    Run it as root.

If it still doesn't work, try a different live CD (one that doesn't have the "Filter access to /dev/mem" kernel option set), OR install a real Linux distro (not necessary a full desktop Linux, just enough to allow you to run custom kernels) and rebuild the kernel with that option disabled. (I know, jumping straight from the Windows world to compiling Linux kernels is a bit steep, but I'm pretty sure there is someone on the Web who can help you with it.)

EDIT: OpenSUSE 11.1 live CD should work (but not 11.2 or later, as those disable /dev/mem access).

i did this yesterday for my 6920g.
flash worked ok and all is running again with some new menus on startup.
i was hoping this would enable the option for Virtualization Technology (VT) but couldnt see it any where. is that something different?
also i was half expecting it to help unlock my 9600m gs card which i have never been able to overclock, but that also didnt seem to make any difference.
is there anything on the new menus that is worth changing?
what it did do, however, was to break the activation on my windows 7 64 :(
is that because the 6920g file says "6920G (with unlocked menus, no SLIC2.1)"?
got a bit late last night so will have to activate windows sometime soon. unless you have another solution?

The 6920G BIOS I posted contains and old Vista-only SLIC (the one the 6920G originally came with). It is forbidden on this forum to post BIOSes specifically patched for SLIC2.1 - even I am stretching the rules quite a bit by using previously-patched BIOSes as my base, some of which contain SLIC patches.

(In fact, I initially expected that mods will ask me to take down the SLIC-modded BIOSes, and replace them with SLIC-less ones. So far, this has not happened - but I'm not willing to violate the rules by intentionally SLIC-patching a BIOS.)

However, you may try using the BIOS for the 8920G, which is SLIC-patched; though it will probably make your computer report itself to Windows as a 8920G. (The 8920G is basically a 6920G in a bigger chassis, but the model identifiers are hardcoded in the BIOS image for the Phoenix BIOS used in the 6/8920G, unlike the 5720G/7720G's InsydeH2O EFI, where model identifiers are stored in the NVRAM, unaffected by BIOS flashing.)

BTW, VT should be enabled by default with this BIOS - if it is still disabled, your CPU probably doesn't support it.

I'm lost. I read SLIC was associated with activation, after reading Triturbo's post on 11th May, and your reply. If I flash an 8920 will activation function ok. I don't mind if I have to re-activate, as long as it works.

Does that mean your 8920 BIOS will work fine with Vista activation and Win 7 activation. I understood/thought that was what you meant when you said the SLIC2.1 was backwards compatible. Is the 8920 now all compatible. Am sure it looks good (with unlocked menus & SLIC2.1), or am I completely lost.

    U6b36ef.

    @ everyone, Lizzardos, and Mookill,

Following on from what Lizzarddos and Mookill were saying about memory versions of the 9600M GT. Clearly DDR3 easily outperforms DDR2 for speed. However a long time ago, I read that GPU ram has more relevance in higher resolutions. With the 8920 at 1920x1080 I wondered if the 1GB DDR2 version might be better for an 8920. Anyway I found a bargain DDR3.

I believe the 8920 BIOS shall work in a 6920 (given the identical motherboards between the two), but it will likely make the 6920 identify itself as a 8920 and possibly operate with performance settings tuned for the cooling capabilities of the 8920.
However, you can probably transplant the SLIC from the 8920 BIOS into the 6920 one, if you are worried. Again, I'm not allowed to post the name of the program for SLIC-modding Phoenix BIOSes due to forum rules, but I'm sure you will find it with some Googulation.

I'm not sure if even discussing SLIC mods is allowed here, though.

    EDIT: Quote from forum rules:
I'm pretty sure this forbids even discussing SLIC modding.

BTW I highly disagree with the use of the wording "intellectual property" in the rules - doing so legitimizes the music industry's constant push for even stricter copyright laws, in the name of protecting private property. Copyright and related rights are protection of business interests, and not property rights, at least in most jurisdictions.

