    Hi!
Anyone know how to force windows to instal the nvidia drivers on ati graphics? My TrMa 5530g with gf 9600m gt login into windows but with black screen. I tried plugin laptop to the monitor and tv by hdmi. I read the other threads and they use hdmi to instal the drivers. Mayby when i somehow instal the drivers it will works.

That wouldn't work trying to force it to install Nvidia drivers written for Nvidia cards on ATI ones... You can always try installing the Nvidia drivers in safe mode via f8 on start-up.

Is your 5650 fitted with DDR2 or DDR3 hexxor93? I did not know it supported DDR2.

    Gpu-z says its ddr2 but from what I've seen it only in ddr3 or gddr3. Check it out;

Just checked around online, my bad its just a gpu-z reading error...

Ok, I uinstalled ati drivers, then clean windows in secure mode with Driver Cleaner and install card as standard VGA card. Then i tried to blind instal 197.16 and 194.15 driver but they didn't detected GF 9600 card. I think it wont work with TravelMate 5530g. I also have a question. I have got a FireGl V5725 card from HP EliteBook 8530w. But when put it into laptop there is black screen and 1 long 2 short peeps. I have got vBIOS for hd 3650 with 256mb ddr3, would it help to blind flash this card?

    Hi.

Did you try installing latest driver for Nvidia since I saw you tried installing version 197 which is way old, and the latest is 260.99. I am using it and I have no problems with...

Download the ini file from laptopvideo2go for the version of driver you want to install

ie. 260.99 driver with 260.99 ini file

unzip drivers then place ini file in folder and overwrite.

drivers should find your card then

Those are actually the GPU cores themselves, ready to be embedded into a motherboard or MXM card. Of course, they're practically useless on their own and unsoldered, let alone without vRAM.

    Meaker,

Thanks for the link. Hmm, it looks like the die is rotated on the 4650 from the image on the website?

I wonder if this means I can't stick it in the 7720G to replace the 2400XT.

Might be stuck with getting the HD3650 I guess. Back to doing more research and try and figure this out.

    Darn it.

I found a 9600m GT MXM II on ebay. The listing says it has DDR3 and that they ship worldwide.

    You're very welcome.

CAD$253.70 for the 4650 or CAD$146.29 for the 9600M GT. Just so you know.

I'm not trying to advertise but I will ship some of my 9600m GT ddr3 worldwide, I have 21 of them.

Actually I wanted to ask you all, is there any reason the 14" MXM models will not support the 9600m GT? I have no experience with acer.

My VGA laptop should be MXM-A.

No it does not work in switchable mode, only dedicated unless you dont mind runnning in IDE mode. See my upgrade report on MXM-upgrade.com

    NpTr it's not.

i've read it time ago, that's why I'm asking it here :(

I think that 4670 should be the right choice.. or not? are there other MXM-A cards that can be at the same level / higher level than 250M?

I would say that the 4670 would be your best bet. There is a 5650 in MXM-A format, but I've only seen one so far and it belongs to Meaker now. I've got a 4650 DDR2 that I'll be willing to part with soon, but it's performance will be much lower than the 250m or 4670.

If you have a mechanical HDD (because running a SSD in IDE mode is stupid) you could try the GTS250M, it will work in just dedicated mode normally in AHCI but will blue screen in switchable (even on a fresh OS as it installs).

The HD4670 is even listed in the FRU and works flawlessly.

    Hi there,

I'm looking for an Acer maschine for my younger brother, which has a MXM 3.0 AND an Core i5/i7. Does someone know which of the newer models have an MXM?

Edit: It shouldn't be bigger than 15,6"

And even then, it's speccy: although the 5940G does list the MXM in its disassembly/reassembly instructions and jumper/connector location diagram, it's not mentioned in the system block diagram, and no cards show in the FRU list.
Then again, the 5940G has only one mainboard part in its FRU list, so...

You might be better served by an MSI or Clevo notebook; Acer's stopped their MXM support as of late.

i bought a 3650 mxm ii to replace the dead 8600m gt of my 5920g. it works but after a few seconds/minutes the display goes blank. if i reset the display will work again but will disappear after a few moments. i also tried the card on a 4520g but the same problem occurs.

did i bought a defective card or maybe i did something wrong?

with MXM 2.1 the MSIs were amazingly compatible, most didnt have an HE slot but HE cards will work anyway.
I am guessing they still have quite a bit of BIOS support for all types of cards.

Try the gx640 or ms-1656, they both have MXM 3.0

Sorry for the question, but have you put a new thermal paste in there? If so are you sure that you have applied it correctly? It sounds like overheating to me, but it could be a faulty one, though it would be the first I know. If you are using thermal pad it definitely overheats.

OCZ Vertex II SSD is coming, so my HD will run in AHCI mode :(

What drivers have you used? are you sure that problems became from disc mode and not fromm drivers??

maybe original drivers from Acer support (leatest are 187.45 for GT 240M) will work good, instead of updated -but modded- drivers

In place windows 7 install (SSD) (cleared of driver beforehand) - Blue screen

Clean install (Mech HDD) - Bluescreen DURING installation

The disk worked fine during installation for other GFX cards or in dedicated mode.

there's a thermal pad (bluish square rubber-like thing) on the gpu heatsink and i didnt remove it. i will try to remove it and replace it with thermal paste and see if it works now.

    thanks for the suggestion :)

You would need to do a copper mod as well, as the space between the GPU core and the heatsink is pretty notable. Or you can apply a large amount of MX-3 or ICD7 thermal paste in order to fill the gap (that's just in case you don't have copper shim around and it's only temporary solution, you shouldn't game like that). For the copper mod you'll need 16x16x0.9mm copper shim, aluminum would do the trick as well, but copper is better.

yes, the gap is very big. i tried applying large amount of paste just to fill the gap. the problem still exists but the display lasts long enough to see the windows startup.

ill try the copper/aluminum mod. i hope my card is still okay.

So anyway, I thought I'd update on my mxm 2 upgrade adventures for my tm7720-6486.

I also picked up a hd4650 from ipc.de, as per earlier in this thread. But, haven't been able to swap it in as of it. I need to find myself some threaded nuts into which to screw the retaining clip that keeps the heatspreader in contact. I also messed up one of the screws - wore down the screwhead when I was tightening the stock card back down. So I'm also going to have to deal with that next time I open her up.

Apart from that, it appears the stock heat spreader is fine for the 4650 board. Once I figure out the threaded nuts I'll update with whether it works, i.e. whether it is BIOS compatible and whatnot.

Suggestions from all on where to find thin threaded nuts are welcome.

Once everything is confirmed working, I intend to go back in and stick in copper shims. I'll take some pictures to set up a how-to guide then.

@hasanabi: Just because it's not in the list doesn't mean it's not doable. MXM upgrades aren't meant to be done by end users, so there's no hard list for what will and won't work. Any upgrades listed are from NBR users' own attempts and successes. That being said, I've never heard of an 8600M GS causing problems.

@Grzenio: Awesome! Post some screenshots, and we'll toss that into the main post.

    @acerbhattac: Keep us posted!

Wya, as far as I know, no one's tried. Any MXM-II card should theoretically work, with the GeForce 9600M GT being the most compatible (since other 8730Gs have been sold with that card standard).

Make sure it has dedicated graphics, I think there was an 8730 non G. If it's intel graphics only its probably not got the slot in it.
