Just ordered this and the Wacta sleeve from Amazon. I'm excited and terrified at the same time, it's a lot of money to me and I'm worried that I may have buyers remorse, but I'm sure it's a great notebook. The only thing I'm worried about is the bad comments I've seen about the screen, but there is literally nowhere near me I could have gone to check it out.

Hi, I'm not an owner of a 4820TG but I am currently EXTREMELY close to pulling the trigger haha. I was wondering though, with the release of the SandyBridge processors, will the prices of the current 4820TG go down? I saw it on Amazon today for $799, I was wondering whether it will come down even further in January.

Edit: Oh yeah, quick edit, I was wondering if there is any comparable laptop with dedicated GPU, 14" screen, and good battery life like this one. I can't seem to find anything else like that.

I'm with you. I was going to buy an Envy 14 but after reading on the GPU issues I decided to skip on it esp for the price. I will more than likely buy the 4820TG-7805 since I can live with the lower res screen and the fairly easy to OC 5650. Has anyone OC'd the i5 yet? I can't help but OC anything I own :D

I need a <15" laptop for work, gaming (sc2, cs:s, etc), and tuning my cars ECU (K-Pro). I'm on the fence of using a spare C300 256GB SSD I have laying around or just picking up a G.Skill Phoenix Pro SSD instead and using the C300 for a RAID0 setup in my desktop (i7 930 @ 4Ghz, MSI BB Xpower, 6GB DDR3 1600, HX850w PSU, OC'd GTX 460 - GTX570 or 6970 2GB to replace it soon).

    yo everyone XD
I've bought a 4820T 644G75Mn recently and i've noticed during gaming, the temps of the processor and GPU go up to 80-90degrees(from what i see on HWMonitor) >.<
is it overheating? or are these temps normal?

    here are my specs
    i7-640m
    6gb ram
    ATI 5650
750GB HDD 5200rpm if im nt wrong

    Thanks

I have the AS4820TG-7805 and I want to upgrade the stock 320gb hard drive to a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive.

I have read a few posts on installing this drive in a 3820TG, but I am uncertain on the best way to go about getting the OS and software installed on the new drive.

Is it best to copy the contents of my stock drive onto the new hard drive prior to installing the new drive? Will this allow me to boot right up on the new hard drive without any issues?

Should I start from scratch and run the system restore disks on the new hard drive?

I'm fairly confident that the price of the 4820TG will most likely stay the same and come with better specs or be completely phased out with a newer model from Acer.

However, you will probably find discounts on the older models of the 4820TG when the newer Sandy Bridge laptops start coming out to the market.

Overclocking the Core i5 mostly depends on the PLL that comes with your 4820TG laptop. So far, some people have been successful and some haven't. You'll have to use the shareware version of SetFSB ($5). I believe the owner of SetFSB will tell you if your PLL is compatible or not when you send him some computer information.

I believe the CPU and GPU temperatures runs slightly in sync with each other on the 4820TG due to both parts sharing the same heatsink. So, if your Core i7 is running around 80-90 then most likely your GPU will run somewhere close around there. If you are uncomfortable with the temperatures then you have the option to buy a laptop cooler. However, if you are not experiencing CPU throttling, reaching the TJunction of the CPU or have any serious problems then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I got the momentus xt, the speed diff is worth it. I did a fresh install of win7 64 ultimate and the machine did have some issues after that, that it didn't before. All and All it runs nicely (just not quite as stable), but i don't think i got the drivers perfect. Decided to go back to basic stock video card drivers because i was on a trip and realized that power saving was not working correctly during a flight. I haven't found bronsky's guide for re installs or a guide to exactly what the best drivers to put in after a fresh install are.

Given that this drive is still a mechanical disk at heart, there is no real reason to do a fresh install unless you really just want to. Cloning your current drive to the new drive would be fine. The drive will intelligently and automatically copy your most used files/applications to the SSD portion of the drive for faster access.

I still need to get my Momentus XT replaced... I've owned it for less than half of a year and it's dying.

I read a post from Bronsky a little while back where he said that the timelinex series would be updated with the 6000 series GPU and a new i5 processor before they get phased out. So this question is sort of directed at him, but if anybody else could answer it it'd be great too.

