Here are the refurbished Envy 14's. They will be listed under "ENVY notebooks". They should all come standard with HD 5650.

    Refurbished business products

Good luck on whichever laptop you choose.

Even the displays in the Envy 13 are 720p 320nits Radiance displays.

Do you know which ones have dedicated gpu's? And don't the Envys downclock the 5650's and don't make use of the intergrated gpu in the i5's? Or did they fix that problem?

I'm pretty sure all Envy laptops come with a dedicated video card or am I missing something here?

I thought some of the 13's didn't, but I might be absolutely wrong.

All of the Envys come with a dedicated GPU. And, no Drizzt5, the Integrated GPU in the Envy works. The dedicated GPU is set at the lower clocks available on the HD5650 (mostly to control temps I believe). Still, they can be OC'd a bit. Not quite as high as the Acer (the acer is an exceptional OC'er).

    Bronsky

Drizzt5, don't be worried about having trouble making up your mind. That's the fun part of this stuff.

Bronsky's right. No need to worry. I agree, that's the fun part of this stuff. :)

Your question about the 14"? You mean the Y460?
Well, here's the review that mentions the Y460 gets "scorching hot".

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5733&review=lenovo+ideapad+y460

That's another nice option with the Envy 13/14 that aylafan and Bronsky mentioned.
Nice selection with the (1600x900) Radiance displays on the Envy 14 also.

I agree with Bronsky about the only drawback is the 90 day warranty.
You just have to pay more for the HP Care Pack Services for extended warranty.

Dont worry, take your time on which one to choose, have fun, good luck!

    EDIT:
If you want to stay with Acer, Bronsky has numerous
posts on how and where to order the 3820TG from a Canadian retailer.

For the 4820TG, Haberdasher posted its availability
at Fry's. Or you can wait the upcoming weeks / Holidays
if the other online retailers might get some more in stock
for a cheaper price / price match.

This may seem like an incredibly stupid question, but how do I deactivate the locked touchpad when I type? It's rather annoying having to use a mouse all the time to play video games on here.

Posting from my new 4820TG, exciting! I was thinking it might be a bit big compared to the 3820, but it feels good!

    Very mini review:

Build: Maybe I lucked out, but there is no keyboard flex with my unit. The fingerprints on the screen and lid are bonkers though.
Screen:I do agree with a few of the claims about the resolution, it would be much more suitable on the 3820, as it can be a bit grainy on the 4820.
Battery Life: I've been running in the standard unchanged, unplugged power saver mode all day, with the wifi turned on, since about 9:30am and I'm still going with 20% left coming on 5pm now.
Bloatware: I uninstalled a few things, Norton and Mcafee were a bit of a pain, all in all not too painful. Maybe my Fry's unit was light on the bloatware, but compared to the bloatware on my girlfriends dell, this was a breeze. I would have liked a free trial with the Microsoft Office suite, to keep me from spending more money right away though.
Performance: I haven't run any benchmarks yet, but I do think an hdd upgrade will go a long way with this unit.

Overall, it's a good bang for your buck. My first purchases are going to be upgrading the hdd with an ssd, some RAM action, and a BL keyboard if i'm feeling a bit tinkery (that's a very scientific term).

    Cheers

Do you still feel like the 4820TG was the right decision over the 3820TG?
(About the display being grainy, which type of panel do you have?)
    Battery life sounds fantastic.

    Those upgrades sound reasonable:
Yank out the ODD and throw in a SSD for speed and space.

    Why upgrade the RAM?

And BL keyboard upgrade sounds like fun. How much does that cost and how hard is it? That would make this laptop amazing, but I worry about it effecting battery life.

So I have my laptop cooler (coolmaster U2) with two movable fans, and I am trying to figure out what is the optimal setup to keep my computer cool? Right now I have one fan in the top left corner where most of the heat exhaust seems to be coming out, and one fan in the middle towards the bottom. Any recommendations?

Picked up this laptop, really like it. I got the AS4820TG-7805 and it came with the CMO1457 screen which looks good.

The only part that has been bothering me a little is the front edge of the notebook where your wrists rest. It seems a little too sharp to me, does that bother anyone else? My last notebook had really rounded edges and was very comfortable on my wrists.

    Thanks!

Out of curiosity, where did you purchase the laptop from?

Thats very odd about the wrists rest. I read a similar complaint about a 14" lenovo laptop on amazon but never for the acer.

I got mine down at my local Fry's. They had a couple in stock.

Some other notebooks are definitely worse with the edge, like the macbooks have a razor sharp edge, this one is just so so, but still uncomfortable in my opinion. Maybe I need to work on my typing posture. :)

Amazon tonight (Friday 11/19, 9:30PM Pacific) claims the 4820TG's are

"In stock but may require an extra 1-2 days to process."

