    Acer Hidden Recovery Partition

    in my backup dvd i have an iso file.I have extracted and saw various files on it

    can someone explain me what this means

    Both files have a .cmd file with same name.
    On File P2P3DSK.txt and P3P4DSK.txt they assign letter=T , so what this means?

    Has anyone sucessfully restore factory default with vista, using the ALT+F10 D2D function at BIOS boot up?

    My eRecovery not working only constantly ask for password to restore but not doing anything after reboot

    i deleted my PQSERVICE (but made backup dvds) No i want to restore PQService and i need to know what files do i need inside PQSERVICE beside D2D.
    I have copied D2d(basically is the content of the backup dvds) to drive and managed to Alt-F10 to work but now it appears just after hit Alt-F10 the following message:

    "This is not a bootable disk. Please insert a bootable floppy and try again"

    So i need the missing files to make it boot from hidden partition can anyone share or tell me what files are still needed?

    And with no help from the outside world. Here's what the process was:

    I unhid the PQservice partition with PTEDIT32, an old freeware utility from PowerQuest (you can find it if you search. It's also available on another notebook forum if you become a member), and changed it from type 27 to 7.

    To make this work, you have to right-click the app, and choose Run As Administrator.

    This allowed me to find MBRWRWIN.EXE and the various MBR images that were in that partition. I grabbed it and RTMBR.BIN and put them on a flash drive.

    I then tried to run MBRWRWIN, and Vista would not allow it to write to the MBR (clever, clever).

    So I booted with UBCD for Windows (EVERYONE should have a copy of this!) and ran the utility from the flash drive, and rewrote RTMBR.BIN. This was a fatal error. I made a backup of the original MBR, but that was of no help. Read on...

    Everything broke. I mean, EVERYTHING. RTMBR.BIN is the WRONG MBR image for Vista machines (at least mine). Now, the partition information and MBR were completely hosed, pointers were wrong, everything. The drive is totally dead.

    Drums stop, very bad, very bad.

    I had made a backup of the MBR, but forgot to take it off of the drive. Now, I couldn't access it. Lovely. Stupid!

    It took about a day of poking around the drive with various tools to deduce the partition structure, start sectors, end sectors, etc. I was finally able to reconstruct the partition information with DISKTEST, a freeware DOS-based disk tool that gives complete control over everything. It's not a tool for the faint-of-heart. Between it and PTEDIT32, I got everything repaired.

    Now, the partition information is correct. I then ran FIXMBR via the Windows Recovery Console (remember that wonderful tool, UBCD for Windows? You need it!)

    Now, the partitions are there again. Unfortunately, the main partition has had something bad happen to it (surprise, surprise, surprise!) It won't boot, and I can't see files or folders on it. With ANYTHING. Huh. So I unhide the PQService partition with MBRWizard, and voila! Everything is there.

    Using MBRWizard, I make that partition active (bootable), and make the main partition inactive. I reboot.

    Woooo! Acer eRecovery starts! OOOO! The restore starts... and fails, with an obscure error. Huh.

    I look again at the main partition. All the low-level tools show it as the correct size, but it's reporting itself to be 1MB in size when you look at it from Windows. That's, well, ugly. So I decide that since it's hosed anyway, and it's either going to be restored from PQSERVICE or with a fresh install of something else, I format it, after hiding the PQSERVICE partition (don't want to format THAT!!) just in case.

    It formats fine, to 67 GB or whatever. To be safe, I formatted it FAT32. I unhide the PQSERVICE partition, and reboot.

    eRecover starts, runs, restores and exits. Wooohooooo!

    I then run MBRWizard again, to hide the PQService partition, make it inactive and to make the main partition active. Reboot.

    Windows Vista installs and restores. YAY! Mission accomplished.

    Here's what you need to know so that you don't experience the pain I did.

    MBRWRWIN doesn't make MBR backup images in a format that other MBR utilities can read. Stupid, but apparently true. So, what you need to do is make a backup of your MBR with something like MBRWizard BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING. Save that backup somewhere OTHER than the HDD you are messing around with. This cannot be stressed enough. If you hose that disk, this will be your only recovery.

    This will allow you to try the various *MBR*.BIN images lying around the PQSERVICE partition. If the one you try is wrong, boot from DOS or UBCD, restore the MBR backup you made with MBRWizard, reboot and then try the next one.

    It's possible that none of them will work. If this is the case, or if you don't want to fool with MBRWRWIN and the various dangerous MBR images, then do the below.

