HELLO!! im new to the forum. I have had an acer timelineX 4820T for about a year now. and i LOVE IT!! its just as good as my Macbook Pro! except for that the battery life lasts much longer. lol.

Anyways i have a question about overclocking this pc. It seems i cannot access any sort of advanced options from the bios screen. I am very disappointed because i know the i5 chip can handle a good bit of overclocking. any ideas???

There's no official set of Mobile Cats 11.10 yet- I was talking about beta that floated somewhere on the net.
I even posted the links myself but I can't seem to be able to find them- apparently I post too much.

Usually the problem is not the burner but the quality of the media.
Use good quality CDs and DVDs.

    Hi,

I've succesfully installed Catalyst 11.10 Preview3 which support Mobility cards (but not mentionned) since preview 2. On a 4820TG with Windows 7 x64 Pro

Here is what i've done :
    - Install 11.8 Driver from Acer Website
    - Download 11.10 preview 3
    - Start install and select manual Installation. Then you install only the radeon driver and HDMI/DP driver, but NOT install Catalyst Control Center.
    - Reboot
    - Done !

I've seen a 4fps increase in BF3, switchable support (but not tested for long, like 10minutes) with ultra texture, medium for other option, 2x AA, SSAO on. i've got around 28-31fps, so it's playable in 1366x768.

If you have installed 11.10 preview 3, but with catalyst control center, you will have to uninstall it, reboot in safe mode, clean using driver sweeper (delete all ATI stuff), reboot and install my way !

I assume it still works fine with catalyst driver 11.9 from the AMD website ?

Whats the install process if im coming from a different driver version? I think i have 10.8 or something. Do i just install the new ones over it? Ive run into issues with uninstalling drivers on my 4820 in the past as the double driver and the swittching hing just makes it angry.

Also, will the new driver change overclocking? Right now im able to overclock my 5650 to 750/1150 with the amd clock monitor tool and i dont want to mess with a good thing if its not going to work.

Hay guys am looking to add some ram to my 4820T as its a bit sluggish now. Its a UK version with the i3 2.13Ghz and 3gig ram. Does anyone know what ram bus speeds the laptop can accept?

    Thanks

You can use 1333 but it will downclock to 1066. They're basically the same price these days. Get what's on sale.

    Hi,

    Sorry for the wait.

You can find acer drivers on this webpage :
    http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?modelId=2076

    I don't know your config (x86 or x64 ?)
A direct link for 64bits (just by seeing the name, it's also for x86.
    http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...Aspire 4820TG&OS=721&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_27

But first uninstall your curent dirver, clean with Driver Cleaner (ask google to download it) and then install the 11.8, reboot (even if the setup process doesn't ask you to), then the 11.10 preview 3, reboot (again) and enjoy.

Follow these steps and you will be fine !

So what are the most stable AMD drivers to use? It seems in the past there were various conflicts with certain things like the Fn+__ keys not working, things like that. Are those problems gone with the newer catalyst drivers?

Is there anything else I should make sure to upgrade along with the video drivers?

    uhm Hi ppl,
what id like to ask is, my acer4820 just shut down once when in energy saving mode and till then it cant turn on anymore. if u press the start button it starts for a second, does the sound, then it makes a noise in the cd drive and after 1 second turns off again.

it didnt fall. i was playing some games though on it half an hour before which makes it get preety hot but it wasnt that extreme and the vent wasnt blocked.

anyone maybe know what could have happened ?

    Thanks

Will it start if you unplug it and try to start it? Try switching to dedicated GPU in the bios at start-up and see if it will start. Then try starting it in safe mode and let us know what happens.

If it won't post to the bios, you have a serious problem. Are you outside your warranty period? If not, get it back to the repair depot. My guess is that you had a component fail on the motherboard, preventing it from loading the bios properly and completing the power on self test (post).

aha, thanks, its under warranty, so i guess ill have to send it to repair.. do you maybe know why this could occur (if we assume the component fail) ? Could it be cause of overheating? 4820 does only have one vent at one side so it can get preety hot.. how much does a notebook like this handle

    Hi,

is anybody planning to buy Skyrim? Do you expect it to run on the stock 4820TG? The minimum requirements are for "normal" hardware so I am unsure how to convert this to the means of a notebook...

You can find out here YouGamers - System Requirements

It scans your system and checks if you've met the requirements for Skyrim. I think it should run no problem at all on the 4820TG with the HD5650 and i3,i5,i7 cpus.

You can test for other games as well on YouGamers.com

The problem I find with those websites is that they don't look at your clock speeds per-say, just your memory. a desktop 3850 GPU with 512 MB VRAM is still more capable than the 6550 or 5650 with 1 GB VRAM. If a minimum requirement asks for a 3850 with 512 MB, and it sees that someone has 1 GB RAM, even if its a 6330m, it will give them the go ahead.

Btw, anyone else pre ordered AC:Revelations?

Yeah, it works on medium with AA, or medium-high with no AA at around 40 fps,
however there is a weird lighting glitch where the ground is dark grey and there are lighting "patches", and its really annoying. There currently isn't a fix. Is anyone else having this problem

EDIT: Skyrim should work fine on the 4820tg also, as its still only dx9, and heavily optimized. I wouldn't expect it to be able to run it on ultra or anything, but it should be fine.

