Well mine will be here in a few days, it'll probably have the i480 and 5650 radeon (bought at j&r)
-
Is this i5 480M upgrade only in the States?
-
I did some tests with my 4820tg and overclocked the gpu. Some interesting results, at least for me... Here is what I got so far.
I only used 3dmark06.
Stock was around 7600
650/950 was 7400 with two screens and 3dmark06 running on my 24" monitor
700/1000 was 7787 with two screens and 3dmark06 running on my 24" monitor
700/1000 was 8485 with one screen (laptop) (so basically no monitor hooked up)
700/1000 was 9004 with one screen (monitor) (laptop screen not being used)
? lol 500+ points and all I did was use a separate screen? hmmm
The low score for the dual screens makes sense... I was running gpu-z monitoring temps on the laptop screen. Never went above 75c's. I think that is good... -
What's the resolution in 24''? Using the same resolution setting in 3dmark06 when using 1 or 2 screen ?
-
No. Your right I should try the same resolution.
I have it set at 1600x1200 even though the native resolution is 1920x1200.
For some reason I can not get the resolution to change to 1920 x1200 while plugged into this laptop.
But when I do launch a game like CS:S or COD I can change the resolution to 1920x1200.
Also, launching HW monitor screws up any multi monitor display configuration for me... lol :/
I'll try the same resolution benchmark tomorrow. EDIT: I mean later today... I forgot it was 2am. -
Running the benchmark at different resolutions directly impact the score, if that's what you did.
-
Does anyone know what they changed in BIOS 1.22?
-
Nope, but I just upgraded and seems to be running fine
-
I have a 4820TG with i5-460m. I am using this laptop for about a week and so far it is great. I've added two 128GB SSD HDs. I am using an ODD Caddy for the second hard-drive. It is running very fast.
Just one thing I didn't like, my RAM memory is rated 5,9 on Windows 7 Rating. Is your rating the same as mine? I opened the memory cover and it has DDR3 PC3-10600 1333. As far as I know this laptop can hold only 1066 PC3-8500, am I right? So the memory is running downclocked? -
I believe we have the same model (7805) and I got the same rating with the stock RAM -- 2x2gb Samsung chips with 10600 printed on the side. I'm not sure they're actually 10600/1333 chips though, as they appeared rated as 8500/1066 in a couple software utilities. I have since put in these (Corsair PC-10600 2x4gb) and they do indeed downclock to 1066 while displaying as 1333. (If you're curious, the timings downcock to 7-7-7-20.)
It is my understanding that the Core i5 downclocks any RAM to 8500 unless you manually adjust the FSB (with some software tool, since the BIOS won't let you). But the motherboard will support PC-10600 if you put it in there. -
I noticed a few pages back in this thread that someone said a clicking hard drive is a problem. Well mine has clicked since it came out the box. It doesnt sound broke, but it is a click. Should I be worried??
EDIT: Just listened to the video posted and mine is more of a tick than a click. This is my first laptop as I've always stuck to desktops before, so apologies if this is an obvious question -
anyone tried the latest x64 vga drivers? (12/3)
seems like a bug where if you have an external display as your primary and then run any major hw monitor application (hwinfo, hw monitor, etc) it turns off the display and reverts to laptop screen -
I ordered Crucial 2x4GB PC3-8500, it is on the way, I will post the results when it arrive. Even with the 2x4GB Corsair the Windows 7 rating still 5.9?
-
Wait.
The resolution for the benchmark was the same. I ran 3dmark06 at the default settings.
The difference was the windows resolution was different for each monitor. -
Whoops, sorry about that. I ordered from Amazon on Monday, Dec. 13th. Amazon has had it out of stock for the past week and I noticed they had units back in stock on Monday... so I bit the bullet.
-
Sorry, forgot to mention. When I installed the Corsair chips the WEI score for memory jumped to 6.8.
-
I have a 4820tg with the i5 480 and just ran 3dmark06 and got 9072 with the video card o/c to 690/950. I guess i could go a little higher as it seems some are going above 700/1000. Video card max temp was 73 and CPU was 88. What do you all think?
-
Give it more juice!!
-
Lol, went up to 700/975 and got 9239. I think that is good enough for me. Considering my desktop hits 10K and does everything I need it to, this is just enough for me!
-
Impressive! Good idea not to push it too hard, these bad boys can get pretty hot which cant be doing the chips good. It's always a good idea to keep it ~10% less than what you think you could get out of it.
-
Can anyone share a tutorial with mr of how to change hdd? Mine isn't working and i have no clue how to change it
-
This was posted by Hendrickson on pg 1 of the 3820TG thread. I'm assuming its the same or relatively close so it should get you through. It's not a very difficult process. All credit goes to Hendrickson for a great guide.
-
Not really, hard drives have ticking sound to them. Certain brands are louder than others. If it's loud, repetitive ,consistent and has a distinct pattern to it then yes. It's always wise to back up your stuff because you never know.
-
I must be deaf since I can't hear any noise from this laptop except for the fan when it speeds up. I can't hear the hdd, maybe if I stuck my ear on the keyboard!
-
It really depends on the drive, sometimes you cant even hear them unless there are waking up or parking there heads.
-
As always offtopic to the current discussion (sorry), this update is actually worth reading for anyone with issues with their 4820tg. I got back a broken laptop from Acer's repair facility after three weeks, and will never be using them for repair again. I called up Amazon and they... overnight air shipped me a new laptop. No questions asked. I have two now, the original will be returned in the next day or two (UPS is going to pick it up from my house). Amazing.
This new laptop, which I am on, has the i5-480m and an LG display. I feel like stat-wise the LG might be a bit behind but I could just be crazy, because it looks fine to me. Great stuff. No issues with it so far after a few hours of use.
How amazing is Amazon? -
Glad to hear that you got this issue solved. Acer sent me a new laptop when my old one was defective. I guess it depends on the technician you get.
-
Too bad Amazon.ca here in Canada is more or less nothing. Overpriced everything that no one buys.
-
Thanks, I can sleep easy now, or easier at least. I have a 500GB portable HDD I keep anything important on so I'm covered.