    To do a restore when your ALT-F10 function doesn't work:

    1) Make a backup of your existing MBR with MBRWizard. And put it somewhere other than the HDD you're screwing with (duh!).

    2) Using PTEDIT32, write down every single parameter it shows for each partition, before you do anything else. If something bad happens, you'll know how to put it all back. Then, change the PQSERVICE partition to type 07 from type 27, and make it bootable by changing boot type from 00 to 80. Make the other partition not bootable by changing it from 80 to 00. Save the changes and exit.

    3) Reboot, and go to setup in BIOS to make sure D2D recovery is on (not sure that this matters in this case, but set it anyway).

    The system should boot to the PQService partition (presuming it's intact), and restore. If it doesn't, I don't know what to tell you. If it starts and then fails, try formatting the main partition FAT32 and boot again.

    4) After the restoration, use PTEDIT32 to reset the values back. PQSERVICE goes back to type 27, boot 00, main partition goes to type 07, boot 80.

    5) Use MBRWizard to hide the PQSERVICE partition. For some reason, Vista can still see the partition if all you do is change it back to type 27. Odd.

    The only problem with this method is that it does NOT re-enable the ALT-F10 function, at least in my case.

    I think I've the exact same issue as you MulMul...
    My buddy just brought me back my laptop from work, so I setting it back to default using the backup I created the day I purchased it...only a few months ago now.
    I popped in the disk and rebooted, told me it was reading from RAMDRIVE, brought me a nice recovery screen that gives me a choice of multiple languages, I take english, it then tells me I should plug in my AC so I do, then it begins the long recovery to partition 2 being my C:

    Now upon going through both dvds it has me reboot, and I do. Then I get a blank black screen, no scribbles, no cursor no nothing.

    So I have no OS to work with at all now

    ALT-f10 does not work either, please help LOL

    A new development...
    Just for the sake of trying I tried F8...and it brought me up windows xp options...keeping in mind that I am using my vista premium backups....

    hi, are you able to send the rtmbr.bin file to me also has i am also unable to locate it, also searched hidden files but found none with **mbr.bin

    The image file of the MBR for your machine will not reside in the regular, visible C: drive- it's in the hidden PQSERVICE partition. You need to unhide that partition, search for the file and move it and the winwrmbr executable over to some other media. See my post above.

    Be cautioned that there may be more than one MBR image floating around in the hidden partition. There were at least 5 on my machine. ONLY ONE will be correct for your hard drive geometry. Make sure you back up your existing MBR on media other than the HDD you are messing with before you start doing anything. I suggest using MBRWizard (freeware) to do this.

    You'll also need some other means of booting the machine before you start doing this. If you mess up your MBR, the machine won't boot, and you'll have no means of undoing your new mess.

    You'll need either UBCD for Windows, or a bootable DOS CD. MBRWizard comes in both Windows and DOS versions.

    Make SURE you can boot off whatever alternative you choose before you start.

    BTW - found out how to restore the Acer MBR to make Alt-F10 work --- I installed an old version of Windows (in this case, XP -- which is what I wanted to do in the first place) onto the boot drive. [Little did I realize I overwrote the MBR when installing XP]. Using PTEDIT, I made the hidden partition type 07. Rebooted, and I could access the PQService partition in Windows Explorer. Ran the MBR execution file in that partition -- rebooted -- and voila, alt-F10 works!
    Now, I have XP loaded (which I wanted anyway), and when I increase my RAM down the road, I can load the VISTA using ALT-F10!
    Wouldn't have known where to start without your wonderful walkthru!

    Hi there.Im new here and I had this problem when i wanted to boot my acer 5594WMXi from the recovery dvd and suddenly there's this msg that said "partition is not found","cannot find preload.tag for SetBoot.Ini"...I don't really know much about computers so please help me!

    Have a "AcerPower S260" The sound messed up then the next day could not get it to reboot. Did the Alt + F10 and it restored. But then it would start to load windows for about 3 sec. then reset and go over and over doing this.

    A long time ago made a true Image backup of it. Because it had some virus's. Back then did the Alt + F10 and it worked.

    After testing this a lot found out something is wrong with the mother board. Testing a new install of Windows it would error on formating. Putting a restored True Image in would not work.

