laper, can you check the hardware ID for your 6550?

    EDIT:
This is supported by the driver
    "AMD Radeon HD 6550M" = ati2mtag_Manhattan_PXAI, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68C1&SUBSYS_051B1025

you have to use driver sweeper in safe mode after uninstall to get rid of all the driver's remains on the system, otherwise if you install the new one over it, you might get issues.

    or perform a clean install.

(i personally prefer clean install, just to make sure, the whole system is clean and unaffected)

    Thanks for your suggestion.

I tried both official Acer driver, 1) the Acer driver for 4820TG that is buggy, and 2) the latest AMD driver for 3820TG. I tried clean install both drivers, but for 2), it did not install when I tried that a few weeks ago. Option 1) is what I am using now.

I have not tried the modded driver. I prefer to use the official driver if possible but it looks like I might have to try it. Do you have any experience with it?

The hardware ID under the AMD Radeon HD6550M are:
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68C1&SUBSYS_051D1025&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68C1&SUBSYS_051D1025
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68C1&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68C1&CC_0300

The hardware ID under Intel HD graphics are:
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0046&SUBSYS_051D1025&REV_18
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0046&SUBSYS_051D1025

Great that it works for you.

Just curious, do you update your Windows 7 to SP1 assuming you are using Windows 7? Also, do you use live messenger?

Woops. nevermind, I just saw your answer earlier.

You can use the 8.771.1 driver. I don't know what happens, but sometimes when installing a driver, even after cleaning with Driver Cleaner.NET, the installation fails. I just keep installing/uninstalling until it installs the new drivers successfully. Just make sure both the GPUs are shown as "Standard VGA Adapter" or something like that in device manager before you try to install new drivers.

    EDIT:
Sorry, I thought it said 051 B1025 (which is supported) while your ID is 051 D1025.

Have you tried installing 8.771.1 driver on your 5820TG? Does it work?

5650 and 6550 are more less the same thing, so even the drivers should be compatible.

Kefan777, that's what I thought too until I tried it a couple of weeks ago. But at that time I did not use drive sweeper.

Hmm, I'll try it again either tonight or this weekend. I will try uninstalling the existing driver and clean it again with driver cleaner as suggested both of you.

I'll post it here on how it goes.

    Thanks guys!

Yes it's true that they're more or less the same hardware but they have different hardware IDs in the .inf file. It seems the hardware ID laper posted here is not supported by the 8.771.1 driver.

    Hi everyone,

I bought the Acer Aspire 4820TG just yesterday. The battery is taking too long to charge (I really mean too long! Like Hours!). Is this normal? :/

It takes my 4820TG 2 to 3 hours to charge from 0 to 100%. Is your % charged changing? Maybe your power supply is weak or you're working the machine hard while recharging. If you are it will take longer to chage than if the machine is working lightly or at idle.

Looks like the same socket, same TDP... possible?

I updated my Atheros WIFI drivers from the ones at laptopvideo2go and now my WIFI LED light won't turn on anymore. I tried installing the original drivers from the Acer site but it didn't fix the problem. Does anyone know where I can get back the working drivers? Thanks

You mean the light doesn't work or Wi-Fi doesn't work at all? Check in device manager if the driver is installed correctly. If it is than re-install Launch Manager. The most recent drivers are here. I can confirm these work as I'm using them right now.

    TurboBoost is supported.

Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Notebook / Aspire / Aspire 4820TG

    3 seconds with google..

i don't get your point. the only cheaper 620Ms i found on ebay were ES and QS, which I would not put in my machine anyway.

why don't you just listen to all the other ones, saying i7 620M is not worth it?

if you want an upgrade and you're willing to spend 150 USD, buy an SSD. much more worthwhile than upgrading the CPU.

for god's sake all you people wanting to put i7 and quad cores into 4820T(G), seriously, what is wrong with you ?

Update: I tried installing the 8.771.1 driver from the 3820TG drivers list on Acer website again. I confirmed that my HD6550M is not recognized by this driver. The hardware ID is preventing me to use this driver.

Oh well, it is either waiting for Acer to push the update or use the modded hybrid driver.

1/ The Fn Buttons work but I don't see the icons on the screen. What should I do to have them back?
2/ What are the steps to update the BIOS?

what icons do you want to see? acer utilities?
why do you want to update BIOS?

but anyway, if you download the new bios from acer web, it should contain a flash utility with instructions - very easy to follow.

Also, have we found a way to get updated AMD drivers and still have switchable graphics?

depends on how much are you willing to spend.