@.NetRolller 3D: of course you are correct, and i would not dream of asking for any sort of piracy on this forum.....
i was surprised that the SLIC was even mentioned. anyway, i was worried enough about trying the 6920 one, so will pass for now on the 8920 unless someone here has tried already.
if anyone here has a link for a tested usb boot flash that would be a big help.

you were also correct about the VT (see pic) :D , so may fire up a virtual machine again when i have some time. i thought it would be in the menus and didnt have time to test last night.

    @ gazzacbr, .NetRolller 3D

Look back at Lizzarddos posts. That was a successful 6920 SBIOS flash. Showed up in CPU-Z as a 6920.

    @ .NetRolller 3D

I was worried about what gazzacbr posted that it "broke the activation on Win 7". That's the nuts and bolts of what I posted last. I wouldn't want to discuss SLIC mods. Not me. Merci.
Mmm I did read of BIOS modding to make cracked Windows OS. Not for me though. I don't think anyone suspects you of tomfoolery.
I remember now though that Lizzarddos had a successful result, and your 8920 SBIOS MXM structure mirrors the 6920. All is good I think. These systems I am looking at all have their original Win Vista 32-bit OS's installed. From what I have read and understand your SBIOS's should be fine to move to Win 7.

i mulled over it for few days and couldnt bring myself to pay almost double the price. if you can get a DDR3 version for cheap, you should take that over DDR2 regardless of how much ram.

its all marketing these days - seen a few lappies with a nvidia 540M with 2GB ram - what a waste.

    @ Mookill,

Thanks for replying. Yeah, I kept thinking about it. Going back some time, I looked at GPU-z readings for memory usage with Crysis (demo). It only used about 310MB of GPU ram at its maximum. That was only in low to medium settings with an 8600M GT 512MB DDR2, on a screen resolution of 1200x800.

A 9600M GT in either DDR2 or DDR3 I'm sure is going to make a difference (in GPU ram usage). I think that the turning the setting up to high/very high is going to utilise more GPU ram. The DDR3 512MB, that's probably right on, for a 5920 running in 1200x800. (Or a 6920 with it's original 1366x768 resolution.) Maybe higher resolution screens need more GPU ram which I 'think' is still right. Moving to 8920 screen resolution of 1920x1080 I wondered if 512MB might then limit performance. 1GB DDR2 might be just as good 'in game' performance.
    I saw a 9600 DDR3 cheap so I bought it.

    @ .NetRolller 3D

9600M GT DDR3 arrived today. I'm nervous about trying the 5920 flash until I have Pheonix Crisis flash ready. (I'm going to dump the files onto a USB and see what happens at boot.) I fairly confident your SBIOS will work ok though. An 8920 flash is possible now; this 8920 is 80% rebuilt and operational. (Stuff to fix.)

    @ Dear Moderators,
Thankyou for deleting my part duplicated posting. Was an accident. I can't quite work out how I managed it, but thanks.

same here for DDR3, i think thats the big difference in the performance over the 9500 that is standard. even though the 9500 is 512MB and my 9600 is 'only' 256MB.
    (check my sig)
if there was a game (fps) that i really wanted to play in high res i would also be after a 9600GT. i assume that would be the fastest that we could get in our ageing lappies?
(seem to be some posts missing here, maybe just my imagination)

    Correction: a 9600M GT in either DDR2 or GDDR3.

Why? Because there are now MXM cards with actual PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM on the market (specifically, the Asus M90Gn GT240M and a few Toshiba HD4xxx cards, as well as some of the newer MXM-A/B ATIs). Since GDDR3 is actually a variant of DDR2, this "real" DDR3 is probably even faster than GDDR3.

    @ .NetRolller 3D

Yep correction. Thanks for the right info. (9600M GT has GDDR3, not DDR3).
How confident are you about the 5920 SBIOS flash? I'm mostly ready to give it a try.
(While I don't have a floppy at the moment I could most likely obtain one to use on USB.) You seemed 'mostly sure all OK' for a 5920 before. Have you had any further thoughts please.

    @ gazzacbr,
    - Yup, I barely thought. I imagine too there will be fewer games that might run in such a high res as 1920x1080.
    - According to TechPowerUp Acer has a VBIOS for the GT240M so they may exist in MXM II. (Likely rare I suspect.) Toshiba and Asus issue them.

