Hey guys, what drivers are the best for the HD 5650's? I've been trying to install 11.1, but it just crashes on restart and 11.4 says my HW is incompatible.

Few months ago i read on a page of this forum of a user that was about to change the monitor putting a better 1600x900. Did he make it eventually?

 

Great deal, just ordered mine. I found others around the web, but most don't seem to include the cable or give as much information.

 

I've had this thing since like December or something and I still freaking LOVE IT. I played portal 2 on it half the time and the other half on my desktop.

Has the price and size on SSD's dropped yet? I am considering reformatting soon and adding in a nice SSD to replace my dvd drive.

Last I heard, the BIOS didn't support it - so a no-go. Haven't heard of a modded bios for that, either...

 

Has anyone been successful at fitting this thing with a intel 6300? Is it worth it? is there a better option with possibly bluetooth integrated?

 

No point in buying 6300 as you don't have a third antenna not do you have 450mbps capable router (there are only few of those)
Go for 6230- it's a 6200 with BT.

 

I called around and parts aren't available to the 4820 yet. Does the 4810 use the same chasis (bottom cover)? It looks a bit different.

 

Hi, I'm thinking on upgrading the ram. From cpuz it says the ram model is pc3-10700 Kingston 2 gb. From google I read that it's the 1333 type, not 1066. So do I have to get the same 1333 type and brand? Will it be stable if I want to add 4gb more, making a total 6gb. Help, some advice please.

 

doesn't matter, if you get 1066 both chips will downclock to 1066

 

I got myself a 4gb 1333mhz ram. It works fine it just down clocks itself.

 

got this notebook last dec 2010. will be doing A LOT of backreading, i got the
i5-460m version but sadly only 2gb of ram..

 

So, I've upgraded to 4gb ram. It fills the slot 3 and not slot 2. Is that right? Another thing I notice area below the touchpad is hotter. Before, that area is usually cool no any heat, haha I'm a bit afraid right now.

 

I have two questions

1)does disassembling the laptop void the warranty?
2) i have three blurry spots on my LCD screen. I see it in the bios. I only see it when the background is black. I think this is the lcd issue. any idea?

 

If still under warranty I would try calling to see about getting it fixed rather than risk breaking something.

 

I recall someone else reporting a similar problem. They had to RMA the unit and send it to the repair depot.

Hi all,

I've been using the 4820tg as my main computer now for a while, and getting more comfortable using it and also getting to know some of the reccuring issues. This computer is clean installed and running Windows 7, and I used the original drivers that came with the computer. Three issues I am having now are:

1. Occasionally the AMD video driver crashes and recover shortly after. However, once this happen the window, say a browser that I am currently using is acting funny because I can't maximize or close it normally. I have to end the program and restart the program again. On the event viewer it says display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and successfully recovered.

2. When I use windows live messenger 2011, the program freezes occasionally. This usually happen when I am on intel gpu.

3. Windows update doesn't show there is SP1.

I think driver updates can fix these issues, but Acer haven't release driver update for a while. Do you know if there will be official GPU driver update soon? Do you think Acer aware of that there are issues with the current driver? Otherwise, does anyone know where and how I can update both drivers? Will using AMD driver downloaded from AMD works without issue? This thread is huge so I might have missed some info.

Also, you can download newer AMD graphic drivers (ignore ATI or Intel seperate drivers) from the Acer website.

 

so no one knows why my ati graphic doesnt work? In cpu-z it only shows intel graphic. The ati driver is installed. Even when the modded bios is flashed. It still didn't show in the bios. Maybe the ati graphic chip died?

I've heard they really optimize your GPU's performance, but I'd like to know if anyone has attempted this before I try it myself.

 

I overclocked my 6550m with Sapphire Trixx and got some good results. the overvolting ability that Trixx has over afterburner allowed me to get that core way higher than I thought, almost a 50% oc

I tested the new clocks at 890/1035 and, with the new catalyst 11.4 drivers, got P1674 in 3dmark 11

 

Thanks for the link, it mentions the problem and general solution. I am not sure downloading intel driver from intel will work for this laptop. Do you know how to update intel driver? I don't want to force install sp1 if it will make Windows Live Messenger crashes more often.

Also, where is the newer AMD graphics drivers in the Acer website? All I see for the 4820TG is AMD driver version 8.741.1.6000, which I believe contains both the intel and AMD drivers as a package.

I have a problem with the Switchable graphics. It changes the video card while I browsing the internet, or writing a Word document. It's very annoying to switch again and again back to intel hd. Can I lock the graphics card on Intel?