    Had a Elitegroup 741GX-M with a Sempron AMD 2200+ cpu and put it in the system. It booted windows but still had the virus's

    Rebooted to do the Alt + F10 but it would not work. Booting in Windows it wanted a Product key but the on on the side of the case did not work and a key find program did not get the same Product key on the side of the case and that one did not work ether. Said to contacted Microsoft and had to call and talked to a computer. Give it a big long number and it asked if changed the mother board and if old was defective. Said yes. That worked so it then booted in Windows. In windows it has a restore icon and ran that. When it rebooted it said something like "only for a Acer system" in red flashing text. Could not get out of that. So no way to restore it.

    But with True Image just restored the MBR and that fixed it so it booted. Hooked the hard drive up to another system and run a virus check on it. It deleted about 15 of them. Quarantined 4. Booted it up and it's working good now.

    All ready wanted to install a new windows in it using the a OEM Windows XP pro like it says it came with but the key on the side don't work or getting the key with a key scan that key don't work. I guess it's now s OEM Windows XP pro but something like a Acer OEM windows XP Pro.

    That's to bed they did not send the Windows XP pro install CD with the mother board drivers CD too. But the mother board is bad now any way.

    I would still like to get a windows CD. Have the Product key on the side of the case and some other Product key doing a read of it in Windows.

    On the 80GB hard drive it's using 1/2 of it one is 35.71GB named ACER (C :), one is 35.88 GB named ACERDATA (D :) the MBR and Track 0, PQSERVICE 2.934 GB looks like all old FAT32 types.

    I guess there is no way just to save out the Windows XP pro CD from the hard drive ha?

    I removed the hidden portition but i am unable to merge it with my main partition. I tried using the Windows utility but the expend option is not available
    One thing i noticed is that windows says that the partition isnt active. if i active it my computer will not be able to boot

    I have had a rather high failure rate by following this method:

    mbrwrwin install rtmbr.bin
    I did copy the rtmbr.bin from either the recovery CD's or recovery partition.

    Now when I did initialize the recovery process via ALT-F10, I get an error. Something about destination drive. It's hard to see because the text blends with the background. Basically its one of those Abort, Retry, Fail. "DOS" prompts that some of us rarely see.

    However if I press F for fail it starts recovery.

    When its done the laptop restarts, however it is supposed to go back into recovery and copy files. 0% to 100% and then restart. But this time it just goes into recovery again and asks me if I want to restore.

    I cancel and go into Windows, set it up, restart then when I get into Windows it does not install the Acer programs such as ePowerManagement, Launch Manager, etc, nor does it set the screen resolution.

    All of this because of using the

    mbrwrwin install rtmbr.bin
    method.

    In case that was too long and confusion to read, here's a summary:

    Original Recovery process
    1) ALT-F10
    2) Enter Password
    3) Restore
    4) Restart
    5) Go back into Recovery Mode

    9) Restart
    10) Go into Windows, install Acer programs

    1) ALT-F10

    3) Destination drive error prompt
    4) Restore
    5) Restart
    5) Go back into Recovery Mode
    6) Ask to recover again, does not copy files
    7) Restart
    8) Go into Windows, set Accounts, time zone, etc
    9) Restart
    10) Go into Windows, does NOT install Acer programs

    If you have blown out the service partition like me, installing the MBR is not going to help. The MBR is sitting on the first track of the disk and has a size of 512 bytes. The MBR bootstraps other files from the service partition. My question is how to restore files on the service partition?

    do you or did you set a password if not the default is six(6) zeros(0)
    i could not get D2D to work after the vista upgrade but when i used the bootable DVD that i was asked to burn when i first switched on my aspire which had xp media centre installed it rolled back to xp(thank god for that) :)

    hi all,

    i removed ubuntu 6.10 from my acer 2300, & damaged the mbr in the process - lost Alt + F10 & recovery cd's won't work. I can still boot to win xp, have a working system, but would wish to restore the alt+ f10 function if poss. I have paragon hard disk manager 8 and can view the files in the hidden restore partition. Have tried typing mbrwrwin install rtmbr.bin from the command prompt in windows but had no luck.. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    The reason why it doesn't work is because the 2 files mbrwrwin and rtmbr.bin have to be on the "c" partition and not just in the hidden recovery partition. If windows on your 2300 isn't installed on the C partition(with the these 2 files on that partition as well) or you don't have a C partition then this technique will not work.

    You will need to find a program that allows you to copy (don't cut) these 2 files onto the c partition from the hidden one.

    hi,(response to poinst made by evolution in post above)

    using paragon hard disk manager 8, I exported two files: instmbr.exe and rtmbr.bin from the hidden partition,I exported/guess means copied them to c:\Documents and Settings\Steve in the command prompt accessed via windows xp desktop.

