BIOS v1.18 is available for both 4820TG and 5820TG for those of you who want to update.