    @ .NetRolller 3D,

I flashed the 5920. I've run 3D '06 twice and it's not fallen over yet. The original 8600M GT is still inside, and seems OK.

I'll try the 9500M GS soon, and the 9600M GT.

To be honest I'm wondering now if I did manage to put the correct modded version into the flash. I was careful, and sure I did. (I thought I might have just reflashed the Acer support website ver 1.3813 back in.) Only I half expected the SBIOS version to show as 1.3813_MXM, but it still displays as 1.3813.) I thought the 'boot' Acer flash screen looked different, but that was probably my imagination.

Do you have a method I can check to see if I used the modded version SBIOS? (Rather than putting another GPU in/ or re-flashing.)

Neither the SBIOS version, nor the boot screen have been changed; however, you should see extra tweaking options in the BIOS setup (assuming you haven't installed the modded BIOS from the Phoenix mod thread, which already has these options).

If you did indeed flash the right BIOS, then we now know that it does not cause brickings or regressions. Now the real question is, does it help the 9600M GT?

I'm sure I did the right flash, (from page one on this thread). I did look for extra's in the SBIOS, I thought there was some options, but only a few. I'll try the 9500 and the 9600 now-ish.

    @ .NetRolller 3D, '"UPDATE"'

The 9500M GS now works in the Acer 5920. Before modded SBIOS flash it refused to even post (just like you said the 9600M GT did in the 5920). I think it's safe to say your 5920 modded SBIOS works, and will with the 9600M GT.
    - Also I think there were a couple of extra options in the SBIOS under the 'MAIN' tab. I think there was keysound switch on/off, and other stuff that's new.

The 9600M GT I bought is faulty. It didn't work and it not the fault of the SBIOS. I only opened the package it arrived in, to do the test just now, and there was all sorts wrong with it. (Parts missing, no power, not a 9600.)

Now all we need is confirmation that my BIOS does indeed fix the 9600M GT issue too. So far, only 6920+9600M GT and 5920+9500M GS are confirmed.

Flashed this bios on a broken 5920g i recieved, i booted with my FX 3700M inside (ducktaped heatsink and at a strange angle.

.NetRolller 3D, you are the man!

edit: Tried my 9600M GS which did not work before the flash, booted fine!

Thanks for the success report! Still not exactly a 9600M GT, but we are getting close.

If you are brave enough, you may try flashing a 9600M GT VBIOS into your GS, just to be extra sure, but I take no responsibility for that. :) Not sure if that is even possible.

I have tried a 9600M GT DDR2 bios in the past, works fine.

I see no reason why a 9600M GT DDR3 would not work, 2 cards (9500/9600m gs) which did not even post work flawless after this mod.

Hell i even tried a mxm he card and it worked :D

acer aspire 5920g, and the bios works, it has another silent boot screen, my original was white with some green acer logo, this one has a black background instead, but i do not have a video card to test with ;)
so if anyone is in denmark and are ready to lent out their card ill try it out :)

If you do buy one, be sure to note which version (A1 or C1) and memory type (DDR2 or GDDR3 - AFA<!-- I hate the word filter -->IK no other types exist for the GeForce 9000 series) you get.

Weird, this BIOS seems to be calling the MXM interrupt correctly.
Also, just verified using Phoenix BIOS Editor, the BIOS @ http://ifile.it/hg96pvw/V116_SLIC_MXM.ROM does contain the right MXM structure.

Do you see amy boot output if you plug in an external display?
Also, does a non-9600M GT card boot fine on your system?

If you can, please also try a different VGA BIOS.

    @ .NetRolller 3D,

I have a another 9600M GT now. It is in the 5920, and boots fine.

However I don't know if it's working properly. The problem may be with the card. There are 4 performance levels of power/clock settings for the 9600M GT. Unfortunately it will only operate in the first lower two settings. It will not clock up to either of the higher settings.

I have tried 2 recent nvidia website drivers, and now have the Acer website driver installed. (I find the Acer website driver is a good fallback if there are problems, like flickering with other cards.) I got the LV2G drivers, though I never tried LV2G before, and I might not know how to use them. They didn't install, couldn't find compatible hardware.