Once these four are sold out, what do you think is the probability of the 4820tgs getting refreshed one last time and get sold on Amazon? And is it worth the stress and worrying to wait for the new cpu/gpus? Or is it not enough of an upgrade to justify my anxiety?

It's difficult to say at the moment. I've read that HP already has Sandy Bridge laptops in Singapore; however, I have no idea if the TimelineX series is going to be refreshed with newer parts/the Sandy Bridge chipset or be completely phased out with a newer model from Acer.

There is a rumor spreading around that Sandy Bridge should be introduced in the next 2-3 weeks from several manufacturers; however, there is no official date from Acer. It could be in January or it could be 4-6 months from now.

It all depends on how many units are still in the distributer's inventory. Dualcore Sandy Bridge models will probably be announced in a few weeks. My guess is that the new units will not be produced until March. So, the 4820TG inventory should still be shipping for a month or so. Hopefully, US distributors are out of the old models and will get one more delivery before the new units start to ship.

Hello people. Been lurking on this thread for a while with great interest as I am planning on buying the 4820T. Unfortunately the 4820tg is out of my budget and the 4820T is readily available in the UK.

These are the specs (won't be performing intensive tasks so these are fine) -

    Acer Timeline X 4820T
    14"
    Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor - 2.13 GHz
    3GB DDR3
    250 GB SATA
    DVD-Super Multi DL drive
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit

    £449.00 (US$ 690.65)

Can anyone shed some light on this deal as I am currently catching up with all the laptop lines available.

    Is the deal good value?

I have read that in January the new Sandybridge processors are going to be released.
Are the prices likely to drop significantly when this happens?
Should I wait until then to purchase a laptop or even the 4820T?

    SD

Sorry, this is my last response for the changes in price for the 4820TG. The same question is being asked consistently and is getting a little bit out of hand.

Refreshed models of the 4820TG will always be similarly priced as the previous 4820TG models (older specs). Do not expect a dramatic change in price anytime soon. The 4820TG has only been out in the U.S. for 6 months; however, I'm not exactly sure if this applies to other countries.

Practically, the only time you will see a decrease in price for the 4820TG is when you luckily find an older 4820TG model in stock, use a retailer discount/deal or when a newer Acer series replaces the TimelineX series.

This logic also applies to the T model of the TimelineX series.

Been trolling for a while now and FINALLY got myself a 4820tg yesterday! Specs are i5 460, 5650, 4gb ram, 640gb hd. Also got myself an 80gb ssd! Had such a hard time cloning the current installation of win7 on the 640gb to the ssd, in the end, I just used abr and installed a fresh copy of win7 64bit :) Going off in a bit to the mall to get myself Starcraft 2 and Lost Planet 2 to enjoy this beast for today, and then tomorrow, autocad and photoshop duties :( Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences! :)

I believe you're not the only one having problems on the 4820TG Core i7-640M laptop. Most likely the Core i7 is running hotter than the Core i3/i5 processors. However, the processor temperature seems to be under the Core i7's TJunction of 105C.

Both the 7805 & 7566 model does not have Bluetooth. The only differences between the two models is that one has a 320GB hard drive and the other has a 500GB hard drive.

    Hi all,
I am happy to post that i have also joined the league of TimelineX 4820TG owners :) . The laptop is awesome. But as i have excitedly going through this thread since many days, I have got the issue of crackling sound. Also when i plug in the headphones, the stereo is inverted and sound is 'SMUDGED'. This headphonr issue is solved when I shift balance to 100% R or L. Now i am going to reinstall the audio drivers and post back the result. Leave a reply if someone has faced same issue.

    Thanks in advance :)

Have you tried disabling "Surround Sound" in the Realtek program to see if that gets rid of the crackling sound?

Anyone know the solutions I should try for the battery life suddenly becoming shorter or the readings being inconsistent?

A little hot... my temps tend to stay below 83c's on cores and gpu when gaming, idk about atitool though.. haven't used it since it stopped supporting newer gpu's. I use OCCT for stress testing.