    I rebooted the pc twice after typing the files in the com prompt and still no sign of alt f10 working. I have d2d enabled in the bios.

    I can view all the files in the restore partition with paragon 8;I appreciate this is a long ol thread but would be grateful for any advice.

    You said the 2 files you copied are "instmbr.exe and rtmbr.bin". Well the rtmbr.bin is one of the correct files but the other file should be called mbrwrwin.exe not instmbr.exe. Now I am just going on what you typed here. Perhaps acer used a different file name in earlier notebooks like the travelmate 2300 that you have.

    I know the mbrwrwin install rtmbr.bin process works but I am unsure why it isn't working on your notebook.

    If it were my notebook I would start experimenting but I am not going to tell you to do that as I don't want to be blamed if something were to go wrong :eek: ...

    I can't see mbrwrwin in the tools folder or elsewhere as yet. I copied instmbr & rtmbr.bin to c\documents settings\steve, then typed instmbr rtmbr.bin in command prompt.I think the files were in tools,in the hidden partition,

    Result from typing the two file names was a dozen or so options appearing in the command shell pane. Will check thread again tomorrow sometime, thanks for your help Evolution

    I can't locate the file mbrwrwin but in the tools folder have files mbrwrdos.exe and rtmbrnb.bin. I copied both to C:\Documents and Settings\ Steve. ' typed the two files in the command shell with and without install typed in between the two files and get a message about finding free space but no joy in getting Alt F10 working s any suggestions from other forumites would be welcome, thanks

    Hi everyone ...i have had all the same problems you guys/girls have had.
    So, I registerd on here to tell you how i did it,and i am very dim when it comes to laptops and stuff..OK....

    The First thing i did was... Right click (My Computer) and select (Manage)
    In Manage scroll down to (Disk Management)
    If you see a hidden Partion called PQSERVICE with no Drive letter then you have the Erecovery Files.......

    First.... Dowload a programe called PTEDIT.

    Second.. Launch PTEDIT in Win XP. pqservice is set as type 12, change it to type 07, and save,and Reboot, and it will be asign a drive letter when you log back in and the hidden partion is no longer hidden,you will now be able to carry out the next step

    Third.. Useing search Look for (mbrwrwin) and (rtmbr) both of these will show up as being in the hidden partion (which now has a drive letter) in the search result..

    Fourth... Copy both (mbrwrwin) (rtmbr.bin) to your main C:

    Fith... Go to Start > Run > Type CMD and this will open your CMD Promt
    In CMD Promt type the word cd\
    This will then give you the start line of C:
    In this area type the exact line..... mbrwrwin install rtmbr.bin
    It should say it loaded somthing,

    Sixth Reboot your computer and press ALT F10 after the post screen and your on your way to putting your laptop to Factory Settings

    I did all this very easy and very quick in XP with no other use than PTEDIT
    and no use of a recovery dvd as i forgot to make one

    i REALLY hope this help you guys/girls coz it had me baffled for days trying to fix it.

    due to a total mess up, i (think) formated/deleted the hidden partition. After that i reinstalled from recovery cd, but the problem is that each time i have to press ALT+F10 so i can get into windows, otherwise it will say NTDLR missing.

    I've followed your advice, I have the hidden partition now recognised as drive F.
    I don't have the file mbrwrwin in the pqservice partiion, I have rtmbr.bin, instmbr, mbrwrdos and rtmbrnb.bin !! I have tried different combinations of these with the install in between for example: mbrwrdos install rtmbr.bin. Most combo's mostly bring up "searching for free disk space" after hitting return key-this message goes on forever so am getting no further to restoring the alt + F10 function. I can see all files on the hidden partion with paragon hd manager 8, may be other files could do the trick. ANy suggestions would be appreciated, thanks, Steve

    BTW , my laptop is the Aspire 9300 ,if that helps

    i will try and zip up (mbrwrwin) (rtmbr.bin) and host it somewhere

    not sure if hosting the files is a good idea?copyright etc

    in tools folder in PQservice I have the file 'version' readme txt that shows the following files used below:there's no mention of mbrwrwin,. I would guess that Acer modify their recovery process with new ranges of laptops.