Other question: How can I launch and configure the Acer PowerSmart manager.

Isn't the 6550 already overvolted? Can't overvolting it even mess up the GPU or the MoBo?

 

Does anyone know where I can get this laptop (the i5 one)? I saw priceguidenetwork but I am not so sure on how good of a place that is to buy. Fticomputer has it as well but they only do Drop-Shipping from Manufacturer ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_shipping). Any help would be appreciated

lol, now this is funny. contacted acer, they confirmed it's an issue and will repair under travelers warranty. In the meantime, I flew back home, did some traveling and was planning to send it back for repair when I come back to UK.
The sound wasn't working properly at home, but when I came to UK and started the laptop for the first time, I did hear the windows sound from the speakers and now everything is as it should be. I guess a little bit of shake and high altitude did help

 

I usually always have my headphones plugged in. But now that you mentioned it, I too am having that problem. Just a few days ago I was playing BFBC2 and I was getting full sound from the laptop speakers, but now I am not. I will be doing a clean install soon, so hopefully it'll fix everything.

 

when i first experienced sound issues, the first thing I did was to reinstall drivers. The second thing I did was to do a clean windows install. None of that helped.

I saw 4820tg at a shop, keyboard was fine but screen casing was very thin, is it going to affect the screen in the long run?? Is it having an express card slot?

 

1, and like did you expect a thick screen casing on a thin laptop?
2, if you saw it in store, you would have seen if it's got the express card slot.

Please has anyone had any luck with installing Mac OSX on their acer timeline X? i have one and i would like to install the Mac OSX because apparently, Connectify didnt work with my card and i dont have a wireless router (my internet is modem based). It is imperative that wireless works with the Mac installation. Please help anyone Please

Or if anyone has any other software that may be used to create a wireless access point in windows, that would be wonderful. My android and blackberry dont support the windows adhoc network but have no issues connecting to my dads macbook pro's shared network.

I'd like to hear your exp about the fan on TG4820 i3. I always read that the fan is most of the time silent (office apps).
This is what I am experiencing:
1) Aspire, idle, ATI graphic on: fan always on, medium speed level (in small room audible).
2) Aspire, idle, INTEL graphic on: fan on after a few minutes, then always on low speed level (2 meters audible).
Idle= no apps running, almost no background apps running. CPU mainly at 3%, always <10%. All energy settings at LOW.

If I manually stop the fan (for example with AA1FanControl), in Idle (2) the core temp goes up till 70°C, after ca. 15 minutes.

What do you think? Is this normal?

no, it's not normal to manually stop the one and only fan that cools the internal components, while the notebook is switched on.

Why would you stop the fan? It can be a fire hazard. And the 4820TG is fairly quite, imo and very suitable for an office setting.

Also, Kefan. I see you have 8gb of RAM. Did you notice any increase in performance when you switched from 4GB to 8GB? I'm debating whether or not to spend the money on 8GBs of RAM. From what I've heard, it's not really beneficial unless you're a crazy multitasker or something.

 

I cannot tell, I just switched it on with 4GB for like 5 mins, to make sure it works fine and then swapped it for 8GB. (my upgrade arrived with laptop and at the same time I made a clean windows install onto the SSD)

but with SSD and 8GB of Ram I cannot complain about the speed

I guess the performance increase would be noticeable only with few demanding programs, but I purchased 8GB to be more future-proof, so that when I buy a new laptop, I could just swap the Ram there again. It's got lifetime warranty anyway.

at the moment, the best is that I don't have to close my Opera browser with 40 tabs open, while I play Metro 2033 and have few programs in the background and can switch between these programs instantly

 

Hey guys I'm trying to install my new SSD into acer and I want to use the original 640gb hard drive as a data drive, which involves wiping the OS from that hard drive. But I don't want to accidentally wipe the partition that contains my acer recovery too though; do you guys know which is which? I read somewhere earlier that there is 3 different partitions on the hard drive: 2 small ones and then the big ~600gb partition.

 

anyone tried replacing the 14" screen with something of a higher resolution and/or matte version? love the power of this laptop, hate it's screen.

hello guys, i found a way on how to increase the display quality on this laptop. as we all know the lcd is high in brightness but lacks of color. here is the fix. open your catalyst control center then go to my built in displays and select display color. under color correction max out saturation to 200. u will notice the screen become more colorful.also, u will notice better post-processing effect on games such as dirt 2 and battlefield bad company 2.

 

Whoaaa, that's vivid. I couldn't stand it at 200, knocked it down to about 150. Looks good.
