They're all available on Acer's website

Go to acer.com>select your country>Service & Support(top)>Driver Download(left)>Notebook>Aspire>4820TG>select your operating system, then look under Application

    For the thermal paste,
you can also compare Arctic Cooling MX-2/MX-3
    and Arctic Silver 5.

I've been using those on desktop gaming rigs
I've setup for other people or used for myself.

Regarding a laptop, would applying the thermal paste
    void the Acer warranty?

Has anyone here applied thermal paste and still received warranty coverage?

Just got back home, and read your posts.

Glad to know your problems with Device Manager have been resolved. :)

Good to know also that there's a slight variation in hardware specs even with
    the newer 4820TG-7805.

Hmmm, I wonder why there's a change in the hardware specs?
I wonder is there a difference in reliability/performance then.

Is this a common practice with laptop manufacturers based
on parts availability, certain amount manufactured at a certain period, etc?

Mine has the Mfg Date: 2010/08/05

Here's a screenshot of my Device Manager...

Yes, I have heard of the Arctic Silver before, but was not for sure which was the best. I will do a little research now that I have some brand names to search for.

Thank you Cykotoxik and Lee_what2004 for the advice.

As far as I know, yes the warranty is voided if you open the laptop case. Reading previous post where others have replaced the paste with a better type, several people noted that you have to break warranty stickers to get in that far. I think that I could get them to honor the warranty anyhow even if I did open the case. I plan on making a video of me opening the laptop and replacing the paste. This way I will have proof of what I did and did not touch during the process. If something else goes bad that is not affected by replacing the paste, then there is no reason for Acer to not honor the warranty. My video will serve as proof should I ever need it.

Does anyone know what the ADT cable is for? You can see it when you remove the bottom cover plate of the laptop. It has 2 red and 2 black wires. Located right to the left of the GPU. Is it for the battery or something?

I had the picture showing, but it disappeared. Go to: http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=232&t=1504719&last=18724662
It is the picture at #13. That is what they are calling the ADT cable. Does anyone know what it is, or what voltage runs through it?

You're welcome. Glad to be of some help.

All the best on whichever thermal paste you decide upon and its
application in your laptop. I'll be looking forward to your update on your
experience with the thermal paste and if the warranty will still be valid.

If the warranty will still be valid, I'll definitely be applying some thermal paste
    also.

Thank you also for your help and info.

Great idea about the video! :)

Did lee_what2004's WiFi advice work for you?

Or are you still experiencing Internet connection issues?

Just curious, which WiFi Network Adapter do you have in your
    4820TG?

I have a Broadcom WiFi Network Adapter in mine.

Ever since I've received my 4820TG, I had it regularly
    connected to a WiFi connection.

Several hours of the usual web browsing, video streaming, etc.
Several hours also of online gaming, MMORPGs and such.

I haven't experienced any problems with my wireless connection.

As for the "Windows has determined the driver software for your device
    is up to date" message.

Is it you tried to update the driver through Device Manager ->
Properties section -> Driver -> Update Driver -> Search automatically...?

That's usually the message for some drivers.
So a manual update/installation is required, if there are updated drivers for
    that device.

Seeing as the cables go with the direction towards the screen and picture #25 has the similar cable, I would say it maybe the cable for the speakers.

Whenever I overclock it, above stock clocks, artifacts will appear all over the screen.

I currently live on campus in a dorm and the only internet they offer is via wifi. My room is at the furthest point from the router so I barely get a signal. Is there any wireless card I could replace mine with that would make any noticeable difference in picking up this signal? i currently have the atheros

Actually, owners are reporting limitations to the 6200 and are having better results with the Atheros Wifi card. The 6300 requires a third antenna to take advantage of the card's power. There is a discussion of problems with the Intel, started by Hendrickson in the 3820TG thread. You can search it.

They actually had a small stock come available the week before, it was kind of weird. It wasn't supposed to happen but they did. Went quick though. I was waiting til the 22nd as well and I got an email, but luckily I found it at J&R first.

If you see J&R has it in stock call them ASAP and they will likely price match newegg.

Anyway which Audio Chip is 4820TG using?
I know it is ALC269 but is it ALC269Q or just ALC269?
If it is ALC269q you might want to try this MSI Driver
    ALC269Q
Or the ASUS Driver from their gaming series
    ALC269
Or the MSI Driver without the Q
    ALC269
    Anyway Q stands for Quadraphonic.

I bet my rep those drivers have customization not found in Acer Driver.

Same goes for all the TimelineX X820s.

Personally I think it is a joke that it uses the same Realtek Audio Chip yet no one tried the Well-Customized Audio Driver from MSI...

Just got my 4820TG from newegg last week and so far I am enjoying the laptop, except the screen and its ridiculously narrow viewing angle!

Oh well, I can't really complain since the thing comes in under $800 bucks.

Quick question, is there a way for me to stop the auto switching for the video card? I find that sometimes windows will seize up when trying to resume a standby session. I would like to keep the intel video card on all the time unless i tell it to switch when i am playing a game or something.

    Thanks for the help!

In the BIOS, you can disable "Graphics Switching" and enable "Discrete". Other then that, I don't think there is an option to only use the Intel GMA HD besides manually switching it in Windows each time. Someone, correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you experiencing wireless problems from the pre-installed Windows 7?
    Or from a clean install?

I didn't have any wireless problems from the pre-installed
Windows 7 Home Premium. I just decided to do a clean install
    to avoid bloatware, etc.

