I agree. Even some TG owners were complaining about vertical lines displaying on their screens, which means it was from a defective batch.
The screens on the TG laptops have been very inconsistent with Acer and the best thing you can do is return the laptop for a replacement to see if you receive a better screen.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, so excuse me if I should have posted this somewhere else. I'm looking at getting a laptop soon, and after a couple of days of searching, I had determined that the AS4820TG was probably the laptop I wanted to get - great reviews, good battery life, ability to play games, etc.
Of course, as soon as I decide this, Newegg and Amazon both go out of stock on the machine. A page or two back someone mentioned a refresh of the same model with a 500GB HDD. Does anyone know if that's likely, or did I just miss getting one of these great machines? -
You have simple wait for a restocking.
No one knows, which version will be the next. -
Has anyone had any trouble with getting audio to work with the HDMI out? When I plug my connect my laptop to the tv, the video works great, but I see no option for HDMI out in my sound devices. Should I install the newest version of the ati drivers?
-
ATI uses Realtek audio for their HD5xxx series for HDMI so you may want to give Realtek a chance. There's a driver for ATI HDMI Audio Device on their support website- try this one.
-
I had this happen to me a few times with my 4820TG...
What you need to do is go to device manager...
Under sound controllers you will see that the one (or more) of the HDMI ones is actually disabled. You need to enable it. -
J&R: Electronics, Digital Cameras, Computers, Appliances, Software, Video Games, DVDs, CDs . had them in stock just a day or two ago. The price also just went up by about $20.
-
The screen also seems washed out....its very grainy. Does anyone know where they might have a unit in a store for me to compare?
-
As long as your CPU temperature is lower than the Core i5's thermal limit of 105C, you'll be fine gaming at 96C. However, it's pretty close to the max TDP, but I wouldn't stress over it unless you start to see throttling in games. Then I would buy a notebook cooler. The GPU should be able to handle higher temps than the CPU.

Does anyone know exactly what is included on the "factory default disc" set? I'm burning them right now and don't know what is on them.
-
You should have burned 1 driver and apps disk and a 2 or 3 volume backup of the entire system.

Sorry for asking this but how do i know which disk contains what? The erecovery just name those disks recovery1, recovery2 etc. -
The driver disk is made with the driver back up box. you can see the contents. The others are not identified and you just have to feed them in when requested.

88C for Prime95 is fine. My desktop gets to the mid 80s running Prime95 and it's in a well ventilated case with a top notch cooler. So 88C for a laptop running P95 is pretty good.
I had problems with vertical lines w/ my screen but it wasn't grainy. -
hmmm have a new issue, audio breaking up/crackling, both through speakers and analog headphones
anyone heard of this? -
Seems to be a driver problem. I had have the same problem and changed back to the driver from the Acer page.
-
Anyone notice that if u sleep via the start menue the laptop screen turns off but its still kinda on? Well it feels like its stuck trying to go to sleep, the HDD indicator is blinking and i can hear the HDD every now adn then,I cant recover from this, it stays black and i have to hard reset -_-. Lost all the lecture notes today, aghhh .
anyone else have this issue? -
i removed the audio device and let windows reinstall......it put the same driver back on and seems to be fixed now, random...

Add me to the list of new and happy 4820tg owners. Thanks a lot for this helpful thread guys! Recently ordered a new Sony Z which also rocks (been using an older Z for past couple years), found 5+ stuck pixels and am sending it back tomorrow. While waiting for the Z to ship I stumbled into this forum from the Sony one, saw my local Fry's had a 4820tg w/ the i5 460 and hd5650 in stock, so I jumped on it. Very pleasantly surprised with the 4820tg and it is a keeper.
Maybe I am one of the lucky ones, the display is quite nice (I have a CMO1457 display), very bright and crisp, black blacks, great horizontal viewing angles, 'meh' vertical angles, and no dead or stuck pixels. Funny how the $825 system is flawless and the $2300 system has many stuck pixels. Keyboard is also good on my system and the overall build quality is outstanding in my opinion.
For those who are having issues with fresh Windows 7 installs my process worked perfectly. I just downloaded an iso of Win7 HP and didn't waste my time making the 4 Acer factory restore DVDs. All I did was make the 2GB application and driver restore DVD. Swapped in a new SSD in place of the HDD. Did a fresh install of Win7 HP and simply installed all the drivers from the 1 restore DVD I made, no errors at all in device manager and this thing runs like a champ. I also entered my Win7 HP key from the bottom of the system in activation and it activated fine.
I've only played some NBA 2k11 so far, after about 30 mins the GPU max was 75C, fine by me. Sorry some of you have had issues with your 4820's, for any other interested buyers do yourself a favor and check this thing out if you can find one you can always return it if you get a dud.
@Cruisx- I am not experiencing the sleep issue you are having, can't opine on that one. -
How do you find which manufacture you have for your screen?
-
Ok I guess I shouldn't worry to much about my temperatures then.
Can anyone link me to the factory acer timelinex desktop wallpaper? I kinda like it and don't know where to find it since I clean installed windows 7.
Thanks! -
Just got mine today, and am typing from it as we speak. The screen looks really good on mine, no pixelated lines at all. Thanks guys for all the helpful information posted here; new guys like me really appreciate it.

