Does anyone know if these modified bios (specially the ones that awesome bob12x did) have some affect on Linux OS?
I don't know if it's related or just coincidence, but since then I cant boot any linux usb distro and all CD/DVD installations are having some difficulties in detecting CPU and Battery...

It is much easier if you find out what chipset your computer use & search which CPU is compatible with it (google :p ). You also need to know what type of CPU socket use by your computer, so that you don't buy wrong CPU.

Your notebook model is Acer Travelmate 5620. The BIOS version is similar with my Acer Aspire 9420. This thread confirmed that our BIOS is identical, which means you can use BIOS for Acer Aspire 9420 (Aspire 9424WSMi) to flash your BIOS on Acer Travelmate 5620. The readme in the v1.24 BIOS file downloaded from Acer website also confirmed this.
Please go to post #13 to download the modified BIOS for Acer Travelmate 5620.

I think you need to remove the HIMEM.SYS file from your DOS bootable disk.

Please wait. I will post here the tool I use to create the DOS bootable disk.

EDIT: Please use this tool to create the DOS bootable disk. Unplug any other disk except the one you want to use as DOS bootable disk:-

Any of these Bios mods possible?

    - Make the Chipset support a Dual Core CPU (my i940 won't support my Core Duo)

    - Change FSB, RAM, CPU clocks, and Graphics (950GMA) clocks?

    - Change RAM timings (idk much about this, only heard about this recently)

    - DSDT patches to temperature fan trips (like fan speed goes to "x" after sensor "x" goes to "x" degrees)

    - Updated Phoenix Bios core? (I am a BIOS noob yes, but wouldn't this be possible? To use a more updated core? Like I heard of newer phoenix bios's having the ability to boot from cold to the OS start screen instantaneously)

    - Faster BIOS boot time in general? (I know it's fast already, but those little things to improve performance are nice)

For modders if you update VGA BIOS, make sure the Device ID and Subsys remains the same, otherwise there will be identification issues.

    Not possible.
Possible but this depend on available resources for example the BIOS itself (either such capability is available or not). This kind of mod can cause the computer "unbootable". There is a lot of software-based solution that can do the same thing.
This depend on the memory module capability & BIOS itself.
This require in-depth knowledge of DSDT. Part of the ACPI table.
    Not possible.
When computer start, BIOS will run routine check which also known as Power-on self-test (POST). The routine check is important & I don't think it is a wise thing to temper it.

    @weinter & @koshari
Actually I didn't update or modify the nvidia firmware. In the modified BIOS for Acer Aspire 9420 (also TravelMate 5620), it have modified DSDT. The modified DSDT also compatible with Windows. In the graphic card section, I did inject Apple subvendor-id. You can confirm it by running GPU-Z. It just cosmetic doesn't change the graphic card normal operation. This is the reason why you need to re-install the graphic card driver. I use driver downloaded from NVIDIA & Laptop News | Latest NVIDIA drivers and related news | laptopvideo2go.com (version 180.70).

Is this Aspire or TravelMate? You need to find the crisis recovery disk for your notebook.

EDIT: There is service manual for Acer Aspire 7730/7730G. It explains step-by-step BIOS recovery. Download the pdf file.

EDIT: Download the " Another CRISIS Disk" package from the first post. Follow the " This is another step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for me" instruction.

If it's of any use, when I would mess with VBIOS updates on my laptop, I would sometimes have to use my crysis recovery disc (an actual CD) but Instead of doing the special button combo, I just took out my HDD, defaulted my BIOS settings (just to get the boot order back to normal, if your CD is first though, you don't have to take out the HDD), and put the disc in and it did the rest.

I doubt this would work on a full BIOS brick though? My VBIOS was the only thing messed up so technically, my system would boot up normally, just no screen.

When BIOS become corrupted (because of failed BIOS flash), the computer still can be turned ON but display always blank. To recover the corrupted BIOS, we will be use CRISIS recovery disk. There is an emergency feature in the BIOS called the boot-block. The recovery disk media can be a CD or pen drive/flash drive or floppy disk. This has been works with a lot of computer. I have experience bricking my Dell Studio & Acer Aspire 9420. All the time I was able to recover it using CRISIS recovery disk.

I can post here a lot of link about BIOS recovery to clear your doubt but I won't. Google them to find out more. :)

Acer Aspire 7730g - it flashed the new bios, 32/32 blocks with verify but was unable to reboot for a few minutes. I did a manual reboot via power button. It entered in that recovery mode with blinking start button. I did the recovery usb on another computer and booted from if, flashed but with no succes. I had to bring it to a computer service, that took the bios chip from my mb and rewrote it. The bios chip itself was ok, so it was... software based error.

May I know how you flash the BIOS chip when it happen? Are you using DOS, Winphlash32 or Winphlash64 package? Did you get any confirmation the BIOS flash is succeed or not? Does the technician recover your BIOS chip with the modified BIOS image?