    220 USD will buy you 128GB m4.

and yes we did, instructions are on the first page for quite some time.

Ok I thought I installed the latest drivers. I followed the directions. But device manager says my drivers are still from 2010... so I guess not.

And about the SSD, to replace my ODD with an SSD don't I need an adapter?
    I am considering this one
Amazon.com: OCZ Technology 60 GB Vertex 2 Series SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD22VTXE60G: Electronics
If I could also buy an adapter with it that would be cool.
(reading the reviews have me concerned though because it seems like a lot of people have failure after 3-4 months)

i wouldn't buy vertex 2, if there's 3 already out there. for reliability go intel.

and it depends if you replace hdd with ssd and keep odd, or take out odd in favor of ssd in adapter and keep hdd in place.

    for adapters, check ebay.

    After reading this thread

I think I may go with an older drive like this
    Amazon.com: Kingston Digital SSDNow V+100 96 GB Solid-State Drive SVP100S2/96G: Electronics
Perhaps I will get a little more space out of an ssd since it sounds like you don't get the full speed experience on our laptops. Someone said that earlier in this thread.

Also is this the right adapter for ODD to HDD?
Amazon.com: NEW SATA 2nd HDD caddy for 9.5mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM ACER BENQ HP DELL ASUS: Electronics

I'm not exactly sure how to install it but I guess I will figure it out.

doesn't matter, if you buy SSD, you may keep it longer than the laptop itself, so don't limit yourself on how the drive behaves in the 4820TG.

in a year's time you might be using it in a completely different laptop.

to the adapter - there are guides online, but basically unscrew the screw holding ODD, take out ODD, unscrew the bracket from ODD, put it on the caddy, place SSD in the caddy, put the caddy into the open space, where ODD originally was and screw that one screw back on, so it holds in place.

drives wise : Vertex 3 max IOPS is probably the fastest you can get, Intel 510 are reliable, and good all rounder is m4.

but almost any SSD will be a significant upgrade. I'm not a big fan of Kingston SSDs, but if you want to go cheap, I guess that 96GB one from amazon is OK.

the problem was the mobo, as I sold the battery and the buyer was happy (it was almost new)

try to get to someone with the same battery (that is proven to work), if the problem disappears, then buy a new battery.

from germany if you want genuine, from ebay if you don't mind.

if the problem will persist even with new battery, you are likely to need the mobo repaired/replaced --> RMA if in warranty, head for nearest PC repair if not.

I have a strange problem on my Timeline X which i can't make any sense of.

There seems to be incredible amounts of lag when typing in facebook and gogole.com when using google chrome. And even using firefox there seems to be some lag when typing in google. I thought it was just because the cpu was underclocked while I had the laptop set to power saver mode. But even at full performance mode with the cpu running at 100%, it seems to lag when I type. any suggestions?

well, if the cpu's running at 100%, if you only browse the web, then you're quite likely to have a virus/spyware.

anyway I would perform a clean install and then report if you still got issues.

My new laptop crashed several times, I thought that having the latest BIOS can solve the problems.

I found several versions on the Acer support website. Do I have to install the last one or I have to install them all one by one?

My default BIOS is 3.17 (I wanted to back it up but I can't find it on this website o_O)

what makes you think the crashes are caused by BIOS?

I'd say it has more to do with OS /drivers/ applications, and possibly overheating or faulty hardware.

with updating the BIOS, you only download the latest one and then reflash it according to instructions provided.

your default BIOS is definitely not 3.17, if the highest version is 1.25.

I just bought a new Wireless N router (Linksys E4200) and the fastest it will connect is 130 Mbps. Is this normal? I was hoping for faster considering this router is capable of 450 Mbps.

I have the my Acer 4820TG with the Broadcomm N wifi card.

You need to set channel width to 40MHz in advanced driver settings of your Wi-Fi card- that's provided it supports 40MHz which I don't know (I'd need a model number to know that)
You won't be able to achieve 450mbps regardless- you need a Wi-Fi card that can do it- Intel 5300, 6300 or Atheros AR9380 based card like Bigfoot 1103.

Is it difficult to swap the wifi card? I've never done it before in a laptop.

It's pretty easy to swap the hard drive, ram, or wifi card on a 4820tg. 4 screws on the bottom, pry up the cover at the area where it has a kind of scooped out bit under it at the side. Take your time, it should just pop right up. The antenna should snap straight up and off of the card. But if you're not sure find a friend who knows how to do simple stuff on laptops to help.
