look at the bottom of your screen. is there a switch that is pressed/moved by a small piece of plastic.
run finger along the bottom of screen and see if there is a plastic piece sticking out..mine is on the right hand side next to the hinge.
just maybe the switch is sticking.
please it can't be that simple.
    (phil smacks head on wall)
    Phil :D

edit: just pushed switch with match and laptop screen goes off and if you hold switch down nothing seems to work. not even the power button and laptop stays in stand by

I'm not sure if it will cause a problem that you are having but check if you have "OSaFsLoc.sys". It's classified as IO driver and have been causing my acer to reboot when I type with my keyboard.

just tried it again and its like having a totally dead laptop.
i wonder how many laptops have this kind of switch.
and it does seem to collect dust and if you was to spill some thing sticky like coke on it, well it would make you think thats it chuck laptop in bin

man i can't believe we all overlooked that little button... the things we often take for granted... imagine what fun we could have with ACER tech support outta a button glued in permently....

That switch is to tell that laptop that you closed your lid (screen). If you set your windows option to turn off computer if lid is closed when you stick that match in, your computer will shut down.

Yes, Acer didn't put that switch at the place where the lid-hooks clamp on like a lot of other laptops.

don't talk stupid Kaze. I bet there's a few on here who never thought about that switch me included.
I only spotted it because my system tray was having a fit :D

How did you know it stopped working? Were you trying to type something while having that switch pressed?

i tried every setting i could find for when you shut the screen and with the settings set to do nothing and letting the laptop go in to standby after a few minuets. still with the same results.
laptop just seemed dead but with the battery light on.
that switch must have more connections than just the screen :D

PS. even the on/off failed the test.

i wouldn't post until i had done my tests. and my switch is visible, you can see the switch activating arm (small peice of white plastic on a black background

will post a macro pic when son gets back with camera

Oh, I didn't mean it that way. Was just curious on what you did. Wasn't questioning on if you tested it or not.

You don't need to go through the trouble of taking a picture of the switch. I know exactly what switch you are talking about.

i do apologise Hblade if that came across the wrong way.

but i didn't want to post unless i had tried it my self.
and found a few things out myself on this one.
that switch could answer a few problems for people on here before they dismantle there laptops.
like when you spill something on the laptop and that switch gets a drop and starts sticking

any way your post made me test it even more