You're the 2nd person with Aspire 7730G report to me about the same problem but in his case it happen when the BIOS flash was half way & screen suddenly blank. There are two version of modified BIOS image for Aspire 7730G which are the first "Unlock VT Menu only" & the second one is "Unlock VT & Speedstep Menu". The modified BIOS for 7730G in this thread is the 2nd version. The modified BIOS is properly build. However, I have disabled the download link for Aspire 7730G for now. Also for unknown reason, CRISIS recovery not working with this model (I haven't found any success report yet). As you described, it did enter recovery mode but it failed to recover the corrupted BIOS.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you were able to recover it. :)

I used Winphlash64, but no, there was no confirmation of succes, except that it displayed that it flashed all blocks. after that it freezed. The tehnician used the original 3636 bios from the acer website.

Request mod of Extensa 5630G Bios v1.36:

    Located here: http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...=Extensa 5630G&OS=V10&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_9

    - unhide Intel Menu
    - unhide Intel Virtualization Menu
    - unhide SATA AHCI menu
    - unhide Speedstep menu
    - unhide any harmless, advanced menu
    - patch DSDT table

I am currently running the original C2D T5800 (2,0GHz, 2MB, 800MHz) with voltmod to 0,1v lower at SLFM, but I had a P8600 1066 running just fine. I have bought a Q9100 (Quadcore, 2,26GHz, 12MB) to try. If bios is not capable, could it be modified to support it?

    Thanks in advance!

BTW: I'm a silent reader at the forum, followed a lot of guides and threads here - what an excellent place! Please say if I can contribute with anything worthwhile :)

I would say it will require a Microcode update.
Microcode update are highly dangerous I bonked my computer because of it.
I also don't recommend doing cpu microcode updates.

For the CPU support, I will not be able to do it as I don't have enough hardware to test it. As weinter mention earlier, it also dangerous. I hope you can run Q9100 without any problem.

I can see SATA AHCI menu in the BIOS editor. Are you saying SATA AHCI menu is not visible in BIOS menu? Perhaps AHCI mode is not supported by your hardware, that is why it is not visible.

Virtualization is enabled by default but VT menu is hidden. I will modify the BIOS image to unhidden the VT menu. Remember that some menu (after modification) will not appear if your hardware is not support it. For example, once you upgrade your CPU with VT capable CPU, the virtualization menu will appear in BIOS menu.

I will post here the modified BIOS image when it ready.

I looked at the bios myself, seeing there seems to be a complete intel menu? The reason I want it unhidden, is because maybe I will be able to select cores (deactivate/activate) in there - could especially be useful with the new Q9100 when it arrives.

Oh and isnt it already SLIC 2.1 compatible? I mean, I got the original Acer W7 upgrade dvd? If it isnt, I would like that as well ;)

I ask much, I feel bad. Maybe I can compensate by trying out specific stuff for you on my 5630G with mxm 2 hd3650 512MB DDR2? (I've edited the bios clocks and voltage on the graphics to save power at battery and to overclock to 800 core 700 mem at 3D).

I also have an Aspire One aoa150, which I have modded with bluetooth, hardware pll mod to overclock to 1,8GHz, 10400mAh battery etc...

    Just let me know :)

Hehe, I'm not even sure of what you're asking me :p You want me to reverse-engineer the file and look for the code to enable/disable it, or? I would have to start from scratch, learning the binary calls and stuff... I know some basic DOS stuff etc., but thats about it. Otherwise I have used tools created by others to modify things ;)

    - Heck, I'm an oldie, 36 years :p

EDIT: I'm glad you're doing this mod for me :)

I was using DOS USB disk. I tried the crisis methods described here, but none seem to work :(

Its like: No battery, no power cord. i press fn+esc, plug in the power, press power, usb drive blinks once, pause, then once again, then nothing other than fan is running.

    - I try to recover with the original 1.36, of course :)

Wow...flash failed in DOS? I have disabled the download link for now. The BIOS image was properly built though. If you don't mind, of course after recovery successful, please tell me how you flash it.

You have to let it run for a couple of minutes. Follow the (2nd) instruction at the bottom of post #1.
    - Just to be sure, place the HMA136.WPH file in the CRISIS recovery disk. Also place BIOS.WPH file (identical with HMA136.WPH) in the same CRISIS recovery disk.
    - Let the process run a couple of minutes (10 minute to be sure).
    - If it doesn't works, replace the phlash16.exe in the CRISIS disk with the one from the original 1.36 package.
    - If it doesn't works, try latest version of phlash16.exe available in bob12x package.

Ok, tried all your steps, except the phlash16 from bob's 12x package, as I cant find it there?

Hmm however it does react somehow on fn+esc. If I try booting without, the flash drive remains off, but with fn+esc the light stays on?! Maybe its the usb drives fault?

You should see a compress file "Phlash16_v1.7.0.18.rar" in the package.

1)Check the autobat points to the BIOS.wph file & it should be called BIOS.WPH
2)Make sure you use a USB Floppy.
3)Press and hold to initiate boot block.

Is changing the voltage of a CPU possible from BIOS? or even a program?

Yes, it is possible. As I stated earlier, this require in-depth knowledge on DSDT, part of the ACPI table. If you're using windows, there are tools to control voltage to the CPU & it is much easier than changing it in DSDT. With linux, advanced user can override DSDT in BIOS with the modified one without the need to flash BIOS chip. Mac OS X with 3rd party bootloader also can achieve the same thing.

Deja Vu?? I think I already explain this.

Still no life in the Extensa. It does however seem to react some on Fn+ESC - the USB drive light stays on when doing it.

I will try a bootable cd now.