It probably is the i7 640 running hotter.
Yea try Frys and J&R's... otherwise try importing? Could always go for a 3820tg and try importing it.

Possibility of them coming back into stock with 480m and 6550's maybe.

Can someone recommend me a program to keep track of my notebooks temperatures? Is speedfan viable?

    FYI,

    I checked the acer homepage
    Download

found that there is a new bios 1.22 - no idea what it does
and a few days before christmas they released new video card drivers. version
8.741.1.6 - Oh well these appear to be the same version as released in november for 3820tg. Was hoping for brand new.

Is there a newer version of video card drivers working with power management etc for anyone?

You should store it in a cool dry place as you would expect. charge it to around 50% capacity and store it like that. Storing it with no charge can cause it to drain so low that it wont charge back up ( can't remember why); storing it with a full charge can damage the battery and decrease its maximum capacity.

I have heard a myth about storing it somewhere cold like a fridge. I think this increases the internal resistance of the battery, and as the charge still flows, this can put unnecessary wear on the battery.

Ideally, once a month or so it is best to take the battery out and do a full charge-discharge cycle.

Hope some of this is helpful

In fact I got this nice microfiber towelie (from south park) towel put aside just for that purpose.

Seriously though, I was actually thinking some sort of hard case but then i guess one of those neoprene sleeves would win out in terms of reaping the benefits of such a slim machine?

    Hey all,

Need some help. I purchased my 4820tg back in August. Been having a problem with it. After about 2 months of owning it, it started rebooting on its own when surfing/connected to the internet. If I do not connect to the internet it does not reboot. I tried installing chrome, still does the same thing. Tried with IE no add-ons. still reboots. tried updating video drivers. still reboots. any ideas???? im tired of restoring it to system default. It will be 4 times now since August. thanks all.

If cold temperature increases internal resistance (makes sense), then it should help, theoretically, because discharging rate = power = V^2/R. So by increasing R, we have lower discharging rate ;)

Not sure if it helps, but try reinstalling the wireless driver; there are like three different Atheros wifi drivers in my driver backup folder, and you can identify the correct one by looking at the bottom of the laptop. You should also try disabling auto-reboot if you're getting BSOD and identify the source of the problem.

You should try the software first to see if this solves your problem. There is no review on this software because it is not created by a well-known company, but by a programmer.

This software has solved the stuttering problem for many users who have Western Digital hard drives in their laptops. You can read about it in the Acer Aspire 5740G Owner's Lounge, etc.

Others have complained about this but I can't see it at all. What's your panel? I have an AUO.

I also have an AUO panel and I don't see the pixel/quilt/vertical lines that some people are talking about. Maybe, I got lucky? Maybe, there is a bad batch of 4820TG laptops? Screen quality seems to be inconsistent with every 4820TG laptop so far.

However, I do notice pixels on about every LCD screen in the market today if I literally put my face an inch or closer to any LCD screen. Maybe, some people are more sensitive to the way pixels are displayed on the screen?

I don't notice any display problems with mine yet, everything looks pretty good to me. I don't know how to tell which display I have, but I just got it from Amazon a few days ago. I am noticing some of the poor viewing angles I read about, but it's really not that bad. It looks just fine to me!

The quality of each display panel, even the same model number and manufacturer, are vastly different in build quality. It looks like Acer does not have a quality control system that takes the marginal or defective units out of the product stream. That is why many of us recommend inspecting the display immediately and, if not satisfied, send it back for an exchange unit.

If the game is freezing for a brief second on every keystroke try disabling the 'Windows Event Log' service ('Start' button>right click on 'Computer'>select 'Manage'>select 'Services and Applications'>select 'Services'> select 'Windows Event Log'>select 'Disable' from the startup type drop-down menu>restart computer). I had to do this for GTA4.

    AUO?

I'm not sure; the box says "LCD: 14.0" HD Acer CineCrystal LED LCD".

You'll have to right click My Computer and click Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/Monitors/right click "Your display" and click properties/Details and scroll through the list until you see SEC, AUO, LG, with some numbers.

Sorry, if the steps aren't clear, but I'm at work and the company only has Windows XP computers at the moment. The steps will be slightly different with Windows 7.