Anyway there are lower voltages for this card compared to 8600M GT/9500M GS, and it runs cooler at the idle clocks. (Hooray.) The upper clock settings demand lower voltage than the 8600M GT/9500M GS. I doubt then very much the 9600M GT is suffering from not enough power to clock up. (More transistors though, and approx same power consumption I think.)

My only idea is that the previous cards fitted to the 5920 had three power/clock settings, and the 9600M GT has four. While this is a difference between the 8600 series cards and the 9600 series cards, I thought stepping independant. [Did 6920 ship with 9600M GS, which will have same four clock steps.]

This 9600M GT VBIOS is version: 62.94.38.00.04 which is available online
    http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/32236/Acer.9600MGT.512.080619.html
There is only one VBIOS version which is higher (at TechPowerUp), and is stated for Acer Aspire 7730G.

I can move the 9600M GT to an 8920 and flash your modded SBIOS there. If it steps up the clock settings there, then we'll know the card is OK. I read the SBIOS for the 8920 was not fixed though, from Mookill. Any more info at this point would be good though. I'll try that soon, most likely. I was going to leave the 9600M GT in the 5920, and seek another 9600 for the 8920, rather than be swapping lots.

Do you confirm a 9600M GT working in a 5920G?

@mookill: So, you are seeing the BIOS POST screen on the external display, but not the internal one? I'm pretty sure you flashed the wrong BIOS version then.

Do you have a "Workaround control" menu in your BIOS setup?

@u6b36ef: That's good news - the MXM structure mod helped. However, not going beyond perf. level 2 is a sign that something is still amiss with the structure - perhaps the thermal records are wrong.
Do you get an MXM structure warning during POST?

Also, just to be sure that it is not a driver or throttling/overheat problem, try using PowerMizer Manager to lock a higher performance level. If it works -> driver or thermal issue; otherwise it's the MXM structure.

P.S. Try downloading 62.94.38.00.04 from TechPowerUp, and binary-compare it with the BIOS you have in your card. I suspect yours is patched to avoid 30-second beeping on startup - however, this masks any remaining issues with the MXM structure.

@TehSuigi: Time to remove the "NOT compatible" note I guess.

@u6b36ef - I've read about this exact issue in the C90 topic. Check Step 5, I hope it helps :)

    @ .NetRolller 3D,

100% clean boot: no MXM structure 30 second message while booting.
Temperature wise I have not managed to push it above 55'C yet, including benchmarking. Not temperature or power throttling then. It idles cool.
It would go to high clocks normally on opening 3D Mark, to test, but as it's throttling for an unknown reason, clocks stay low.

Yeah, I've tried two powermiser gadgets.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...izer-switch-get-most-out-your-video-card.html
PowerMizer Manager | Some More Bytes
Though I can't be certain they worked. (The first suggested 'running as admin', yet couldn't find that option. The files ran from .rar file, and doesn't install)

I have the two vBIOS copies open to look at. I have seen one discrepancy; a blue 'n' character, in the third line; that's in the card copy. The third line says db 7Fh ; n. Wierdly it dissappears intermittantly too. That n is missing in the TechPowerUp version. It hints that you are onto something though. Sadly there, there are 1300 pages of code in IDA and hex. It would take days to compare the whole files.

    @ Tirturbo,

Thanks, that looks like it. The mods are scary, and designed to leave the card with only two performance levels. Argh - shame, they may only be safe on an Asus too, I'll have to read again and more, to be sure. I'll read the rest of the 137 pages to see if anyone has a fuller fix, or a less risky fix. I'll need to open up the back of the 5920 now to see what the memory chip placements are like. (I.E. If they are Samsung and vertically placed or horizontal like Nightstalker said you need to check.) While I'm there I may as well test the 9600 in the 8920.

I hope there is an even simpler fix than page one of the Nightstalker thread, in there. However I have been googling and nothing's shown up so far. Maybe .NetRolller 3D might be able to make sense of it (the VBIOS) now we suspect exactly what the cause is.