    MBRWRDOS.EXE
    RTMBR.BIN
    SetPwd.EXE
    MD2D.GHO

    I originally caused the fault by deleting ubuntu 6.10 operating sys via a utilities disk bought on ebay a few years back; this was a shortcut route due to laziness of reorganising the default linux/xp os boot choice menu at startup. I realise that the linux bootloader 'grub' gets installled in the acer mbr and cancause problems, I've read that it's recommended to install grub in a linux partition if installing linux?!

    if i host these 2 files for another fellow acer user can someone please state or show me its a piracy offence, and i wont do it.

    i will check back tomorrow to see if anyone can fill in the blanks on the hosting of the files

    Make sure you search for rtmbr.bin. I didn't find it when I just searched for rtmbr, and not rtmbr.bin. Windows bug i guess

    I'm reading this think what total BS it all is. Why do we have to do this? So just what happens of the drive dies and we simply want to replace it and install the VISTA and drivers? Got a great deal on the computer, but this isn't worth the hassle. You can't just do a complete drive copy?

    I have a problem that the partitions on the hard drive are screwed so I can't access windows or use alt f10. Really I need the recovery disks but as some one said earlier Acer Europe charge £50!!!!

    Any chance some1 in UK could run me a copy of these? Obviously I would pay a few pounds for the cd's and effort?

    I can't remeber exact model but its a travelmate, I guess the recovery disks are pretty much all the same?

    Hi there everybody!

    I own an Acer TravelMate 3012WTMi, and i got your same problem: my sysadmin installed on my own NB a Fedora Core 5 some time ago. Now i need to come back to factory settings, but my PQSERVICE partition is hidden. With Gparted in Linux i was able to unhide it, and using a simple "sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/hiddenpartition/" i got every single file it actually contains. So i burn a CD with d2d/stcdboot.iso and a DVD containing all the files and directory structure in the hidden partition. Now i have two possible chioces:
    1. i've modified the grub.conf file, so now i can "triple boot" (fedora, win xp, and recovery win xp - that starts just Acer Recovery);
    2. using the cd, i can access Acer Recovery tool.

    Unluckily, both possibilities FAIL! :confused:
    1. Booting in the PQSERVICE partition, gives me a problem: it seems Acer Recovery tool is looking for a DVD media, that isn't the one i burn before!
    2. Booting with the CD containing Acer Recovery tool, pc says "device does not exist" followed by "Cannot find file c:\preload.tag" and "Cannot find file x:\preload.tag".

    Actually i'm a little bit confused! What should i do? Reinstall a new WinXP cleaning all the partition but the PQSERVICE and then trying the mbrwrwin.exe way? In this case, should i create a second d: partition? Or maybe i should try to made the DVD boot-enabled? In this case, i don't know which file is the correct one to make it bootable: maybe Winnt.sif? Or an Autorun.exe contained in the Autorun directory?

    HI Guys!

    I dont know much about this partition thing, but what i do know is that we have an image on the laptop which we are required to burn an image of so that we can use it to recover by pressing alt+f10 or something.

    Well anyways what happened with me is that i reinstalled without saving a copy of the image. Now i dont have it! I really need it as acer is charging me 60 bucks to have it installed. Any help would be greatful. I will pay if you want.

    ok Ahora si ya entrados en materia les explico

    las computadoras acer laptop (no se las pc )traen en la bios setup o como le conozcan una opcion que dice d2d recovery si mal no recuerdo en la segunda pestaña
    que nos sirve para que si el sistema por x razon ya no funciona, presionando alt + f10 empieza una opcion de recuperacion de nuestro querido windows o lo que traiga con todo y controladores

    pero la pregunta de todos los foros y del millon de dolares


    que hacer cuando esta maldita opcion no funciona

    primero espero no confundirlos y ser claro

    cual puede ser el caso

    primero todos pero todos los usuarios no tenemos la precaucion de hacer nuestros dvd de recuperacion o nuestros cd (como fue en mi caso) y tuvimos algun problema