No, I didn't encounter this problem. Perhaps you should update your graphics drivers to the new official AMD catalyst driver 11.10.

EDIT Ive uninstalled/driversweeped the old drivers, and whenever i try to install either VGA package from the acer site it only gives me the option to install the ati catalyst install manager and a c++ redist. :C

Extract the files from VGA.zip and install the drivers.

VGA AMD VGA Driver (Radeon HD 5650 / 5470 / 6550M / 6370M) 8.84.7.4 218.3 MB 2011/08/25 should be both the ATI and Intel drivers. Make sure that you are on "switchable graphics" in BIOS and make sure you restart after installing the drivers.

I have just installed a Crucial M4 128GB on my 4820TG. Impressed by it so far, it was really worth the upgrade for me.

The 4K write speed is a bit low but I've read it's a common problem in Intel chipsets, do any of you know more about this?

Also, since I had to make a clean installation of Windows, what drivers/applications from Acer should I install? I installed Intel Chipset 9.2.3.1022 + Intel Rapid Storage 10.6.0.1002. As for the video cards I installed Intel VGA driver from Windows Update at first and later I downloaded VGA Driver (Radeon HD 5650 / 5470 / 6550M / 6370M) 8.84.7.4 from Acer Download website and that seemed to work: I can now switch between both video cards. Is it all correct so far?

Now, I have a doubt about the Turbo Boost. What should I install between:

    Code:
    - Turbo Boost Driver (Manageability Engine Code) 6.0.0.1179 40.2 MB
    - Turbo Boost Driver 1.0.1.1002 2.9 MB
    Thanks in advance! :D

The simplest way seems to be, to disable the processor driver.

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me with my DVD player in my 4820tg. I have a HDMI hooked from my output to the input on my TV. I am able to get video to the TV and everything seems ok (the DVD player only decides to work 50% of the time as it thinks I am trying to steal the DVD or something), but the audio is coming out of the speakers on the computer and not on the TV. Thing is, last night I watched a movie and the sound was coming from my TV and i made no changes since then. I checked my sound options and i don't see anything to make it output sound through the HDMI. Any idea how to do that? I've tried hooking up the HDMI as i started the computer and that didn't help either. It seems that the audio device isn't seeing that i am hooking up a HDMI cable or something. It is getting really frustrating as I'd like to just be able to plug a HDMI in, put a DVD in the player and hit play, but that doesn't seem to be the case... :( :( :(

Memory has been quite cheap for the past couple of months. I'm wondering if upgrading to 6 or 8 gigs of RAM in the 4820TG would provide a noticeable improvement in every day performance?

I still have the garbage 5400 RPM stock HDD, so I'm not sure which would be a better investment, but with holiday sales coming up I'm hoping I can get good deals on both. However, the reported hard drive shortage might drive up costs.

Has anyone put a Momentus XT in this thing?

    Hi,

I have Skyrim now and can confirm that it runs. However, I have to say that I don't use the stock HDD and use a 24" screen.

The auto-detection said that it set the options to "high" when I stared for the first time. This confuses me a little... When I open the "in game" graphics options it only lets me chose the viewing distance of different objects. Nothing about textures. But the textures are what I didn't like too much so far: I have seen some really ugly snow textures that I even wondered if it might be a graphics bug.
Also, I feel like it doesn't run 100% smooth so I am tempted to either turn down quality or play on the laptop screen.

Should I use the graphic card driver by Acer (v8.840.7.4000) or can I use a newer one directly from AMD without (!) having any trouble with the switchable graphics?

Before I did a clean install on my notebook, I used the AMD drivers and everything installed perfectly. No troubles at all with the switchable. And on top of that, my perfromance was A LOT better with the AMD driver. I think I scored another 600-800 points with the AMD driver in 3dMark06.

However, after the clean install, I've been having some troubles installing the AMD drivers. idk whats going on. I want to use AMD in place of Acer's, tbh.

And btw, I'm planning to get Batman Arkham City since I can purchase it for 20%. Would this laptop with the 6550 OCed to 700/1000 be able to handle it at stock or 1280x720 resolution? Any ideas?

Anyone buy a replacement battery yet? The one I currently have is at 25% wear level. It still gets 5-6 hours or so depending on use.

I wouldn't mind a battery with more cells just in case I need a lot of power for extended trips.

Don't buy one. If you're still under warranty just call up Acer and tell them your battery won't hold a charge anymore. They will ship you a new one in less than a week. You can also get the recovery disks from them for free if you tell them you're having a problem with your computer, it won't boot up and request the recovery disks to troubleshoot the problem. I got both of these things very easily from them a few months ago. Acer is very lenient with giving out things, although they do have Indians doing their customer service.

Skyrim runs great on mine, on high. Make sure you have mip-map set to "max quality" in catalyst control center, otherwise textures look really bad.

There's no such thing as a 3GB RAM stick. You have 1GB stick and 2GB stick using both available slots so you'll have to remove both and replace with what you buy (probably 4GB + 4GB)

i called up acer guys they told me that ur machine wont support 8gb RAM
moreover i was planning to remove (1 gb ram stick )and replace it with 4gb ram stick
and they even advised me against doing this they told that the make, frequency and size all should be the same
    (frequency is fine)
shud size also be the same?
so at max u can go for this combo(2+2)