@ Mookill, Did your last post mean that you get normal BIOS screen with external monitor. (As you said before no BIOS screen with the laptop LCD "8920".) Usual 8920 9600m GT result seems like what you said before - no repair.

@u6b36ef: Try flashing the TechPowerUp version for a test. I suspect the 7F byte is really a hack to bypass 30-second beeps on startup, probably added by the card's previous owner - but when working with the MXM structure, it only makes our job harder.

Also, please post your version of the BIOS.

    BIG UPDATE!

The BIOSes in the first post (all 3 of them + a new one, for 4720G) have been updated today:
-A BIOS for 4720G has been added. The fix was straightforward, as the problem was exactly the same as with the 5920G.
-5920G has received a small update, fixing minor nits in the HDMI and TV-Out fields. (The 4720G BIOS also contains these fixes).
-The HDMI display descriptor of the 6920G and 8920G was altered to re-enable audio-over-HDMI. (I probably disabled this one accidentally when doing the original mods; or maybe it was disabled from the factory, with the stock cards of these machines never checking the audio setting and unconditionally using SPDIF audio, even when it is disabled in the MXM structure.)
-The display order of the 6920G/8920G was altered to internal-first. This should help mookill's issues.
-All 4 BIOSes have had their MXM structure version bumped to v2.1 (previously, they were v2.0). This may help u6b36ef's throttling problem.

    Enjoy, and flash responsibly! :)

    @ .NetRolller 3D,

    8920 with the 9600M GT
I tried the 9600M GT in the 8920, and it runs from the start. I can see the BIOS screen with your 8920 SBIOS, that I downloaded about a week ago, (the first version). " 8920 is OK with 9600M GT " .
(I don't know what has happened for Mookill.)

    Ref: 5920
I will most likely try your 'new' 5920 SBIOS with the 9600M GT soon. I'd like to see the 5920 going 100% with the 9600M GT.

Ref the 9600M GT VBIOS. I have thought of flashing the VBIOS to the TechPowerUp one (same version), just in case. I don't know how to add files (or pictures) here, sorry; I don't know how to post the 9600M GTs' original current VBIOS. I'll try to get it to you.

EDIT: @ .NetRolller 3D, additional info;------- the 9600M GT ran in all four performance modes in the 8920. The card is functioning normally. Therefor we can draw conclusions about the 9600M GT's performance step clock fault in the 5920. Its either the 5920's SBIOS/9600M GT VBIOS combination, or the '7F byte' you refer to doesn't affect the 9600M GT in the 8920. -------------

P.S. I tried HDMI out from the 5920 once, and I think it didn't run audio, too. That might have been the cable though, since I bought it used at a market.

@ jhonst, Do you get where we are with the 5920 yet?
    ----------------

Top end temperatures in the 8920 with the 9600M GT are good now.
    80'C after 3D Mark '06 run twice.
    Crysis (demo) 82'C.
Idle temps are impressive dropping to about 42'C.
All standard voltages and clocks. Room temp 21'C.

    @ Mookill,

You must be reflashing the original Acer SBIOS back in. Easy mistake.
    1. Once you have downloaded the Acer 8920 BIOS file from the Acer support website, open it.
    2. Click the 'window' folder.
    3. With this 'window' folder open, copy in the modded .NetRoller 3D SBIOS file. (Just copy and paste it into the contents of this folder.)
    4. Clich the Winflash icon to start flashing. [Phoenix Winflash opens.]
    5. In the block where it says "Specify New BIOS File", click the 'Browse' button on the right hand side.
    6. Select the modified BIOS file, and then initiate the flash.

Also, make sure that you have "Advanced=1" in Phlash.ini. Otherwise, it will automatically use the original BIOS.

Surely make sure the 'Back up BIOS and flash BIOS with New Settings', is checked, is easier. (Mookill that's nearer at the top of the BIOS flash window.)
Thanks for mentioning it. I'd not looked inside the advanced tab before; I barely noticed it.

Anyway this is the 9600M GT's original VBIOS, (with that disappearing/ appearing 'n' character, in the third line.)
    G96 M Original Card Copy.bin

Did you notice the added message from two posts ago, for you.
EDIT: @ .NetRolller 3D, additional info;------- the 9600M GT ran in all four performance modes in the 8920, etc....