Visited the Singapore Expo Today and here are the offers :-
Common Config for both Laptops:-

Win 7 HP 64 bit

Bluetooth 3.0 Acer Crystal Webcam
5820 TG :-
HD 5650 (1 Gb Dedicated)
15.6" screen
Dolby Home
500GB HDD
Freebies : Mouse, USB Speakers, Extra Battery, Second year Carrry In Warranty, Norman Suite (Antivirus)

Aspire 4741G:-

Freebies : Norman Suite, Mouse , Carry Case

Now the question which graphics card will perform better GT 420 M (2 Gb Dedicated) or the HD 5650 (1 Gb Dedicated).
Very important for me to decide as my decision is solely based on the Graphics . Rest I can ignore for the while .
TIA for helping !!! -
-
Yes but will the additional 1 GB ram in the GT 420m makeup for the 10-12% advantage which the HD 5650 has ?
-
No.
Bronsky
-
No, the extra 1GB of ram will not make up for the performance difference. The GT 420M probably won't even make full use of the 2GB.
-
5820TG then , the extra battery offer is really good ! Thx for all your help. -
Hey for those of you in Southern California, the Microcenter location got a few more in stock. They weren't unloaded off the truck yet so you're going to have to call them up and ask to hold it. Call em up 714-566-8500. Ask for Jay.
-
I am very happy for you! You even got a slight upgrade cpu wise! If the display looks good don't question it
I do love amazon... even more so since I got amazon prime for free because I am a student
off topic:
One of my friends saw me using my laptop and bought me a early Christmas gift!
It's a pillow/laptop desk thingy so I don't burn my lil soldiers up while I've got the laptop on my lap. It also comes with a LED thingy.
Btw about this laptops game performance. I was playing COD black ops hooked up to a 24" display at 1920x1200 and at 700/1000 it was a little choppy in spots... usually from 26-40 fps sometimes dipping lower. This must be because of the graphic cards memory at that high of a resolution. AA turned off.
Also I was playing CS:S at that resolution and it was not a constant 100 fps. I blame the memory again. AA turned off.
So basically the card has great performance but is not built for higher resolution game play even if it can handle it.
Edit: Anyone use the software HWMonitor and an external monitor? Whenever I load up HWMonitor while I have my 2nd display hooked up to the laptop it disconnects me from the 2nd display and goes to just the laptops screen. grrrrr -
you aren't alone.

