Out of stock everywhere, only old model is probably in micro center.
NVM Amazon.com has IN STOCK.

Also, rule out anything else before concluding its the laptop. Use another laptop and connect to the same router and see if you're having the same problem. Do a side-by-side download/upload and see how the tests compare between those two laptops.
Also, I've had that happen to me many times where the download starts high and then dips very steeply. -
Anyways, I ran the 3dMark06 benchmark and I got a score of 7893, with everything stock. I had my browser window open which I forgot to close when I first ran it...I don't know if that would significantly affect the score at all, I doubt it though, hah.

That's pretty nice! You can probably run Crysis on High with those numbers.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 6550 clocked under its normal speed? -
Hi guys, I need your help. When I do graphic change to high performance the background turns black. I tried to change wallpaper but it is still black. When i chnged to Low performance setting it works fine. What could be the problem??
-
Hmm I have no idea, I thought the 6550 was just an upgraded 5650, I don't really know any more specifics than that, although you could probably go on notebookcheck and look it up.
I have a question though, the past day, I've noticed that even when my laptop is idle, as long as it's on, I can hear the fan working quietly in the background. I'm assuming it's working at about 25-30% of it's maximum capacity, and it never turns off.
Is this a glitch? Is there any way to fix this? Because I feel as if it's completely unnecessary and is draining my battery quicker than it should be. -
-
Is this when you switch from dedicated to integrated GPU and vice versa?
If so, its normal. The display turns off for a short while in order to switch the GPU. -
Hi all,
I have two questions concerning wireless and 4820TG.
I have wireless card and Bluetooth on my Acer.
- is it possible to turn ON bluetooth "automatically"? i mean each time i start the computer i have to enable bluetooth (FN+F3). I would like to have it turned on automatically when computer starts... (like wifi does).
- is it possible to switch on/off wireless automatically when rj45 wire connection is pluged into the computer?
Thanks
Mike -
From integated to dedicated GPU. Background turns black.
It return only to the original wallpaper when i switch back to integrated GPU. -
Hey so have they updated the drivers to a newer version yet for AMD? I am still using the 3820tg 10.11's I think.

OP, please add this link to the first page. Apparently, Newegg has them in stock too.