I downloaded/installed the Wireless LAN Driver
    available from Acer's web site.

    acer.com>select your country>Service & Support(top)>Driver Download(left)>
    Notebook>Aspire>Aspire 4820TG>Driver

Definitely verify first which Wireless LAN Adapter is in your 4820TG.

The one I have in my 4820TG is a Broadcom Network Adapter.

From recent posts, rockstar83 and aznguy123 has an Atheros Network Adapter
    in their 4820TG.

So there's a variation with the WiFi in the 4820TG.

Which Wireless LAN Adapter is in your 4820TG?

I'm quite curious if this wireless problem is related to a certain
hardware brand, driver, settings, or just random 4820TGs with problems.
    Just like the LCD defects.

    Hehe!

Yes, I'm getting quite curious if this is a hardware or driver or settings
    specific issue.

If this is a widespread occurrence
or just a random problem (just like the defective LCD screens).

From my own personal experience with one 4820TG,
out of box and with a clean install, I haven't experienced any wireless
    problems.

Just today, I did a torrent download to further test my 4820TG wireless
connection. The torrent download lasted 6 hours plus with no wireless connection problems experienced.

Mine is a brand new laptop that is about 2 weeks old. I have done no modifications to the software or hardware...yet. *evil laugh*

The only thing I did to mine was install the ATI 10.7 Catalyst drivers from the first page. I did install them according to the instructions and everything is working fine. I am still leaning towards the software bug theory. If it is not the power management that keeps turning it off, then it might have something to do with the encryption of the wifi to router connection.
I played BadCompany2 online this weekend at my GP's house over a wifi connection. It was a 2wire router that was using the stock WEP encryption that it comes with. I did not experience any drop outs while connected to the 2wire router. At my home, I have a CradlePoint router tethered to a Verizon USB 3g Air Card. None of my other laptops/PCs have experienced this issue except a 5yr old Compaq laptop that does on a rare occasion.
The reason behind the encryption theory is that I have tethered to my DroidX over wifi to Verizon 3g. The phone does not use encryption to broadcast the wifi signal unless chosen in the settings. While connected to my phone, I have yet to experience a drop out.

I do not know if any of this makes any tech sense at all. I am just fish'in for answers here.

On the wireless card, I believe that mine is the Broadcom card. It shows Broadcom in the DeviceManager. I took off the bottom plate to get the numbers directly off of the card.
Ok the info on the card is as follows:
-Top sticker (has the FCC clearance data)
    Broadcom BCM943225HM
-Bottom Sticker (bar code and MAC address)
    T77H103.00 LF E600004072-03L3
MADE IN CHINA (sorry just had to throw that in there lol)

I think that the BCM943225HM is the identity of the card. I hope this info is of help to someone.

Other news: This laptop handled BadCompany2 great until it got hot. The thing is, I didn't think it was that hot to the touch. I mean it was warm and all, but my old Compaq got hot enough to cause discomfort if you had your hand on the palm rest for more than a minute. What program are you guys using to get temp readings? All the ones I tried say the Temp recording is not running or something to that effect.

Other-Other News: My replacement plate (for the bottom of laptop) came in today. Remember that fan I wanted to mount beside the RAM slots? TIME TO BREAK OUT THE DREMEL AND SAWZALL!!!

Hey Guys, I got one from the latest newegg batch (7805) and so far this laptop rocks. The only gripe i have with it is that I don't know how to enable hdmi out via the intel hd card, it only works with the ATI card, which btw overcloked to 750 / 1100 easily.

You can "only" enable HDMI out through the ATI video card on the 4820TG. It was mentioned somewhere in this thread.

i think this is driver related. Maybe the intel card is crippled in the ati drivers. I own a 3820t and the intel card is more than capable for this task.

The 4820TG has a 5650, which is slightly faster than the 335M. I'm not sure about the 4650.

However, the 335M is much faster than the 330M due to the 72 pipelines compared to the 48 pipelines.

    5650 > 335M > 4650 > 330M

I love the 4820TG, but two things that have bothered me since buying the 4820TG is:

    1) Flash crashes whenever I go full-screen in any browser. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash. Didn't work. Any ideas?

    2) The trackpad is disabled whenever I am typing. I keep trying to move the mouse right after typing and it doesn't work right away. It is really frustrating. Is there anyway to turn off this feature?

I really love the brightness of the screen on the 4820TG. Quite a bit brighter than my former Envy 15's 1080p screen.

    1) Flash works for me in full screen using Google Chrome. It could be a driver/software issue for you.

    2) In the Synaptics software, lower the sensitivity for "PalmCheck".

    Thanks!

I did update to a very recent ATI video driver. I think 10.10 (so that might be why).

I'm downloading scrybe synaptics drivers. It worked wonders on improving my two-finger scrolling of the 4810T I owned a while back.

Update: the scrybe synaptics drivers are virtually identical to the drivers that are preinstalled.

Yes pre-installed one, not a clean one, but unfortunately it is not home premium, it is Home Basic. The one I have in my 4820TG is also a Broadcom Network Adapter.
In the same room, my wife with a Atheros card has no problem, with the same OS. That makes me think that the problem is in the card not the OS. She is using also a pre-installed one.

Restoring to factory default in ccc fixed the problem completely.

    Hi all,

Having some issues trying to mismantle the laptop. Can anyone tell me how to remove the top from the bottom once all the necessary screws are out? I see two buckles that appear to be holding them together just behind the battery but I'm not sure how to loosen them or if I need to pull the thing together at some kind of angle.

    Some help please :)