Does anyone have any tips on overclocking the CPU in this thing? I was trying to use the free version of SetFSB with no luck. Are there any other tools out there?
-
You have to buy the latest, shareware version of SetFSB and there is no guarantee that you will be able to overclock your CPU.
-
HI i just got my order from newegg the 4820tg -7805 and my screen looks very grainy and you can see the pixels. I have the AUO303C screen. Anyone experiencing the same problem ? how have you guys dealt with this? the screen colors look a little dull as well. Did you guys get a replacement from acer and did that fix that problem. I have a monitor from 2001 and the quality compare to that is no comparison.
-
Return it for a replacement from where you brought it. Tell them it has a defective screen and hope for a better screen.
-
I'm on the same boat, I have a 5820TG with a AUO40EC Panel. I've had it for a week, I've been trying to tell myself that it's ok, but the screen is complete garbage.
This laptop has other issues that I am willing to live with, but the screen is just too bad.
Question: If I return this and get another one from the same store, isn't it likely that I will get the same screen again ? Since it would be from the same lot. -
Hi, everyone! I have a quick question about overclocking the ATI GPU in the 4820tg. I've downloaded the AMD GPU Clock Tool and am confused regarding what I can (safely!) increase the Engine and Memory Clock settings to while also seeing a (hopefully) noticeable increase in graphics performance. Currently, without any tampering, the Engine setting is sitting at 99.99 and the Memory Clock is set to 149.97.
Any suggestions? Thanks! I'll post a more substantial commentary about my experience so far with the 4820tg. In short, it's awesome!
-
I had the same issue with a 4820TG purchased from Amazon. The second laptop had a screen from a different manufacturer. You can take your chances and return it and hopefully get a different screen.
Same advice I gave to gihad. My replacement 4820TG doesn't have issues with graininess but the colors are dull. I had to calibrate the monitor b/c my panel had a VERY noticeable blue cast.
From what I've seen so far, it looks like a lot of the crappy panels are coming from AUO. -

So far I have no problem with my screen and I order it from amazon. Maybe this is a random defect?
-
stock is 550/800, yours is at 100/150 because powerplay is on (open catalyst control center and disable it)
YMMV as to overclock, i recommend increasing in small increments (25-50MHz) until you start experience lockups or crashing
watch your temps while OCing (hwmonitor, gpu-z)...and test max temps with furmark and/or in connection with prime95
i was able to get 750/1100 stable -
Where did you get your laptop from?
-
still seems to be an issue, clearly an audio driver issue since it occurs both out of hphones or speakers
-
has anyone return their laptop to newegg and how is their experience? Do they charge you 15% for the defective screen (grainy screen)
-
I got mine from Fry's
-
Does anyone have a color profile or a link to it?
I cant find a single one.
Thanks -
There is one for the 3820TGs. I think it's posted on the first page of the owners thread. It works perfectly on mine. It should work for the 4820TG but I can't be sure.

So I've been having an issue with my TimelineX 4820TG. Sometimes when I'm in the middle of a game (starcraftII) the screen will go black and I will be taken to the desktop again (as if I minimized or alt-tab'ed the game). I notice after this happens the fan tends to kick in quite loudly. What could this be?
-
You pressed the "Windows Symbol" key by accident. It happened to me a few times.
-
Thanks, I got AUO303C, is that one good for me?
(Im curious how does this screen compare to other screens, because blacks are really greyish.)
Someone asked if we know of a good sleeve case.
I do: LaCie Coat Laptop 15
Its for the 15" mac book, but it fits the 4820 like a glove.
Here is a picture.Attached Files:

Hi, I know pthis question has been here for while
but I know 4820tg is the right laptop (as i have been researching lately)
but I cannot find anyplace that has this in stock..
Newegg had restocked this on Nov 1st but I knew that it was sold out before Nov 5th (i have been checking the trends)
and now only! place it seems to have is amazon but it says it will take 3-5 weeks, and i really doubt they have this in stock right now..
can anyone tell me whats going on? or any speculations?
and where did everyone get theirs from? any offline stores?
btw im in north california -
I would give the profile a try. The AUO is not famous for the dept of its blacks but the profile seemed to help. You can always turn it off if it doesn't work.

hello i ordered a 4820tg.it is a slightly older model equipped with core i5 430m and ati 5650 (1gb). Are the any significant differences in perfomance with newer processors (450m, 460m)?
For the laptop sleeve i bought SLE3400FN/10 Philips Notebook sleeve SLE3400FN 14.1" with HeatProtect - Philips Support -
and with the ati 5470?
-
The 430M is not very different from the others.

-
Thanks bronsky for the quick reply. I think that my model does not come with the integrated bluetooth. Is there a procedure to install an internal bluetooth antenna?
-
The HD 5470 is a Class 3 (lower middle class) video card and the HD 5650 is a Class 2 (middle class) video card.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 - Notebookcheck.net Tech
I highly recommend that you go for the HD 5650. -
Frys Electronics has the 4820TG in stock at several locations, but it will cost you $829.99. Check the first post of this thread for links on where to buy the 4820TG in the U.S.