Okay so i got a lil problem with mine, i did a clean install and got the new drivers from the website, everything works but now ma battery is only like 4hrs from the previous time of 6.....im tempted to format again and go back to ma old drivers.....lol......i still experience power cuts in Nigeria so ma battery is key to continue ma downloading! newyz is it only me or did anyone else experience this?
-
good to know I am not alone.
That sucks though... hopefully a driver update comes out and they fix it.
I don't use my brightness keys often but I do use the sound keys often...
I might make the switch to regular official AMD drivers and lose that functionality... if there is a fix for the hwmonitor thing.
Whatever, I am still enjoying this laptop
-
for me it's more than just hwmonitor...hwinfo32 does it too when you load the sensors page.
edit: i'm using the combination of realtemp and gpu-z right now and it seems not to cause this issue. -
Has anyone had luck removing/replacing the miniPCIe wireless card? It's actually screwed on to the motherboard and the screw is nearly impossible to get out. I'm afraid of stripping it if I push any harder.
-
Same ive been using gpu-z
-
Hey there guys iv been lurking around this forum page for a while getting great help and info based on the knowledgeable posters so I just want to first thank you guys for contributing so much!
I was also wondering if anyone has issues of games slowing down when leaving the computer on for a while. For example in sc2 i get steady 60fps but if i leave the computer on for a couple of hours untouched and play sc 2 the frame rate drops to 30.
Same goes for assassins creed 2. Im using the 3820tg drivers mentioned earlier and was wondering if anyone else had this problem?
Its definitely not a heating issue tho as I see through hwmonitor its completely fine.
Doesnt seem to be a file running as far as I can see in my task manager...is it because the ram is being taken up? is this normal or is there someone who leaves their computer on for couple of days and can still play high demanding games with regular framerates?
vid card is not overclocked btw just in case someone asks.
Thanks for reading guys! -
hi guys, anyone having an issue with the USB ports? when I press/bend the laptop on the right from the touch pad it makes the sound as if I'm diconnecting an USB device. I have a wireless mouse on one of the ports and it stops working, pluging in and out makes it work again. Do you think it might be a loose connection somewhere down there or sth else? I'd be grateful for any advices
))
-
Yeah that definitely does not sound normal... do you mean this happens when you press the laptop itself next to the touch pad? Because if thats the case it certainly sounds like a hardware problem.
-
yeah all it needs is a gentle press, but sometimes even with a hard press nothing happens :confused2: I tried bending the laptop a bit, this also makes it beeps for disconnected device. I just bought it and have 2 years warranty, if it wasnt for this I would've opened it already
)))
-
yeah that sounds like a serious defect I think its best to return it
-
Did you ever put pressure on the usb port , like inserting a usb cable or trying to forcefully insert a pen drive ? Some USB sticks have thicker lips and they do cause a problem when u try and insert them in the ports. This may also end up in permanent damages to the usb port.
-
Nope I haven't done anything like this, I'm quite careful with the electronics, I suspect that the laptop had been returned, someone got a replacement, and they havent even tried to fix this one.
When I bought it it did say used, but there was nothing wrong with it or any marks, I asked what this "used" means and was told that it had been returned or sth, but I still got 2 years warranty, so I guess I'd better pay them a visit
It's a big retailer in UK so there wont be a problem