    Segundo caso traia nuestro laptop con 512 de ram el horrible windows vista, asi que nos decidimos a borrarlo e instalar xp u otra cosa

    asi que cuando instalamos borramos particiones ojo cuando instalamos windows o lo que sea tocamos no intencionalmente el mbr que traducido al español es sector de arranque de nuestro disco duro eeee ahi el problema por eso no funciona el alt + f10 ya que esa opcion se guardaba ahi en el famoso mbr

    hasta este punto vamos bien pero suponiendo que mi laptop trae vista y yo quiero instalar xp , pero yo no quiero perder la opcion de volver a windos vista o el sistema que originalmente traiga de fabrica , por favor no borren la particion que dice pqservice usen las otras dos
    de preferencia nada mas c:
    no ahi necesidad de unir (merge) c y d mas si lo quieren hacer bueno solo no toquen pqservice

    ahora y si estan leyendo este post es por que como dicen en mi pais "ya la cagaron"

    primer paso no necesitan linux, mandriva, ubuntu ni nada que no conozcan ni tampoco el famosisisisimo ParTEDIT32.ZIP que anuncian por ahi con mucho fervor y que ahi que modificar 07 por 12 y cosas asi
    lo que necesitan es partition magic yo creo que la mayoria lo conocemos si no abran el ares denle buscar y ahi sale de preferencia usen el 8 o superior


    ok ya bajaron partition magic lo abrimos va a salir tres particiones pqservice
    c: y d:
    no se preocupen si no les sale d: ya que si no les sale fue por que la borraron ustedes mismos

    en donde dice pqservice le damos boton derecho explorar y si viene en ingles browse

    y magia aparece algo asi ://disk1/partition1
    y abajo nos muestra archivos
    en esa misma ventana buscamos dos archivos

    usualmente se llaman
    mbrwrdos.exe y rtmbr.bin
    ojo no se traumen si no sale asi
    se puede llamar
    mbrwrwin.exe pero el que no cambia de nombre es rtmbr.bin

    asi que buscan esos dos sea cual sea el que les aparesca y le dan copiar estando dentro de la pantalla browse (explorar del partition) ahi mismo en la flecha seleccionan el disco c:\ y cuando esten en el le dan pegar

    (nota: no traten de darle copiar dentro de la ventana del partition e ir a mi pc y tratar de pegar por que no funcionara solo desde el partition)

    y magia ya tenemos nuestros dos archivos en c:

    eso es todo con el partition lo cerramos

    ahora apagamos nuestra pc
    y cuando este saliendo el logo de acer cuando prende abajo dice

    f2 for entering setup
    presionamos f2
    y entramos a la bios
    no recuerdo exactamente donde pero muevanse con las flechas a los lados por el bios y lean y donde diga d2d recovery a un lado debe decir enabled o disabled , ese tenemos que ponerlo en disabled si no saben como con f5 y f6 se cambian las opciones ahi le pican hasta que este en disabled

    nota: si no hacen este proceso si se lo brincan no van a poder por nada del mundo ya que esta utileria desde el bios bloquea la escritura del mbr para agregar lo del alt +f10


    ya estando en eso nos desplazamos hasta donde dice exit y damos en exit an saving

    para los que no saben que significa es salir y guardar

    ok entramos a windows
    ahora en inicio ejecutar escribimos cmd y damos en aceptar
    para los que son mas listos pues entren a ms dos
    en windows vista no trae opcion de ejecutar
    pero trae el cuadro de busqueda escriban cmd y le dan click

    ya en ms dos

    teclen
    cd..
    cd..
    cd..
    varias veces hasta que queden en c:

    hojo por que les digo esto
    cuando entran a ms dos usualmente dice

    c:\documment and settings\usuario\mis documentos
    el cd.. hace que bajen un nivel
    usen los que sean necesarios para llegar a c:\
    para los que son mas listos solo den cd\ ojo es barra invertida sale con alt + 92
    y ya quedan en c:

    ya estando ahi
    recordemos que ya copiamos dos archivos

    mbrwrdos.exe
    rtmbr.bin

    o en su defecto

    mbrwrwin.exe
    rtmbr.bin

    muchos se me trauman en este paso por que dicen o no yo no tengo el mbrwrdos.exe
    tengo mbrwrwin.exe ojo es lo mismo pero con nombre diferente

    asi que por ahi rola un comandito que es

    mbrwrdos.exe install rtmbr.bin
    o
    mbrwrwin.exe install rtmbr.bin

    pero como a toda la gente le gusta complinarnos la vida
    no nos dicen que el programa al hacer eso remplaza el mbr con la copia que da acer para que funcione el alt + f10
    pero no nos dicen que el programa busca en el sector de arranque un lugarcito para hacer una copia de seguridad del maldito mbr defectuoso y marca un maldito error que dice
    searchin 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19.....
    no found space
    chingue a su mad......... ahi todo el mundo se priva hasta yo para no mentirles
    casi me daban ganas de llorar es mas tube que ir al baño por que me dio diarrea

    pero despues de regresar del baño
    y como estoy educado a la vieja escuela de ms dos