You can use something like this if you still want to get some use out of the Optical Drive..
Micro Center - Bytecc External SATA to USB 2.0 Slim Optical Drive Enclosure DVD-100 -
Just throwing this out there, what options are there for HDDs between the 5400 drive and SSD?
...Like the Momentus. I haven't heard nice things about it's reliability, though.
What about putting a 60gb SSD in the optical drive bay so that you have some room for startup/programs, then the stock HDD for storage?
I'd like to do something, but i'm on a tight budget. Ideally, everything would be sunshine and bunnies and i'd get a 250gb SSD. -
Acer ePower Management?
I saw this entry in startup program. Is the program included in 4820TG?I can't find it~ -
Michael -
Laptop optical drives for the most part are pretty standard other then some of the drives are slim 9.5mm or 12.7mm tall, they all use the same connectors etc ..
You should not have any problems getting it working in a USB enclosure ... -
Does anyone know if the 14" TimelineX TG is going to be refreshed with the sandy bridge processor and the 6600m AMD GPU?
-
I believe Bronsky mentioned they were redoing ? or dumping the timelineX altogether for a different style of machine so i doubt there would be a SB refresh with the same chassis..
I believe he also mentioned them switching to Nvidia GPUs in the newer machines what ever they may call them..
He posted somewhere in this thread about all the changes but that is just what i remember off the top of my head..
The newer 4820TG with the 6550 is a heck of a deal and the CPU is still very effective and will be for sometime to come so i would try to snag the current model.. -
ok so after doing tons of research and stuff regarding my living in greece problem i have found an offer that ships to greece without any problems.
the specs are these.
Acer Aspire 4820TG-5464G75Mnks mit Intel Core i5 2x 2.53Ghz, 4096MB Ram, 750GB HDD, 14" LED Backlight LCD, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, DVD-Dual / DVD-SuperMulti, Bluetooth 3.0, Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit(english) + english keyboard
price: 725€ incl. shipment.
is this a good spec 4820?
the prices in greece start at 800 and thats for the 512mb radeon.
should i get it?
thanks for the immense help this site has provided in my decision. -
geolink, that's very similar to what I have-- our only difference is the hard drive size. It's been very dependable, plays the latest games on high to max, and the battery can last into the double digits if you tweak the power settings and aren't online.
-
is that a good price though?
how much did you get yours for? -
Hey guys. I'm going to buy the Aspire TimelineX AS4820TG-6847.
Is there anything that you can say is wrong with this laptop? Anything that if you had known now you would not have purchased? I will be buying it within the next 3-4 weeks or so. -
However, as a point of comparison, I did have the older version 4820tg that had the ATI 5650 inside it for a little while, and I'm not sure what it was, but the older model seemed to have a longer battery life than my current one. I don't have any definitive proof of this seeing as I already returned the other one, but it's just a feeling I'm getting.
Other than that though, I've been more than pleased. It runs like a champ, and when a good SSD comes into my price range, I'm gonna slam that baby right in. I think that'll be a good 4-6 month upgrade.
Edit: Oh yeah, I do want to mention one thing though. While this laptop is extremely solid, and feels like a good build, I do feel like Acer sort of skimped on their design of the hinge. While it looks nice, the hinge is sort of a weak spot on the laptop, I feel like in a couple of years, if anything were to break first, it'd be the hinges. -
The version that you've listed here does seem to be an older model of the laptop, the most recent stock has been shipping with the ATI 6550 as well as the i5-480. However, the model you've listed is not really a downgrade at all considering the fact that the 6550 is just a higher clocked and higher volted(?) version of the 5650. In fact, when I go onto the Acer website, it combines the drivers for the 5650 and the 6550.
So yeah, if you can't find the ATI 6550 model in stock anywhere, then I'd suggest that you go for it. Although, if you can wait a little longer, you should take a look at what laptops will come out after the Feb 20th dual-core Sandy Bridge processor announcements. There already have been a couple, and one of the laptops that totally stole my eye was the new Lenovo e420s. It looks ABSOLUTELY stunning, and it can be upgraded with an ATI 6630. However, since it hasn't been released yet, I cannot stake a claim to how well its battery life will be. The press release stated "5.5 hours" or "6.5 hours", I can't recall...but you know how accurate these battery predictions are. Anyways, I'd assume that Lenovo would have better international support and shipping, seeing as you can buy directly from their site, which is why I suggested that laptop to you.
Oh well, good luck on buying a new laptop, whichever it is! -
And yeah, I bought the 4820T as a present for someone and I agree with you on the build quality.
Regarding the battery, how many hours do you get while running off of it? -
-
I'd be happy with 5-6 hours.
How is this baby at handling games? I really hope there are some 6847s left within a month when I decide to buy it. -
guys.. i get around 6 hours on windows 7 32bit.. but only 4 hours on 64bit.. anybody have similar experiences?
-
well, with my 9 cell one the most I could get with very low brightness on power saver is about 10 hours, so i guess with 6 cell about 6 hours is pretty normal
)
-
yeah but what's weird is that 64bit takes up more battery than 32bit?
-
guys I wanted to play Black Ops and found out that I cant overclock my video :S I think it might be cuz I upgraded the BIOS to 1.22 ;(

Anyone know what is causing this?
I have idle temps (28-33C) before closing the lid of my laptop, I go to do something for 10-20 minutes, and when I return to open the lid and start using my laptop my idle temps are at 48-50C. What is the laptop doing while I'm gone that requires the fan to turn on and my idle temps to rise?! -
I think the virenscanner or something else starts to work after a few minutes of idle. -
-
ok i think i have delayed this enough
will there be a sandy briodge remake of this
or should i purchase the current model?
worth the wait? -

Anyone ? I'm out of ideas -
What program you used to overclock ?
-
EDIT: nvm i found why it didn't work, Power Play in CCC has to be enabled -
So i haven't downloaded any new drivers for the ati gfx card since i got this notbook in july and i was wondering if its okay to go straight to the amd site to get the updated drivers because of the switchable gfx?
-
-
if you get the one from amd site, you wont be able to adjust the brightness with the keyboard keys
also I haven't had any problems with the acer's driver at all (playing every game I want and overclocking the graphic card as well)
-
Basically, as a laptop gets warm, so does the environment (the air) immediately around it. When you have the laptop lid completely closed, the pocket of air that between the screen and keyboard gets heated. In that region, since there is barely any circulation, everything gets hotter.
That's one of the reasons I never completely close the lid when my laptop is still on. If anything, I bring the lid to about an inch above it's closed position. -

I know there's a site policy about not linking to repair manuals. HOWEVER, the repair manual for the 4820T/TG is on acer's support site and easily found with google. Is linking to the acer support site and the repair manual still verboten? Is giving the search terms that will let you find it on google also verboten? Is just mentioning that it's on the acer support site and google can find it verboten? If so, please delete this message.