Well now, let's hope that they are processing the orders for those (like me) who have them on order. Still no change in my order status though...

The Amazon page for the 4820TG now lists it as "In Stock". Get it while you can folks! :)

    Question about OS fresh install.

I know from the first page's post about the hoops you have to jump through to do a fresh install.

I have a copy of Win 7 Pro. I know the 4890 license is for Home Premium. But, since all versions of Windows are on the discs, is there some way I can use the Pro disc for the install and somehow just use the HP part of it?

If you're installing from a W7 Pro disk, you have to install the pro and use the license on that verision to authenticate it. There is a way to manually use the OEM cert and key, but if you already have the disk, that would be the easiest way to do the installation.

Otherwise, you'll have to DL the HP and do an OEM install.

The problem is that the copy of Windows I have is an OEM version, and I used it in my desktop build. I just want to install the software and use the authentication from my laptop, since the OS is part of the system I purchased. I guess the question is will the HP/OEM install method you refer to work for my situation (W7 Pro OEM disc) or do I have to use restore?

This not supplying an OS disc is BS. Either give me the disc or give me the option of using my own on a blank computer.

It's these kinds of shenanigans by the companies that drive people to piracy.

I own a copy of Win 7 Pro 64 OEM. I installed it on a desktop I built several months ago.

Now, it is my understanding that each copy of Windows has all the versions on it. It's just that the activation key that came with the disc is geared for the level (HP, Pro, Ultimate) you bought. If you want to upgrade, you can just buy the activation online. All the extra features are already on the disc.

Now, reading the first post of this thread:

The way I interpret that post is that you have to back up the activation key on the computer to a flash drive, do a clean install (presumably from a disc), then restore the activation via ABR.

Now, my disc is geared to a Pro installation, not HP. I am asking if I can do a clean install using my Pro disc, but somehow only to the level of HP, since that is what the Acer's activation key is geared for. I am not trying to do anything shady here. Just want to configure my laptop which I legally purchased to my preferences.

It won't let you use the HP key to authenticate a copy of pro. Have you seen my clean install guide? There is a link on the first page of the 3820TG thread.

No,of course not, but that is not what I was asking. I was asking if I could install HP from a Pro disc, since all the files for HP are there already.

I will check out the clean install guide. Thanks.

I can't figure out why you would do that. Just DL the HP ISO or if you have a pro license DL the Pro Iso. Look at the guide. You don't need the pro disk at all.

For those people who have replaced their stock HDD with the Momentus XT 500gb, what are you thoughts so far? Do you notice an increase in speed? Is the HDD more/less noisy than the stock HDD, and, if noisier, how much so? Other thoughts? I'm on the fence about replacing my current HDD with it or instead buy a standard 7200 rpm HDD. Any advice?

I have no experience with it.

But from looking at it, it appears it would be better suited for the 3820TG or another single drive notebook. For the 4820TG a SSD seems better (if you take out the ODD) and use the stock HDD as a storage drive.

But if you need the ODD then the XT 500gb seems like a good all around drive.

After around 5 cycles it will start to optimize itself for your most commonly used programs. It should speed up the boot also. For every other thing that you use every so often it will be as good as a regular 7200 rpm hdd.

I've read a little about it and it appears to be a good alternative when you need a single drive with plenty of space.

Does that look like a good case for $9?
One guy has a thinkpad that fits in there.
I guess I really just need something to protect it but that isn't too bulky

What cases do other 4820TG owners use?

Just recently connected an SDHC card to the card reader

If it's possible try a sleeve/case/bag at a retail location when you get your 4820TG, so you can be
certain what kind of fit you prefer (a snug fit, or a little loose) with the 4820TG.

That sleeve from Dealextreme looks nice.
If you decide to order that one,
please let us know how it fits with the 4820TG.
I'm definitely interested on purchasing it.

how is the noise on this laptop? Does it whine? Are the fans loud? Does it get hot?

    Hehe! That's true.

But at a retail store, you can actually touch the sleeves
and test it with your 4820TG, so you can determine
which kind of fit you prefer. Then just purchase it online
    if it's cheaper. :)

PandaBear has a Case Logic 14" sleeve.

Amazon.com: Case Logic PLS-14 14-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black): Electronics

KolosoK has the Wacta 14" sleeve.

Amazon.com: Wacta Black 14" 14.1" Neoprene Laptop Notebook Sleeve Case: Electronics

They both say those are a nice fit for the 4820TG.

After reading the Case Logic 14" reviews in Amazon, two owners state it's a little loose on their 14" Acer.

PandaBear, is the Case Logic 14" a snug fit or a little bit loose on your 4820TG?

That price at Dealtextreme is cheap. You got me interested in it.
If you buy it, I'll be looking forward to your review (if it's a good fit for the 4820TG).