    mbrwrwin.exe /?
    uuuuuuuuuuuu y salen montones de comandos
    ojo no les muevan mas abajo se los explico si tocan los de arriba adios tabla de particiones y ya no pueden ver nada y si meten su disco duro a otra pf dice formato defectuoso no se apuren eso se puede reparar con un programa llamado testdisk-6.8.win pero eso de esa utileria avanzada de recuperacion de discos dañados es otro boleto asi que no le muevan a nada

    y me topo con una pequeña variante

    mbrwrwin.exe install overwrite rtmbr.bin
    o en su defecto
    mbrwrdos.exe install overwrite rtmbr.bin
    y asi que el pequeño overwrite lo que hace es que tecnicamente le vale mad... y no hace backup del mbr defectuoso que tenemos y solo remplaza el mbr por el de acer y que creen listo tenemos mbr nuevo de acer

    les va a marcar algo asi como 1,2,3,4,5,6..........
    mbr ok..
    ya es todo lo que a manipulacion de archivos se refiere

    se salen de ms dos con exit
    apagan su windows

    prenden la laptop
    entran a la bios
    donde mismo que desactivaron el d2d recovery entran y ahora le dan en enabled ya saben con f5 f6 le dan a exit save and exit


    cuando salgan de la bios cuando esta el logo de acer ahora si presionan alt + f10 y vuala empieza la restauracion de nuestro sisitema y se acaba el calvario


    ahora para los que son mas inquietos y les encata meterle mano a todo entren a mi pague

    ahi les pondre una copia del mbrwrwin.exe y rtmbr.bin esta es de una acer aspire 3690 la verdad no se si funcione en otro modelos yo creo que si ya que es el boot para xp todo lo que sea xp yo creo que funciona pero si se les hace mucho problema pues sigan el proceso y les explico como con el mismo mbrwrwin.exe pueden montar la particion oculta pqservice para no tener que usar partition magic

    el comando es mbrwrwin.exe hd0:1 k:

    y con eso monta la pqservice en la letra k:

    con esto ahi viene una carpeta que se llama d2d y dentro patch y ahi vienen todos los drivers de la laptop digo por si alguien quiere curiosear

    y ya de ahi sacan su mbrwrwin.exe y su rtmbr.bin por si el que tengo en mi pagina no funciona para su laptop o ya sea que ustedes traigan vista ok

    ahora para la gente que esto le sirva hagan un donativo no se crean es mas si se crean

    ahora lo que si se es que si tenemos laptops de la misma serie digamos yo tenia una 3690-2612 y otra que es 3690 que de echo traia linux boot de fabrica osea no traia windows pero esta mas barata si nos funcionan los discos de restauracion dentro de la misma serie que seria 3690 pero si lo intentamos en una 3680 ya no funciona, espero que el mio haya sido caso aislado pero lo intentamos en 6 laptop diferentes

    can anybody make a Backup of the MBR and Track 1 with mbrwrwin
    and sent it to me, please?

    The commands are:
    mbrwrwin backup mbr
    mbrwrwin backuptrack Track

    I made a Image of all Partitions with TrueImage but the ALT-F10 will not work.
    The default mbr on the PQService Parition rtmbr.bin does not contain partition information.

    Is it possible to make that kind of backup if the PQService is hidden?
    I had it unhidden for a short while but now it's hidden again.

    But I don't mind about that any more.
    This is important and makes me glad:
    After a week or two of headache and despair I managed to get eRecovery by PQSERVICE partition to work again! (sorry for my quite bad english). The situation was so bad - after windows vista/Windows XP dual boot "adventures" - that I was very close to deleting the f****** PQSERVICE partition!

    Then I decided to try once more to fix the "hidden partition problem".
    First I made a backup image of Windows vista to partition D: with eRecovery. (it worked fine when started from desktop).
    Then I started a clean Windows XP istallation on C: drive (quick format first). When winxp setup was ready I used ptedit32 to unhide pqService. (type 12 to 0C). Then reboot and was I glad to see that there was an unhidden partition F in My computer-window, so nice and fresh - open for everybody to explore.