Anyway the 9600 is back in the 5920 now. I can test the TechPowerUp VBIOS version, and your new SBIOS.
Did you read the link Triturbo last added. That describes how an Asus user got round the problem. You only need read the 'Part 5' section; the rest is mainly hardware mods. There is also a warning about card versions which the author thinks are OK to try with. I'm not suggesting this modification as an option, I just wondered if you saw it, and had any thoughts

    Hi everyone! :)
    I have a question
If I flash this modded BIOS in my 5920G with a new ATi HD4670 MXM 2.1 (not 9600M GT) will my computer work anyway?
I want only update the MXM Structure to v2.1 because the card I have is MXM 2.1 (as reported on the sticker of the card)
Also, I have problems with the fan since I have installed the new "monster" :D
I think this BIOS will fix this problem and others...
I have attached my HD4670 VBIOS so if anyone want to verify that the BIOS will not give me a black screen due to incorrect MXM interrupt or for other things

Anyway, very good thread! Congratulations ;)

    "Warning":
I have flashed the new V2 SBIOS version to the 5920. The laptop will now not start, and there is power. Maybe the flash went wrong though it did complete, but now I have to do a CRISIS flash.

The first version of the modded SBIOS was OK.

5920G BIOS on the main page reverted to previous version.

@u6b36ef: Can you check if the BIOS completely broke your system, or just 9600M GT support?

It's the whole laptop. I have the 8600M GT in to be sure.

I have no floppy drive, and never did a 'crisis flash' before. Trying to find a UBS or DVD recovery. There are reports on internet it works.

I'm hoping the BIOS is recoverable because I am reading things like in many cases it is not. I.E. your laptop board is finished. (I think this is going to be a long night.)

Here are a few resources, that may help you:
WinCris (the Windows crisis disk creator utility) can be found @ crisdisk.rar.
Run WinCris.exe in "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" compatibility mode on Windows 7.
Use my first (working) MXM-fixed BIOS, or the original Acer BIOS, renamed to BIOS.WPH.
Use a sufficiently small USB drive (<1GB, preferably).

If all else fails; you can get a replacement BIOS chip on eBay, pre-programmed with v1.3813 unmodified. (Soldering iron not included.) The BIOS chip is located on the motherboard as seen on this picture: http://members.home.nl/mr-lee/Aspire 5920G.jpg.

EDIT: Pulled all other new BIOSes too (except for the 5720G one, which I personally tested), until further notice. The ones linked in the fir<!-- a -->st post shall be safe to use.
(For the adventurous, the new versions are still available in the iFile.it folder linked in the fir<!-- a -->st post. Consider them beta quality for now.)

I think I saw this, and doesn't it only work in Win 7. However I am using Vista. I have Wincris, from about a week ago. I found stuff while I was first considering doing the flash.
I have a 256mb and a 64mb flash drive to play with. I have the HP app tp make USB drive bootable too, if needed. Stuck at this point for now.
This might work, http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...oenix-bios-crisis-recovery-no-floppy-yes.html but the link Darth nVader points to is inactive and says contact Notebookreview admin.

The link I posted is actually the file missing from the "no floppies" topic (v1.0.0.4).

No need for the HP tool, Wincris will already make the USB drive bootable.

I think the link for "crisdisc.rar" you posted is the one you need Win 7 (XP mode) for. I read that 1.0.0.4 needs it on another internet page. However, the author of the "no floppies" page doesn't mention needing Win 7.
I have tried it though, and it reports there is no removable media attached to the computer.
Wincris in general reports that there is no floppy drive available. I have tried that many times, and days ago.
I tried lots of others that say they work with usb. This was one.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-your-phoenix-bios-bios-recovery-methods.html

I think today I'll have to buy an external floppy. I'm giving up in the next few minutes to make sure I get to a shop. I hope they have an external floppy drive and a disc in stock. Otherwise eBay. I'd rather buy a new drive from a reputable high street, because I had some bad luck with eBay recently.