    Next I looked into boot.ini file of pqservice partition. I changed timeout to 10, partition number to 1 and removed one line below the main line. (I really don't remember exactly, I've lost the xxxx.txt file where all was written up)

    Because the "bootmgr missing" message had also been giving me headache all the time (earlier, when alt+F10 worked sometimes) I rebooted computer with win xp installation cd again and went to recovery console (press R). There I chosed 1 (C:\Windows) when asked "which windows installation you want to log in" (or something like that). No password needed so just >enter<.
    Then diskpart to see the disk letter of unhidden pqservice. This time it was D.
    So, esc and then i typed D:
    At D:\prompt i wrote Fixmbr and then Y. Exit and reboot to windows xp.
    The pqservice had remained unhidden (i was very glad to se that).
    And then the last operation:
    I copyed MBRWRWIN.exe and RTMBR.bin to root of drive C, then Start->Run->cmd.
    At command line i wrote cd\.
    At C:>\ i wrote MBRWRWIN.exe install RTMBR.BIN.

    Then reboot and oh how glad is was to see Alt+F10 work fine and the eRecovery environment appear on the screen!
    After cancelling the recovery and rebooting to win xp I saw that PQservice was hidden again! (Since then i haven't got it back . I have tried meny types. OC, 07, 27 etc.)
    Finally I started windows Vista recovery with the ALT+F10 key combination and everything went fine. Now i'm back where I started my life with acer aspire 9302, before the horrible dual boot nightmares where everything went wrong from the beginning.

    I've read through the threads and hope you can help. I have an Acer 5920G laptop. My issue is am trying to upgrade my HD (go from the factory 150 GB to a 250 GB) but keep running into the same issues I see on this thread (system won't boot). I thought I could simply format my new HD and use Norton Ghost to restore my previous C: drive image. Silly me for thinking it would be that simple.
    Bottom line. What are the specific steps I need to do to make my new, higher capacity HD usable. Do I have to create the PQSservice partition in the new HD also???
    If so what tools do I need? I was using the built in Window Vista tools and Norton Ghost.

    Help is appreciated because I have been racking my brains for the past week reformating and restoring this HD. My original disk is intact so am able to pull any required tools/data from it.

    Which version of norton ghost are you using?
    Did you make any partitions on the new hard disk before you "dropped" the C: drive image?

    Best way would be to use "copy disk" with ghost -- that way everything would be preserved.

    Iirc there should be an option when making disk image, ie. to include boot info. And make sure you include all partitions in image, including hidden one.

    I am using Nortong Ghost 12.
    I did multiple configurations of the new harddrive. ONe partition (c drive only), two partition (boot drive and data drive). They all fail.
    This leads me to believe the hidden pqservice partition is essential to recreate in the upgrade process??? If so, what procedures do need to follow?

    Hmnnn...I wonder...are you sure you marked "restore mbr" and "restore original disk signatre" etc, when using norton ghost recovery cd?
    I think sponka's suggestion is very good.

    Did Norton ghost change their features in 12?
    When I try to "copy drive" option, it only lets me select one partition on the disk. Am unable to copy all the parititions.
    ...curious.

    I checked excelent Radified ghost guide ( http://ghost.radified.com/) and it seems we're talking about 2 different things:

    - ghosting inside windows/vista environment (I don't know much about)
    - gosting/cloning old hard drive to another (thats what I'm familiar with)

    So, as for ghost 12 and Vista, I can't say much about.
    As for cloning, here's my suggestions:

    Read this guides (they are for older versions than v12, but I'm sure you'll digg smth usefull ;) ):
    Pre-imaging info for Norton Ghost; scroll down to "Norton Ghost Boot Floppy"
    Cloning Drives with Norton Ghost (2003) and forum thread about cloning with ghost 9 ( http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1117581957)

    In short, make bootable CD with ghost, connect both drives and boot from CD. It should boot into environment like on this screenshot:

    Since I've got on hold of this acer 5584wxmi I've never realized that there is a function of alt+f10.

    so when I tried to have a clean install on the C; partition, I thought since I have the product key of vista home premium- i could just go to the streets and spend few bucks on a pirtaed vista DVD and choose the home premium edition, by keying in the product key

    but it turns out that this illegal dvd installed vista ultimate without giving me a chance of entering the product key.. by now I felt guilty and wanted to restore back the good ol' home premium and tried the alt f10.. it doesnt work even with d2d enabled

    is there by any chance i've deleted the hidden partition during the clean install? and can I re-enable the alt f10 recovery function? if so, what if I wanted only clean install without those Acer softwares and how?

    any help will be greatly appreciated- thanks

    Boot with a bootable ubuntu 7.10 disc and see if it can see the hidden partition usually pqservice. If not partition has probably been deleted.

    I assume you didn't use erecovery to make back up discs?
